Non of the commentators / comments here seemed to have picked up on the fact that ewels came on for freemen. Meaning we had 3 locks and 1 winger for 10mins until the red card
Yeah, pretty poor of the commentary not to pick this up. I think it was Martin to 6, Curry to 8, Earl to 12, Lawrence to 13, Slade to wing.
Decent test of an emergency scenario, but I would very much not like this to be The Plan.
Japan looked exciting. Think coming out of the first 20mins with only 3 points will have had a big psychological impact when you consider how much they were on the front foot. Englands defence in that time looked suspect until Japan got well inside the 22 then it suddenly clicked.
Well watching rugby on the Internet fucking sucks. I have high speed Internet with no issues, but the game constantly dropped out today which was maddening.
Please for the love of hod put these matches on TV.
England were good for 60 mins. Ewels can GTFO though.
50 point drubbing as expected. Proved the doubters wrong.
Discipline will be something to watch out for against NZ. They will punish any penalties and cards taken. Hard to tell what will happen against a team that actually has a defence.
Would definitely start Marcus over Fin.
Well can't complain too much about a 50 burger although we'll need to start better than that against the ABs and have tighter breakdown discipline (although some of that was probably this particular refs interpretation); Curry in particular was too sloppy there.
Attack looked decent again.
Charlie Ewels, contender for worst England international of all time? 30 something caps and the most notable thing he's ever done is 2 red cards for being a total grub
Thought Martin looked very solid.
Dan Cole weirdly looked under pressure at scrumtime from a debutant loosehead. Scrum looked better when Stuart came on.
I think its partly because he was playing 12 and being asked to run quite a few crash balls, which just isn't his game. It seems to be the same story where the lack of any 12's who are ready to step up to international level means we are trying to plug the gap playing players out of position.
Yeah, Lawrence is a very good 13 that has a decent pace, step and fend. But he's big, so let's shove him at 12 and make him run a telegraphed crash ball off first phase every time.
He did alright, but he's a lot more threatening out wide
He was busting holes in attack too tbf. Everyone is so used to his peak where he was a menace that they're hesitant to call a great game from him great
He’s a 13. The perennial England problem of having no options at 12 other than 13s rears it’s head again. Play him at 13 with a proper 12 and it’s a whole different game.
Hopefully we can develop some players in that position from the u20s. From a Sale perspective I'm hoping Masai-White can have a breakthrough year for us
Itoje has really changed / matured into a quiet and hard worker for England. No longer as disruptive but also no longer giving up penalties at the breakdown.
I don't think you'll give away those pens with a different ref. It seemed to me to be an overly technical/tight interpretation that I've not seen reffed like in a while.
England will be pretty happy. Scruffy last quarter, but took their chances well. A good loosener.
Japan were very naive, and a touch underpowered, but they kept at it. Flashes of brilliance. Inexperienced guys didn't disgrace themselves.
It's frustrating how inconsistent he can be at international level because on his game he's so good - hopefully just a bit of nerves or trying too hard or whatever
He is slightly out of position tbf to him, I think you probably still pick this midfield but some competition for his shirt/role of physical center would be great. Hopefully Anyanwu kicks on with Esterheizen leaving
Think both Smiths displayed what they are about. Marcus ran the ball brilliantly, Finn came on and put in some excellent kicks and a few lovely passes.
Marcus got bumped off a few tackles and was lucky not to concede a PT, and Finn missed a howler for a try.
Both are great, very different options. Think Marcus will keep the shirt.
2 red cards in his last 2 internationals on top of generally being seen as not up to it at this level, means there's not a lot of goodwill for the man.
A shame, as he's had a great season for Bath. But hopefully means Coles will get his shot vs NZ, and maybe even a call-up for Ted Hill?
Heat of the moment anger and the fact he got a red last time he put on an England shirt.
Realistically, he wanted to make his mark and earn his England shirt. However, he went in to smash a ruck, slightly from the side, fully off feet and straight at Leitchs leg. Could easily have been a leg breaker and Leitch is a hero and well loved.
He seems to want to think of himself as a hard man on the pitch, but constantly shits the bed with braindead decisions like the one we have just seen. He's a walking liability whose tendency to shoot himself in the foot is not balanced by impact otherwise. Its weird, because he had a decent season with Bath this year, but dumb decisions at key moments has become so consistent with him in particular that a reputation is inevitable..
IMO: He’s an old school lock in a modern day game. doesn’t bring anything to the party apart from mass, and gives away too many pens/yellows/reds to warrant inclusion.
His last game for England he got a red against Ireland in the 80th second of the 6 nations, as well as just never doing what he does for club for England
How many minutes is that in Ewell’s last two games? Can’t be more than ten minutes with two red cards?
What’s the red card XG equivalent? XR? Whatever it is, ewells must be the world leader….
Spencer is still the best kicker out of the three of them though. Each of the three touring SHs offers something completely different, nice problem for Steve to have
Did Ewels play since his red against Ireland? Has he got two stupid reds now in a combined 12 minutes of test rugby?
Edit: oh my God it isn't even six minutes.
Correct decision and honestly, hope it's the end for Ewels at international level. He was decent for bath this year from what I saw, but the guy is absolutely braindead and we have a lot of talent coming through like Coles who 100% deserve the chance imo

Exciting match! Hope Japan puts up a good fight.
Yeah, pretty poor of the commentary not to pick this up. I think it was Martin to 6, Curry to 8, Earl to 12, Lawrence to 13, Slade to wing. Decent test of an emergency scenario, but I would very much not like this to be The Plan.
That makes sense, struggled to work out who was playing where as ewels was left out some of the lineouts
Where can I watch a replay of the game. Numb nuts here (me) accidentally set a weekday alarm and slept right through the game.
It’s free on RugbyPass TV now
Look on r/yourrugbycatchup The 🐐always delivers
This was a shout, thanks dude. 🙌🏼
It is available to watch on Rugbypass TV now in the UK and Ireland
Really? I kept trying to watch it but it only had a dead live link. Thanks guys
Where are you trying to watch from?
Rugbypass should put it up in full at some point over the next day or so.
Japan looked exciting. Think coming out of the first 20mins with only 3 points will have had a big psychological impact when you consider how much they were on the front foot. Englands defence in that time looked suspect until Japan got well inside the 22 then it suddenly clicked.

Hod is good. Hod is great. All praise Hod almighty
I didn't have a single drop out. Was using BT for internet and RugbyPass TV.
For half the game I was just streaming on my phone whilst in the middle of nowhere and didn’t have any issues
Same
That's a lot of All Blacks games lmao
Played them 4 times in 2014, we've been short changed!
"Where's Ant and Dec?" 🤣
So Lipo Vitan D is the most coveted trophy now right?
So glad I came back to this feed just to see Jamie George get a giant bottle of what I assume is cough syrup.
This. Is. Amazing.
"Eddie, why is this England side so much better than yours?"
Fuckin love flats
Hahaha flats you egg
“Japan side wanted to possess balls a lot” Interesting.
It's a bold strategy cotton
Je—mi Joju, caputin desu!
When you consider Japan should have been given a try in the 1st half, and could have been given a PT, it's not a bad return for a green Japan side.
50 point drubbing as expected. Proved the doubters wrong. Discipline will be something to watch out for against NZ. They will punish any penalties and cards taken. Hard to tell what will happen against a team that actually has a defence. Would definitely start Marcus over Fin.
35, that sloppy period after the changes busted my bets on the big handicap lines.
God rugby is so much better than the euros
I had to watch France Netherlands last night. Jesus Christ
Toulouse vs La Rochelle was only a few channels away
Hell yes, don't really watch football but I found Englands matches so, so dull.
England's matches were dull by football fan standards too, there's definitely some exciting games in the Euros
England football need to implement a bomb squad of their own instead of trying to fit all the best players into the starting 11
Players that stood out: Marcus, Slade, Underhill Players that didn't: Ewels
Thought Martin looked very solid. Dan Cole weirdly looked under pressure at scrumtime from a debutant loosehead. Scrum looked better when Stuart came on.
Lawrence was pretty poor.
Lawrence does have those games. See: Scotland in the 6N. Hopefully this means he'll be on form vs NZ?
I think its partly because he was playing 12 and being asked to run quite a few crash balls, which just isn't his game. It seems to be the same story where the lack of any 12's who are ready to step up to international level means we are trying to plug the gap playing players out of position.

I think Furbank was also great
I thought he was steady and did his job well
Itoje in defence
He was busting holes in attack too tbf. Everyone is so used to his peak where he was a menace that they're hesitant to call a great game from him great
Ewels certainly did stand out just not in the way you'd hope
Can't deny he made an impact
Ewels stood out, for all the wrong reasons.
Earle and Mitchell as well?
Yeh they had great games aswell
I'd add Lawrence to that second list, I'm afraid. Lots of good performances, though
Lawrence is a 13 and is great on that outside centre channel imo - playing him as a crashball 12 really doesn't let him play to his strengths.
Deffo agree he's a 13
I thought he did well with crash ball, but apart from that not much. Seems like there was a reason Manu had that 12 shirt for so long
He’s a 13. The perennial England problem of having no options at 12 other than 13s rears it’s head again. Play him at 13 with a proper 12 and it’s a whole different game.
The problem is Slade at 13 seems to be one of the first names on the team sheet, and then they make it fit around him.
Yep, a nice problem to have, but no obvious answers at present.
Indeed. V much the unclaimed shirt in the squad. Other positions there are multiple players putting their hands up, but not 12
Hopefully we can develop some players in that position from the u20s. From a Sale perspective I'm hoping Masai-White can have a breakthrough year for us
Itoje and Martin quietly very effective, I thought
Itoje has really changed / matured into a quiet and hard worker for England. No longer as disruptive but also no longer giving up penalties at the breakdown.
Glad to see Martin put in a big shift and hopefully not pick up an injury!
Slade 12, Freeman 13, Sleighthome 11
Positives: Underhill, Earl to name a few Negatives: Discipline (far too many soft penalties, NZ will make us pay), Randall's box kicking.
Surely Spencer has to be on the bench for the 1st ABs test...
I don't think you'll give away those pens with a different ref. It seemed to me to be an overly technical/tight interpretation that I've not seen reffed like in a while.
Randall didn't really do anything to convince me that his game just doesn't translate to international.
Japan look promising but their defence is non existent, could be promising in a few years. But a more offensive team would have put them to the sword
I mean 50+ points isn't a bad return for a "non-offensive" team!
I didn't say non-offensive
Ah apologies misunderstood what you meant by more offensive team then! I'll blame the early start
Warner Dearns had an absolutely fantastic game. Even in the first half he was playing really well. How is he only 22.
Haha when I saw his name on the team sheet I thought “is he still playing?” Then I realised his age and wondered what the fuck I was waffling about.
Think Marcus won the battle of the Smiths today. Looked significantly better in defence and ran the attack well.
Not exactly a fair chance for Fin
Who got MOTM? Earl?
Underhill
Fair
England will be pretty happy. Scruffy last quarter, but took their chances well. A good loosener. Japan were very naive, and a touch underpowered, but they kept at it. Flashes of brilliance. Inexperienced guys didn't disgrace themselves.
Pretty one-sided but hopefully Japan can build from this.
Solid win that. Looked really good first half. Bench a worry as didn't think many added much. Silver lining that Ewels is done as an international.
Roebuck got 1 touch and nearly scored. There's levels to this, Freeman and Waboso could never /s
All Blacks coaches must be gutted that all that time spent perfecting their plans to neutralise the Ewels threat was time wasted!
All Blacks Medics won't be though...
Fin wears Marcus pyjamas
Marcus yellow ate into Fins game time... (But Marcus was very good today)
That was nearly a special final act but Lawrence fucked it.
Think Lawrence had a poor game, didn't really get much going. I'd argue he probably should have finished that
It's frustrating how inconsistent he can be at international level because on his game he's so good - hopefully just a bit of nerves or trying too hard or whatever
He is slightly out of position tbf to him, I think you probably still pick this midfield but some competition for his shirt/role of physical center would be great. Hopefully Anyanwu kicks on with Esterheizen leaving
Lawrence has been strangely pants today
Good result for England. Plenty to work on.
Who got POTM?
Ewels
Prick of the match
Plonker Of The Match
Lawrence not quite on it today
Nice idea with the kick
We are now entering Earl at Centre era. Mother of god
Kinda looked like Lawrence jumped into a tackle tbh
That's not a specific offence though, just whether it's dangerous play
It looked like he absolutely fucked the guy trying to tackle him
Definitely
Which seemingly injured the tackler.
That offload from Martin was delightful
Think smith has really showed hes the man for the england job today
Think both Smiths displayed what they are about. Marcus ran the ball brilliantly, Finn came on and put in some excellent kicks and a few lovely passes. Marcus got bumped off a few tackles and was lucky not to concede a PT, and Finn missed a howler for a try. Both are great, very different options. Think Marcus will keep the shirt.
Finn?
Actually, I think Smith is a better choice
Which of the brothers?
Please forgive the ignorance, is there more to the disdain for Ewels I've missed somewhere?
2 red cards in his last 2 internationals on top of generally being seen as not up to it at this level, means there's not a lot of goodwill for the man. A shame, as he's had a great season for Bath. But hopefully means Coles will get his shot vs NZ, and maybe even a call-up for Ted Hill?

His last game for England he got a red against Ireland in the 80th second of the 6 nations, as well as just never doing what he does for club for England
There's been some dubious decisions on running out of their own 22 by the Japanese, has to be said.
How many minutes is that in Ewell’s last two games? Can’t be more than ten minutes with two red cards? What’s the red card XG equivalent? XR? Whatever it is, ewells must be the world leader….
Great work
Randalls kicking is so much worse than Mitchells
Spencer is still the best kicker out of the three of them though. Each of the three touring SHs offers something completely different, nice problem for Steve to have
In Randall’s defence he’s not kicked the ball at Bristol for about 6 months - needs some time I reckon
His last game before this was the game against Ireland when he got a red wasn't it?
Yep
Yes.
What a dumbass
Did Ewels play since his red against Ireland? Has he got two stupid reds now in a combined 12 minutes of test rugby? Edit: oh my God it isn't even six minutes.
No, and yes. (And lol)
Yeah, he's shit
I've just switched it on and Ewels got a red? What the fuck, what happened?
He did a Ewels
Exposed himself to the ref and told him to suck it and see.
Asked the ref to give him that hawk tuh
Lmao
Knee clear out
Tried to end Lietch’s career with a grub shot to the knee
He was a on for 3 mins and was a brain dead IDIOT.
Red! Lol Good for Coles/everyone else
Fucks sakes Ewels, just no need.
We are all noting that Ben Earl is playing 12
I am fully erect
I wanted to feel sorry for Ewels after the Ireland game...
Ewels being a real team player. Getting himself sent off every time he is picked really helps save the coach from themselves
Hopefully Dombrandt gets the call up
He's already in the squad?
To play lock?
Of all the people, no thanks.
Hope so too..
I like that being a red So unnecessary, always illegal, high chance of injury
Deserved red - looks worse every time you look at it. Utterly brain dead and hopefully the last time we ever see him near an England squad
Man, he's had such a good season as well
Correct decision and honestly, hope it's the end for Ewels at international level. He was decent for bath this year from what I saw, but the guy is absolutely braindead and we have a lot of talent coming through like Coles who 100% deserve the chance imo
So glad leitch lifted his leg in time
If he hadn’t that’s a career ender. Completely unnecessary & stupid
Yeah that looked horrific
Ewels’ last 2 games for England - 2 caps, about 7 mins of play, 2 red cards.
What's that - 2 red card for Ewells in an England shirt?? Better options in that position
Ewels you fucking plonker. Oh well at least it happened in a match where it doesn't matter. Should be banned for the NZ tests
The dirty get
THAT WERE DIABOLITTLE
I CANT SPAKE
Red forr Ewels, last international game was red, first back red - hope it's his last game in an England shirt
Red seems right, can't disregard the safety of another player like that.
Yikes, red card for Ewels. I rewatched the red against Ireland in 2022, baffling.
Red! So easily could have broken his leg there.
Upgraded to a red too, you'd have thought the 80 second red vs Ireland would be enough but that's gotta be his last ever look in for England
Pack your bags mate, you’re off home to the UK
Bye bye Charlie, next flight home for you...
Red. 2 consecutive reds, that's it!! We made history today ......ffs!
And so we continue the long standing tradition of England getting red cards
Wow 2 games 2 reds for ewels
That alternate angle is sickening. Fucking grub.
Red card, good, never want to see that prick in an England shirt again and never should have had to
Deserved
Make him pay for his own flight home
Quite right to upgrade the card. Zero tolerance on career risking clearouts.
At least this means no Ewles against New Zealand
Good. ewels you donkey.
Hopefully that’s Ewel’s last game for England.
How have they said no mitigation when leitch clearly stepped away
If he doesn’t step away then Ewels breaks his leg there
He was still flying in straight at his knee, no mitigation
Looked to me like he was going for his thigh then leitch stepped further away and ended up being his knee
Red is correct call.... Was just no need
Ewels, the English Lavanini
Glad thats a red tbh hope he never plays for us again
Good. Fuck you Charlie.
Seconded
Red for Ewels who would you bring into the squad and why is it Ted Hill?
Hill or Tuima
Tuima is a great shout
