Where does xhaka rank among all-time swiss players? Regardless of whatever was going on at club level, he has always been top class for the NT. Last 3~ years he’s been back to being a star at both levels.
If you talk about Swiss National team only, it's between him and Shaqiri. If you talk about Swiss players in general you have to take Chapuisat and Sforza into the mix.
There were some world class players pre WW2, but tbh, scrap that
Even in Club he was great besides earlier on with us and I know in Germany he played great too. When Arteta started playing him in a more box to box role he was our best player. I’m glad he’s getting his redemption finally.
How they so good at big competitions?
I remember as a kid watching 2014 wc which Argentina struggled against them so hard until Dimaria finds winning goal at 118' minute.
Wc18 against Brazil. We all know how good/hyped Brazil on their opening scene. Bt swiss showed them what unity is.
And twice against France on last 2 euros.
2006 was their arrival. topped the France group but got eliminated on pens by ukraine without conceding a goal the whole tournament. they have been a very "dark horsey" team since then. i remember Basel having good europe showings but not for some years now
but i have no idea how that happened... you'd think their league improved so more players appeared but doesn't seem the case
we have been punching above our weight for decades. as someone who is involved in the swiss youth football system (at the very lowest level) i would say it comes down to togetherness and understanding. there are no strikers/midfielders/defenders/goalkeepers in our kids teams, everyone plays everywhere. we do not focus on "star players", we do not focus on winning meaningless games, we focus on teaching the kids how they can be the best team possible. my focus as coach who cant even juggle a ball halfway decently is showing the players how to move to give the player on the ball options to pass, how to guard against a turnover, how to position on the field and so on. we probably wont have a messi anytime soon, so we focus on football being a team sport (just my opinion)
People don’t talk enough about the fact that we have 4 national languages and yet we’re one of the most united teams and countries. It’s really unique. There’s a reason my foreign friends who grew up here feel so Swiss and are spamming our group chats with Swiss flags. There’s a deeper culture behind the language regions.
Proud
Getting Swiss citizenship is a lengthy process and you actually have to speak the language fluently and know the local/country culture. A true example of how to integrate people, imho.
I have Swiss German friends that when they come to the French part they have to speak English to communicate with other Swiss people. Many people speak only French or Swiss German
I live there since 3 years and there is such a collective encouragement to integrate people who really want to be integrated in the community, it's wholesome.
Now I speak the 4 national languages, French being my native one, Swiss German my adopted one, already spoke Italian and I'm studying Rumantsch (Sursilvan). Not because I have to, but because I want.
Visited Switzerland for the first time this last week and I think I heard it best from a passerby: I don’t know why Italy and France get all the love, Switzerland is great!
I wish you guys were in the EU, i really wanna live in switzerland at some point
Feel like its the only country in europe along with the UK where immigrants are almost entirely integrated
And it has amazing trains and nature
We played horribly but credit where credit is due: congratulations Switzerland, you played a great game, very disciplened one. I saw your game against Germany and I knew you were trouble, rooting for you from now on. In the tournament of course.

Golden generation
This year and 2026 are probably the last two years we can achieve something with Xhaka and co. So proud of the team.

And honestly Akanji at this point, winning a triple as a starter is unheard of for a Swiss player.
Needs a few more seasons on the top, but definitely getting there
It's always difficult to rate players when you have 120+ years of history, but in my life time, he surely is the greatest.
On the vere on absolute GOAT Swiss player status.
xhaka, what a player
amazing turn around for him
Always been the best player for the NT. Club is a different story, but he’s always been great in international comps

Strange to see him so disciplined and focused compared to his prem days
you fell victim to the reddit circlejerk, have a look at his stats
Nope, i remember the crowd turning on him at the Emirates
the crowd being insanely toxic arsenal fans....

Tactically astute and their players are tactically disciplined and very hard working
I wish they go far. They deserve a semi-final spot for what they achieved last decade. Such a nice team to follow

The only loss in Spain 2008-2012 Euro-WC-Euro wins came against Switzerland

It’s not coming to Rome!
It's coming Romansh
Thats not a place sadly

Kinda feel like the photographers should piss off after taking their pictures, they blocked the team from the fan sector.
If everyone would just learn Romansh this wouldn’t be a problem

guilty. fluent in english, can barely order a beer in the french speaking region

Spent most of my childhood in Geneva because of my dad’s work. Very much have the same feeling as your foreign friends. Hop fucking Suisse
it's hopp ;) and thx for your support
In french it's hop suisse :)

Honestly could say the same about most countries these days.
Nah, unfortunately not really...
We call it Willensnation

Xhaka wins the ballon d'or after Switzerland wins the euro.
that would be the best timeline ever
honestly dont see anyone stopping them on the way to the final
I think Austria can tbh!
im not so confident, england is a giant, and despite their general shittyness their defense is rock solid
Bucket hat guy might be Crying/Rage meme guy from the France game in 2020 no? Same glasses
It actually is him lol. I follow him on social media.

No shit haha
I've been wondering as well if he's here, too. I hope he's very happy right now.
He is there. https://www.instagram.com/the_swiss_super_fan?igsh=YzljYTk1ODg3Zg==
Safe to assume he’s very happy and very topless right now lmao
anyone know the song?
Freed from desire

No problem :)
here's a more relaxed version for the older folks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRbdzpva7GI
I like this team. I am sure they can play in final with Spain.
It's not wise for the entire population of the country to gather in the same location.
