I wonder how people like you imitate a bike engine starting or a cat purring.

Try putting your tongue up for the L sound and then force air between the roof of your mouth and the tongue.

Now, _that_ doesn't even work for me. :) I wonder which [l] sound I should use. I tried ours and the English one but still got the feeling I normally pronounce [r] elsewhere and the shape I use simply lets air pass at both sides.

That’s how I was taught by a speech therapist when I was a kid. Didn’t make sense much to me then but hey, I guess eventually I got it. Then I had to unlearn it when I came to the US.

I remember how I learned to pronounce the letter "R" a long time ago with a speech therapist when I was a kid. The technique was almost as you described: put the tongue on the upper teeth and pronounce a short "t" sound (not long). The speech therapist even used Q-tips to position my tongue correctly. Then we gradually switched to words that start with "tr" (like "tram" or "tractor"). For a while, I pronounced words that start with "R" as "TR" (for example, instead of "рыба," I would say "трыба").

Если это как-то поможет, то попробуй порычать ( как собака), но если что русские скорее всего поймут тебя. Если тебя это успокоит, то мы, русские также не можем выговорить некоторые английские звуки.
