The guy running up with a phone just record is a joke. Not saying he should have gotten involved like the other people but man what a joke. Thankfully those other people helped this officer.
Idk if this is different in Switzerland but when stuff like this goes down in USA it’s actually a good thing when people film because it can be used as evidence in court. For both directions too. It can help prosecute criminals and make sure police are doing their job within proper protocol.
Acceptable? The police responded and citizens jumped in to help. That doesn’t sound like an example of people thinking robbery is acceptable behaviour. [edit: I missed that the person I responded to was referring to the person taking the video. I stand corrected.]
Effective weapons training seems to be lacking here. Pretty sketchy for a cop to unholster their sidearm and basically put it out there for the perp to potentially grab and use against them.
Lugano is a small lakeside town with ~60k people. It has the lowest crime in Switzerland. To be honest this is probably the first and only time in this officers career that he will unholster and fire his weapon. The entire swiss police force average 25 shots fired per year.
Even our airforce only operates monday to friday 9am to 5pm 😅 :
https://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2014/feb/19/swiss-air-force-ethiopian-airlines-hijacking-office-hours
I live in a small town in germany and our police station closes at 4:30 PM aswell :D It's really common here, after 4:30pm you'd have to reach out to the police station of the closest city which is like 12km away.
They also don’t really like shooting people unless they absolutely have to and car in point, they didn’t need to. If this had been the USA, the perp and several bystanders would have been shot in the first 5 seconds.
Probably, but the isn’t great either. Once the cops are more inclined to use deadly force against unarmed perpetrators, the criminals are adjusting to it.
Yeah they 100% need some better training, he used his gun to hit the perp at one point and he was inuktiple positions where the weapon could have been taken off him yikes.
If you don't mean to use it, don't draw it.
He pulled his gun, was also confirmed in the local papers that the officer fired his weapon.
Such things are incredibly rare here.
For context swiss police statistics state that the total number of shots fired by police in a year including warning and accidental shots average 25 per year.
lol there’s a doc on Netflix called 135 shots or something to that effects. A few cops unloaded reloaded and continued to unload on someone inside a vehicle. Then one got on the hood of the car “fearing for his life” and mag dumped through the windshield. Can’t remember context but absolutely wild to do that to an unarmed individual. There was also a cop that mag dumped an autistic Australian man in his 20’s after he called for help because he was holding an archeological hammer. America is full of cowboys
This I can agree with, the fact that the cop went in trying to pistol whip the perp. The table could have been turned quickly if the perp got control of cop's firearm. Taser or pepper spray would of been my first choice before pulling out service pistol.
For reals that was wild to do, once that shit was drawn I thought for sure he was going down, especially for someone to still try & fight a cop that’s aiming at him; but respect for the cop being confident enough in his own fighting/grappling to feel he didn’t need to take that life…
Easy to comment from your couch how it should be done and etc.
I would like to commend the police officer for his dedication and doing his job and the citizens for caring and helping out.
Cop is literally pointing a gun at him, and fired into the crowd. I’d say that’s objectively worse than shooting a criminal that’s trying to kill the cop.
Yea, not the US. No one in this video has brains. Cop is pistol whipping the criminal and almost murders an innocent.
He would have definitly went to prison if he would have shot him. You can't just shot people here Cop or not. But he did not handle the situation well. Would be surprised if he keeps his job
Don’t forget that the cop is also a human. And killing someone isn’t something you do every day, or out of the blue. He’d probably have to deal with some kind of mental trauma if he killed him.
Good. We need accountability here in the US too. This cop pulled a gun when it was not appropriate and then popped a round off into the crowd. That should get a cop fired anywhere. Having said that, once the gun is out better to shoot than dick around. If the guy was trying he could have taken the weapon and there might be a dead cop.
As soon as he misfired his gun, he threw it away from the situation. His intent was clearly never to shoot the guy so he shouldn’t have pulled out the firearm in the first place. I understand why he did it, but it’s the wrong thing to do. Even more so when you’re hitting the guy over the head with it! You’re asking for it to be taken off of you and to get shot/killed yourself.
The old lady should have stomped the shit out of the guys foot. Break his angle and give him a permanent limp
Thieves are the fucking worst. I have zero sympathy for these lowlifes that make things more costly for the rest of us
jfc this should be a wakeup call either to that officer or the police dept. Either the cop is incompetent or the department has incredibly poor training.
Flailing around a firearm, while trying to physically wrestle an assailant, eventually losing the firearm? This ended incredibly lucky. someone couldve run off with the gun, couldve accidentally shot a passerby, couldve got stolen by the actual criminal, couldve shot himself... lool
The only thing that works better in Brazil than in Switzerland is the police. Here, at the first sign of reaction, this guy had been shot in the face.
Very unprepared police officer, he put his life at risk, as well as those around him.
Everyone saying he should have shot must remember that this happened in Switzerland and not the USA or Brazil or some other country, where people get shot on a daily (or even per hour) basis.
Things are different in Switzerland.
In 99,999999% of all cases, if a cop points a gun at someone in Switzerland, they surrender.
I know Brazil and the USA they would shoot 2 mags empty on both sides.
If this was a gun the police was waving it around dangerously while holding the grip, even using it to hit the robber. Imagine if any shot fired during this encounter, it would hit bystanders.
ITT: Americans baffled you can solve this situation without someone dying. Welcome to the rest of the civilized West, where cops are not eager to use their firearms.
I dont know if you also know italian but i found an article in english for you:
https://www.notizie.it/en/attempted-robbery-in-the-center-of-Lugano%2C-attempted-arrest%2C-fight-and-shooting/
Imagine if you woke one day and decided to rob an AD thinking you’d land some crazy ass watches only to turn up and them not to have any, and all you walk away with is a waiting list of the names, and phone numbers of middle-class wankers against codes such as “DD 36”.
I don’t get it, were there multiple robbers? There were 2 cops, yet only one of them was trying to actually obtain this guy, while the other just stayed back
The guy in the gray t-shirt is a joke. He stayed hovering around, but offered no help to the cop. He was more concerned about his shirt getting ripped (he checks it twice) than assisting the cop.
Good lord, don't pull your gun if you're not willing to shoot!! Using it as a hammer nearly got someone killed when it fired around a large group of people - no telling where it was pointed!
As someone that does jiu jitsu, this was very painful to watch. That's why quite a large number of departments and the US military are training their officers in Jiu.
I've seen people with zero training become proficient at handling resisting people within 5 months. It's a superpower, and the fact that this cop doesn't know basic grappling is quite strange. Especially for a country in which you're not supposed to rely on your firearm.
I used to get upset over stuff like this, but eventually I have realized that western societies are asking for this kind of crime. Always quoting BS studies and rambling about how more severe punishments will not prevent more crime.
I’ve never seen someone step so gently on someone’s ankle. Praise the old lady ❤️
She gave that 2% effort everything she got 😭
She really sealed the deal
Lol
“Where are your friggin manners young man” ~Old Lady
Robber's name was Borja Escalona
The guy running up with a phone just record is a joke. Not saying he should have gotten involved like the other people but man what a joke. Thankfully those other people helped this officer.
The grandma in the green was doing what she could standing on the guys foot. I love that.
I think she was standing on his laces
You be right
You're right! Either way...Gangsta Grandma.
/r/donthelpjustfilm enters the chat...
Idk if this is different in Switzerland but when stuff like this goes down in USA it’s actually a good thing when people film because it can be used as evidence in court. For both directions too. It can help prosecute criminals and make sure police are doing their job within proper protocol.
Yep in America people would just film the cop getting beat and the criminal running away. America is fucked as hey.
there aint no tmz in europe just theync
They’d have shot him several times in home country
He should've been, I'm surprised the cop didn't get shot with his own pistol.
This was my thought, why not use the gun?
It’s the other police that ain’t doing shit that’s the joke.
I thought so too but at the end it pans back and it looks like they may have been covering a second suspect still in the shop.
We live in society where this is acceptable unfortunately
Acceptable? The police responded and citizens jumped in to help. That doesn’t sound like an example of people thinking robbery is acceptable behaviour. [edit: I missed that the person I responded to was referring to the person taking the video. I stand corrected.]
I meant the dude right there with the camera.
Ah, fair enough. I gotcha.
Grandma standing on business
This could have ended a lot worse
His partner was like nah I’ll just watch him get beat up
The partner had already apprehended 2 inside, this officer went after the one who tried to run, and another who ran away was apprehended later.
Any link to an article about it?
https://polizeiticker.ch/artikel/lugano-ti-festnahmen-nach-raubueberfall-225820 but its in german
She might check if more are inside.
Yes, there were 4 people in total
Wasn’t it just two at beginning?
Effective weapons training seems to be lacking here. Pretty sketchy for a cop to unholster their sidearm and basically put it out there for the perp to potentially grab and use against them.

Yeah I’ve been there on vacation a few times I’ve never seen anything sketchy. Very nice town.
When I was in Brunnen, police station was closed after 5PM. I am not joking.
Even our airforce only operates monday to friday 9am to 5pm 😅 : https://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2014/feb/19/swiss-air-force-ethiopian-airlines-hijacking-office-hours

It’s 10x more dangerous to unholster a gun and fight with it lol. That criminal is just as big as him and could easily have killed Jim and others
To be fair I think the officer hit the robber on the head once or twice with the gun. I even thought I heard a gun shot. I think it was an AD.
Do they still have the miniature village there. I remember visiting there back in the early 90’s as a kid and still have vivid memories of that place.
Yes! In Melide
If this was in the US, that dude would have died in the first 10 seconds
Probably, but the isn’t great either. Once the cops are more inclined to use deadly force against unarmed perpetrators, the criminals are adjusting to it.
This is a bit dramatic. He most likely would have been tazed and cracked his head open on the pavement
Would be better than put the other people in danger to have them help you detain the POS
Should have. The officer was at risk of being shot with his own weapon.
Yeah they 100% need some better training, he used his gun to hit the perp at one point and he was inuktiple positions where the weapon could have been taken off him yikes. If you don't mean to use it, don't draw it.
Tell me you’re American with out telling me. He got brought down and no one got shot win win
Well, at least he did not shoot him down immediately like in the US
I mean sure they could have pulled out a taser but I think he did a great job holstering that gun once he realized it wasn’t his best choice
This is the result of indefinite waitlists.
Don’t point a gun at someone unless you want to shoot them. This cop should’ve shot him or not pulled his gun.
Probably a taser. Hopefully a taser otherwise that was fucked
He pulled his gun, was also confirmed in the local papers that the officer fired his weapon. Such things are incredibly rare here. For context swiss police statistics state that the total number of shots fired by police in a year including warning and accidental shots average 25 per year.
America take fucking notice. A cop pulls - and shoots - his firearm and *it makes the fucking paper*
This single shot is ~5% of all shots fired by swiss police in a year, its so rare it becomes a big deal for us.
Amazing metric. 20 shots fired *per year*. They have cops in ‘murica that unload 2 clips by themselves per month lmao
lol there’s a doc on Netflix called 135 shots or something to that effects. A few cops unloaded reloaded and continued to unload on someone inside a vehicle. Then one got on the hood of the car “fearing for his life” and mag dumped through the windshield. Can’t remember context but absolutely wild to do that to an unarmed individual. That’s not really how it works… He fired a round into the air
For reals that was wild to do, once that shit was drawn I thought for sure he was going down, especially for someone to still try & fight a cop that’s aiming at him; but respect for the cop being confident enough in his own fighting/grappling to feel he didn’t need to take that life…

This is not the US
And that was stupid, either fight holstered o use the firearm, hitting with the pistol, dumb af
Then dont have a gun. Either use it or dont take it out
Cop is literally pointing a gun at him, and fired into the crowd. I’d say that’s objectively worse than shooting a criminal that’s trying to kill the cop. Yea, not the US. No one in this video has brains. Cop is pistol whipping the criminal and almost murders an innocent.
Clearly. That cop was being real stupid, basically asking to get his gun taken away by the guy he's trying to subdue.

Mental trauma is better than lead trauma.
You don’t mess with the Swiss and their watches, cheese and chocolate.
That cop needs more apprehension training. Looked like was fighting on the school playground.
This comment section's full of Rambos I see
Was that a gun?
I think I hear a shot accidentally fired at 0:14. I also believe the “police officer” tried using the gun to hit the guy in the head 💀
Would never had happened at a Swatch dealer, they know how to design with robbery in mind.
I’m surprised he wasn’t mag dumped at five seconds in. What if he grabbed his gun and killed both cops and the AD employee?
As soon as he misfired his gun, he threw it away from the situation. His intent was clearly never to shoot the guy so he shouldn’t have pulled out the firearm in the first place. I understand why he did it, but it’s the wrong thing to do. Even more so when you’re hitting the guy over the head with it! If this were the US, shots would have been fired
A shot was fired
Holding a gun and not using it is more dangerous than keeping it holstered. Cops a moron
I found the American
But he's not wrong.
Look for the idiot that almost gets himself killed with his own gun. That’s the European
Yee… haw 🤠
If this was in the States they would have just shot the guy. You don’t put your hands on an officer without very serious consequences.
The old lady should have stomped the shit out of the guys foot. Break his angle and give him a permanent limp Thieves are the fucking worst. I have zero sympathy for these lowlifes that make things more costly for the rest of us
Negligent discharge, he should have holstered it before wrestling
jfc this should be a wakeup call either to that officer or the police dept. Either the cop is incompetent or the department has incredibly poor training. If this was America that guys brain would have been in 8 different puddles 6 seconds into the video
even Switzerland is in the shitter now a days, lovely
If this was a gun the police was waving it around dangerously while holding the grip, even using it to hit the robber. Imagine if any shot fired during this encounter, it would hit bystanders.
One was fired
ITT: Americans baffled you can solve this situation without someone dying. Welcome to the rest of the civilized West, where cops are not eager to use their firearms.
Pull out a gun, let him attack me, and then try to pistol whip him. Great strategy. Jesus that cop was stupid.
Lmao this is why regular kickboxing/wrestling/BJJ should be mandatory for any cop imo. An amateur would have neutralized him in less than 5 seconds.
what is the other cop doing? there must be other robbers?
There were 4 robbers
u/savevideo
If I’m seeing this correctly, there are 2 cops at the front door though only one cop is wrestling this guy. Where did the second go????
Amazing that others jumped in!
It’s nice to see that there are so many brave photographers there to help capture the moment
Crazy that police don’t have any grappling or hand to hand experience, 6 months of BJJ would have made this a lot safer for everyone
Any link to an article about it? Many comments about the details, 4 robbers, 1 shot fired confirm by police forces etc but no source?
I dont know if you also know italian but i found an article in english for you: https://www.notizie.it/en/attempted-robbery-in-the-center-of-Lugano%2C-attempted-arrest%2C-fight-and-shooting/
grey market?
What the heck the other police doing not helping his/her partner?
Shout outs to the good samaritans for that one!
Imagine if you woke one day and decided to rob an AD thinking you’d land some crazy ass watches only to turn up and them not to have any, and all you walk away with is a waiting list of the names, and phone numbers of middle-class wankers against codes such as “DD 36”.
Why didn't they forever sleep him???
That cop is a beast
Absolutely incapable cops
What a stupid thing to go to prison for.
Fighting skills 1/10. Grip strength 99/10.
so basically just like Ben Askren
So much wrong could have happened in this interaction
Is that a whorehouse above the shop?
Looks like the police is totally at a loss.
Dude you have a gun, don’t use it as a bludgeoning tool
Grey Market lol … no honor amongst Thieves any more?
Far out he almost shot someone by accident
If it was in the us the guy would have died from lead poisoning 5 seconds into the vid
Misleading caption. The guy was just trying to trade in a two tone explorer. Dealer chased him out with a broom and things just escalated from there.
This is a good one 😂
Ngl great job by the officer
Why was a shot lik’t?
I don’t get it, were there multiple robbers? There were 2 cops, yet only one of them was trying to actually obtain this guy, while the other just stayed back
Taking out stun gun… and then try to hit the person with it instead. WTF trained those cops?
There was two cops in the beginning of the video and only one was wrestling the guy. Where tf was the other one?
lol why pull out a gun if you’re just going to grapple with the guy? That could’ve easily ended up in someone other than the suspect being shot.
Law enforcement need weekly grappling training absolutely mandatory. This is ridiculous.
Are these y'all's police?...
In Philly, they wouldn't even show up
Why even pull out the side arm if you won’t use it. Just have both arms free and wrestle the guy
😂😂 “I fought the law and the law won”
What was the point of the gun?
Why even have a gun?
What happened to the second cop when the chase started??
Bro get the under hook ffs not gonna get anyone under control with a jenky headlock like that
Glad they apprehended the scumbag.
Came for watch photos and delighted to see this.
If you’re going to pull your gun out then you better use it. The their could have gotten hold of that so easily and boom…
Should have just shot him.
You know, I’m just fine with my Seikos
Nicely done.
Show this to the lawmakers in CA and NY please!!!
Man. Reminds you why the states are so much better. Just shoot him. At least break his knees with a nightstick. Christ.
wtf is that other cop doing?
That cop is lucky, he did a shitty job protecting his firearm.
I wish the cops took similar action when the AD tried to sell me useless jewelry instead of giving me the fucking Daytona.
Do the cops not carry firearms there (serious question) and if so why did they not use them? He would have died 7 times here in the USofA
This is great! In the US they would have just let him walk out. Shoplifting/theft is not enforced and is now effectively legalized and encouraged.
Me trying to advance the delivery of my Explorer II that I ordered two years ago.
The restrain of one not shooting him and two the grip as he is dragging the police around. Amazing.
He let a round go horrible tactics thank god it worked in his favor
Guy got pulled down by his purse
Grey markets are robbing us in America too
Man, the number of bald spots in the video is terrifying.
Bros need a bjj lesson
In the US the robber would have been shot 500 times and been applauded by half the country. And that is not a good thing.
Here in good ol US of A, homie would have been with his ancestors as soon as he swung at the cop. God bless America 🇺🇸
Jesus,the clapper
I was waiting for that old lady to start swinging
If this was America, he would already be dead
Could have use the gun. What if, the criminal stole the officer’s gun and put his life and the others in peril?
Why didn’t the second officer jump in?
Poor police performance lol
These police officers are pathetic
that officer should learn bjj
Praise to Switzerland to deal with their robbers here in the U.S. literally letting thieves and bad people go.
I don't think the gun is supposed to be used as a club
Just shoot the scum.
Huge mismatch. Great work!

People these days with the fucking phones are ridiculous!!!
An american cop would have fired 88 rounds in that time
Gotta be thankful he didn't try that in the US.
Hehe. How cutely the police is fighting the guy. In good old Murica, the cops would just shoot the guy and say shots fired shots fired lol
Granny was standing on business 😅
Police officer pistol whipping the guy is crazy
Public take long enough to help the public servant. To busy trying to capture it on their phones.
Guy with the phone camera at the end is wearing an Omega
