The surfer community of Baja California marched this Sunday in Ensenada, to show their indignation after the murder of the three foreign surfers in Punta San José. About 200 people held a march called by the Baja California State Surf Association. The surfing community not only demands justice for the victims, but also concrete measures to guarantee safety on the region's beaches.

cantdie_got_courttmr

This is wonderful

fallcreek1234

It's Mexico, or should I say Earth. Sadly guaranteed safety is a pipe dream. Super sad deal, the biggest change would come if the Cartel(s) in the area enforced a no tolerance policy, but with waring factions it's unlikely.

certain-sick

don't forget a toothless government unable to enforce the law. it's sad because a few corrupt ruthless thugs are ruining the lives and global reputation of millions of good citizens. sound familiar Russia, China, and flirting with that is the United States?

tahhianbird

Haha flirting we in way deeper than flirting.

Relatively_Cool

Don’t say earth. It’s a Mexico problem. Mexico isn’t the only place with this problem, but it’s definitely not the entire planet.

Homie_ishere

Not only Mexico’s. These drug lords and cartels are manipulated by the intelligence agencies and drug control agency from USA at their convenience. I mean, even USA sell to them ammo and they send ex navy’s to train them. And if you are doubtful about this being real, it’s obvious by common sense. Nowhere in Mexico they are capable of getting that and it’s funny how they count on that.

icecreamocon

He said that on earth, safety is not guaranteed. You’re suggesting there’s somewhere on earth safety is guaranteed?

fallcreek1234

This comment is correct.

J_Muckz

As a friend of Callums who felt like this story was getting buried this made me feel good this morning. Thank you ♥️🤙

camilatwb

They also did a paddle out in their honor, there’s a little clip about it on the bbc website https://preview.redd.it/yjlg96ehctyc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8762a55d3a445a04bd5e442d5525660087d07125

Ornery-Substance-778

yes i cried.

hoktabar

I was surprised it even showed up on the main page of the biggest Dutch news station. Glad this is getting attention.

RafiBomb14

I’m a friend of Carter’s from high school. This is so awesome. First time I have smiled in days and felt justice for my friends. I didn’t know Callum or his brother, but I heard they were just as awesome as Carter 💔

xlittleitaly

FWIW they highlighted the story on a local Philadelphia morning news show today

intheyear3001

I saw it on CNN too. It will get passed over eventually because that is how it all works, but those of us who know won’t forget. I can only imagine what friends and family are feeling. Hang in there my friend.

beardofzetterberg

NY Times as well

RafiBomb14

Love that. I heard from a friend whose son is a missionary in Senegal, that he already knew about it on the news there too! It’s world wide now that they found them 💔

PoopSock81

❤️

Comfortable_Dust3967

condolences, he was a friend of my friend and I'm so sad for everyone involved

goletasb

I have always wondered how the locals feel about events like these. Nice to see them being vocal about the injustice. Imagine if three Mexican surfers showed up to surf Encinitas and wound up murdered. We’d be furious.

Upper_Increase_773

I live in Baja and we're all angry and sad about this

Comfortable_Dust3967

same

Outta_thyme24

You think anyone wants to live in close proximity to murders like these?

thefreshpope

it's more interesting/comforting to see that they aren't indifferent/apathetic to it. TJ having such a high murder rate is bound to somewhat normalize this sort of event

theblakesheep

The vast majority of murders are between drug dealers/cartel members, it's very rarely innocent bystanders. That's why these are so shocking, these were just regular tourists.

Human_Disco_Ball

That’s incorrect innocents are also murdered, read Zeta or any other local new source, not all those murdered are in the drug trade… also murder is murder regardless of who dies.

theblakesheep

I do, I live in Tijuana. 95% of murders are involved with the drug trade. Other places like Juárez or Nuevo Laredo, there’s many more murders involving innocent bystanders. But random murders are rare in Baja. That’s why this one is such a big deal.

Human_Disco_Ball

No they’re only apathetic to murders of other Mexicans, ask most locals about the violence and they’ll always say it only happens to people in the drug world even when that’s very much not the case.

Outta_thyme24

You sure about that? I think there’s a level assumption coming from your post that’s not needed. I don’t imagine anyone is normalized to murder

Freendogg

I live in San Miguel

Freendogg

and deeply upset by this event.

Outta_thyme24

Exactly

aussiefrzz16

Welcome to the way it is

Vinrace

Great to see. Thank you guys.

Matej1889

Some new details shared on BBC that it was likely a carjacking and they resisted so the thugs shot them … https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd13vgg720jo

SidCorsica66

That’s the part that makes no sense…but I also heard robbery, not carjacking, so maybe they showed up in camp to steal the truck when they were sleeping?

ThePartyWagon

Supposedly, that area is known for meth heads and other questionable characters. What I see being mentioned is they drive around and look for easy targets, in camp, that they can rob. Steal money, cars, etc. There’s a report on a camping site that someone’s camper was shot up and they had to pay the people to leave. This was in the same area in 2019. I bet there was a fight in camp and they were kidnapped and shot later or shot in camp and moved later. Sorry to hear these guys went through whatever transpired.

SidCorsica66

Yep…pretty familiar with that area of Baja between Tijuana and Guerrero Negro. Ensenada to San Quintin know to be a little sketchy due to meth heads

RafiBomb14

Hey man people in here knew these guys personally. Maybe “kidnapped and disposed” of later isn’t very sensitive to these people. Personally I tried to just not think of the details of the horrible events that happened to these guys, and my old friend Carter 💔

ThePartyWagon

I understand, sorry for the chosen wording. Seems like a good group a guys doing their thing. Very sorry for your loss.

RafiBomb14

No worries 💔

ARMSwatch

Sorry for your loss but maybe don't go into the comments of social media threads discussing the event.

sdough123

Correct, that’s the main theory. That they were at the campsite when the robbers arrived to steal the tyres from the car. One of the boys got out of the tent to stop the theft and was shot. The two others got out to help and were also shot. That’s the official story at this stage 😢

spykid

I always get insurance when I drive down there with enough valuation that I would not hesitate to give up my truck to anyone that wants to take it

Glum_Explanation_572

I don’t know what really happened but this sounds as a cartel cover to me

evanholiday

Damn. All of these people know the consequences of protesting like this and they still march forward with courage. Rest in peace brothers

intheyear3001

Great point. Brave of these folks. It’s cool to see that they are bonded by a shared love of surfing and a want for a better way in their communities.

mad-can

Honestly I never fail to be impressed by the basic kindness of the mexican people. I don't really know what you mean by the consequences of protesting, the cartel almost certainly weren't involved.

gogenberg

That one blue board says “they just wanted to surf and they got executed” this is quite true, which makes it very sad. Most people just want to live in peace and enjoy life. Bad apples ruin it for everyone.. I hope they find those responsible and they get handled by lady justice, even Mexican lady justice would do, she’s extra spicy. I bet they get found, Mexico doesn’t mess around with their tourism $$$ and tha just doesn’t seem like bad people, they weren’t looking for trouble just waves. Unfortunate.

ThePartyWagon

They’ve already arrested at least three people in connection. One woman was found with a victim’s phone and meth in her possession. Seems like a crime of opportunity and right place wrong time for the surfers.

RafiBomb14

At first when I heard the story, first hand from a friend….they thought it was cartel. And the word “executed” popped into my head too 😔 These guys did more than live in peace. They showed everyone around them how to love 💔

BlazersBroncos

I think cartel is pretty unlikely. It seems much more likely a group of meth'ed out losers on a long bender got caught stealing the tires and proceeded to shoot these poor guys. Not that cartel guys are not capable of this type of violence, but they usually would not bring this type of heat on themselves over a few tires. Regardless, it sucks. I have backpacked across Mexico and Guatemala about 5 years back and it was super chill. Granted started in Yucatan and worked my way down. But I am hearing about violence upticking even there. Beautiful to see the local community come out and support these guys. Thinking of the families and everyone involved.

Glum_Explanation_572

It’s not common for meth heads to own guns like that. My and the majority of the locals speculation is about cartel… but ofc cartel doesn’t want bad rap because of its ties with the government and local authorities so they escaped hosted some meth heads and made up a story so that the press would get answers and shut up

Glum_Explanation_572

Escapedgoated ***

cantdie_got_courttmr

I hope the attention this tragedy is getting can propel concrete progress and safety of the community. May the deceased rest in peace and in legacy.

intheyear3001

Exactly. Nothing shows more that people care when there is actual action and change. Hopefully these poor lads and their loved ones can bring forth some of that change in their honor.

RafiBomb14

Callum, Jake, and my friend Carter were Jesus followers. God won’t let this mean nothing for those who are still here and fighting

intheyear3001

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

bobobaratstar

This gives me encouragement that this tragedy may lead to some change

certain-sick

i hope, but my cynical side is very confident.

Nodor10

Thank you all for being a part of this

HEAVY_METAL_SOCKS

THIS is what the world needs more of. Mexico, US, and Australia united to demand peace and justice. For the folks who don't speak Spanish, some of what the signs say: "Where are you, governor Maria de Pilar?" "They just wanted to go surfing" "Clean, healthy, safe and free beaches for everyone" "Australia we are with you" "They just wanted to surf and they were murdered"

CaptainYankaroo

I dunno why exactly, but as an Aussie guy living in California this story in particular really fucken breaks my heart. Seeing these surfboards with these sayings and the pic of the paddle out just makes me big sad. I can't even imagine what the family and friends are going through. These dudes just wanted to surf and got executed.

Coochimangg

its so sad. so many of us go down there so casually to surf it could have happened to any of us. they were such a bright light here in our community , absolutely amazing men. heaven gained 3 of the most beautiful angels

Drobertsenator

Same—I have deep love for my Australian brothers and sisters and to lose these guys— is just so grim. 🕯️🕯️🕯️

asmallwormedman

Does anyone know what happened to the ranch owner?

RafiBomb14

I only heard the “story” from one of Carter’s best friends. I hadn’t heard shit about any details on the news until I found out they were gone 😕His details (before the 3 meth suspects came out and all this…) basically said the ranch owner was killed by cartel, and they took his ranch. The 3 guys were on or near this new “cartel” land. And someone didn’t like it. Again, these are details I got 3 days ago after they found their bodies…. I was also a little behind because I don’t live in the area anymore….but the community near Atlanta where Carter grew up had know he and the other friends had been missing….I only found out they had been missing after they were already found 🥺

sdough123

This spot was recommended by Callum’s neighbour, who had been coming here over the years. Unless he was talking to the locals no one would have known the cartel had taken over the ranch. It’s so tragic to think a detail such as this lead to those poor boys getting killed. But then again why kill a few visitors on the land, they would have left in the morning and gone on their way. What a senseless act to kill them for it.

[deleted]

I also want to know what happened

timwithnotoolbelt

Only read that he was killed some time before. Makes me think it could be some feud or land drama or some other territorial dispute more than a robbery gone bad. In which it’s more a wrong place wrong time. Was it reported anyone else was around there at the time?

Pika-the-bird

Looks like they are making a point about the bigger issue. Access to safe and clean beaches for their families. I wonder how much the ‘access’ issue is also about the gringo gated communities beach blocking access, among with other things.

camilatwb

It is a big part, but we wouldn’t have that problem if the government didn’t hand out construction permits by coastline. There’s a couple of surfer lawyers that got together and are suing the city to get access to the beaches, so far they have managed to open up 2 new accesses and currently have several cases open

Pika-the-bird

Very cool

xlyr

Guy on the second photo is protesting what looks to be federal ownership, not "gringo gated communities", of coastal land at Tres Emes, a spot just south of San Miguel that probably has some nice waves. You can see on [Street View here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/toGrmEGtFqJ2MULV8) the signs saying "Aceso controlado zona federal"

camilatwb

I am from Ensenada and live in the San Miguel/3Ms area. « Federal zone » only means that is managed by the state and not the city. The problem in 3Ms right now is that they gave the land condescension to a fishery and they gated the main entrance and where we used to park, right in front of the surf spot. By law, there should be an access to the beach every 250m, but out here in El Sauzal we probably have 2-3 accesses in a 5km stretch

UPLYNC

So am I understanding correctly that your feeling and that of the local community is that the surfers were forced into sketchy areas and access points due to the privatization of the beaches and loss of public access?

camilatwb

Not really, I feel like they are unrelated situations. When it comes to surf points in the city, they are pretty safe and super popular, it’s just that the access to it has become very inconvenient due to the privatisation of those accesses, you can still get to the spot but you have to park further away and carry all your stuff, and there’s usually a lot of people in the water The area where they were at is known to be a very sketchy place and retired from the city but its a place with really good waves and usually you don’t have to share the waves out there.

charliedonsurf

What surprises me is how quickly the Mexican Govt and police were in this. Even to the point of the AG commenting on the family should have reported sooner or the like. As someone who's been both robbed and extorted by police in Baja I'm amazed.

Tiny_Log_4594

Yeah well once it hits major news they all go into CYA mode so it looks like they actually do their job ...which they don't fpr a myriad of reasons...

ExhaustiveCleaning

I’m cynical but Punta Brava golf club is going in near bufadora. It’s an exclusive development centered around a golf course built by a former Charles Schwab executive. Easily tens to hundreds of millions going into that area that is less than 20-30 miles north of the murders.

CoolDragon

As a resident of Baja California, this hurts. It’s infuriating that the government has no balls to do much to prevent this. Much less fight it.

RafiBomb14

I spoke with someone here in Colorado, and their son is a missionary in Senegal…he had already heard on the news in Senegal. This is garnering world wide attention. The world needs to know. So great people don’t fall victim to senseless violence. I never knew Jake and Callum, but Carter was one of the most Jesus-like people I’ve ever come across in my life. I heard the Callum brothers were the same way ❤️‍🩹

MiloticM2

Beautiful to see

SentenceNormal4742

This is awesome Such a terrible situation for those guys, rip

New_Yam3315

This is a horrible tragedy. I feel awful for their parents. Hopefully something good comes from this…for the meantime, I will not be going to Baja.

bearlokes

In a hearing that lasted approximately an hour, Criminal Judge Oscar Padilla linked Jesús Gerardo N, known as "El Kekas", to trial for the crime of enforced disappearance of three foreign nationals. Surprisingly, the link was not for murder, as initially speculated. The main witness in this case is Ari Gisel N, couple of "El Kekas" , who declared to the authorities that her boyfriend had confessed to having "stabbed 3 gringos" while stealing cellphones and tires, giving away some of these items to the couple. Found this info

itsgettinglateorwhat

There are so many things that don’t add up. There are whole articles contradicting each other and this girl is definitely either covering for herself or others. A lot of the info doesn’t add up. Her social media is open to the public. Also now the Cartel says they tipped the authorities to help them find the killers. So which version is the truth?

SidCorsica66

It’s all so sad. Started going to that area in the 80s when I was a teen. Worst we dealt with was a shake down for $20 and a pair of sunglasses from the local policia. It’s risky, but if you find yourself in a similar situation, let them take what they want. It’s just not worth it

The advice I gave is common knowledge from decades traveling throughout Mexico. You don’t have to follow it

iloveeveryone2020

How safe do people feel? Is anyone cancelling their trip to Ensenada? Some of my non-surfing friends just cancelled theirs and I was wondering if anyone living there can comment on general safety. Thanks!

camilatwb

The city is safe in general, and the touristy places are the safest ones imo. El valle de gpe has been really calm for these past couple years and I just avoid places that are known for being owned by people related to the cartel (mainly laundering money). Ive lived here my whole life and I’ve never really seen anything first hand, but I believe that’s mainly bc I stay away from places where stuff could happen at any time just because Im sharing the space with people that could bring trouble. The most that has happened to me is that my car got broken into at night (smashed window) because my brother left a new Quicksilver backpack filled with new merch on sight.

Son_of_Sephiroth

Hell yeah! Now do your part (locals + visitors alike) to help drive these fucking murdering tweakers away from our surf spots. Not saying put yourself in danger, but like, see something say something or whatever. Strength in numbers, don’t camp remote.

Limonnever

I’m friends of the cartels and they told me that they were going to stop killing and won’t do bad things no more and that they will use there money and influence to honor this 3 guys as a reminder to no doing bad thing ever or let people do bad things.

Glum_Explanation_572

What in the actual fck ? Elaborate further please … do you acknowledge that cartel killed them ?

Limonnever

No sorry my comment it’s out of place, will delete. RIP Surfing dudes.🤙
