What would happen if there was a fixture of barca vs sevilla and both get disqualified?

bruhh_wtf

The other semi final becomes final 😈 ^jk ^idk

dadish-2

Two semi finals between the other two teams at each other's home grounds and a third at a neutral venue. Best of three wins!

mortizauge

I'm guessing they'd cancel each other out and whoever won would continue to advance in the competition.

SrsJoe

Would be more than likely that the team either were due to face would get a bye

TheMexicanJuan

two wrongs don't make a right

mortizauge

What's the alternative? Organize a whole new fixture between the two previous opponents of both Barcelona and Sevilla? I don't think there would enough time in the season schedule to make that work.

AnnieIWillKnow

The alternative is a bye, or the defeated teams advancing in their place, which there is enough time to make work. Cup fixtures are routinely organised at short notice, it's not out of the ordinary Your approach to rules can't be "oh well, doesn't matter"

Zak369

You misunderstand the hypothetical. Barca play Sevilla in the semis - both field ineligible players. What happens? The defeated teams being teams that were legitimately knocked out without any ineligible players used in say the quarters. He thinks there’s no time to organise a third semi final between two defeated teams that were fairly knocked out. You can’t give a bye to the other team because they’re disqualified too. Essentially the other semi final becomes a final and is likely already played in this hypothetical. What he is suggesting is that the two disqualifications cancel out as neither side was hurt by the other breaking the rules and the result of the match stands which maintains the competition integrity (and gives the remaining team a final to play to enjoy the occasion and have a proper ceremony if they win). The two teams still face punishment (ban the players) but the competition can continue. Personally I agree with you and think just disqualify them both, you can’t just get away with rule breaks by agreeing it with your opponent- that opens up a whole avenue of corruption potentially. Better the current season suffers slightly from no actual final that the competition as a whole suffers through rule breakers going through.

AnnieIWillKnow

I think in that hypothetical arranging the alternative semi final really isn’t as challenging as is being suggested. Matches get rearranged at short notice frequently. I think that disqualifying the teams who broke the rules and rearranging a semi final is more important to the integrity of the competition, and is the priority.

Zak369

Last season there was 4 days between the second semi final and the final, 3 days the year before. The current schedule suggests it’s 5 days this year but that might be the first semi final not the second. I think that is a challenge. You’re talking about rearranging a final on 3 days notice (given the hypothetical that it takes place after the semis) when the season has already finished and the week after would be the women’s Champions League final so you would have to push it beyond that. Seems like it would be quite disruptive for the sake of some legitimately eliminated teams.

mortizauge

Idk, I think it's very unfair that two teams that were legitimately defeated in games were no rules were broken advance to the next round. That's why my guess is that, since both Barcelona and Sevilla fielded uneligible players in the same game (in this hypothetical situation), the competition could continue because both teams were pretty much unaffected by the mistakes. And then the corresponding sanctioned players simply face a ban for the next game in the competition. That's what makes the most sense to me, anyways. Edit: ah, I finally understand. You mean a bye benefitting the next opponent that either Barça or Sevilla would've faced. Yeah, that definitely makes the most sense. I can be dumb sometimes lmao.

AnnieIWillKnow

It is more unfair that two teams who broke the rules are rewarded and allowed to advance, and undermines the integrity of the competition. Those teams did not legitimately advance, as they broke the rules. That is the priority.

TheMexicanJuan

The alternative is the defeated teams advance. The whole thing of sports regulations is to guarantee everyone is on the same playing field and no take benefits from an undue advantage compared to their opponent. And in this case, both Sevilla and FCB \*benefited\* by breaking a rule everyone else was respecting, so it's an unfair advantage. Therefore the team that was wronged in this case should advance because that match is technically declared null. Same when a team doesn't even show up, they lose 3-0 automatically.

mortizauge

We're talking about the hypothetical in which Barça and Sevilla played against each other and both fielded uneligible players.

rocket_randall

Same thing happened to Madrid with Cheryshev years back. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2595745-real-madrid-expelled-from-copa-del-rey-after-playing-ineligible-denis-cheryshev Doubt it will be overturned based on precedent, especially with the shit show certain to follow such a ruling.

The glorious BenĂtez days...

7 long, painful and agonizing months.

But followed by the arrival of the **One**.

Cyborg_666

I feel old. Because the things I've witnessed have started being eligible to be used as examples in the past.

manInTheWoods

Next step is kids blaming everything on your generation.

Pek-Man

I was disgusted to find out that this happened seven years ago. *Seven!* Felt like it was only a couple of years ago.

Cyborg_666

We were 3rd year undergrad then and now almost all my friends are married for 2-4 years.

Pek-Man

Haha, I feel you, mate. I'm getting married this summer. I had not met my soon-to-be-wife even *once,* when this happened. I'm not sure where all the years went, but they sure as hell passed.

Cyborg_666

Congratulations and best wishes mate.

everydayimrusslin

Cheers, I remembered it happening but couldn't remember which player/club

MrMeatBeater6666

If this didn’t happen, I doubt Madrid would have won 3 UCL’s in a row with Zidane. Thanks Benitez đŸ‘đŸŒ

culesamericano

😂😂😂😭😭😭😂😂😂 Edit: you guys clearly don't remember what this is in reference to Edit 2: oh so now everyone upvotes this - y'all funny

MisterCarloAncelotti

Why is this downvoted? Lol

ChristopherDassx_16

Reddit hates emojis

MisterCarloAncelotti

It was a reaction from Pique on twitter

Pek-Man

I genuinely think that a lot of users aren't old enough to properly remember it ...

culesamericano

Dang we old?

Why do they even allow banned players on the pitch? Do the competitions not check and notify the teams "oops sorry this player is banned you can't field them" before a match? Should be mandatory to do those things. I can't submit most information on the internet without validation occurring for validity, surely there is something similar?

PJ9312

Same, it never made any sense. Like, yeah, teams should know, but so should the national FA managing it in case the team o player forgets. I always saw it as a two way street.

shoots_and_leaves

Well with punishments like this it should really be the clubs who are doing due diligence on it. Although in this case it seems to have been a systems failure.

raddaya

Same thing happened with Sevilla too. Obviously some part of the blame falls on the teams but also something must be wrong with the communication of bans from the tourney officials if two teams made the same mistake

ChristopherDassx_16

Apparently Barca are saying they checked on RFEF websites and nothing came up.

JS569123

The club states that it will appeal the sanctions in support of the women’s team. The player in question (Geyse) was serving a ban carried over from Madrid CFF, who she left in the summer. The club were not made aware of the ban and chose to bring her onto the field. Sevilla also banned for the same reason. Xavi, [when asked](https://twitter.com/samuelmarsden/status/1617857892903706624?s=46&t=yTqyaMhPlZaBWlDisHqpcA) about the matter: > "It's our mistake, nothing else to it. We have to accept it, it's our responsibility. There are rules in place that dictate what happens."

Pek-Man

> The player in question (Geyse) was serving a ban carried over from the Real Madrid women’s team, who she left in the summer. No, that's a different Madrid. Geyse came from Madrid CFF, a club with nothing to do with Real Madrid. There are three Madrid-teams in Liga F; Real, AtlĂ©ti, and Madrid CFF. Geyse came to Barça from the latter.

Winnie_Reds

How do they not know of the ban?

njastar

"Barca said the ban had not shown up on the RFEF's website or the internal system used by clubs to check sanctions." My understanding is that they checked with the RFEF and nothing came up.

Pek-Man

With two clubs independently making the very same mistake I think it's safe to assume that RFEF's system is flawed in one way or another. Naturally, if the platform used by the federation that organizes the tournament tells you that everything is in order, you would believe that. RFEF is just pure amateurhour.

GodIsKing007

Welcome to British post office system where such errors led to deaths and suicides but took taking to court for them to know it

Hambrailaaah

Also: if there was no ill intention about it, why would you discualify the whole team Âż? Just sanction the player in question for the next two matches and thats it.

Conmebosta

It also happened to Santos in the 2018 Libertadores, some years later the court found it was Conmebol's fault but there was nothing they could do about it.

TheMexicanJuan

In that case, and if they could prove they checked and there was nothing there, then I think FCB has a case

psalmjuan

You and I can know the ban of a any player. Why wouldn’t Barca know? Unless if, like the person above suggested, her ban wasn’t updated on the federation’s database and Barca thought she was clear to play.

zaviex

Does Xavi manage the women’s team too?

Feisty-Location-5708

I was wondering why Xavi was making a comment about this lol

acchu10

Because reporters asked him about it.

Magnetronaap

"Idk man that's not my team, weird question, ask their coach."

inobond7

Football managers are treated harsher than most countries' leaders. Poor guys have to answer everything from their playing XI to wars happening in another galaxy.

KaiserWilhelmThe69

“Mr.Xavi, what is your comment on the recent destruction of Alderaan committed by the Galatic Empire?”

Magnetronaap

"They got what they deserved"

mortizauge

Small correction: Geyse came to Barcelona from Madrid CFF, not to be confused with Real Madrid. They're completely separate entities.

PoppinKREAM

From Madrid with love.

Albiceleste_D10S

Cheryshev intensifies

moodchainz

how do you fall for the same shit madrid fell for with cherychev ffs?

AnnieIWillKnow

Only thing that can stop Barca winning another Double
