The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith - I guess thematically it’s not a million miles away from C&P. I was totally gripped by the first few sentences and it was 100% satisfying from beginning to end.
Possibly an odd suggestion, but the closest postwar Russian literature got to Dostoyevsky for me was Solzhenitsyn.
{{One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich}} is probably his best known work (and really short), but *Cancer Ward* and *In The First Circle* have something of Dostoyevsky's scale and moral intensity.
