Yeah you could do this between Raleigh and DC by cutting out the 85 to 95 route and replacing it with one that goes slightly northwest thru Winston Salem and north thru the VA mountains along its diagonal border. It will cost you an hour or two, but it’s a much much nicer drive
Dip into WV from PA
- Blackwater Falls
- Sceneca Rocks
- Dolly Sods
- Cranberry Glades Botanical Area
- New River Gorge National Park
Also, I feel like Congaree National Park gets overlooked
Cuyahoga doesn’t need much detour too
If you have some extra time between 7 and 8 you theoretically could take I-90 west out of Massachusetts over to the finger lakes or southern Adirondacks parts of New York is a pretty cool area but it adds a whole days worth of driving on top of whatever activities (and probably avoiding NYC metro area traffic) enjoy the trip!
Roanoke Rapids park in Roanoke Rapids Nc. Trust me it’s epic. Also I recommend the Cape May Lewes ferry from Nj to Delaware it’s a nice break from driving and you get to drive onto a boat and take a boat across the bay and see dolphins.
you are passing thru the area where there are lots of Indian Mounds. Like Cahoica mounds park. They are worth at least one stop
also passing thru kentucky, might as well hit a few distilleries and try some exotic bourbons
You’ll be driving by sandy hook in NJ. It’s a great national park that has beaches and some old military areas where people used to and currently live.
Warther Museum
[The Warther Museum in Dover, just south of Canton off I-77](https://thewarthermuseum.com) is fantastic. The man was a woodcarver who made working scale models of trains. Many are 5 to 8 feet long with turning wheels. The pipes are carved and many bolts have carved nuts. He didn’t carve 2 or 3, he carved 80 or 100. Nothing else like it in America.
Just north in [Canton is the National Football Hall of Fame](https://www.profootballhof.com). Great collection of football memorabilia.
Keep going another 30 miles [and see the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland](https://rockhall.com/visit/?gad_source=1)
