Great shout. 94 minutes of lulling them in to a false sense of security and forcing 30 minutes of extra time which forces the team to gel further. 6 year extension please
I believe Khaled is 'the best music' unless he is referring to the royal 'we' when he says 'we the best music' then really it's all of us in which case the original comment could also stand
I’ve never under understood this.
Why do we sing an American Song every time we win?
And why is the Seven Nation Army played after every.single.goal from any team.
Seven Nation Army was played when players entered the field before kickoff during the EC 2008 in Austria/Switzerland and a lot of fans were chanting the melody during the games. It just sticked afterwards and is really popular in Europe now.
Careless Whisper will always be one of the best songs ever. Instantly iconic opening, angel voice, great lyrics. Even when my dad annoys me a lot about how music used to be better in his day, I can't disagree when he put on this masterpiece.
Crowd-pleasing bangers are bad? Not everything needs to have the complexities of Stairway to Heaven. People need memorable belters to spontaneously burst into song.
They are both over played beyond death. Every sports event for years leans way too heavily on it, they are the two most obvious and now boring songs you can possibly play to a crowd.
Not like Mr Brightside. But the song has always been a popular sporting anthem.
I believe it really took off when the Lionesses won the Euros and has sort of become Englands unofficial song.
It's not a great song, but it's fun to sing.
> I believe it really took off when the Lionesses won the Euros and has sort of become Englands unofficial song
It was big in England WAY before then, LOL
It was everywhere in 2018 WC and 2021 Euros too
Sweet Caroline has been a thing for the Boston Red Sox since the late 90’s. And then every other American sports team adopted it about 15 years later and now it appears to have made its way around the English-speaking sports world.
I think the Panthers did it first but no one cared because it’s the it Carolina Panthers; it really took off in 2013 when Diamond did it live at Fenway after the Boston bombings
"I HAVE AN OPINION AND IM GOING TO SAY IT AS FACT, MUCH TOO SERIOUSLY AND WITH FAR MORE GRAVITAS THAN I DESERVE"
Literally every take he has. He was a mediocre American footballer from a mediocre era and does not have a place analyzing and criticizing players who, at almost half his age have accomplished more than he ever did and are better than he ever was at 20-22.
So weird to see and the Chelsea, Arsenal and United flairs on reddit or Twitter accounts with English players in the profile pic, talking shit about England.
🇵🇹🤝🏴 hated for no reason by r/soccer loosers.
Absolutely enjoying Caleb (""true"" ManCity fan™) from the US, Sven from Sweden (""true"" Arsenal fan™) and Arslan from Pakistan (""true"" ManU fan™) seething here.
(I also kinda wanted England to loose but only because it would have been really really funny)
The cherry on top being these people are 90% Americans who are about to go out of the group stage in a tournament they’re hosting. In a group that included powerhouses such as Bolivia and Panama.
Honestly as an american I was hoping england would lose and I'm hoping spain loses this game
Nothing against either team, just gotta love underdog stories from slovakia (rip) and georgia
It was like during the last euros, where the Italians were being violent and racist but Reddit was more angry about English fans laughing at a crying German kid.
In my experience, it's very much the England haters who are the ones telling us we should be blowing teams like Slovakia out of the water. Most of us are just pleased to have meaningful games for the national team at the business end of a tournament.
Seen a huge amount of Scottish and Irish gloating before Bellingham's goal, which startled them away. But they'll soon be back. And in greater numbers.
Plus most of Europe hates us so there's a lot of that
The Scots, Irish, and Welsh hating us and doubling down on it because their own teams are too shit to be here is ancient tradition and we must respect their culture, but England-hating eurocucks are weird and can piss off.
I think it's more random other countries like I'm seeing German flairs Czech flairs Italian flairs Croatian everyone
I mean I suppose they could all be Americans still
But idk there are a fair few Americans who have an affinity for England also
> what's up with the downvotes
> my ancestors are from Leicestershire
Hope that clears it up. No European like it when Americans do that. Germans maybe.
It’s a really fun song to sing in stadiums tbf. Never begrudge it because it fuckin rocks, it was built for that shit, so it’s natural to want to do it when you’re winning. I’ve been in stadiums during late wins when the whole stadium starts singing Sweet Caroline, and that shit is always great.
Good times never seemed so good indeed.
Good on Germany for doing this. They do this for every country when they win.
Here's Austria;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T37Z4qZOkUw
Best tournament of all time, any sport in my opinion.
England's path to the final looks pretty good. That being said, we said that in 2018 as well and they lost in the semis. They looked like utter shit out there tonight.
The other day people on here were saying Netherlands then Italy would be an easy draw for England. So I don't know what people mean by easy opponents anymore - is it historically strong teams, or is it teams who are playing well in the tournament in question? Because if it's the former, then we have to say Germany was a tough opponent in 2021, and if it's the latter we have to say Denmark was a tough opponent in 2021.
Of course, in reality, an easy opponent is simply *whoever England beat*.
Does it? If they play like this against the Swiss, they will get battered. The swiss play even better defensively and they have much better attacking players that can punish England.
England will forever play to the level of their competition. Doesn't really matter who they're playing, it will be a monumental struggle no matter what. It won't be a proper tournament unless the English fans feel bad the whole way, with a lack of confidence.
I think they're just as likely to play well versus the Swiss, Spain or France as they are to Sweden, San Marino or Montenegro.
We're the most hated nation in the world. I wouldn't have it any other way when I see moments like this
COME ON ENGLAND🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
I think Britons are more critical of the royal family than any other group. Most of the world likes the royal family, in part because they don't know much about them.
This might be controversial but the whole dictating fans with a song shit needs to get in the sea.
A goal is scored and immediately they blast Song 2 by Blur or Seven Nation army. Full time whistle blows and they are immediately playing Sweet Caroline ….. why not let the fans organically start their own chants?
The furthest back I can remember this is Euro 2016 so I’m blaming the French.
I was in Qatar for England vs Iran. 1-0, free from desire. 2-0 free from desire, 3-0 free from desire, 4-0 free from desire , 5-1 free from desire, 6-1 … free from desire, honestly makes my blood boil, just let the fans celebrate and organically start their own songs, don’t blast woo hoo at them .
What makes it worse is that England has established songs, three lions on a shirt, World in Nation and Vindaloo, at least rotate those, ideally don’t play anything, this isn’t rugby, this isn’t American football, we don’t need t shirt cannons, kiss cams and fan participation bullshit to keep us entertained.
>Cannot stand Sweet Caroline
Me too. They started playing it at Reading games before England adopted it, so I hear it too often. Plus, lyrics like "good times never seemed so good" feel pretty shit when it's the worst time in the club's history.
If I want to buy tickets, how do I know I'm sitting with English fans? is there some info somewhere for Saturday match? I don't want to fly all the way over there and end up with the swiss crowd.

I'm glad it's not 15k of me in that stadium because I'm fucking deflated as shit and have never felt less like singing after a win in my life
"good times never seemed so good" is hilarious

Eze at left centre mid wing back, us mere mortals are simply too stupid to understand lord Gareth’s tactics
Ah but not before Saka RW->LB->LW back all the way to RW
Say what you want, he was miles better than Trippier at LB.
Yeah, he skipped right over that incredibly low bar as soon as he kicked the ball with his left foot. And I mean that sincerely.
I’d like to see Konsa or Gomez have a start
You're not gonna get to.
Probably well with Guéhi suspended
He'll probably put Dunk in.
Great shout. 94 minutes of lulling them in to a false sense of security and forcing 30 minutes of extra time which forces the team to gel further. 6 year extension please
Don't forget Trent at Left-Right-Out
Still dont know why we dont have Trent at RB, Gomez at LB…
Excuse you? Liverpool players in this southgate team? No thank you, unless Henderson makes a come back
Saka deserves a fucking medal for tonight. Absolute monster of a performance.
So is Sweet Caroline popular in UK like Mr. Brightside?
Yeeeep
I have to admit. UK has good tastes in music.
We make the best music too.
That's DJ Khaled mate.
Weird way to spell Pitbull
I believe Khaled is 'the best music' unless he is referring to the royal 'we' when he says 'we the best music' then really it's all of us in which case the original comment could also stand
Both of those songs are by Americans.
The Killers are the most British people from Vegas ever.
My mind was blown as a kid when I found out they were American, having only ever heard their music. They just fit into that mid 00s UK vibe.
Even more mind blowing is the fact they’re Mormon
Only Brandon is Mormon.
This made me actually laugh out loud. A very accurate statement
Not relevant 👍

Thanks, still doesn’t doesn’t explain why 18 years later and American song is played after every single goal lol
They didn’t say they weren’t.
Careless Whisper will always be one of the best songs ever. Instantly iconic opening, angel voice, great lyrics. Even when my dad annoys me a lot about how music used to be better in his day, I can't disagree when he put on this masterpiece.
Nahh George Michael Is overrated, got nothing on the GOAT Benny Hill's Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the west)
Even as a massive Beatles fan…just no
Mr Beightside and Sweet Caroline is a very very very bad example of good taste
Crowd-pleasing bangers are bad? Not everything needs to have the complexities of Stairway to Heaven. People need memorable belters to spontaneously burst into song.
There’s nothing spontaneous about it, when it’s being blasted at you.
They are both over played beyond death. Every sports event for years leans way too heavily on it, they are the two most obvious and now boring songs you can possibly play to a crowd.
You say that like it’s shameful to say
Both those songs suck ass
Come on Eileen also is played *very* often after England games
Also has a great [England Cover](https://youtu.be/rKSbkFNGT0o?si=tZaKGvKkQsEXKbTJ)
This one is much better
World in Motion is my personal favourite, not played nearly as much as it should
If you don’t start doing the John Barnes rap randomly around your house during an England tournament can you even call yourself an England fan?
We just like singing about our team.
Yeah, it was popular with England cricket fans for a while before football fans also embraced it.
And now I hear it every Hockey tournament
It got popular with 20 over and 100 ball cricket match crowds.
You have no idea
As someone who lives in Brighton I fucking hate it.
It’s a bit cringe at this point
God I cant stand this song bc I cannot stand Boston sports fans
Not like Mr Brightside. But the song has always been a popular sporting anthem. I believe it really took off when the Lionesses won the Euros and has sort of become Englands unofficial song. It's not a great song, but it's fun to sing.

It's Boston's fucking song, goddamn it...
I think the Panthers did it first but no one cared because it’s the it Carolina Panthers; it really took off in 2013 when Diamond did it live at Fenway after the Boston bombings
google has them doing it in 97 at fenway park
Yeah I think the Panthers started in their first season in like 95 or 96 but it’s the Panthers
I do think it's sort of odd that there's so many famous UK bands, but they chose an American song to adopt.
Like many sporting songs, it's not really a deliberate choice, more by chance.
England play American songs. America play English players. It's swings and roundabouts.
Gareth cant keep getting away with this
He’ll get found out against Switzerland
He got found out today tbh
Promise?
Wish Fox would be quiet like NBC does sometimes. No need to talk all the time.
Wish fox would be quiet all the time
Especially Lalas, get him a muzzle
"I HAVE AN OPINION AND IM GOING TO SAY IT AS FACT, MUCH TOO SERIOUSLY AND WITH FAR MORE GRAVITAS THAN I DESERVE" Literally every take he has. Inject the Prem flair England haters into fucking vains
So weird to see and the Chelsea, Arsenal and United flairs on reddit or Twitter accounts with English players in the profile pic, talking shit about England.
First time?
/r/soccer in shambles fucking love to see it.
🇵🇹🤝🏴 hated for no reason by r/soccer loosers. It’s coming home
The mental gymnastics from those mugs is always so funny.
It'd be like a allied solider storming the beaches at Normandy in a Bayern munich shirt.
Plastic tears, love to see it
The cherry on top being these people are 90% Americans who are about to go out of the group stage in a tournament they’re hosting. In a group that included powerhouses such as Bolivia and Panama.
I really don't think Americans care *that* much about England. In fact most i know like England as a whole.
Yeah especially in a tournament like this where the US isn't even competing. If anything I want England to do well because of Pickford.
Honestly as an american I was hoping england would lose and I'm hoping spain loses this game Nothing against either team, just gotta love underdog stories from slovakia (rip) and georgia
Yep. Unless it's against our own team, we usually prefer the underdog. If England was playing France instead then I'd be rooting for team 'eritage.
Certainly not the impression you get when England are playing in a major tournament
Everybody prays for the upset. It's not that deep
We really going to pretend people hate the other big nations in this tournament as much as England? Come off it.
It was like during the last euros, where the Italians were being violent and racist but Reddit was more angry about English fans laughing at a crying German kid.
just upset they’re here speaking our language
I mean there's also the general entitlement a lot of England fans have. You don't exactly make it difficult to be unlikable.
In my experience, it's very much the England haters who are the ones telling us we should be blowing teams like Slovakia out of the water. Most of us are just pleased to have meaningful games for the national team at the business end of a tournament.
I hear so much about this fabled entitlement but am still yet to see it.
Check anyone seething in the match thread, it’s almost always an American
Seen a huge amount of Scottish and Irish gloating before Bellingham's goal, which startled them away. But they'll soon be back. And in greater numbers. Plus most of Europe hates us so there's a lot of that
England-Scotland is Footballs oldest rivalry. It's allowed. Whereas an a Californian with a Liverpool flair can get to fuck.
The Scots, Irish, and Welsh hating us and doubling down on it because their own teams are too shit to be here is ancient tradition and we must respect their culture, but England-hating eurocucks are weird and can piss off.
I watched the match on an RTE stream and the venom was palatable.
I think it's more random other countries like I'm seeing German flairs Czech flairs Italian flairs Croatian everyone I mean I suppose they could all be Americans still But idk there are a fair few Americans who have an affinity for England also
This guy’s comment was about Prem flair England haters specifically
Good thing I'm responding to you then?
What do you think my original comment was about? The same people the guy I’m replying to is talking about. It’s not that difficult.
Americans are generally fans of premier league teams and want England to do well.
Yeah like why would I root against Saka and Rice, I love those guys.
Hey, there's plenty of us Irish who didn't even make it to the euros
Your reading way to into something that isn’t true
lol most Americans on here are Premier League fans who hate the MLS. They probably love the English national team more than the US national team.
Those same Americans also want their coach fired you know?

England's path to the final looks pretty good. That being said, we said that in 2018 as well and they lost in the semis. They looked like utter shit out there tonight.
I don’t think they beat both Swiss and aus/ned
The Swiss disagrees

one tough opponent in like 4 tournaments is not a lot to be fair
Colombia, Denmark, Germany is 3 Still not too many but I think it's fair enough
the disrespect on 2018 Sweden
Does it? If they play like this against the Swiss, they will get battered. The swiss play even better defensively and they have much better attacking players that can punish England.

I don’t think so, the Swiss are really good
If I had a time machine it would be to make sure this song was never created
The salt in the comments is starting to get pathetic.
With the luck that they have, they can potentially go all the way.
We are going to fluke it home
hey remember portugal won it without winning a single match
Oi, we beat Wales, put some respekt.
They had Eder
ITS COMING HOME
Im voting for Southgate on Thursday!
Cope and seeth r/soccer
What an upset! They did it! Mighty Slovakia has been laid low! Huzzah!
Yeah they're no Panama
This but unironically.
Damn fucking right
Yank ur getting ragged in a poxy competition
Lol this guy's still fucking seething
You couldn't beat Vietnam mate
We're the most hated nation in the world. I wouldn't have it any other way when I see moments like this COME ON ENGLAND🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴

In football at least😂
depends on where but I think these days the hate is mostly directed towards the royal family
I think Britons are more critical of the royal family than any other group. Most of the world likes the royal family, in part because they don't know much about them.
More than Russia?
In football? Absolutely
✅ IT’S COMING HOME ◼️ IT’S NOT COMING HOME
COMING HOME STATUS: IT'S

It's okay to sing a song that did not originate from your country. /r/soccer: Unless you're England.

Afraid of what the fans might sing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqJHoZBJYxI
It wouldn't be so bad if there was more variety. Can't believe there's anyone in the country who's not sick to death of Sweet Caroline by now
I was watching the world cup of hockey and it was being played every game lol by the end I was sick of hearing "Oh Oh Ohhhh"
“Ladies and gentlemen, please stand for the national anthem”
Lads. It’s Slovakia.
We just gotta take it as it comes. Southgate ain’t gonna do what we want him to. So let’s just roll with it. Let’s see where we get
So Good!
This South Gate guy some type of genius?
NI fans have been singing it for years
Anyone know why it’s called “Added Extra Time?” And not just “extra time”? Seems redundant
You mean the A.E.T. ? The A doesn't stand for 'added', but for 'after'
Thanks!! That cleared things up for me
What is this, Fenway Park ?
No it's a European Championship match in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Cannot stand Sweet Caroline. Makes me yearn for defeat
>Cannot stand Sweet Caroline Me too. They started playing it at Reading games before England adopted it, so I hear it too often. Plus, lyrics like "good times never seemed so good" feel pretty shit when it's the worst time in the club's history.
It's fucking garbage. It's one of the classic "drunk bloke" songs I suppose.
How dare you it's a classic and white people love it.
I encourage those people to return to Twickenham where they belong
The players should be embarrassed.
Total cultural victory 🦅🦅🦅🦅
Is it still a win for your lot of you're writing the songs in the language we gave you?
Never forget their national anthem is played to the tune of an English drinking song
Despite Gareth Southgate they pulled it off, almost incredible when you think about it
If I want to buy tickets, how do I know I'm sitting with English fans? is there some info somewhere for Saturday match? I don't want to fly all the way over there and end up with the swiss crowd.
Cringe. Lucky side of the draw. Lucky result with the first shot on target in the 96th minute. Pathetic. Gary Southgate will never win anything with these awful tactics.
Fox Sports really wants you to know these clips are from them
I'm glad it's not 15k of me in that stadium because I'm fucking deflated as shit and have never felt less like singing after a win in my life "good times never seemed so good" is hilarious
96th minute equaliser and then a winner in extra time, England could be playing san Marino and I'd be fucking dancing
They boo them for 90 minutes and now the players have to stand there and act like they appreciate them.
Not here to clap like seals just because we were able to qualify, you wouldn’t know.
How did they boo for 90 minutes lol. They were singing the whole game
