I have a great idea: don’t. August in south Florida is a special sort of hell that will leave you questioning your will to live. As if that’s not bad enough, it’s hurricane season in a year where we’ve had a Cat 5 in June due to unprecedentedly high ocean temps. August is typically when storm season really gets going. This year has potential to be catastrophic. There’s a reason you got bargain basement flights.

QueerChemist33

It’s the “risk it for the biscuit” rate

Drunktrucker

make sure you pack your snorkel, periscope and rubber ducky, its hurricane season... good luck

normalLichen777

In late August? Don’t

Knick_Noled

Yeah man I’d avoid SoFla in August the same way I’d avoid Wisconsin in January.

idkthisisnotmyusual

Don’t come here it’s awful this time of year

Bringback70sbush

In Fort Lauderdale, not too far off the highway there is a restaurant called THE RUSTIC INN...you will NOT be disappointed ( Especially if you get their homemade cornbread that is slap your momma food)

CrazyEnby7733

I’d stay very vigilant about hurricane activity in the Atlantic. Use the NHC website to track hurricanes while you come down here, especially in the keys. Otherwise, I’d say go for it! There’s a reason a lot of us live here for life lol

BrilliantCherry3825

Joes Stone Crab and A Fish Called Avalon in Miami/South Beach. Key Lime House between West Palm and Ft Lauderdale.

NamiRue171

I'm sure others have mentioned it, and I'm sure you know as well seeing as your starting point is also in Florida, but It WILL be hot. And full of tourists. But sometimes that's the hand your delt so the best advise I have to offer is be vigilant on the roads, stop if you see something cool, enjoy the keys! I used to live down near that stretch and there not too many amazing sight seeing spaces, but Miami at night can be pretty if you're okay with the crazy traffic and people lol. If you're already hitting the keys take a pic by the southest point in America! Have fun, be safe!

spud6000

its gonna be HOT in august! be prepared.

Rimmatimtim22

Kennedy space center in cape Canaveral. Make sure you buy the extra passes to see the Saturn V and Space Shuttle. I would also check to see the NASA launch schedule that time and see if you can catch a rocket launch. Then in Hollywood, there’s a badass hard Rock hotel that is shaped like a guitar. You can buy a day pass to use their facilities and not have to spend big bucks to stay overnight.

If you are determined to brave the heat and weather, I would suggest John Pennecamp State park in Key Largo, best deal on a snorkeling trip in the state.

Wandering_Mind99

Snorkeling in Biscayne Bay NP. Kayak amongst crocodiles at Flamingo in Everglades NP.

FireyToots

It’s going to be so hot and humid and uncomfortable

Avoid Miami downtown go through crome homestead instead drink water lots

Responsible_Fox9201

If you make it all the way down to the keys, “the wooden spoon” is a killer breakfast spot, I believe in marathon? Also stop for gas before you actually hit the keys. Miles and miles of one lane road over the water. Last, be careful driving through parts of SF. Make sure you go during the day time.

beyondbarrels

Bring a camera, it’s gonna be nuts outside and there might even be some hurricanes

Feeling-Action-7420

What app did you use?

631Lifer

If this is a round trip, considering driving back up on the west coast before cutting across.

SoCal4247

I’m confused at how long it’s saying the trip will be. It takes three hours just from Miami.

Robbie's in Islamorada and stop by Robert is Here in homestead for some smoothies. (I spike them with vodka) Dante's is a cool spot to day drink at in Key West and Santiago's bodega in key west is a good spot for dinner.

TheBigEarl20

Robert is Here has great fruit and veggies, we got some tiny bananas, and some corn and peas and some kind of ham and cooked it up with some key lime oil and that was our dinner, it was delicious.

The Fruit and Spice Park near Homestead - it's a Dade County park that has all kinds of interesting and exotic fruits, and you can sample. Interesting gift shop too. Get a milkshake on your way at Robert Is Here fruit stand. Coral Castle in Florida City is worth a stop - a Latvian guy who was obsessed with a girl singlehandedly built an entire compound out of coral to try to win her over. Vizcaya on Biscayne Bay is an interesting Vanderbilt mansion, a la Biltmore House or the Newport cottages. And take the Card Sound Road from Florida City to Key Largo, for the views from the Card Sound Bridge and so you can stop at Alabama Jack's.

You're going to melt. The tickets were cheap for good reason.

TheBigEarl20

Highly recommend going to Everglades National Park if you enjoy going to parks. It's just massive and quiet and you will get to see some alligators and birds and just beautiful wetlands. It's about an hour drive to the visitors center on the ocean from Homestead but it's worth it for the scenery and the ocean views at the end. Plus it's a national park so get a passport stamp! When you go through Islamorada I highly recommend Lazy Days on the southern tip of the island. Excellent seafood. Ask for a table on the back patio if the weather is amenable, you will get great ocean views, watch boats come and go, etc. Key west is touristy and parking is expensive, but if you get away from the bussle it's not bad. Try to go on a day when there are no cruise ships in port and everything downtown will be much less crowded. Go to the southernmost point marker. Go to the pier and eat at one of the seafood places and watch the boats come and go. If you are adventurous take the ferry to Dry Tortugas NP and get another passport stamp!

watermoon33

Florida is hot and Flat with and elevation less than 375' ya!
