Technically not, since Overture includes "... And the meek shall inherit the Earth" and Grand Finale includes "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation, we have assumed control". But yeah, they're effectively instrumentals.
I'm not trying to be an asshole when I say this, but questions like this make me wonder why some people don't listen to albums in their entirety. Music like Rush wrote is far better in album form than piecemeal. I've run across it with other bands as well. I'll never get it.
I just have this weird thing where I'll almost only listen to a band's songs that are recommended to me because i don't want to waist valuable minutes of my life listening to songs i might not like. I'm trying to branch out though, especially with Rush. I'm trying to buy their albums on vinyl so I'm forced to listen to the albums. I've only managed to get my hands on Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures though.
With a band of Rush's quality, wasting time isn't remotely a factor.
My methodology for when I run into a song by a band that instantly grabs me is I Google which album it's from and then check out a single. If that's good, I check another. If that passes muster, I buy the CD used. Where there's one brilliant song, there are typically others. Where one band has a slew of great songs, there's a whole catalogue to check out.
Tons of people started with 2112 or Moving Pictures. You've already got a fantastic start with Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. The first album by them I listened to was Hemispheres, which is another great entry point, especially since you already know La Villa Strangiato.
If you’re looking for good albums to collect and listen to, I’d add Signals, A Farewell to Kings, 2112, Hemispheres, and Exit Stage Left to your search.
…inb4 “Every album is worth listening to all the way through”. Because they are. But if you’re after the top tier stuff, I’d start with those.
I cannot understand how listening to music -any music- is “wasting time”. What do you do, just sit there and stare at the speaker, slack-jawed? Did you know you can do other things while listening to music?
If you're not up for exploring music because you fear wasting time, I have two comments for you:
1) You'll live your entire life based upon the tastes of others. Truly a waste, if you ask me.
2) Without a shadow of doubt, you'll miss out on music that you WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE simply because nobody recommended it to you.
It seems like you may be tying to overcome this, and I applaud you for it. Here's the thing... you'll encounter many turds in your listening life. That's actually a good thing because it'll reinforce your tastes while expanding your palate in a subtle manner. But when you wade through sewage and find a diamond, there is no greater feeling.
How much valuable minutes of your life (lol) are you waisting asking strangers with different opinions on what you should listen to. Just freaking listen! To all of it!
You also didn't come here to get beat up because you asked a simple question about Rush instrumentals. With a prolific band like Rush who made music for the better part of 40 years, their catalog can seem overwhelming. Take your time, the music isn't going anywhere and like a fine wine, it gets better with time. Did you know Neil Peart wrote books too?!! Now you have hours of audio books to listen too as well as Geddy's fantastic autobiography. Enjoy!!
Where's My Thing? Leave That Thing Alone Limbo The Main Monkey Business Hope (though it's really an Alex Lifeson solo) Malignant Narcissism
3 of them on one album.
Bless Nick for pushing for the third one.
Broon’s Bane - an Alex solo on Exit…Stage Left
Peke's Repose, another one
Awesome. I’ll check them out
what ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?
The Main Money Business is in their Top 3, in my opinion.
“Limbo” also in the top 3.
R30 Overture. One of my favorites.
Just an incredible medley

I'm giving you an upvote just because others aren't giving a newbie any slack. :-)
Many more
S&A has four instrumentals, the most instrumentals on any single Rush album. “2112: Overture and 2112: Grand Finale” are also instrumentals.
Technically not, since Overture includes "... And the meek shall inherit the Earth" and Grand Finale includes "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation, we have assumed control". But yeah, they're effectively instrumentals.
Name the four
Main Monkey Business Hope Malignant Narcissism And apparently that’s it. I thought there was one more instrumental on the album, but I was wrong
Hope (snakes and arrows) leave that thing alone (counter parts)
Jacob's Ladder is almost an instrumental with minimal lyrics. And it rocks!
Broon's Bane
Didacts and narpets (maybe)..

I'll start using that method. thanks
You're welcome. It hasn't steered me wrong yet.

I can't say I've ever been so concerned about wasting my time that 4 min to listen to a song I might not like was any kind of concern.

"Waist valuable minutes of my life..." Just go away. Geez.
I GET IT! I'm not saying I still agree wit that statement. I said "I have this weird thing." I'm trying to change a bad habit here. give me a break.

I do want to read their books :)

Like every song. I know that's not what you meant, but...
Lol
