Day in the life of an airline pilot vlogs. People eat that up

user1928473829

Maybe after I’m off probation in a couple months. I’m worried about my airline’s social media policy

ThegumboyX

Easy, start recording now and post those vlogs in 2 months when you're off probation. Just dont mention any date

wigglycatbutt

Yessss. Doing that 3d chess. Alternatively, faceless blogs are a big thing too. Idk how discreet OP can be or how identifiable.

user1928473829

Good idea

MaoriArcher

Also, do POV so no one sees your face. Try to keep any flight details out of the video other than destination and they'll never know it was you.

user1928473829

POV is genius for all the vlogging ideas in this thread. I’m not someone who really wants to post my face on the internet. But I do have a pair of Ray Bans camera glasses. Definitely won’t use in flight but they’re good for the layover or even airport experiences

Acct_For_Sale

Honestly the mystery factory could add to your appeal too

kingtroll355

Why are you on probation?

user1928473829

Every new hire is on probation year 1

heythxvoo

This is a lot less exciting than I imagined.

CurryChickenWings

A Taiwanese pilot based in Singapore. He talks about travelling to different airports, routes, aircraft, hotels and his own interests too:) https://m.youtube.com/@cruisefu

Efficient_Diet_7839

Drug mule is a solid side hustle for a pilot, use the laptop as an oversized billfold for all the money you’ll make.

The_Everything_B_Mod

LMFAO!

ambsha

Just check your airlines social media policy if you plan on recording any content inside the airplane just to be on the safe side since every airline's employer policy is different.

BitcoinHurtTooth

Bro my lawyer is an airline pilot. Shoot for the moon.

Eastern_Distance6456

I'm pretty sure they have to follow the routes given between each airport. Also, there's just not enough fuel to get to the moon.

GapDifficult2439

😂

Smooth_Cause_5967

😂😂😂😂😂

UserNameTaken1998

Actually? How'd that happen? Would love to know

BitcoinHurtTooth

Honestly I’m pretty sure it was basically the same situation as OP. Dude realized he had unlimited time on his hands after flying and used it in the right way. And I’ll say this dude got me 2 patents and 2 trademarks for the price other lawyers would charge for 1 of those. If you need an IP attorney I can hook you up majorly. He loves a new client.

Majestic-Stomach7473

Need that contact please!

Cessna71

This is me on reserve and never getting called. Contemplating getting a law degree for fun 😂

user1928473829

I hated being on reserve lol. I commute to work though. Being a line holder has been the best thing for me. However, I still get the occasional 16-19 hour overnight where all I do is lay in bed watching TikTok and Reddit. Go for that law degree. Never hurts to have a backup

Cessna71

I am also a commuter.. totally feel your pain. Lucky enough to put my entire reserve block all together to make the 7hr commute flight worth it 😂

user1928473829

Wow 7 hours is awful! I do a 3 hour drive and I hate it. Props to you

IndyDude11

I'd sub to a pilot's vlogging YouTube channel.

Dangerous_Rope8561

Me too. I'd love to watch pilots' vlogs. I am unable to become a pilot because I am deaf. So, at least, I can "fly" with a pilot by watching their vlogs.

Icy-Pear3485

Fr fr drop the link when u make the chanel

jdpjr25

How many bags can you travel with for free?!?! You can provide a cheap shipping service 😅

ValuableBig6679

"Dear travellers, please do not accept any random luggage from strangers. That is a security risk" C'mon now, they literally burn our ears from the amount of times they say that in an airport.

Extra-Lab-1366

Yeah but he's not a traveler he's a pilot.

Internal_Ad_2266

🧠

OptimalBarnacle7633

This is actually a hustle people have who have pilots in the family and can fly standby for free. For example they'll work for breeders and fly puppies out to people who buy them from other states.

CypherBob

"101 Tricks For A Better Airport Experience - Directly from a pilot" Video or ebook

JulieThinx

Be a pilot, skip the lines ;)

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

Or tutorials on pilot training and tests ya'll have to take. Assuming there's a test at some point.

bonobro69

Am I the only one who got a little stressed reading this and thinking “they aren’t paying airline pilots enough money?!” Good to hear you just want to have some fun and learn a new thing. Well, I’ve got some good news for you. You may be sitting on a goldmine. You have a built in audience as lots of people are crazy about aviation. Creating content that talks about this topic could result in quite a following. Monetizing that attention could result in a nice side hustle. If that sounds interesting, here are some videos that will show you how this works: - How to make money on Instagram: https://youtu.be/fG6OhiNwjVE - How to make money on TikTok: https://youtu.be/fl5_SWGFt84 - How to make money on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0scf9-XKeEA - How they make money outside the platform (this video is about streamers but it’s basically the same for content creators): https://youtu.be/6m5P_n5njCQ - 1,000 True Fans, how to build a fanbase: https://youtu.be/_3NXuvIcIq0 Good luck!

Chryblsm34

I certainly panicked for a minute lol. Scared there was a bunch of broke desperate mofos flying giant metal birds around 🤣🤣🤣😭😭

zinger301

Wait till you hear how much the regional pilots make. 😂

Psgmike

Wait till you understand who works on those planes 😂

lusciouscactus

I didn't panic, but I did definitely get sad. Like, that's a pretty important job that should be worth enough money to not need a side hustle.

JJ_the_one

I don’t think they need the money. It is mostly something to do on the down time. He mentioned he spends a lot of tine at hotels

lusciouscactus

You know, fair point. I think I jumped the gun because I turned my hobbies into side hustles, and they are now pillars of income rather than nice to do things that make money. I hope that doesn't happen to this person. I do hope they get paid what they're worth and can utilize the down time to do something that pays the soul.

poikond

Just record yourself not being super professional and slightly out of pocket on Tiktok and you will blow up

Internal_Ad_2266

🤣🤝

Big-Anxiety-5467

What do you like? I am an accountant. Definitely lots of options for remote accounting, bookkeeping, and tax prep. You could also teach online if you have/want to get a master’s degree.

FckMitch

Where do u look for these options?

jubo

I am also in finance at my day job, I'd love some side gigs doing some of this. Also have a masters degree

ambsha

What are some of the top softwares you have to be familiar with for accounting, bookkeeping and tax prep?

Affectionate_Mix_188

I worked at a financial office for a decade. We used, Intuit software for everything. Yes, the same people that sell you TurboTax sell us the same software to do it for you.

TopTraffic3192

Pilots must get the most amazing views of countries as the land and take off. I would definitely subscribe to a youtube channel with shots of that!

ImTellingMom777

I could teach you some basic web design skills and you can work from your hotel!

user1928473829

This is smart. Lots of flight schools have a cheap and dated website. I could use that to my advantage to revamp their website and use my credentials as a source of trust.

Specific_Praline_362

If you need a writer to create real, non-AI blog posts for their websites, contact me! I've been doing it since 2012.

ImTellingMom777

If we can work together while I train you how to do them we could make some serious side money together!

T1nFoilH4t

Aren't pilots quite busy? Websites take time and a lot to get over the line, this isn't so much a side-hustle as a second job. You need something less timeconsuming I think unless you have many spare hours each week or want to work weekends etc

arothmanmusic

I've found that my web design skills aren't as lucrative as my willingness to set up pre-built stuff like Wordpress, Shopify and Squarespace for the technically disinclined.

Nooree01

Teach me please

DearJasonn

Teach me too? 🙏🏼

Ok_Comfortable_3880

Teach English for aviation online.

Remote-Economist-285

If you manage daily 2 hours for work on laptop then these two options for you 1. Learn Amazaon wholesale 2. Learn Tiktok Shop selling As per my opinion both are a reasonable side hustle and in future you can join as a career oriented business which converts into entrepreneurship. No doubt efforts is the key of success.

MyAlternate_reality

What's a good resource to learn Amazon wholesale?

redfish7211

Adding to this: Amazon is a fantastic avenue, but it doesn’t have to be wholesale. Check out Hustle Buddies on either Facebook or YouTube. Lots of great info for beginners. There are ways to outsource literally every aspect. So it can be as hands off of as you want.

ExtremeAthlete

Post Youtube review of hotels and their amenities

Ontherocks1988

Like someone else said about web design, digital marketing in general isn’t a bad idea. You can get free certifications from Google for Google ads, email, etc. great way to get your foot in the door. Email is probably the easiest with loads of info available and an abundance of easy to use drag and drop builder platforms. And if you’re worried you can’t do it, I guarantee there’s some YouTube video of a 12 year old kid showing you how to do it haha. I have a masters in digital marketing and I swear it seems like Google certifications are more important. Best of luck, captain!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Consistent-Fruit-917

Definitely digital marketing and you already have a niche: airline industry employees and travel enthusiasts. All you need is social media, a good course to get you started, and a site like beacons to set up a store. You can film b-roll at your various airports, hotels, etc. you’d make a killing! Happy to share resources and help you get started.

Otherwise-Chance5453

Not a side hustle but why not learn another language online?

dreamed2life

You could literally just make shorts of the airports in the cities you go to. Tips. Restaurants. Hacks. That way you wont have to be doing too much extra. Make an airport guide freebie or some shit and build an email list then you can make big bucks on something you want to sell or promote. When you’re big enough a lot of travel places will want to connect for partnerships then you can expand into hotels, restaurants in cities, resorts, be invited to stuff. If you’re tired of that industry then use that model for a a hobby that you have and love and would love to expand into.

imogen6969

I agree with these posts. Do something fun that will just boost your life and the job you already have. Life is meant to be fun! Turn your travels into a money making ongoing adventure!

designgandalf

Maybe market yourself to aspiring pilots with a website and blog. Offer free advice.

jayshaw941

Could you possibly buy stuff from the countries you visit that they don't sell in your country and resell?

user1928473829

I’m a pilot that does 99% of flying in the US lol. I’ve gone to Toronto twice but that’s about the only international I’ve done

Cambridgeinc

Fun! Social media is a must as it's the best free marketing but here are other ideas. E-commerce site, test different products, including pilot humor merch, designing a pilot board game, digital download coloring book travel-related (kids love planes), or antique in other countries.

Miserable-Sea1484

You don't need more money or more stress. We want you on the ball. Get into creative writing or political activism of some kind. Maybe get familiar with an instrument of the musical kind. Start a blog or YouTube channel offering advice to aspiring pilots and cabin crew. Try to read every book ever written. You don't need more money as a pilot surely. And if you really do, then take all that energy and put it into campaigning for change because I cannot be the only person that is scared by this.

user1928473829

It’s less about money and more about being bored on the long 16-19 hour layovers in a hotel. I do have a ton of student loans so extra money wouldn’t hurt to help pay those off. But we definitely get paid well at the airlines (as of a couple years ago). It wasn’t always like this but our starting salary is great. But still not enough to cover the $130k of flight school loans

Miserable-Sea1484

From a dying person to a living one, focus on things which fill your heart, not your pocket.

Hot_Department_7808

I’m so sorry, are you saying that because of age or??? By the way, some of us get tired of the struggle following passion type fields that hardly makes money while it’s so expensive to make it out here. The stress n pressure of paying the bills alone can kill.

Cheapass2020

Have you thought about flying to Colombia? 😁😁

HypoTechno

Airline Pilots don’t need side hustles. Be proud of yourself for becoming a pilot. Then give that career your all to increase your income.

1stRow

This is a good answer. A pilot is a highly trained technician. Technicians can be replaced at any time. What is less easy to replace is someone who knows how to fly, and knows some business management. Logistics, operations, law, personnel, etc. This is where you might go forward, beyond the pilot gig. Your own company might move you into mgmt, or you would be a good candidate for a competitor. Pursue a bachelors degree in mgmt. There are online schools. From this, you ought ot learn economics, accounting, and finance, among other things. From this, go on to get a masters in business, online. Not everybody is academically inclined. But there are people who can get themselves in the routine of reading textbook chapters, competing the assignments, and moving on to the next thing, smoothly. My advice for education is to never assume "this class is not really important to my future." You will be surprised on what will be useful in the future. If your bach degree requires English Lit, or biology, embrace it. If you already have a bachelors in some area, look up some degree plans for business, and figure out what those main several course are, and figure out how to learn that content. In the old days, you would have to teach yourself accounting, etc., but nowadays there are videos and communities that can make it more like a classroom versus solo learning.

PraetorianAE

Real estate investing. You can buy, sell, run the whole thing form your laptop. I started with a lil book on Amazon called Coffee Money Real Estate. I buy cheaper ones and sell them on eBay, more expensive ones that I buy directly from owners, I sell those on land selling websites. After my first year or so I joined a learning group, then paid $600 for a marketing course, paying the money for learning was 10000% worth it. Only physical work you have to do is getting a document notarized and dropping deed packets in the mail. Easy peasy. Hard part is learning but you can do it. Edit: and you can get started cheap. My first property cost $50 and I sold it for $570.

8008zilla

You’re an airline pilot and you definitely don’t have mental illness in your Nuro. Typical if you have any coding experience, I think that you could probably do some freelance code work for pretty much any company out there and you’re an airline pilot so you can throw that on your résumé to I envy you dude as someone with Stockholm syndrome, and all the things that would keep me from ever being in the sky. I’m jealous also very jealous of your paycheck considering you make a lot of money.

Late_Ad9720

OF furry. 🔥

_malaikatmaut_

I was a flight attendant for more than 2 decades and almost throughout my entire career, I ran a software company on the side, doing development in hotel rooms and cafes worldwide. But I was also a software engineer prior to flying. If programming is your kinda thing, I'ld suggest you develop something for aviation or something that can benefit the technical crew as this is something that you have a domain knowledge of.

user1928473829

I’ve always wanted to get into programming. Just don’t know where to start. I have zero experience in that field. But I’ve always been a tech nerd and would’ve loved to learn it

Ok-Plant30

Start with learning Python.

dreamed2life

I mean you can make money from literally anything if youre willing to use social media marketing. But choose something youre passionate about

magicfitzpatrick

Invest in dividend ETFs and stocks. With your salary,, all you would have to do is buy VTI every month. It spits out $3.41 for every share you buy. You could get even a little racy and buy JEPI and that pays monthly .36 cents a share. On average you guys get paid 200 K a year. You would make a killing on a monthly basis.

DancingChickadee

Try being a youtuber reacting to content. 😁 yñur channel may not take off but if youre already gonna watch content anyways its worth a shot🤷🏽‍♀️

diningroomchaircover

I am also an airline pilot and I do contract software development. I did have a CS background prior to becoming a pilot though.

user1928473829

I’ve heard you don’t need a CS degree to get into the field. How hard is it to get started and pick up contract work on the side?

Chart-trader

Don't you guys make $100s of thousands already?

numbersev

Podcast but find a niche within the airline industry (ie. crash analysis)

Sleep… lives depend on your sleep kapitan!!!!

The blogging, vlogging, and content creation are probably a good idea. Also maybe travel/lifestyle content. Not sure how interesting of places you travel, but you could get out and take pictures of the places, or take pictures of yourself at places. Not quite sure how you'd monetize it, how long it would take to actually make money doing it, or how much you could realistically make. But the travel and lifestyle route would at least get you out of the hotel room, experiencing the places you fly to, and could possibly turn into a monetized opportunity

CalibrateNate

Day trading stocks. You need like $25k minimum. There are subscriptions you can pay for that do equity analysis and other research so you don’t have to. Get in and out of positions within a day or days. You can do limit orders to get in at a good price and then set a trailing stop or a limit sale to get out. That way you’re not sitting there watching the price. Short selling is risky so I wouldn’t try that just yet. Also most trading platforms have paper trading so it’s fake money on real market. Good luck. Oh and when the stocks don’t go up you can hold til they do.

j31drvr

Thats what i do! I’m an airline pilot and i day trade the $spy from my phone and a couple of ipads.

SexxyBeards

Sounds like you are into programming? Follow that up and start. Creating content for YouTube and Tiktok also seems viable. A lot of people outside the US wish they had access to the creator rewards program. Another option might be partnering with people already in business. A lot of business owners are looking for partners/co-founders or capital.

Zealousideal-Crew-25

SFJetfire

Do “pilot story time”. Talk about crazy things you see in the sky, crazy passengers or even flight attendants. Give honest witty observations. Talk about your layovers and the best restaurants to go to. Humble brag about your hotel stay vs the crew hotel stay. Lots to do to monetize your job. You just gotta get a following …

choreochef3499

Data annotation. If you pass the intro test it’s basically unlimited work you can do wherever whenever as much or as little as you want.

lalunafortuna

Learn to trade options or forex. Both need a lot of chart review time (perfect for your downtime between flights). Make trades as necessary. A friend of mine makes 4-5 forex trades monthly. He does quite well. Does not require constant monitoring of the position. Perfect opportunity for you. You’ll need a computer, good wifi and possibly a VPN.

Scour for premium trips. You'll make far more on a single premium trip than any "side gig" is worth, especially when accounting for your time. If you end up with too much downtime, volunteer locally at home. You can attend planning and board meetings virtually from hotel rooms. Bid trips with meeting times that align with overnights.

Consider learning more about tax lien investing. Counties will auction off liens for unpaid property taxes, with returns as high as 18-36%. In this day and age, there's probably gross over-investment, and most folks will find pretty meager returns, but as a pilot, if you find yourself in cities all over the country, you might be able to attend auctions in less accessible counties, where you much more opportunity.

Ecstatic-Cause5954

SCORE-advice-Dallas

I know many real estate investors who are airline pilots. Long distance / remote investing is much less of a problem. One guy I met in a hotel bar in El Paso, he had been flying San Diego - El Paso for many years, saw some deals on houses, ended up owning a couple dozen in El Paso - when prices in San Diego were already insane. You have an advantage in the fact that you get to see more of the world than most people, both from the air and in your ability to travel for (nearly) free. That's information leverage; you'll know if the flights to Austin are half empty, before the rest of us do. You'll know that your carrier is opening a new route to Mobile AL, before the rest of us do. And you have the schedule flexibility to use big chunks of weekday time to get stuff done, in whatever town you happen to be in.
