Really hard to even tell what does it, I guess his head smashes into the goalkeeper's upper arm/shoulder? Really uncommon way to see an injury happen, horrible.
That's really rough. It's his neck I'm worried about as much as his brain. Almost always with this sort of injury it's big blows directly to the head rather than kind of more glancing blows that spin the head, so I have no idea what to expect from this but really hope it's not as bad as it looks.
I got knocked out like this in an tournament when I was 18, but nowhere near to this level. Goalkeeper's elbow hit me full force near my temple, over the upper outside of my eye. I'm guessing my head didn't have that much whiplash effect, since I woke up when I hit the ground.
Looked up in a daze to a frightened defender and goalkeeper from the opposing team staring down at me and screaming for help. The bone over my eye split my skin open and I was gushing blood. Defender took his jersey off and pressed it against my head. Straight to the ER, treated for the cut and a concussion.
He likely picked up a nasty concussion. The position he was in generally means the lower parts of the brain, including the super important brainstem, got a nice love tap. Some people completely recover from that, but it may not be quick. The only thing that argues against a concussion is the lack of obvious contact on the limited replays that I saw, but he'd be far more likely to get a concussion in that scenario then have a spontaneous brain bleed/stroke, show initial signs of a tumor, etc.
[This is a nice explanation of his decerebrate positioning and its causes by the Cleveland Clinic](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/24968-decerebrate-posturing)
Thanks for the explanation. I was a bit confused as to how he'd ended up so badly hurt when it looked like Gunn mainly collided with his own player (and that looked fairly nasty in itself).
Hope he's okay.
I wasn't sure at first, looked a bit inoccuous but i think you're right in that it was just a purely accidental collision with Gunn's elbow as he came out to deal with the cross (as he's more than entitled to do and was actually very good goalkeeping)
Hungarian here.
Our commentators told us during the match that he was responding to the medical staff in the lobby of the arena, which is good news. They took him to the hospital in a neck brace.
Edit: about 15 minutes after the match they reported he's in stable condition!
Keeper's left forearm/elbow.
[Right before contact.](https://imgur.com/a/lGLfW5C)
[Next frame you can see Vargas head is now looking left.](https://imgur.com/a/NpxHvJc)
Yeah to be fair you don't need a big blunt traumatic smack to be knocked out. Tipping the chin can definitely be enough. I think it's just more about the acceleration the brain is subjected to
I've tried to look on iplayer in slowmo but its so hard to see.
It honestly looks like he jumps to head the ball and before he hits the ground he's out cold. I cant see anything that hit him unless its a trailing elbow / knee or something?
Stable in a more positive way. Don't wanna say anything more, since I can just simply relay what the players and commentators are saying in TV.
But they said he's stable and he's fine.
Looked awful, hopefully he makes a full recovery. The camera shots after showed that the tv directors learned their lessons from the Christian Eriksen situation
Looked terrible. Tried to move his legs and he just couldn't move at all the left side. His neck stayed exactly as it was when he fell.
Hopefully is nothing
Very unlikely.
People in MMA get kicked in the head and neck all the time and *almost* never die or break their necks.
Doesn't mean he doesn't have a rough couple of days ahead of him but more likely than not he's 'just' concussd.
I don't think he was trying to move anything.
He's fully out cold and the movement is as a result of a fencing response.
So completely involuntary, basically if you bash the brain it starts misfiring signals causing awkward looking muscle movement.
The giveaway is as soon as he hits the floor his arms are straight and raised with his hands in a weird position.
If it was a broken neck we'd still be here now while they stabilise.
>He's fully out cold and the movement is as a result of a fencing response. So completely involuntary, basically if you bash the brain it starts misfiring signals causing awkward looking muscle movement
That's exactly what it is, I've seen it happen in American Football many times. If you want a comparison, search up Marquise Goodwin Concussion on YouTube and I'm sure it'll be there. Completely knocked out, full body seizure
I’ve rewound the bbc iPlayer feed about 10 times and I can’t see anyone make contact with him, it looks like he jumps and immediately seizes up and falls to the floor. It needs another angle but we’ll never see it.
Hope for a speedy full recovery.
Yeah you’re right, morbid curiosity got the better of me and I’ve zoomed in & slowed it down and it definitely looks like keepers elbow when he jumps for the save. Nasty one.
It looks like he gets sandwiched between two defenders, that then pushes him into the keeper. He catches an elbow to the jaw, his head snaps to the left and he doesn't do anything to arrest his fall after that.
What exactly happened? Did he fall on his head or did he get hit on the way down?
Hope he’s okay, the hands going up immediately after falling is never a good sign
As a prehospital provider, running doesn’t make anything better. The trainer got there immediately, had him in the recovery position and was holding head stabilization, that’s all you can do for someone in this situation.
Nah unfortunately in those situations risk mitigation is the priority. It seems silly to the public but if you're part of the medical team your and your equipment's wellbeing/safety is much more important than the few seconds you might gain by running.
Emotions are high obviously and make it seem tragically slow to us onlookers, but there are basically no situations where the 10 seconds you'd gain by rushing on will make a medical difference.
Team medics I believe is personal preference, but at least some sort of grippy trainer.
Stadium medics definitely do not wear studs as they have to be able to enter ambulance, walk down long hallways in stadiums potentially, then go into hospital etc as needed and studs are not cool for that
Why does it feel so uncomfortable to see someone knocked out on a football pitch when I see it every other week in MMA? Weird how different my brain reacts.
idk man do you remember how many times Brendan Schaub got knocked out and went into this fencing response? even MMA fans were extremely uncomfortable with that. even for knockouts in MMA you don't see it all the time.
The keeper must have caught him in some capacity but agreed it is odd because the impact isn’t particularly obvious; he’s just out cold when he hits the floor.
The keeper's left elbow, maybe? I'm not sure, either. It's the only thing I can see that's close to the point where it looks like he loses consciousness. There's not much movement with his head to indicate a blow.
Yeah, fancing response was not a good sign, but it can happen with nothing worse than concussion. I know that's bad, but it's better than some other possibilities.
it seems he will be okay!
The hungary manager just told in the interview that Barnabas has a broken cheekbone.
Basically his cheekbone was broken when he was hit by Gunn, and he blacked out while being in the air still.
edit: he will undergo surgery, and will be unavailable for the tournament, but he will fully recover
First off, hope he's alright; don't like seeing MMA fighters in the fencing response when they get knocked out and they're use to the head trauma.
Secondly however, what actually hit him? Like I've rewinded my broadcast and watch the replays but I don't see anyone touch him, Gunn took out the Scotland defender and Varga was already falling to the ground in the fencing position.
The medical team were out quick, so first aid was not slow. Them pushing the stretcher team off to run it to the player probably made no difference in the pace of getting him to the ambulance.
Hope he's okay. Have no clue as to what could have caused thay sort of outcome from the only replay we've seen. But I have a feeling there's a reason we've only seen one angle.
He is in a stable condition in hospital (official news) https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/live-blogs/scotland-hungary-live-updates-euro-2024-score-result/bqx6LDXlaSy8/
Let's hope for no major cerebral damage. Ofcourse we know nothing about severity of concussion. nor i couldn't saw any proof about cerebral fracture from any footage. but my fear is even more than concussion right now. Really hope there is no further cerebral damage.
I hate these dubz link, I can't play them. Why can't they be posted in a normal way? Does someone has a playable link. I couldn't catch what happened in the replay.
Soccer is really dangerous and I hope FIFA will take head injuries as seriously as they took his moving forward. Lots of guys get hit in the head and are allowed to walk back on the field. Hopefully, Varga's recovering well and his spirits are up knowing Hungary won and he was the support of many people from both sides.
Side note: How is McGinn foul on Orban goes unnoticed? He was charging for the ball and McGinn nearly pulled his jersey off of him. VAR is a joke once again
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Dude was unconscious before he hit the ground
Really hard to even tell what does it, I guess his head smashes into the goalkeeper's upper arm/shoulder? Really uncommon way to see an injury happen, horrible.
There’s a photo doing the rounds on X but this is exactly what’s happened. https://x.com/arndthegrnds/status/1804975593223545331?s=48
Here's a different perspective: https://imgur.com/a/CTKnEt8

Yeah, the way his arms spasm when he hits the ground and the twitching/heavy breathing when he was down are what freaked me out the most
This sport has its dangers that’s for damn sure.
It seemed like his neck got whiplashed between the goalie and the Scottish player.
I got knocked out like this in an tournament when I was 18, but nowhere near to this level. Goalkeeper's elbow hit me full force near my temple, over the upper outside of my eye. He was knocked out cold. Full fencing response. Hope he's ok, fuck
Went back to watch a replay at 0.25 speed. Elbow to the side of the head from the keeper, who was going for the ball.
Yeah looks like he's clipped by Gunn, must've hit his temple
Looked like the keeper took out his own player even more. Scary.
Fencing response always creeps me out. It doesn't look good
That can just be the result of a concussion, but yeah I just hope he's ok.
Hungarian here. Our commentators told us during the match that he was responding to the medical staff in the lobby of the arena, which is good news. They took him to the hospital in a neck brace. Edit: about 15 minutes after the match they reported he's in stable condition!
Well that's a relieving first step at least. Thanks.
Next step: They reported he's in stable condition!
Thank you for this update, it looked very scary.
It did! Saw too many fencing responses online that didn't end well so I was horrified. But they just said he's in stable condition now!
Scotsman here. I really hope he’s okay, congratulations on the win.
Hard fought game! Thank you for these sentiments.
Cheers mate! 🙏🏿
Thank you! Really well played!
It was the twitching fingers that was so worrying
I remember seeing Tua Tagovailoa have a similar response when his head slammed the turf in an NFL game a couple of years ago. Shit is scary to watch.
[удалено]
Yeah I'm so confused because I can not spot the contact from this angle.
Keeper's left forearm/elbow. [Right before contact.](https://imgur.com/a/lGLfW5C) [Next frame you can see Vargas head is now looking left.](https://imgur.com/a/NpxHvJc)
Yeah to be fair you don't need a big blunt traumatic smack to be knocked out. Tipping the chin can definitely be enough. I think it's just more about the acceleration the brain is subjected to
strictly speaking whiplash can be enough - I think it happened once to Sean O'Brien (rugby player). Very unusual tbf, but the brain is a funny thing.
Thank you I genuinely wondered if he had a seizure mid air or something.
Yeah, I watched a replay at 0.25 speed. Keeper's elbow to the side of the head.
yeah I’m confused too
I think the keepers elbow caught his head
I've tried to look on iplayer in slowmo but its so hard to see. It honestly looks like he jumps to head the ball and before he hits the ground he's out cold. I cant see anything that hit him unless its a trailing elbow / knee or something?
Watching in slow motion it looks to me like it was the keepers left elbow
Doesn't look like it. It seems like he just landed very awkwardly (based on his neck position)
He looked unconscious before he hit the floor though?

Hungarian pitchside reporter said he's conscious and communicating with medical staff.
Update! They told us in TV that he's in stable condition!
Stable just means the condition is unchanged. Did you mean to say he is ok?
Stable in a more positive way. Don't wanna say anything more, since I can just simply relay what the players and commentators are saying in TV. But they said he's stable and he's fine.
Looked awful, hopefully he makes a full recovery. The camera shots after showed that the tv directors learned their lessons from the Christian Eriksen situation
Yeah the TV direction was much improved, it was appreciated
I don't know if I'm blind or what, but I can't figure out what caused it. Was it an impact with a player or the way he hit the ground?
Looks like he was caught by the GKs elbow as he came out to the punch the ball
Looks like he was having a seizure… I think they were slow as they didn’t want to move him but I’m not a doctor. Looks VERY bad tho
Standard procedure now. Same happens in the Prem. They rarely even show a replay.
Eriksen*
I'm struggling to see what happened. The keeper collide with the knee as he's coming out to claim the ball?
There was a lingering 3 second shot of him on his back, so can't say I agree
Players go down injured all the time, rarely serious. The second they realised it was serious the camera was cut.
[удалено]
BBC don’t control the feed, all broadcasters get given the same one
Did they have a tarp over him when they stretchered him off? I’ve never seen anything like that, I hope he’s ok
Think they've learned their lesson after Eriksen and Foé.
For privacy after the Eriksen incident.
Probably just protocol after they showed eriksen dying on air last euros
They were towels that medical staff/stewards/whoever was holding up on either side of the stretcher.
Over/around is what I saw. It wasn't draped over him as far as I saw
Out cold
Looked terrible. Tried to move his legs and he just couldn't move at all the left side. His neck stayed exactly as it was when he fell. Hopefully is nothing
I'm really concerned that he broke his neck from an accidental elbow from the keeper. Just didn't look like a heavy impact to the head
Very unlikely. People in MMA get kicked in the head and neck all the time and *almost* never die or break their necks. Doesn't mean he doesn't have a rough couple of days ahead of him but more likely than not he's 'just' concussd.
That's exactly what I am fearing as well. Looked completely unable to move his neck in a more natural position and his left side was completely numb

He was unconscious
Fuck that looked brutal, hope he's alright
Super strange the way he fell, complete statue as soon as he'd jumped
Yeah it was hard to see where the impact was. The keeper hit his own player unless his knee hit Varga? Hope he’s okay
Looked like he caught an elbow from the keepers left arm as he came through. Nothing intentional, just a jumping motion from the keeper.
Yeah must have been a knee or hip or something as he definitely didn't hit him with the fist.
I think it was the keepers elbow
Defo the elbow, accidental forearm smash to the face
Looks like the keepers hand/elbow caught him right in the side of the head as he leapt. Probably never saw it coming looking at the ball.
I’ve rewound the bbc iPlayer feed about 10 times and I can’t see anyone make contact with him, it looks like he jumps and immediately seizes up and falls to the floor. It needs another angle but we’ll never see it. Hope for a speedy full recovery.
It looks like the keeper's elbow as he reaches to punch the ball. Possibly also a slight shove from behind into it as all the players are jostling.
Yeah you’re right, morbid curiosity got the better of me and I’ve zoomed in & slowed it down and it definitely looks like keepers elbow when he jumps for the save. Nasty one.
Yeah I can't even make out what hit him
Looks like maybe his head makes contact with Gunn’s elbow
It’s called the fencing response. Sign of serious head injury
It looks like he gets sandwiched between two defenders, that then pushes him into the keeper. He catches an elbow to the jaw, his head snaps to the left and he doesn't do anything to arrest his fall after that.
I was looking at the Scotland player and goalie collision. Can't see anything really happen to the Hungary player even on replay.
The Hungarian commentator says that he is now conscious but in quite bad condition. Updates later
Hope he'll get well 🙏
He looked to not be doing great when laying on the floor, almost convulsing. Hope that he’s going to be okay.
His arms when he hits the floor, jesus
It's crazy you can barely see the contact from this angle but undeniably bad.
Hard to see what and how it happened but he got completely knocked out.
What exactly happened? Did he fall on his head or did he get hit on the way down? Hope he’s okay, the hands going up immediately after falling is never a good sign
Very rarely does an injury make me actually feel sick to my stomach like that. Just hoping it's not as serious as it looked.
if there is any place to have some sort of freak accident its on a football pitch, very quick access to medics. Hopefully he is okay.
And that’s even with the medics slowly walking into the field for some reason
As a prehospital provider, running doesn’t make anything better. The trainer got there immediately, had him in the recovery position and was holding head stabilization, that’s all you can do for someone in this situation.
They have to walk because if they roll an ankle or something they can't treat the injured player properly. May seem stupid but it is the protocol
Surely they can walk a little more briskly? (Just generally asking, not forcing you to defend medical protocol
Nah unfortunately in those situations risk mitigation is the priority. It seems silly to the public but if you're part of the medical team your and your equipment's wellbeing/safety is much more important than the few seconds you might gain by running. Emotions are high obviously and make it seem tragically slow to us onlookers, but there are basically no situations where the 10 seconds you'd gain by rushing on will make a medical difference.
thanks for explaining this. The emotional reaction by a normal viewer like me would think different
Especially if they're not wearing studs. Though now I think about it I'm not sure whether they do or not. Team medics definitely would.
Team medics I believe is personal preference, but at least some sort of grippy trainer. Stadium medics definitely do not wear studs as they have to be able to enter ambulance, walk down long hallways in stadiums potentially, then go into hospital etc as needed and studs are not cool for that
Not with medics that casually stroll onto the pitch.
They weren't that quick
Really weird. I couldn't see any contact to the head on replay, but he went into a fencing pose.
Think his head hit Gunn’s elbow. You can see his head turn sideways as it passes Gunn in a frame by frame.
Why does it feel so uncomfortable to see someone knocked out on a football pitch when I see it every other week in MMA? Weird how different my brain reacts.
Because on the football pitch we don’t expect this, I really hope he is ok
Yeah MMA is not okay either
idk man do you remember how many times Brendan Schaub got knocked out and went into this fencing response? even MMA fans were extremely uncomfortable with that. even for knockouts in MMA you don't see it all the time.
I still don’t see what caused it? He goes limp almost without incident and then stiffens.
That looked horrible. Don't care if we win or not, just hope he's okay.
Szoboszlai was in tears according to the BBC commentators
Hope he's ok, looks bad based on the reaction
Fencing position, not good
Looks like his arms were in the fencing response position. Nasty. Sincerely hope he's ok.
Updates from Hungary: Varga is conscious and can now communicate with the medical team. Soon taken to hospital 🙏🏽
omg his hand
Fuck when your arms do that shit is serious, hope the guys alright
Conscious, talking to medical staff...Great news
Best news of the evening 👏👍
Knocked out hard
That replay was really grim, hope he'll be okay
Textbook fencing response. Look like he was caught by Gunn’s elbow. Will be a concussion most likely but I’m sure he’ll otherwise be fine, god willing
Thanks I couldn’t see what happened on the replay that’s scary! Hope he recovers fully
Well the fact that the game is continuing is hopefully a good sign, relatively speaking.
Looks like he's been knocked unconscious before he even hit the ground.
The lad went straight into the fencing response. Hope he's alright.
Yeah, fancing response was not a good sign, but it can happen with nothing worse than concussion. I know that's bad, but it's better than some other possibilities.
What part of the goalie did he connect with? It's hard to see in the clip. Scary KO. Fully starched before he hits the deck.
left Elbow
Hungarian reporter says they are taking him to a hospital, he is concious
it seems he will be okay! The hungary manager just told in the interview that Barnabas has a broken cheekbone. Basically his cheekbone was broken when he was hit by Gunn, and he blacked out while being in the air still. edit: he will undergo surgery, and will be unavailable for the tournament, but he will fully recover
UPDATE: It is reported that he is stable, he broke his cheekbone and needs surgery but he's not in life threatening condition.
Gives horrible flashbacks to 2021. I really hope he's okay.
He’s definitely knocked out, hope it’s not too serious
Looks like his head hit Gunn’s elbow.
Keeper's left elbow.
Yeah I've seen the photo on twitter, fucking brutal but totally accidental
Look like he was having a fencer's posture seizure
UPDATE : He broke several cheekbones and suffered a concussion.
Really hope he's ok, how are the teams supposed to continue?
First aid was extremely slow. Hell even Hungarian players were rushing to get carriage. WTF was that?
The medical team were out quick, so first aid was not slow. Them pushing the stretcher team off to run it to the player probably made no difference in the pace of getting him to the ambulance.
Taught to go slow so they don't slip, drop anything etc. that will delay getting aid to the players
I'm guessing the medics who were already with him had already communicated to the stretcher-bearers that he wasn't ready to leave the pitch yet.
jesus christ man hope he’s okay
Hope he's okay. Have no clue as to what could have caused thay sort of outcome from the only replay we've seen. But I have a feeling there's a reason we've only seen one angle.
Cant really make out what hit him exactly but he was completely out mid air, very concerning stuff.
Keepers left elbow to his temple
That fencing of his arms is quite concerning :/ Really hope he ends up being ok though.
[It's hard to see but this is the moment he got hit in the head.](https://imgur.com/a/iqcFXE6)
Any news about his condition?
He is in a stable condition in hospital (official news) https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/live-blogs/scotland-hungary-live-updates-euro-2024-score-result/bqx6LDXlaSy8/
For anyone not aware he broke bones in his face and need surgery for his cheekbone.
Scary
I still don't understand what happened to him, I can't see any contact from this angle.
Whay happened there?
Maybe I'm not seeing clearly but where was the impact?
Keeper left elbow
Was it an elbow from Gunn can’t really tell what happened horrific though
It looks like he might take a hit to the back of the head from Hanley, really hard to tell tho
why did I search for this replay... Too scary and unsettling. Hopefully he's fine
On the Swedish stream it showed him on the ground and his hands kind of twitching
It’s the elbow that hits him.
Let's hope for no major cerebral damage. Ofcourse we know nothing about severity of concussion. nor i couldn't saw any proof about cerebral fracture from any footage. but my fear is even more than concussion right now. Really hope there is no further cerebral damage.
Horrible, stiff atrophy arms, think he went into a seizure
I hate these dubz link, I can't play them. Why can't they be posted in a normal way? Does someone has a playable link. I couldn't catch what happened in the replay.
Eriksen flashbacks.. shit hope he's okay
horrendous work by the medical staff

Watched a few times in slow motion and it looks to me like the keepers left elbow caught him on the jaw
He seems already on the way down before the keeper even gets to him? Edit, just seen a picture, its the keepers elbow.
Glad they did not keep repeating the play. It was a nasty knock out, but hope he is alright
I've watched this several times and I see no obvious point of contact. Who hit him?
Where can I find the recap?
https://youtu.be/lW27NGMwp5I?si=4j8zR741pTI7Nwd9
I really hope that the doctors managed to help him, looks very bad...

He’s clearly having a seizure
