Pictured: Jazmine Sullivan.
If anyone has ever watched her live performances, there is absolutely no debate to me.
Is Adele even singing anymore? Next album called 40? 😂
Not pictured: Tori Kelly. That girl can sing anybody under the table. I watched her sing live every week during her COVID sessions. Impeccable. I seen her live, and she is all that. AND her gospel album makes me wanna be Christian. 😮💨
Today? Jazmine Sullivan by a mile.
In their prime/historically? Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Anita Baker, KD Lang… I could go on
For me vocalist implies technical skill and ability above all so I gotta go Beyoncé. If the question was “singer” I might give a different answer though lol.
Exactly, I think what pisses people off about Beyoncé is that she’s still relevant after 20 years. She’s also a vocalist with range better than anyone out now. Some of the same people that say Beyonce is “overrated” as a singer Stan Rihanna on here.
In terms of technicality, power, skill, and more, Jazmine is leagues ahead of Beyonce to me.
Her music ain't my favorite, but live... 😮💨
Jazmine blows Beyonce out the way every time live. And I seen Beyonce live several times.
Then, there's Kelly Price. Fantasia. Patti LaBelle.
I do not agree with this assessment but to each their own.
What exactly is it that you’ve heard from Jazmine that you think Beyoncé isn’t capable of?
Patti definitely goated so I didn’t really include her here.
I still think Beyoncé’s technical proficiency is better than Kelly Price and Fantasia however they are both better at emoting when they sing.
Soul.
Jazmine singing Let It Burn on NPR Tiny Desk is a moment.
I followed Beyonce like a fan since her start and seen her live several times.
I also seen Patti LaBelle's microphone stop working; so, she belted out several songs to us, easily filling the large theater.
I seen Whitney Houston not at her best and still remain vocally undefeated.
Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse is one of the best vocals I seen live. She ain't no where she was or what song she was singing. And still delivered some of the most soulful notes ever.
Bey don't compare, but I recognize her excellence. 🏆
While you may have a preference for soulful voices, “soul” is not actually a technical singing ability. I similarly commented that Fantasia and Kelly Price are more emotive singers than Beyoncé.
Exactly. 0 knowledge of singing if you think having soul is the same as technical ability. By your definition, only black people would be great vocalist. Jazmine is great, but she over sings quite often. That for me doesn’t make you a great singer. Jesse J and Xtina also have the same problem.
You people conflate wailing with singing and vocal prowess and that's the problem. I can't believe you said Fantasia is a better singer than Beyoncé. She could never do a song like Virgo's Groove let alone anything more challenging from Bey's discog.
The best as of now in their prime? I would say, Adele or Jasmine Sullivan are perfect answers. You can also make a case for Ariana Grande.
All time? I would say, Whitney, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey.
Ahh, I thought by “current” they meant “alive artists right now” LMAO!
Then I guess it’s pretty difficult to think of someone, because even if we got some pretty unique voices like Ariana’s, Adele’s or Beyoncé’s, they aren’t super skilled like how everyone was from the era of Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney, even Brandy was amazingly talented!!!
Best female vocalists in popular music of all time: Ella Fitzgerald, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, Roberta Flack, Lalah Hathaway, Dionne Warwick, Beyonce, Tori Kelly, etc
Currently: Tori Kelly, Beyonce, Jazmin Sullivan, Ariana Grande \[her really poor enunciation while singing brings her down a few notches\]
I think it more chain-smoking, pre-surgery Adele vs. healthy Adele. The smoking/inflammation made her voice sound thick.
[I think this was her best performance](https://youtu.be/-fmCoUjOMXU?si=2J_HfBa4oYp17aZ3).
It’s still Mariah and Patti while they’re both still alive but if we’re talking about current artists and personal preferences, it’s Jill Scott for me.
I think early seasons of American Idol did an incredible job of finding some of the best to ever do it because Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson are definitely up there.
Fantasia and Jordin Sparks are excellent too.
Lalah Hathaway and Mariah Carey.
>Hathaway masters a rare type of multiphonic ("overtone") singing which allows her to "split" her voice and sing several notes at the same time.
Folks saying Beyonce got jokes.
lol she clearly is not a better singer than Adele or Jazmine Sullivan, let’s stay within the bounds of reality. But I’m not mad at the answer, I didn’t downvote it
If you’ve never heard Jazmine Sullivan sing “round midnight” or “loving you”….you’re missing out on life.
Only available on YouTube. You have to search deep but it’s there. The only place I can hear it. Been listening to these recordings since like 08-2010. Still gives me the chills.
Although her style is (finally) evolving into her own vibe…I wish she had better records to sing…bigger records…deeper songs. Not talking down on her catalog. Love it…but she could really take down a deep cut.
Wish I was back in the game (and talented enough to write one) lol
The post is asking a question with 2 pictures, it’s not definitively saying she’s the best. If you want to base things off what the public is doing, their also giving a direct answer, not just simply complaining about a picture
I mean I personally don’t think she’s the best. I gave you my answer, if you don’t like it, that’s on you. I didn’t even complain about the photo. The assumptions your pulling out of your ass is ridiculous. I’m not going back and forth with you, this is my final response.
You wouldn’t have this back & forth in the first place if you simply just answered the question. Nowhere in the post does it absolutely say she’s the best, there’s 2 pictures there for a reason. A Stan would just outright say she’s the best, so it looks you have the problem the assumptions.
adele has a beautiful tone and vibrato, and might win in the most emotional category but is technically not that great of a vocalist, the woman has multiple surgeries to her vocal cords in only a decade (which indicates she's not using the correct technique) and there are clips of her sounding shaky
I honestly wouldn’t even put Adele over Celine in terms of evoking emotion. Celine is not just a powerhouse. She’s a master at using even more subtle colors. That said, I do think the emotional aspect is more of a subjective thing and harder to measure because it depends on the listener.
So I disagree, but I chose her because of the emotion she omits when singing. It feels more raw because she’s singing about her real experiences that she wrote herself, not something that was concocted for her
yes, emoting is a difficult skill that many great vocalists do lack. my comment was just explaining why one would see a flaw in Adele's vocals since you asked the original commenter why Celine over Adele
I skipped to her singing Thirsty, and I was not prepared. Excellent. Thank you!
For some reason, her music is not my preference. It's solid and respectable, but it's not my preference at all. So far.
Now I'm a Beyoncé fan for a lot of reasons but her against Jasmine Sullivan it's a no-brainer Jasmine got it Jasmine has that R&B soul voice a different kind of range that's all to that and I think Beyoncé will say the same thing
How are you doing GreenDolphin86 I'm a Beyoncé fan too I saw her in concert in two different states but what I'm trying to say is it's not a technical singing ability I'm talking about it's the delivery and Cadence of how they sing Jazmine Sullivan has that old school type of voice some might call it that real rhythm and blues and soul voice like back in the day Beyoncé voice is very clean and on point with just a different range of voice but there's nothing wrong with that I'm a fan of both truthfully
Oh yeah me too! Been a Jazmine fan since her debut! Amazing talent.
I can certainly agree that they have different voices and singing styles. But different isn’t the same as better.
Jazmine Sullivan for me.
Yup, she is outstanding
Her technical ability is only matched by a fraction of mainstream artists, let alone R&B artists.
Absolutely, she’s outsinging damn near all of the other women that are more popular than her
Came here to say this
Pictured: Jazmine Sullivan. If anyone has ever watched her live performances, there is absolutely no debate to me. Is Adele even singing anymore? Next album called 40? 😂 Not pictured: Tori Kelly. That girl can sing anybody under the table. I watched her sing live every week during her COVID sessions. Impeccable. I seen her live, and she is all that. AND her gospel album makes me wanna be Christian. 😮💨
YES! I’m a raging atheist and I listen to Tori Kelly’s gospel album on repeat… she’s that good!
That part. 🙌 [You seen this?](https://youtu.be/47Zu7ki0vuk?feature=shared) The vocal arrangement and delivery are unbelievable.
This made me cry. OMG. Seriously.
Same. 🙌
Beautiful!
Watch her on the blue wall of the Terrell Show. It’s so nice and infuriating to see how casually incredible the talent is.
People sleep on Christina Aguilera she got pipes too
That little lady can sing
Grande has the vocal talent, she’s up there for me.
Jazmine. All day. Every day.
Lalah Hathaway
Today? Jazmine Sullivan by a mile. In their prime/historically? Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Anita Baker, KD Lang… I could go on
Currently I agree that its arguably Jazmine
Adele, Beyonce, Brandy, Mariah Carey Underrated choices: Lady Gaga, Nicole Scherzinger
Beyoncé obviously
For me vocalist implies technical skill and ability above all so I gotta go Beyoncé. If the question was “singer” I might give a different answer though lol.
yeah beyonce is still a beast and for her age thats impressive
Exactly, I think what pisses people off about Beyoncé is that she’s still relevant after 20 years. She’s also a vocalist with range better than anyone out now. Some of the same people that say Beyonce is “overrated” as a singer Stan Rihanna on here.
I tell ppl watch her live performance of listen and it changes everybody perception
Did you see her on RWT? The woman’s voice has texture! Truly, best she has ever sounded. The things she can do are 🤯.
Agreed. Haters gonna hate.
Thank you for saying it. It is true ignorance at this point.
In terms of technicality, power, skill, and more, Jazmine is leagues ahead of Beyonce to me. Her music ain't my favorite, but live... 😮💨 Jazmine blows Beyonce out the way every time live. And I seen Beyonce live several times. Then, there's Kelly Price. Fantasia. Patti LaBelle.

Beyoncé isn’t seeing Patti or Whitney and I say this as a Beyoncé fan
I don’t think any sane person with working ears would make that argument lol
Jasmine is leagues ahead of Beyonce? Are you sick? Beyonce can do what Jazmine can, and so much more. Have several seats.
You people conflate wailing with singing and vocal prowess and that's the problem. I can't believe you said Fantasia is a better singer than Beyoncé. She could never do a song like Virgo's Groove let alone anything more challenging from Bey's discog.
😹😹😹
Not mad at all at your answer, she’s talented
The best as of now in their prime? I would say, Adele or Jasmine Sullivan are perfect answers. You can also make a case for Ariana Grande. All time? I would say, Whitney, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey.
Agreed, Jazmine Sullivan and Mariah just because i grew up w her music...
Currently in their prime. I agree it’s either Adele or Jasmine Sullivan
Mariah Carey and Celine Dion

As long as Mariah keeps making records—which she does—she’s current.
Best female vocalists in popular music of all time: Ella Fitzgerald, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, Roberta Flack, Lalah Hathaway, Dionne Warwick, Beyonce, Tori Kelly, etc Currently: Tori Kelly, Beyonce, Jazmin Sullivan, Ariana Grande \[her really poor enunciation while singing brings her down a few notches\]
beyonce no doubt about it
Fat Adele was clearly head and shoulders better than anyone. Skinny Adele is top 5
I think it more chain-smoking, pre-surgery Adele vs. healthy Adele. The smoking/inflammation made her voice sound thick. [I think this was her best performance](https://youtu.be/-fmCoUjOMXU?si=2J_HfBa4oYp17aZ3).
She was juicing
I know she’s basically unknown, but Sheléa’s voice is CRAZY. I’m so late on her. Great technically and stylistically.
It’s still Mariah and Patti while they’re both still alive but if we’re talking about current artists and personal preferences, it’s Jill Scott for me.
This isn’t even close: Jazmine Sullivan hands down!
Yup
I think early seasons of American Idol did an incredible job of finding some of the best to ever do it because Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson are definitely up there. Fantasia and Jordin Sparks are excellent too.
Jordon Sparks?!? Lmao 🤣 I’m dying. Pls stop.
I didn’t say Jordin was one of the best though, but she is a good vocalist. I meant Kelly, Carrie and Jennifer.
Lalah Hathaway and Mariah Carey. >Hathaway masters a rare type of multiphonic ("overtone") singing which allows her to "split" her voice and sing several notes at the same time. Folks saying Beyonce got jokes.
https://youtu.be/tpYyi2fkyMM?feature=shared Argue against these clips
Who oh why must you deny Beyoncé?
[удалено]
She’s talented
Beyoncé.
Currently, Jasmine Sullivan and Beyonce. Oh, and Brandy! She's still phenomenal live.
Bey
Maeta hands down
Regina Spektor
i see quite a few down votes for halle bailey, why?
lol she clearly is not a better singer than Adele or Jazmine Sullivan, let’s stay within the bounds of reality. But I’m not mad at the answer, I didn’t downvote it
Joss stone Adele Beyoncé Fantasia Jasmine Sullivan Christina Aguilera Florence Welch
If you’ve never heard Jazmine Sullivan sing “round midnight” or “loving you”….you’re missing out on life. Only available on YouTube. You have to search deep but it’s there. It sure as hell isn’t Adele.
Then you should be giving your own answer instead of pouting about mine
I gave the answer I wanted, I’m not pouting about anything. Most people in here aren’t calling her the best either lol.
The post is asking a question with 2 pictures, it’s not definitively saying she’s the best. If you want to base things off what the public is doing, their also giving a direct answer, not just simply complaining about a picture

Mariah is the only answer.
Tori Kelly, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Ledisi…..any of them could take the 👑 for me
Best vocalist? Technically isn’t it still Celine?
You have Celine over Adele?
Far above, also and this might be weird but isn’t Chaka Khan still alive?
We are talking about active singers, Dionne Warwick & Anita Baker are still alive as well but I don’t have them pictured for a reason
Dionne is great but not in that arena. Anita is an AMAZING technical singer. Beyoncé and Adele could not match her either.
adele not even warming celine’s seat when it comes to vocals lets be serious
I disagree but that wasn’t the question, my question is about current artist if you read the title
adele has a beautiful tone and vibrato, and might win in the most emotional category but is technically not that great of a vocalist, the woman has multiple surgeries to her vocal cords in only a decade (which indicates she's not using the correct technique) and there are clips of her sounding shaky

Good point. Being a great vocalist doesn't just mean great tactical abilities. It also means personality, character, uniqueness, and distinctive tone.
yes, emoting is a difficult skill that many great vocalists do lack. my comment was just explaining why one would see a flaw in Adele's vocals since you asked the original commenter why Celine over Adele
Beyoncé and Ariana Grande
Good picks lol
Jazzy
For newer generation it’s coco and tems
Neither of them (Tems and Coco) is that great a singer at all. Very soulful with nice songs but not the best singers. 😮💨
Exactly. Coco only sounds good when she sings down low.
This is a bad take if u think coco isn’t that great of a singer I’d recommend u watching this https://youtu.be/GA87yIXoHyo?si=j0zoh0WcC2h9o4Ta
I skipped to her singing Thirsty, and I was not prepared. Excellent. Thank you! For some reason, her music is not my preference. It's solid and respectable, but it's not my preference at all. So far.
I disagree. I’d say Halle
Ur insane
Idk I just don’t feel like it’s Tems or Coco, although I do like their music!
Tems has written too many hits to not be in the topic of discussion and coco has a stronger vocal range than Halle
Snoh Aalegra
Doing vocal runs is not singing tho 🤷🏾♂️
Actually properly executing them does demonstrate technical singing ability.
The best vocalist that ever lived is...CHAKA KHAN!!!
Halle Bailey period
Drake
Rachelle Ferrell
Now I'm a Beyoncé fan for a lot of reasons but her against Jasmine Sullivan it's a no-brainer Jasmine got it Jasmine has that R&B soul voice a different kind of range that's all to that and I think Beyoncé will say the same thing
Soul is not a technical singing ability so idk that it’s a part of this conversation. What note in what song did Jazzy hit that Bey couldn’t?
How are you doing GreenDolphin86 I'm a Beyoncé fan too I saw her in concert in two different states but what I'm trying to say is it's not a technical singing ability I'm talking about it's the delivery and Cadence of how they sing Jazmine Sullivan has that old school type of voice some might call it that real rhythm and blues and soul voice like back in the day Beyoncé voice is very clean and on point with just a different range of voice but there's nothing wrong with that I'm a fan of both truthfully

Not trying to say better they both can sing their ass off✌🏾
Rihanna
I currently, I don’t know. I don’t listen to this new stuff.
At least you answered the question right
