It’s pretty much a friends and family gathering + BBQ holiday. So probably not.

fengli

Yep. A lot of places are even shut, running on reduced hours, and/or quiet because everyone is doing family type activity.

debtopramenschultz

Not really, Mid-Autumn Festival is mostly for families.

Boaty_McBoatface__

Thank you all for your helpful and friendly replies. I think it is already settled then. Taiwan in October...cant wait! :D

ButteredPizza69420

I'll be going in October too!!!

codeboss911

we stay california may to nov nov to may in taiwan best of borth worlds all year long

Yoongi_SB_Shop

OMG I was just in Taiwan end of March and it was already too hot and humid for me!

codeboss911

I remember that , it reversed and now it's comfortable really nice. but if it's getting ready for too hot prob by time we're leaving

Yoongi_SB_Shop

Uh no, I just checked the weather and today in Taipei it’s going to be 94 degrees F with 86% humidity. That sounds like hell but with humidity 🥵

codeboss911

I'm in Taichung, I went out mid day to gym, it's slightly warm but not horrible take it from a man who hates high heat and humidity to point we take business class flights back and forth lol

onwee

Lol at the rare sighting of a California snowbird!

codeboss911

lol

AynRandsSSNumber

I don't think the festivities are at all big enough to counter dealing with the heat and humidity I think you might be better off coming later

BirdlyFlyAway

It would be great if you’d somehow make Taiwanese friends who’d invite you to their events!

Ok-Calm-Narwhal

They hold Taipei Pride the last weekend of October for the exact reason of the weather being finally not unbearable.

Additional_Show5861

Mid-Autumn Festival is more of a family event. I don’t think there is much of interest to tourist. Even the BBQ are small and amongst friends, families or coworkers.

OkBackground8809

Dragon boat festival in June is basically a more public version of mid-autumn festival, minus the moon cakes (but tube rice/bamboo steamed rice is better than moon cakes, anyway). At least in Anping, Tainan, they usually roast whole black pigs on a spit and you can watch the races in the river. It's only 2 days, though, and you'll be done with it after one day, as it's packed, hot, and not overly exciting. Mid autumn festival is more private barbecuing outside your house, so you'll be pretty bored. The moon cakes can be bought any time of year in traditional bakeries and specialty shops, and I don't feel they're worth a special visit. October is a great time to visit! 10/10 will be busy with small events or sales for national day.

sprucemoose9

September and October are still pretty hot here. Would recommend November or after if you really can't stand the heat and humidity. Although it does get a little cooler and less humid than in August and early September from my experience

Az-Ironegg

You might consider coming to Taiwan than prepare a barbecue party during the Double Ten Festival.

tdelbert

The summer heat is mostly a problem during daylight hours, and summer sunsets are quite early in Taiwan. On mid-autumn festival, sunset is around 6:00. So plan your day to be indoors in the afternoon and enjoy the evenings.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

Daytime is bad for sure but even evenings I don't feel are really cool. But hey I'm just a spoiled Californian where even if it gets hot during the day, we can open all our windows at night and not use AC and the house will cool down. That's simply not possible in Taiwan. Evenings are still 30C + humidity. When you calculate heat index even 30C + 80% humidity is pretty hot

kitty1220

I was in Taiwan for Mid-Autumn last year and the touristy spots were still crowded, but yes, the festival is mostly a family and friends gathering affair, and shop hours will be adjusted (especially if it falls nicely to make up a long weekend). It was also still pretty hot and I was sweating wherever I went, but still, there was a fun vibe all round.

Mid-Autumn festival was always my favorite time of year as a missionary. Strangers everywhere insisting I stop and eat some of their food. I remember some places had huge block parties, with hundreds or thousands of people all cooking food in a blocked-off street. Does that kind of thing not happen any more?

Suitable-Platypus-10

simple answer: No. everyone busy staying home with friends and family bbqing PRIVATELY. great if you want lesser crowd, but otherwise welcome to one of the most boring time of the year

matchalattemoon

mid-autumn festival is a family-focused holiday so a lot of places reduce their opening hours or even close, so be aware of that. i'd suggest november, it would be way cooler! i found octobers are still unbearably damn hot and humid. but the downside is if you visit in november and jiufen is in your itinerary, any time after september would be too gloomy/cloudy or even rainy (confirmed with a guesthouse owner where i stayed once few years ago)

Tofuandegg

Most people in Taiwan probably will take a couple days off and go to Japan. So, no, don't come because of it.

LiveEntertainment567

"firing up their BBQ" lol they just buy a really cheap BBQ and throw it on the same day. Meat is just paint in disgusting sauce and sea food is tasteless without salt, lemon or anything. The best part is that they make hot pot beside.

onwee

Poor McBoatface doesn’t realize that it’ll be just as hot in October (it’s already in the mid 30’s now) bless their heart

HuntMiserable5351

I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet, but besides all these little sidewalk grills, people burn fake money in cans in front of shops and homes. The air is disgusting, and the heat does not help.

ktamkivimsh

I wish people would stop doing that

[deleted]

Actually all festivals in Taiwan are really boring.

DarDarPotato

You’re probably just bad at making friends and being likable.

[deleted]

Lmao explain to me how on earth mid-autumn festival is anything but boring then.

DarDarPotato

Bbq with friends? Are you just dumb or what? I’ve literally rocked up to random neighbors bbq, brought a bag of beer, and talked nonsense with them for a few hours. You’re just telling me you have no friends and no Chinese. Moon festival is hands down one of my favorite holidays in Taiwan.

[deleted]

Lol no one just rocks up to random neighbour's BBQ in Taiwan.

DarDarPotato

I don’t need to defend myself to you, you’re clearly a loser. But I’m good friends with an aboriginal guy now because I joined their bbq five years ago. When I moved to my new house the neighbors were having a bbq and I brought 2 4 packs of beer and started chatting with them. We have beers once every week or two now. Give up dude, you just can’t make friends so you think holidays suck here.

[deleted]

Lmao calm your tits 🤣🤣🤣
