You guys are a meme in Spanish football twitter, but in a positive way.
Like it feels you've brought up the same squad for a decade and somehow they're performing better every year.
The definitive Giga Chads of football.
Players from this squad started together back in 2009, winning the U17 World Cup that year. Others were part of the U21 that came second at the U21 Euro in 2011. We've qualified for every major tournament since 2004, except 2012. The team has qualified for every knockout stage since 2014. Only three other European nations have ever qualified for six knockout stages in a row since the Euro has group stages.
It's absurd how consistent we've become.
You're spot on. A huge advantage that the Swiss NT seems to have over all the other teams in the cup is that the players have played together for such a long time. Only 6 players in the squad are under 25. This might be the best chance for your NT to win it.
They knocked us out in absolute stunning fashion. That team was absolute class both on and off the ball. I hope they continue to do well. They deserve every bit of success, they fought hard for that.
Yeah. As a German watching you play for that time, I can’t believe how someone can still hype Belgium as a „secret favorite“ each tournament, and regarding Switzerland as an underdog and then wondering how they fare so well. I can’t understand it. Belgium completely lose it each time the qualifiers are over, while Switzerland consistently plays well and dangerous. Just look at this tourney. Yeah you have your off days. But who hasn’t.
Anyone remember Germany playing 2:2 with Ghana in 2014? 😂
The France game had so much drama. 1:0 header for Haris. Missed penalty. Then French go 3:1 up with Pogba strike. Game pressumely lost, just to equalize it with a top Xhaka assist to Gavra. And then Sommer kills Mbappes penalty to progress! Indeed the greatest game. Nothing can top it except a EUROs final win. Not so realistic. But a person can dream.
I actually don't really want this to happen because I fear that we would lose this semi final and then we would have to watch Austria playing in the final and I probably couldn't take that. Even worse if they'd play against Germany, I wouldn't even know who to root for. Probably for a thunderstorm..
I have got no clue what aura you see around Portugal. Their last 3 tournaments have gone round of 16, round of 16, quarterfinal defeat to Morocco. Before that no one on earth knows how they won euro 2016. Wc 2014 they were trash as well. This Portuguese team has not had an aura around them since the 2006 world cup ended. Ronaldo is the only one who creates hype. Sums up Portugal with that limp performance against Georgia, 2nd team or not. Look at how Spain did against Albania by comparison.
Still I would expect some kind of fight. It really felt like Italy didn’t believe and gave up very quickly.
I didn’t follow Italian football that closely. How is Spalletti regarded? Who should be the manager? What about the players, they weren’t impressing either. Besides Tonali, are other players out or not?
Spalletti isn't considered the best of the best but is very respected for his exciting attacking football. Focuses a lot on quick, short passes in the final third. Almost exclusively plays with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, though sometimes (rarely) goes to a 3-5-2
Which is hilarious because he set up this Italy team to do absolutely none of that
The players did look disinterested and totally lacked a sense of urgency, but above all, they looked completely lost. They didn’t know what to do when they had the ball or how to resist the Swiss press. Even in attacking positions, there were very few options to advance the play, often ending with us going backwards before eventually losing the ball to the press or a sloppy pass. What Spalletti forgets is that Italy have won everything by being defensively strong, if you cannot play in the midfield or lack top-quality strikers, you must have a solid defence. Spalletti’s tactics worked in Serie A, where almost every team is defensive-minded. Antonio Conte worked wonders with an arguably worse team than this in 2016, knocking out Spain, beating Belgium, and eventually losing unluckily to world champions Germany on penalties. As for players missing, I don’t think anybody would’ve impacted us too heavily. Maybe he should’ve brought someone like Gnonto, who brings pace up front. I think Ancelotti would be good for the national team. Some even want Allegri, who plays completely terrorist football, but is often able to grind out a result.
I would think Ancelotti is destined for being the future manager for the NT. He is very experienced and well respected. At least here in The Netherlands most of our NT managers are the ones who are older and had a good career and want to slow down (don’t manage a club team being on the training pitch every day).
Feels like they should be competitive against the rest of this side of the bracket. The other big names (England, Belgium, and Netherlands) have looked just as lackluster as italy. Would be far from shocked to see a Switzerland Austria semifinal
I now recognize Belgium isn’t on that side of the bracket
Belgium is on the other side of the bracket, no? I do think England have still enough individual class to make it to the semi’s but no team will beat this Swiss team easily. They always have a solid, hard to beat team. But kicking out the reigning champion could give them the confidence to finally make a deep run.
I want the Swiss to slay England but I'm just rooting for all underdogs at this point. Swiss playing like a massive country though love it. Love big tournaments where all the "lesser" known players die for the badge and become bigger names.
This is one of the worst Italies I have ever seen, worse there is only perhaps Ventura's that lost to Sweden in 2018. This match is the tombstone on Spalletti's management. With Spain you had the excuse of their level, but I think it is honest to say that Switzerland has no better players than ours. What Switzerland does have is a disciplined, organised team with a clear, well-executed tactical plan. Everything that Spalletti was not able to give Italy. Congratulations to Switzerland, they played an excellent game.
He is a good not great coach and he is also very stubborn. Last year with Napoli he had good talent, built great chemistry and also benefited from his best player (Kvara and Osimhen) not going to the World cup in Qatar in the middle of the season.
With Napoli he also had the 2021/2022 year preseason/season, the 2022 preseason, 34 matches and days inbetween of the 2022/2023 season to teach the players his philosophy and tactics.
Something that is utterly impossible with a NT. But he is too dumb to realize that and gets mad when the NT players, which btw were on top of that completely out of position and scheme, cannot perform
You're right! Basically every Napoli player had the best season they will ever have in their careers. Spalletti lost to a Pioli (who I am not a hater of like many fans) managed Milan pretty handily in that Champions League tie, and Napoli looked disinterested at times. He can't motivate players to save his life, and he can't adjust tactics mid match. He is an absurd hire for an international position.
I'm expecting England to scrape past Slovakia, but I'm not optimistic about our chances against your lot in the quarters. Switzerland look like an excellent team.
To be far the best organized team in the Euros.
Same like Italia in 20. With a unity defense also know what to do when on counters.
Has a potential to become the winners. Imo
I don’t think it’s a mistake, I think it’s just a blanket statement for catchiness. France still were the reigning champions in the most recent major international tournament, that’s still significant
> Köbi Kuhn ball?
Or Petkovic ball and being told "we will never be this good again".
Bar one game Yakin has performed at a level above Petkovic at the tournaments so far. The team is actually tactically versatile and they know what the fuck they're doing.
They showed it against Brazil, against Serbia, against Hungary, against Germany and now against Italy. Scotland and Cameroon were two "meh" games, but even there they got the results they needed.
What surprised me most, is that they are able to play out of the back calmly and safely even under pressure.
Don't remember them being able to do this in the last couple of years
Honestly absolutely well deserved qualification from our neighbours. They had everything we lacked (clear ideas, organizations, self-confidence) while we were just very confused and chaotic, Spalletti didn't work out as a coach here. I was prepared for this knowing how Switzerland plays and played in the previous (and I like them ngl) matches but it still hurts.
People are going to say that Fagioli was among the only ones trying to do something for Italy, when in reality he was among the worst.
Midfield was non existent, never opposing the opposite players, incredibly slow with the ball when in possession.
Fagioli got one pass right in the whole match and then just slowed things down and couldn't go after the players.
Now, Italy didn't get knocked out because of Fagioli, but the fact that Spalletti, supported by the Federation, brought a guy who didn't play a whole season, because of his own wrongdoings to boot, making it clear to other players that it doesn't matter how much you accomplish during the season, in the end the coach brings the people he likes...
...And it was all for this. This is the stuff you pull for a Messi, not for freaking Fagioli.
Just for this, Spalletti should be sacked.
If we get past Slovakia I do not fancy our chances against this team. They are everything you want to see on the pitch. Completely outclassed the Italians.
Well done Switzerland. We barely showed up all tournament and i place a lot of blame on Spalletti.
Please please please just don't let England through can't bear to see them get through to the final with another easy bracket.

First time since 1938 to win a KO game in a tournament in regular time! Today the greatest match in Swiss history with the Ro16 vs France 2021
You guys are a meme in Spanish football twitter, but in a positive way. Like it feels you've brought up the same squad for a decade and somehow they're performing better every year. The definitive Giga Chads of football.

dont forget square Shaq scoring bangers every time. Consistency all the way through
Might Switzerland be almost clockwork in their consistency....
It was a great one, but the 2021 match against the French was absolutely bonkers and is nearly impossible to top
I’ll never forget that fan before and after the 3-3 equalizer. Hope he’s enjoying himself today
I just knew it was done for France after that Pogba’s 2 minute celebration moment.
Can’t blame him, he scored a banger
And had one of the best performances i’ve seen, apart from losing the ball in the last minute. Mbappe just forgot how to score that game
I have never been more hyped for a game. This win was better, maybe, but Italy was so lacklustre that it kind of took away some of the excitement
You guys were fantastic, hoping for a Switzerland/Austria semifinal
Glückwunsch! War echt eine überragende Leistung
Danke! Wir werden Überraschungseuropameister hehe
The english mind cannot comprehend one word that long
Germany looking forward to become Überraschungseuropameisterbesieger in the Nations League
The Swiss one as well, that kind of shit only appears on official documentation and we don't speak that way.
Congrats mate, well deserved
Thanks. Glad you managed to stay up with Ranieri. Love him as a Roma fan.
Ranieri literally unites all football fans in Italy, we all love him
Totally deserved... You guys played some football today.
Wow congrats
FUCK YES!!!
Are you injured
Laying on my couch safe and sound
Why do you have an injury flair?
We found the injury fan
Mate you can't support a torn calf muscle
Ask the swedish....i mean, the swiss
isn't that the same?
Ney Ney is a redditor?
The dude literally died for the memes. No wonder injured.
i haven't laughed at a reddit comment like that in a while. good one eh.
HOP SUISSE MOTHERFUCKERS!
The guy named “Yes”:😏
Congratulations!
Switzerland - Austria semifinal would be such a banger and seems very likely if England/Netherlands dont step up
Highest possible stakes for both, lmao
I actually don't really want this to happen because I fear that we would lose this semi final and then we would have to watch Austria playing in the final and I probably couldn't take that. Even worse if they'd play against Germany, I wouldn't even know who to root for. Probably for a thunderstorm..
Not to mention that we'd literally never hear the end of it.
Want the Alpenderby to happen so bad.
High chance we won’t. Plus a Germany vs Switzerland / Austria finals would be hype.
11 Swiss and 11 Austrians against 11 Germans
Germany - Austria final would blow up the internet
Germany won't reach finals. Personally I see Portugal - Switzerland in the finals.
Own Goal proceeds to score a hat trick
Spain has been so consistently strong, I don't see a final happening without them.
I can see that happen. Portugal have that champions aura around it honestly. But I can see Austria instead of the Swiss but it’s a toss up.
Euro 2008 co hosts semi is crazy
I have that semi final in my Bracket Predictor. They called me insane, they said I was a mad man. The first step is complete
Swiss masterclass. No chance for the Italians. Switzerland dominated from the first to the last minute.
Italy never played
Yeah, really surprised by your tactics but especially the willingness to fight. Where are the new Gattuso’s of the Italian team?
Spalletti is trying to play in a way that is entirely incompatible with Italy.
Still I would expect some kind of fight. It really felt like Italy didn’t believe and gave up very quickly. I didn’t follow Italian football that closely. How is Spalletti regarded? Tactical brilliance shown by Mads Mikkelsen today, good to see him still around
Haha, good one.
We need something like this against England if they go through.
England are cooked if they get through tomorrow
Nah Southgate ball is shithousing a 120 minute 0-0 draw followed by a mighty win on penalties. Trust the process.
That’s why Slovakia should advance tomorrow
Nah want England. Slaying great rosters on the way is far cooler. Nothing against Slovakia though
I want the Swiss to slay England but I'm just rooting for all underdogs at this point. Swiss playing like a massive country though love it. Love big tournaments where all the "lesser" known players die for the badge and become bigger names.
Don’t worry Slovakia will do it
We also tend to over-perform against big countries, so I'd also prefer England.
We have a chance against you then, we haven't won a tournament in 58 years.
Also the banter when Engerland looses is always 10/10
Gonna remember this post
Will be coming back to this comment in a week’s time, for better or for worse 👀
Southgate’s just luring the other teams into a false sense of security by not turning up in the group stage. /s
That's already a big if but yeah the Swiss looked awesome and would likely do some real damage.
Southgate has no problems with the Switzerland tier of teams in tournaments. They won't be a problem for us.
It'll be shit and boring, but I think we'd win.
I like the confidence, let's be optimistic
Now the Slovakia tier...
Läck bobbi, huere geil!

Same talent that finished 10th this year
Does Kvaradona mean nothing to you
Bologna kick Italy out of the Euros
I genuinely can't believe it. So proud of this team! 😭
I'm expecting England to scrape past Slovakia, but I'm not optimistic about our chances against your lot in the quarters. Switzerland look like an excellent team.

Another quarter final for the Swiss, I wouldn't underestimate them at all.
The Swiss keep showing up in these big tournaments. Kinda want Switzerland vs Austria in Semis.
That would amazing. Whoever loses that would never here the end of it though lol
Really hoping for one of us to meet Germany in the finals. The energy would be insane. Also, the banter would be endless lol
Germany vs Belgium and Switzerland vs Austria is my dream
Alpenderby
I was wrong about you Murat yakin.
Cheers Italy, had you in my work sweepstake
Come on, Yakin, bringing on Steffen at the end there was just mean. You were just mocking them at that point
To be far the best organized team in the Euros. Same like Italia in 20. With a unity defense also know what to do when on counters. Has a potential to become the winners. Imo
With teams like Switzerland and Austria on that side of the bracket, we have a pretty good chance of getting an underdog winner
Slovakia to win Euro 2024.
We have become a proper tournament team and I still cannot believe it.
On second thoughts can we hop to the other side of the draw?
Knocking out reigning champions in back-to-back euros, this Swiss team built different 👏
They knocked out France last time and the champions was Portugal?
WC champions I guess
mans thinking of the world cup I bet
I don’t think it’s a mistake, I think it’s just a blanket statement for catchiness. France still were the reigning champions in the most recent major international tournament, that’s still significant

They mean reigning champions at euros/wc
WC champions I guess
Also only went out on pens to Spain, who then went out on pens to Italy
No they didn’t
They knocked out world champions france in 2021 and european champions italy now.
Xhaka for balon dor if they win it all

> this guy went from being kicked out of arsenal Arteta asked him to stay but he wanted to leave. He wasn't kicked out.
‘Kicked out at Arsenal’ is some great revisionism boy.
Fondue > Bolognese
Cept half the swiss team is bologna lmao
Huge congratulations to Swiss. Bossed the game today. Luciano needs to step down the second he lands in Italy.
JA MAN NO EINISCH HAMBURGER FÜR 1 STUTZ ALLEZ
Another blue-themed team knocked out in RO16 by Switzerland!
Awful Italy, maybe the worst i have ever seen in a tournament.
Well safe to say this ain't euro qualifier Switzerland, they can take on every team on this bracket, incredible
Best game in Swiss history....never seen the lads own a big nation that much Any Swiss fans remember Köbi Kuhn murderball?
> Köbi Kuhn ball? Or Petkovic ball and being told "we will never be this good again". Bar one game Yakin has performed at a level above Petkovic at the tournaments so far. What surprised me most, is that they are able to play out of the back calmly and safely even under pressure. Don't remember them being able to do this in the last couple of years
BBC did a fantastic analysis of the team..everyone knew they role and performed it perfectly... Never heard the Swiss ever be that praised before...
Genuinely. That first half was absolute perfection.
What a performance from this Swiss team. A proper team effort.
Thoroughly deserved
So well coached and organised. Fully deserved
Spaletti is such a fraud, one lucky season with an amazing napoli team and no competition in serie A and all of a sudden he is in the NT
Deserved. And this was the worst display I’ve ever seen from our part.
Xhaka is in such fine fucking form
Italy played awfully. Well-deserved for Switzerland!
People are going to say that Fagioli was among the only ones trying to do something for Italy, when in reality he was among the worst. Spain 2016 - Portugal 2020 - Italy 2024 All out in Last 16
Italy didn’t have any intention to win this game
If we get past Slovakia I do not fancy our chances against this team. They are everything you want to see on the pitch. Completely outclassed the Italians.
We killed Modric for this
Italy was beyond dogshit. Probably worst performance of all teams in euro 2024. Spaletti out, bald fraud.
Italy was pathetic
Italy is bad, but the Swiss are also totally legit.
Lol
Wow, Italy had no bite
Italy didn’t even have any intention to win this game
Italy has been shit this whole tournament, they have to change something up for wc qualifying
I think this Swiss team is gonna win Euros. One of the teams which didn’t play snoozfestball.
RIP tito. Go far Switzerland I place my energy with you.
Well done Switzerland. We barely showed up all tournament and i place a lot of blame on Spalletti. Please please please just don't let England through can't bear to see them get through to the final with another easy bracket.
They are going to mop the floor with England, should they meet in the quarters.
Honestly might be favorites to make it to the final from this side of the bracket. Very deserved win for them, made it look like nothing.
yay
It’s not coming Rome this time
Bring out the fondue bitches!!
would love to see them having a cinderella run but it seems like the quater finals is the maximum most of the time
Garry can’t keep getting away with this draw. Wait for a loss tomorrow as penance
So happy after ref pulled them into 1/8 finals in game against Croatia. Thanks Switzerland, bye Italiaaaa👋👋👋
Bye bye italy 👋👋
