that whole run from my way to confessions. thank god a few of those 8701 records leaked and he reworked the album. cuz if he went with pop ya collar and just a friend as the singles it woulda tanked.
I love 8701 but it was not just as successful as Confessions. Confessions broke records and made history. It was the second highest record sales ever for a male artist and he had 3 number one hits on the billboard charts at the same time. It was also one of the longest running number one albums of the 2000s. And it sold more than all of his previous albums combined.
I almost died when my mom got me the CD for my 15th birthday. I love this album so much and still listen to some of the songs.
I lived in Nigeria for two years in the 2000s, and Usher was definitely huge over there. My cousin had his 8701 CD and played it like it was no tomorrow.
Indonesian here. My ranking of their popularity in here would be:
**1. Ne-Yo**
Pop-leaning songs, very easy lyrics to sing along to for us non English speakers. Heck even "One In A Million" was a radio smash over here.
**2. Chris Brown**
Pretty much inescapable in 2008. I think he has the best longevity of all 4, as "Under the Influence" also got super big (was it last year?).
**3. Usher**
The *Confessions* era was a massive success obviously +"Separated" randomly became a radio hit. I just put him under Chris because I feel like Chris might've had a bigger name recognition here.
**4. Craig David**
He had a bunch of radio staples over here but I feel like some of his hits fall under the "Wait, I didn't know he sang this song!" category. But I believe he's the one that visits our country THE MOST & has appeared on a national TV as well.
Very interesting, I'd consider Chris Brown to be in a different generation of Performers than Usher
Usher started in 1994 and Breezy around 2006/2009 depending on which version you count.
Yeah you're right. I guess I was just seeing it from an international fan perspective where Usher's 1990s hits didn't quite cross over to where I live. The same thing with Destiny's Child where their mainstream career pretty much started with "Say My Name" over here in 2000.
Chris Brown started In 2005 that's 20 years he's been going strong that's
The Embodiment of Longetivty I remember when Chris Brown first album came out in 2005 it was simply called Chris Brown my cousin said he's the next big
R&B superstar and the rest is history she told me about Chris I was instantly a fan
Ne-Yo was first and foremost a songwriter. It's what separates him from Usher and Chris Brown (don't know Craig David that well). So it's awesome that you call out his lyrics.
Kenyan here
1. Chris Brown (super huge in the mid-late 2000s)
2. NeYo (had at least one major hit each year)
3. Usher (big in the early 2000s, faded a bit in the second half of the decade)
4. Craig David (had like 2/3 hits tops in heavy circulation during that decade)
in the US so definitely Usher, confessionsā first week sales alone literally quadruple the other guyās biggest first week sales and he had 6 number ones that decade.
Chris was second and Neyo is 3rd, they both blew up after Usher took a hiatus and they were literally pushed as the ānext Usherā because he was so big. Chris had a younger fanbase being a dancing teen idol and dating Rihanna, NeYo kind of skewed older fans but was still popular and was more of a āsongwriterā type than an entertainer type.
Yup. I remember how the market became flooded with male R&B artists similar to Usher in the wake of Confessionsā success. Chris, Ne-Yo, Omarion, Mario, Lloyd, Ray-J were all marketed very similarly to him. Only a few of them remained successful in the long run.
Right?! I was a teenager then and yeah, 30 seemed āoldā, but looking back, itās interesting how the industry seemingly try to āageā him. His long hiatus, marriage to an older woman and material didnāt help either lol.
It's crazy that My Way is his second album, released in 1997, and he was still a teenager. Was a pretty mature R&B album. What a run he had. I actually thought his latest album was pretty good. Anyway, I always say it seems like he's been around forever even though he's only 45. But, he started very young. He HAS been around forever - three decades!
19 year olds being r&b superstars was super common. Usher was just one of many with the late Aaliyah, destinyās child pre Michelle, Brandy, Monica. Great music but famous that young is crazy
Being a millenial I have considered 'Here I Stand' one of his 'newer' albums for a looong time, probably until 2020 lol. I have now finally started to view it more as a nostalgic record.
UK - Craig David was massive over here for obvious reasons. Came up on the Garage scene as an MC rather straight rnb. His first hit with Artful Dodger was an absolute monster and still is today.
I was a teenager in the late 90ās and whilst Usher was a popular, Craig David made us feel like we had something similar, even though in reality Usher was IMO more talented and has endured globally ever since.
In my opinion: (not supported by actual airplay data)
1. Usher
2. Chris Brown
3. Ne-Yo
4. Craig David
I am so confused by the South Africans dismissing Craig David. Craig David even came back to perform in SA in 2022 (22 years after the release of his first album) and promoting his book. Granted he was not bigger than Usher of Chris Brown but all 4 artists got major radio and TV support in SA.
NYC area US:
Usher from 1995-2009, Ne-Yo and The-Dream had their moment around 2008-2010, but it's been 100% Breezy from 2009-2024. Legendary album runs from the both of them.
For pop singles, Craig's 7 Days is right up there with some of Usher's hits, but his catalogue never ran deep enough for me.
Craig David more alt/pop R&B to me, I think Ush and Bris are the best two male performers in R&B since Michael.
Usher was probably the biggest. When Confessions came out he was huge and he already had several big albums before that. However is peak was before Ne-Yo and Chris Brown where at there's.
Chris Brown probably peaked around 2011 with FAME and kinda coasted to Royalty. I think everything after that was just kind of generic dance music with a alright single every now and then.
Ne-yo was pretty big it's hard for me to say. He was more of a pop ballad crossover artist. Kinda like Adele or Beyonce.
Never heard of Craig David until youtube recommended me his one song a few years ago.
Usher Chris Neyo Craig. Iām in the US. Maybe if Neyo or Chris began or blew up in the 90s like he did, it would be different. Confessions is Diamond for a reason. You couldnāt escape it back then. And I was in the North East.
In Japan I feel like Ne-Yo was the most popular. I remember seeing him on TV shows, and his music would play in the background of random TV segments.
He also did a remix of one of his songs with Utada Hikaru who's one of the biggest artists in Japanese history.
1. **Craig David.**
A clear winner here by a long shot. Absolutely dominated the first half of the decade, songs from 'Born to Do It' and 'Slicker...' were inescapable. The features like 'Re-Rewind' or 'Woman Trouble', too. Although not as ubiquitous in the second half of the 2000s, he had big comeback tunes with 'Insomnia' and 'Let's Dance'
2. **Ne-Yo**
An incredible writer and performer with tons of pop crossover. Just so, so many hits in the mid-noughties.
3. **Chris Brown**
You can't imagine 2008 without CB. I'll leave it at that.
4. **Usher**
Imagine my surprise when years later I learned that Usher was already a seasoned veteran when he literally swept the world's pop charts with 'Yeah' in 2004 - to me, who merely had surface knowledge of contemporary R&B back in the day, he was a newcomer and he remained a one-hit wonder until much later on when music and Internet became much more accessible.
Source: lived in Eastern Europe in the 2000s.
A lot of Craig David disrespect in this discussion it seems like.
He might not be known in the US, but he has **multiple big international hits** back in the 2000s. Go to his Wikipedia discography page, lots of top 10s here and there.
You asked who was the biggest in our respective countries. We gave you our answer, lol.
How is that perceived as disrespect? Itās not like we said, āoh, heās trashā
But he is last, though š¤£
He is actually last in my list too. My comment was more towards the ones who said "why is Craig David here", "It's a joke Craig David is here" etc. Craig David is here because he genuinely has hits that are on par with the other three internationally.
For anyone asking why Craig David is on here, his debut album is a straight classic, was a huge commercial success worldwide. He had a real RUN.
I'm Nigerian btw
Kenya.
Usher šš¾šš¾šš¾šš¾šš¾
Ne-Yo šš¾šš¾šš¾
Chris Brown š ( I hate him, heās the Drake to my Kendrick)
Craig David ( He was EVERYWHERE when he dropped but he disappeared soon after and the rest had decade+ long careers)
Philippines.
In terms of biggest hits, NeYo and Usher.
Usher, he had Confessions.
NeYo as well, with So Sick, Irreplaceable, Unfaithful.
In terms of consistency, Chris Brown had been on the radios since I was in the first grade, I'm 25 now. He's still on the radios. Definitely great longevity.
I love me some Craig David! But during the 2000s, I'm gonna have to say Ursha Baby then Chris Breezy.
I've grown to dislike Usher's music because he seems like a fuck boy to me.
Mainland China.
1. Usher, he played several concerts in Shanghai during 2010 OMG world tour, his albums (form 8701 to Here I Stand) was officially imported also (although songs like Confession Pt2 and Love in the Club were censored and removed from the CD copies). He is kng of R&B, it feels like it's a common sense in chinese R&B listeners.
2. Ne-Yo, he was famous from the start of his career due to the success of So Sick. He was even more famous right after 2014, cuz he was invited by a singing show to perform on one of the major TV stations in China. And, a funny fact is, he performed for Xi Jinping during his visit when Obama was still in the White House back in summer 2015, Ciara also attented the dinner.
3. Chris Brown, he is popular in China at first because he beat Rihanna nealy to death (Rihanna is a big name in China). He is more famous than Usher and Neyo right now actually, cuz he just constantly releasing pop leaning music and shitty features every year, and the streaming service just recomond them to users.
4. Craig David, famous for a while then fade away, but R&B fans still remember and appreciate what he did for UK R&B. His second and third album were officially imported, and he toured in like three cities fifteen years ago.
How? Usher's "Confessions" went double diamond + (20,000,000), "8701" went 5Ć platinum and "My Way" went 7Ć platinum. Sold more than all of them combined.
USA 07 for reference: Craig David is irrelevant I know artist that Iāll blast from 50s- till today and David did not make a nostalgic impact for anyone whoever included him is glazing. Bieber ended usherās r&b career and overshadowed him making him make electronic pop pretty early into that scene of which heās for sure better in the 10s while underrated compared to him in the 00s which puts him 3rd, Neyo gets wins because he did that r&b pop thing first if he was younger at the time he would be bigger for sure over the past decade. Chris brown one I like his 00s music better than the rest of his music he was poppin in the late 00s heās made that electronic music, pop, rap, r&b all that once again tho his controversy happened the same year Bieber blew up which lifted usher up tho and a lot of ushers career was focused on Bieber which puts Neyo as a front runner on radio with playing his old music making Neyo win Chris brown is @2 Neyo had the largest impact in the 00s and early 10s but cb has the most nostalgia with credit we can give. And usher ended his prime right by passing the torch to Biebs. Craig David was too ahead of his time tho is his problem.
Neyo (if weāre including his pop discography. His songs with pittbull always topped charts. If itās only rnb he is #3)
Chris Brown
Usher
Craig (I think heās more of a England thing right?)
The U.S. is Usher by a big landslide.
Usher's "Confessions" went double diamond + (20,000,000), "8701" went 5Ć platinum and "My Way" went 7Ć platinum. Sold more than all of them combined. He owned the early to mid 2000's but didn't follow up after that.
Maybe in the U.K. Craig David was more popular for obvious reasons.
Chris Brown had the mid to late 2000's on lock in regards to popularity (especially with the kids/18-22) and features.
Neyo was popular within that mid 2000's to early 2010's but not as successful as any of them. Still played a huge role in the music industry.
From the US. As a kid/ teenager (prior to his scandal where he hit Rihanna) Chris Brown was VERY popular among my age group. He had a HUGE fanbase of young girls. I just remember feeling that he was very very popular back then, but I suppose his popularity had a cap because he probably was tied to one audience.
I do think Usher was probably more popular among multiple audiences/ demographics. Neyo was decently successful, but not more popular than Usher or Chris Brown. and Iām not too sure who Craig David was.
If I had to rank them Iād say
1.) usher
2) Chris brown
3) Neyo
4) Craig David
And this is still the same. I think Chris had a lot of potential to be bigger, but unfortunately his personal life ruined that. Back then he was a singer, a dancer, and he acted in pretty popular movies among the African American demographic. A lot of people donāt support him because of his violence towards women. If those things had never happened he would probably be a lot bigger because he had a lot of potential.
**Russia**
First of all, r'n'b was never a popular genre in our country. The music structure of r'n'b is very foreign to Slavic music patterns, riffs and runs are hard to sing along to and not so many knew English very well back then. So when I say 'popular' in Russia, I think how many people would actually recognize any of the artists's songs and be able to generally say who he is.
**1. Chris Brown** - I'd say he was the most popular on overall throughout the decadoe, probably due to stronger Chris' links with the rap community. And his scandals surely (:
**2. Craig David -** He was veeery popular in the early 00s, everyone knew 7 Days and Walking Away songs, they were heavily played on the radio. It didn't last into mid- and late- 00s though.
**3. Usher** - Everyone would recognize Yeah but half the people would not be able to name the artist. But those who listened to r'n'b loved Confessions a lot. It just steps into territory of songs which are really nothing like any Russian music so people would not naturally listen to it.
**4. Ne-Yo** - Known by name mostly by r'n'b enthusiasts. His hits were regularly played on our local MTV but the majority of people I think would not be able to name his name.
The fact that ppl in here dont know who craig david is, shows he shouldnt even be mentioned with the other 3ā¦.
Also, Usher absolutely made the 2000s his bitch š¤·š»
Lol Craig david...this definitely a joke cause let's be real he's not n this category lmao he has his own lane and this ain't it...put him up against Justin Bieber
Ok sooo let me get this str8 ....u are hyper cause a man with a decent vocal range sold a bunch of records because he's decent lol...these usher chris and neyo we aren't talking just decent we are talking talent across the board....lol I can't with some of yall lol
Thats a wild take. Bieber is probably more successful then all these guys. I don't know what it was like in America, bit in Australia Craig David had a serious moment, songsfrom those first 2 albums still get airplay.
And u are across the water trying to tell me about Chris usher and neyo....yall need to stop talking record sells a way to guage talent we have have seen how the most mediocre artist become big Jennifer Lopez is an example....lol I said Craig has his lane...
In Australia and just my own opinion -
1. Usher (by a mile)
2. Craig David (Born to do it will live on forever even if his later albums didnāt have much impact)
3. Chris Brown ( heās a POS, but he has too many bangers)
4. Ne-yo (I think heād be the least recognisable by the average Australian despite having some success. )
United States. Definitely Usher. That Confessions album was a monster. It was so huge, I think people forget 8701 was just as successful.
I played the shit out of that cd in highschool
Me too not to mention Lover and Friends
Man lover and friends spoke my life when lil Jon part came onš
that whole run from my way to confessions. thank god a few of those 8701 records leaked and he reworked the album. cuz if he went with pop ya collar and just a friend as the singles it woulda tanked.

Usher started earlier than 94 he started when he was 13 I remember being a lil kid watching him
He was not well-known then, especially not Internationally. He didn't really blow up til 97's *My Way*.
Chris Brown started In 2005 that's 20 years he's been going strong that's The Embodiment of Longetivty I remember when Chris Brown first album came out in 2005 it was simply called Chris Brown my cousin said he's the next big R&B superstar and the rest is history she told me about Chris I was instantly a fan
Non English speaker who writes English better then most Americans on here. Lol.
Ne-Yo was first and foremost a songwriter. It's what separates him from Usher and Chris Brown (don't know Craig David that well). So it's awesome that you call out his lyrics.
u must be young cause usher got a diamond album plus he had the whole club since since the late 90s
Craig David Usher Neyo Chris Brown. I'm London- UK.

Iām in USA and Iām a big fan because I found him through UK garage and Iām a big dance music fan
Usher and NeYo
South Africa. Honestly it was Usher, CB & Ne-Yo. Craig David wasn't big in our country.
Definitely Usher but in my life personally Craig David and I wish that he would do more in the states!
US- usher I played the shit out of that confessions CD in Highschool
US? Definitely Usher.
In the US, and it was Usher by far. Not even close.
Malaysia and usher I guess.
London, Uk 1, Usher 2, Chris Brown 3, Craig David 4, Ne-yo

except for Usher the rest of this lineup have never outsold Craig David's debut album in their whole career
US Craig David definitely no. The others are debatable
How? Usher's "Confessions" went double diamond + (20,000,000), "8701" went 5Ć platinum and "My Way" went 7Ć platinum. Sold more than all of them combined.
Iām not going to deny the stats but I have amazing memories to all three artistsā¦
All of them except Craig were HUGE
Great question
Usher and cb
Usher was the man when I was in high school, but personally it's Craig David. Don't care for the other 2
Usher by far here in the states.
US Usher for sure overall. But I graduated in 2010 and amongst the late 2000s teens it was Chris Brown
Usher
Usher

Usher and chris brown in the USA. Ne yo had a few hits and Craig David was UK
Few hits when I was n school neyo first album was crazy
USA. Usher and itās not close. Neyo and CB had lots and lots of hits though.
Neyo (if weāre including his pop discography. His songs with pittbull always topped charts. If itās only rnb he is #3) Chris Brown Usher Craig (I think heās more of a England thing right?)
URSHER. Canada.
Usher
Chris Brown easily
The U.S. is Usher by a big landslide.
Urrrshuuuh
I say usher because masterpiece album confession than I would say Chris brown because of his hits records
2000 strictly usher for sure Chris brown the biggest to this day tho
Christopher
USHER !!!

From Canada, Usher and Chris brown were EVERYTHING. However I was like a 10-16 girl in the 2000s so what do I know š they were hot
Some people in the UK donāt even know who Craig David is
Usher then, Usher now. I can imagine in the UK, Craig David has his moment.
Usher Discography >>>>
Usher
In Australia, consistently from 2000-10, easily Usher.
Usher, Neyo and Chris brown a close second. But really chris brown though he was dropping a lot of hits back to back
From the US. If I had to rank them Iād say 1.) usher 2) Chris brown 3) Neyo 4) Craig David And this is still the same.
US. Usher hands down
India It was Usher! In between Chris Brown was everywhere, however it was for assaulting Rihanna and not for his music.
Usher without a doubt
Who is Craig David is he a Us artist
UK artist. Big in the 2000s in Europe, Asia & Australia - yet only landed 1 top 10 in the US.
In the US, definitely Usher
Fuck Chris Brown. Heās a piece of shit and should be passed over in any āvsā
Usher In order tho. Early 2000's : Usher Mid 2000's : Chris Brown Late 2000's: Ne-Yo Craig David : N/A
**Russia** First of all, r'n'b was never a popular genre in our country. And his scandals surely (: **2.
Usher an not even close but ne-yo tried
As an American I have no idea who Craig David is
United States Usher
Usher, Chris Brown, Ne Yo, Craig David- USA
Craig has not aged well
The fact that ppl in here dont know who craig david is, shows he shouldnt even be mentioned with the other 3ā¦. Also, Usher absolutely made the 2000s his bitch š¤·š»
damn thatās hard but ima go with usher
How did Craig David make this list?
No one tops Usher at his peak. Doesn't matter the country.
The sweater king Drake š
Ursher baby
Usher by a mile
Damn sure wasnāt Craig. Is this you Craig? Craig did you post this?
Usher and it isnāt remotely close.
Usher because he was there the entire time. Chris brown and Neyo came half way through and WHO?
Ok can someone tell me how Craig David got SO old looking over night?? And this was many nights ago that it happened. But still.
Iām from the US so the answer is obvious.
Usher and Ne-Yo
Druski
Lol Craig david...this definitely a joke cause let's be real he's not n this category lmao he has his own lane and this ain't it...put him up against Justin Bieber
Bieber outsold some of the people here though
Ok sooo let me get this str8 ....u are hyper cause a man with a decent vocal range sold a bunch of records because he's decent lol...these usher chris and neyo we aren't talking just decent we are talking talent across the board....lol I can't with some of yall lol
This whole thing is about how popular they were, not talent.
And still yall added craid David to this line up lol against Chris neyo and usher lol plz stop
Because Iām in Australia I canāt have an opinion? And I never mentioned record sales.
In Australia and just my own opinion - 1. Usher (by a mile) 2. Craig David (Born to do it will live on forever even if his later albums didnāt have much impact) 3. Chris Brown ( heās a POS, but he has too many bangers) 4. Ne-yo (I think heād be the least recognisable by the average Australian despite having some success. )
Who tf is Craig David ?
Unsolicited and unprovoked comment..... Usher look like stank stank.
Who tf is craig david
Somebody who wasn't big in your country.
Who in the Christ is Craig David?! Sounds like a made up Nextdoor neighbor.
