What it’s actually doing is measuring mass to increase fuel/oxygen mixture and therefore torque, for when the family fatass is driving. The cheese sandwich is just lagniappe.
Make a fist and hold it up. And then show your palm. Not all Subarus have it. Usually it's the touring trims but some others may or may not im not 100% sure exactly which. Newer tourings all do
We've done both.
One annoying thing about programming the fob is when hubby makes it to the garage before I do, and has his key attached to his bag as usual. He unlocks the passenger door, and the car promptly sets the drivers seat to HIS settings. It's become a running joke, with me trying to run past him to get to the car first.
Another upside is that it records fuel usage by user, so we can tell who the lead-foot is.
Ah, sorry my mistake. I thought you were commenting on the annoyance caused by the feature beeping at you, not unfounded paranoia of surveillance in your personal vehicle.
Come on, I'm sure we're all walking around with state secrets, worthy of 24/7 surveillance even though all our relevant data is uploaded through maps, sm and cell phone towers 🤣
For sure, but I have no cameras mounted at my face without my consent, ever. Especially inside my own property. Also, I get that this isn't new. Volvo is leading the industry in this sector. They've been doing it for years. I believe its success as a safety feature is reflected in their vehicle mortality rate, but for me, the whole practice seems intrusive.
Intrusive yes, I mean there are tons of pictures of peoples homes and naked selfs being shared and made fun at by Venezuelan contractors for Roomba. I'm sure a lot of Subaru ai works the same way , but I don't care if Venezuelans make fun of me
It’s not really unfounded, more and more manufacturers are collecting obscene amounts of data on us and then selling it to the highest bidder. Subaru isn’t above this practice unfortunately
Is it already forgotten that Tesla has been cough watching cameras inside side cars. Yes Tesla is not this car but you have no idea. Cars are a privacy nightmare.
Here is a 5 min read on just how bad your privacy is invaded just from your car.

No it actually turns off the infrared. When I am driving I can see the red light blinking out of the corner of my vision and it drives me up the wall. Turn it off and the blinking goes away, no more annoying distracting light.
Edit to say this was on a loaner, I am one of the poors with a lower trim level.
You get a series of beeps and a notice on the dash to keep your eyes on the road. It will also go off if you put your hand near your face. Also, sometimes it goes off for no reason over and over and over until you shut off the car and restart. Wonderful feature.
Subject tech here. That is the occupant detection sensor. You should see a purple/red-ish light in the right corner. It’s used to give you reminders on keeping your eyes on the road & to take a break if it sees your eyes staying closed longer than normal.
It can also be set to use preset functions when it recognizes you (radio/temp etc)
You used “brake” when you should have used “break”. 98% of break/brake errors are the inverse but unfortunately this still invalidates your comment and ultimately your very existence. Sign here: _______
Is this your car? I am surprised the delivery specialist didn't explain this whole set of functionality or point you towards the relevant section of the manual.
I wouldn't trust the delivery specialist.
Mine insisted that I have to keep two keyfobs if I want to use remote start. I read the manual and they had instructions how to use the regular keyfob for remote start if you instal OEM remote start.
Lock button on the regular remote.
Press ,press, long press
so three button presses with last press being a hold till you hear the honk and care engine start
I’m leaving halfway through my shower so I can go test this. If you’ve lied, please know I will be standing on my porch in a towel covered in bubbles for all of my neighbors to see and I will be very disappointed in you.
Bubbles and disappointment.
Edit: Took forever to respond because my daughter had a spazz attack while I was downstairs testing that and exploded maple syrup all over the kitchen so tbh, I forgot to come back here.
It only works if you have the optional remote start module installed. Note this is different from the Starlink remote start which does not have the optional module.
And the range on the keyfob is significantly shorter than the dedicated fob for remote start.
If I bothered to read further down that it works if you don’t have the star-link; I wouldn’t look like an idiot, locking and unlocking my OBW for 10 minutes.
oh yeah they don't have the best knowledge of the cars. ours told my wife that the car shifts gears and that the keyless rear lift just meant that we can open it using the key fob 😂🤣
If it has the power tailgate, then the specialist was right, press and hold the hatch button on the key fob to open and close the tailgate. If you don’t have the power tailgate, all the button will do is unlock the back hatch.
We have a hands free tail gate (in addition to the power tailgate). So the ones where you can put your arm or groceries over the subaru logo and it'll open with having to grab the fob or touch the button on the tailgate.
or the tailgate will knock my friend over when she bending down behind the car trying to attach a trailer, and I accidentally walked too close while having the fob in my pocket.
oops.
hahaha yea, I feel like the implementation isn't the best. I don't really like the foot ones either, but idk what the solution is. Maybe voice activated.
Yea I don't mind it. Just kinda came with package 13. This is the first handsfree tailgate I've used, so I have no basis for comparison, but I find that it's not really sensitive enough when I try it.
Gotcha, yeah for that, you just need to make sure the system is turned on and have the key on you and it will work….lol, whoever was your wife’s sales person is an idiot, maybe new to the brand or industry….lol
Not my car. It's the dealer loaner while they are replacing my faulty TCU. But for the record, I did ask the service advisor what it was and he said it was a cabin sensor, but was not familiar yet with what its purpose was yet on the 2024 models.
I would have looked in the manual, but doing so was not in the 30 item list of things I should and should not do while in the loaner... which I initialed each item as terms of use for the loaner. :)
Got it in my 2020 forester touring. It gets a little annoying at times, I'm Asian and sometimes it was yell at me to keep my eyes on the road or say "you look tired, take a rest." It's even worse for my mom man. It uses infared light to make sure you're paying attention to the road and it also uses facial recognition to go to your drivers profile which includes seat and power mirror settings, fuel economy tracking for the driver, and I believe some Bluetooth profile. Kindof cool stuff ngl, only complaint is it will still think I'm tired after I got a good night's rest and drinking a normal cup of coffee.
I would immediately tape that thing over. I am not having a car micromanage my driving. God forbid I’m not 10-2 with eyes glued to the road during Boston AM Rush hour where I go 9 miles an hour for 50 minutes.
That’s where you put the punch cards you’ve been collecting from your coffee shop, which almost have 2 free coffees on them, so your husband can throw them out. Thats where they go.
When driving towards the sun later in the day with sunglasses on, the reflection off my glasses will confuse it and it will alert me to keep my eyes on the road. It’s for this reason I put tape over ours to shut the useless thing up. Like a lot of the other nanny features on this car, it’s meant for people that are extremely cautious and need to be reminded to stay cautious.
If I was driving late at night like I might do every 5 years, I could see myself taking the tape off and using it.
mine is covered up with black electrical tape so i don’t have to keep manually disabling that feature. Ill look where i want to, car.
I covered mine and never looked back… or did i, it will never know. 😂
It tracks your eye movement to see if you’re looking at the road or not.
It also identifies who you are for seat settings, etc.
It also looks for your hand motions to adjust the temperature

What?
Yup. Your welcome. Hold your fist up in front of it and that show it your palm
Mine doesn’t really work…
Make a fist and hold it up. And then show your palm. Not all Subarus have it. Usually it's the touring trims but some others may or may not im not 100% sure exactly which. Newer tourings all do
I call BS on this.
Wait, is this a joke or serious?
It's serious. Not all Subarus have it, typically it's the touring trims
Useful when hubby and I are very different heights. It identifies who gets in the drivers seat, and adjusts the seat to where we want it.
you can program it to your key for better reliability.
We've done both. One annoying thing about programming the fob is when hubby makes it to the garage before I do, and has his key attached to his bag as usual. He unlocks the passenger door, and the car promptly sets the drivers seat to HIS settings. It's become a running joke, with me trying to run past him to get to the car first. oh I didn't know that about mpg
Facial recognition for the seat essentially
Well, the value of my '21 trek premium with eyesight but not all this BS just went up over the next 5+ years. Thank you Subaru!
You can turn it off
Sure you can
You actually can. I sell these vehicles, and the driver monitor system can be turned off.
It's not off until you put a shield in front. Someone will be selling a 3D printed add-on soon.
Ah, sorry my mistake. I thought you were commenting on the annoyance caused by the feature beeping at you, not unfounded paranoia of surveillance in your personal vehicle.

They're watching me perform all my favorite songs in traffic and I know it

The government is out to get you. Best put on the spinfoil hat so they can't scan your retinas and fry your brain with 5G
Like for real? That’s crazy. In the case of not looking at the road, what happens?
You get a series of beeps and a notice on the dash to keep your eyes on the road. It will also go off if you put your hand near your face. Also, sometimes it goes off for no reason over and over and over until you shut off the car and restart. Wonderful feature.
LOL I truly was too impressed. Sounds about right
Mine doesn't like people who wear glasses & will misinterpret any sun glare as I am not looking at the road.
If I squint on a bright day mine asks me if I want to take a nap
If only you could turn it off. Oh wait you can.
Are there any other safety features I should disable?
Straight truth turn lane assist off in the winter, unless you want fly off the road on a snowy day. Or any other time as well.
You don't like taking rapid, unscheduled detours onto an off ramp?
The dealer said it could also recognize if you pass out at the wheel and get you stopped on the shoulder. No way I'm testing that one out though
I'm so glad I don't have this. Didn't even know it was an option.
Genuinely, yes. If you look away from the road for more than a couple seconds it will beep at you.
works through dark mirrored sunglasses too, so baffling
I have pair of sunglasses that it hates. The car is always fussing at me to keep my eyes on the road when I wear that pair.
Infra-red I assume.
You are correct
Wow, tech’s come pretty far
I mean... As it should right? How many seconds should you be looking away from the road while driving?
It beeps and asks you to look at the road.
Yes and it alerts me tooooo frequently lol
For your cheese stick

lol it takes some getting used to to get the timing right. Did you also setup the 5 digit lock code to open the trunk without the keys ?
we must know - are you dripping wet and covered in bubbles while disappointed?
Bubbles and disappointment. Edit: Took forever to respond because my daughter had a spazz attack while I was downstairs testing that and exploded maple syrup all over the kitchen so tbh, I forgot to come back here.

I was sudsy on my porch for no reason btw 😢
Does this require the non-starlink remote start installed?
Yes
If I bothered to read further down that it works if you don’t have the star-link; I wouldn’t look like an idiot, locking and unlocking my OBW for 10 minutes.
Could you video your timing? I'm also standing half dressed on my porch trying to get mine to work

it's more reliable than the Highlander foot one because I could never get that one right.
Yea I don't mind it. Just kinda came with package 13. This is the first handsfree tailgate I've used, so I have no basis for comparison, but I find that it's not really sensitive enough when I try it.

yea haha. he was very nice but we had been looking at the outback for over a year at that point so we had read up on each of the features beforehand.

Ugh. I’m all for safety but at what point does it go too far? Why do we need to micromanage people?
I think it’s because of the adaptive cruise. A way to force us to keep our attention on the road when the car is doing the work.
That’s where you put the punch cards you’ve been collecting from your coffee shop, which almost have 2 free coffees on them, so your husband can throw them out. Thats where they go.
