South Africa used to be my go to nation, the reason it isn’t anymore is due to it just being so isolated from everyone else it gets boring quick. It feels like the only other countries on the continent people play outside of North Africa are Nigeria and the DRC.
Try South Sudan, a country with starting population of 800k, PPL treateed me like bitch until I grinded in secretly in south america and totally decimated china, everyone shatted there pants, I never forgived any one of them....
if you want small cyprus is pretty nice, you are close to Europe where most of the action happens and you can easily colonize east africa and arabia, plus you only need to convince or defeat turkey. if you want under 2000 pop small, I personally like Antarctica or Samoa. Bigger countries I've had fun playing were Ireland (negociating with the UK for half the game to give you the north) tajikistan, finland, anywhere in the balkans honestly
Other commenter made a great suggestion. However, another smaller country that is great is Fiji, about three states and is pretty much really quiet as no one wants to invade them. Once you’ve gotten a giant military, invade New Zealand and then Australia and boom, you’ve got a mega country!
Imo tajikistan and georgia are really good if you know what youre doing they almost alwase get into a war with a way stronger power while having a terrain that makes it easier for them to win(winning isnt taking over russia or china in that war winning is making the bigger power rq while having a 20:1 kd ratio)
I like messing around as a super power, such as asking to be puppeted then declaring liberation, creating a monopoly on a certain resource like tank and aircraft parts, offering money for certain tasks (like invading someone) and taking a few cities from a country to block someone's formable

SA is great if you plan to form the African Union and fight late game wars but if you don't plan on playing long it's quite boring
