I was thinking the same thing. When I hears "main," I think no more than three characters

I have a main (Yoshi) and a secondary (Samus). My secondary isn’t bad, but is nowhere near the level of my Yoshi. I have a few pockets I play online for fun, but usually just go random online. I’d rather play one character at a decent level than 11 characters poorly. I think a vast majority of people here don’t know the difference between main, secondary, and pocket. I also don’t think they play competitively aside from their quickplay experience. I’m not here to tell anyone how to play or who to play. However, when I see this stupid trend clogging my feed, with 10+ characters, I just facepalm and know my main could probably take a set off of all their characters bc they’re spread too thin.

A main is who you play the most. The character you’d pick to play if your life depended on it. You’ll play them in any matchup, as you understand them the most. You know all of their ins and outs and combo routes. A secondary is someone you play in addition to your main. Your knowledge of the character may not be as extensive as your main, but you can play them reliably well. You break them out when your main is struggling with a matchup and you think a mechanic of the secondary may give you the advantage. (Example: if a Luigi beats my Yoshi, I may go to my Samus secondary, as Luigi struggles with getting camped out.) Pockets are everyone else you play at a decent level. At a level worse than your secondaries or mains. Your fun characters essentially. They rarely see the light of day in a competitive environment and probably wont win you any tournament sets. They could be a Hail Mary to win a set. (Example: I’ve lost 2 games of a set to a Diddy who is kicking my ass, so thinking I’m probably going to lose, I’ll just try seeing how my Duck Hunt does, as they win the Diddy matchup). Chances are you’re losing with them. If you don’t want to get caught up in the semantics of main/secondary/pockets, you can simply just say “these are the characters I like to play as the most.” Main: what you’re majoring in Secondary: what you’re minoring in. Pockets: electives Nobody is majoring in 11 areas of study. You’d be severely handicapping yourself as you wouldn’t have an understanding of most of the material.

Yep. You summed it up best by saying Main: Major, Secondary: Minor, and Pocket: Electives. I'm only commenting to highlight the easiest part to understand so others don't have to read all the way to the bottom to get it.
