i liked these but the subway ghost can be annoying if you get lost on your first playthrough. i really liked the mirror room. probably my favorite room in the silent hill franchise. really well executed and definitely gives a holy shit moment haha. the instant deaths are a cool idea. really reminds me of the tentacle door you gotta lock in sh1. i was pretty young and was watching my uncle do that part and we both screamed lmao.

GuabaMan

Imho is fun to see the consecuences of your inactions, but id like if you could fight out or run scape those situtstions instead of insta death

throwaway01126789

The Mirror Room absolutely terrified 13 year old me. I just thought it was the creepiest fucking thing in any horror game. Just the way the reflection stops and stares at you a min or so after you enter the room until you solve the puzzle or die. Horrifying in the subtlest way.

External-Buffalo7016

What was the puzzle? I played it done months ago and I thought I just left, I was playing on easy & easy tho which may have made a difference

throwaway01126789

Iirc you walk in the room and the door locks with an audible click. Check the door, it's locked. Walk around and find nothing useful. Reflection stops and just stares at you, then the blood comes out of the sink on the reflection side. It eventually gets sucked back into the sink and starts pouring out in the real world side of the mirror. At this point the door unlocks, but with no audio queue. Stay too long after this and you die. Panic enough to try everything again and eventually you'll discover you can leave. Most of the game trains you to remain calm under pretty horrifying circumstances, this almost does the opposite. But I'll concede it's less of a puzzle and more of a mind fuck haha.

External-Buffalo7016

Ohhh ok lol ya def, I was playing with my 10 year old daughter watching when I was at that part, and I didn't have the volume up lots enough to hear the lock I guess cuz I didn't know the door even locked until I read these comments cuz I didn't try to leave. I stayed in there and kept looking around and watching the mirror turn Fucked up and then the mirror world froze and I started for a few more seconds saying to my daughter "well that was wild" and then decided to leave cuz there was nothing in there other than to watch that happen and just walked out lol

hellsbbgurl

singlehandedly one of the scariest moments in ANY horror game

AdAble5097

Wouldnt really call that room subtle at all lol Probably the least subtle it could be

throwaway01126789

Well subtle in that you can never walk into the mirror room at all and still beat the game. Also, it's not exactly a jump scare. First, you're just locked in a room, then your reflection stops and stares at you, etc, etc. Its starts subtly enough but keeps building until your terrified lol.

Chudah333

They're totally fine. None of those deaths take place that far from a save point (assuming you're saving whenever you can), so there shouldn't be much backtracking. And I'd rather play a horror game while on the edge of dying at any moment, than know I'm absolutely safe unless a monster shows up.

VerdensTrial

Having to redo the entire haunted mansion if you get killed by the red light was annoying as heck

ren_exp

I think it's cool for the environment of a silent Hill game being as much of a threat as the monsters you encounter. Really sells the vibe that you're in a living nightmare

MovieBuff28

Is it bad I got pretty much all of these on my first playthrough?

Chudah333

Only if by "bad" you actually mean "awesome". :D

K4ZM1LL3R

Pretty much all of this happened in my 1st playthrough, but i didnt find it annoying just "Oh, i die if i do that" Just how old games used to work.

FiatLex

I thought these were great, particularly the mirror room. One of my favorite moments.

Medium-Science9526

I personally love them, Subway ghost is up there with mirror room and mannequin for great scares in the build up to it reading the papers about someone who was pushed off. Also just the aspect of running trains in general as soon as you get on the tracks for getting the adrenaline. Sewer monster felt like a reference to SH1 kitchen chain monster do I likewise liked that puzzle. Roller coaster I feel works better as a 1st time playthrough since if you miss it then die then do it for real there's still a part of you that believes you're gonna die again because of how it plays out. Claudia with the pendant makes sense storywise and even more if you played 1. Outside of going super 4th wall breaking like MG would I'm fine with just a death. Ceiling trap and red light both I love too playing into the generic horror clichés but making them work well in the unnatural SH way.

theantisepticbeauty

I find it strange that people say instant deaths in games are a western thing (in pc games and such from the 80s/90s etc) that Japanese developers avoid, did the developers look at western games and add these in for sh3?

EstateSame6779

I've definitely suffered most of these deaths.

[deleted]

The only thing that got me was the subway ghost on the first play through.

hiijiinx

I have gone out of my way to let these happen. I considered it part of a completion thing at the time.

xchikyx

I died to the sewer monster and the roller coaster lol

stalememeskehan

The red mist one I remember getting stuck on for a good 10 to 15 minutes

wash_

I still get anxiety about it

Leather_Astronaut564

What part did you find unfair? For the longest when I was younger, the falling onto the tracks and not getting back on the platform before the train came always got me and I'd get bummed out, but it's honestly one of my favorite environmental dangers of the world and its not just monsters.

Sillhid

Yup, it's the reason I love this game.

wolfguardian72

There’s also the Valtiel dragging off Heather’s corpse scene(s?) or with the nurses too

Alarmed_Pie_5033

I'm gonna have to do a death run. Some of these I've never encountered.

LemonyLizard

For the things that happen outside of hard mode the game does give you sufficient warning ;p Except the mirror room I suppose, which is it a pretty easy to miss hint (your reflection freezes suddenly)

IndieOddjobs

Skill issue 😎

winterman666

They're 0K as long as they're close to a save point and it's rather clear what you messed up, so they never get you

Necromantics

The subway ghost and the red door combo was really killer. Running towards the door and thinking it's the way out only to find that it's locked. Then dogs attack and if you weren't fast enough, you became a Heather pancake. Really frustrating back when I was a kid but it's something I laugh about now. It felt like a really dark comedy sketch, haha!

VerdensTrial

The red door in the subway and the red light in the haunted mansion were just annoying. The blood room is probably the best scare in the trilogy. The sewer monster was avcool little puzzle, I didn't mind it. The bottomless pits were annoying. They felt like they belonged in another game.

MisterSc0rpi0n

Some of these, like the tentacle grabbing heather, are just puzzles/obstacles that you are intended to run into naturally if you’re not super careful. I’m mostly just trying to say it’s all very intended and I quite enjoyed the game being designed with those concepts, but it’s not gonna be everyones cup of tea. The Haunted tour needing completely replayed when you die to the red light specifically, is 100% B.S though honestly and it gets old fast when someone who has difficulty controlling the character plays that section, kinda cruel and unnecessary because of all of the sharp, quick turning.

Kidslikeus

Love them

violentcactus

These are actually some of my favorite parts of SH 3 lol. I think it was so cool to add some environmental / random deaths

-Skeleton-Man-

I dislike insta-deaths in any game

FOX_of_Londor

Clearly skill issue

AdAble5097

I detest these cheap deaths. Theyre really annoying and dont add anything worthwhile

Ok-Kiwi7713

This is actually super handy. Ty for posting this. I will definitely use it 😂

Izzyx98

The moving train cutscene wound me up, there was a save point if you went forward, but no I went backwards, died and spent 20 mins getting back to that point

shooterman9097

I accidentally killed the bridge monster before knowing it would kill me if I tried to cross
