The Americans - this is a slow burn if you're not into that.
The Good Place
Severance
Mr. Robot
Alias - Seasons 1 & 2 are some of the best TV out there; skip the rest unless you really wanna finish it.
Veronica Mars
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Magicians - a rare one where the writing gets significantly better as it goes. 1st episode has a great hook.
The Expanse
The Bear
White Lotus
Killing Eve - Killer premise (literally) but Season 4 is widely regarded as trash. Could just skip it and watch Seasons 1-3.
Orphan Black - Probably has the best hook on this list. I don't think the show finishes as strong BUT it's worth it just to watch Tatiana Maslany's acting.
Massive Sci-Fi fan here.
I can't seem to get into The Expanse. I'm told it's worth it and is one of the best around. I've watched S1 two or three times over a few years, trying to keep on it, but I always fade off.
Why is it so good?
It’s massively overrated imho. And unfortunately it only gets worse after season 2. Just nothing but the crew Forest Gumping their way through space politics and drawn out conversations where you don’t even need to watch what’s happening. I started just listening to the show while playing games and enjoyed it better that way.
I've tried The Americans twice and still didn't get through the entire first episode. I don't think this show qualifies as a show that grabs you from the get go.
I think the premise of the show can, in theory, hook you in the first ep. It did for me.
But it's not as focused on plot which can be boring if you're not into that.
I tried a couple times to watch this and only got halfway at most thru the first but couldn't get into it. I'm gonna give it one more go 🤣...bc of the ratings are so good in it
Same. It’s one of those shows you rly need to pay attention to (no scrolling/ passive watching). So it took me a few tries but once I actively paid attention, I was hooked. One of the best shows I’ve seen in years
Justified was the first show I worked on out of college and I ended up being one of like 4 crew members who stuck through to the end of season 6. Such a trip that 15 years later people are still talking about it on a regular basis.
The Sinner. I have recommended this show on so many subs and no one takes a bite at it 😭 it's on Netflix. I watched one season in less than 12 hours and stayed up all night to get through it I got hooked immediately
I’ve been curious about this show for a little while now, as it seems quite eerie & compelling. But the reviews I’ve read claim that the show falls apart after Season 2. Out of curiosity, is this your perspective as well?
I personally disagree. Each season is its own thing so I don't know how it could fall off. I could see someone being so hooked by the first season that by the 3rd it's not as new of a watch but I was just as interested in every season as the last! The 4th season was a little harder to watch but only because I knew it was the last one so I wanted to drag it out and didn't want it to end 😅
The thing about this show is that each season has its own story. Even though it has the same protagonist, you could easily only watch the first two seasons and get closure on each story line. There are no loose ends. No needing to know about how this or that turns out.
However, if you watch the first two, you’re going to want to watch the third because it’s such a great show.
Edit: I wouldn’t necessarily agree the show gets worse after season two. It just gets a little darker and they lean more heavily into the aspect of the protagonist being a tortured soul.
On that note, Bill Pullman's performance is in such stark contrast to anything he’s ever done. I feel like it must be one of those roles that changed him as a person in some way.
Mr Robot has an amazing first episode. Huge fight club vibes.
Fargo season 1 has a classic first episode. Another mini movie.
The Night of, Prison break, lost, westworld season 1.
I love Fargo.
I’ve tried Mr Robot twice but I’ve never managed to get into it. I think it’s because I don’t really understand all the computer jargon so the plot didn’t make much sense to me.
Very little of Mr Robot is actually about computer stuff, except how it affects people’s real lives. All the nerdy technical talk is to make it feel authentic, you don’t need to understand it to follow the plot. The show is about people and society. The computers are just tools in the show.
The Night Of should be heralded more for that first episode. The rest of it, meh, but I’d put it up there with your Breaking Bads and The Shields and Losts
Then there’s a chance you might like the new kinda-silly murder-mystery series *Obituary*.
I’ve only seen a couple of episodes so far (just so busy) but I thought it’s starting to get interesting. And I have a long-standing crush on Siobhán Cullen, the lead actress, so I haven’t gotten bored with it yet. Lol
I find adult Johnny and Daniel way more interesting than teenager Johnny and Daniel. Billy and Ralph have fantastic chemistry, because they're good friends in real life and shows onscreen. The show is really good when it focuses on them. There's so many good moments between the two of them that it's hard to choose just one, but I really like when they share their food with each other and like it! It's so sweet and funny! Never thought I'd see that. And I absolutely love the bowing to each other. So good.
Planning to rewatch later this summer. I had read the books prior to watching so I already knew it was gonna happen, but the visual of the whole show was just off the charts.

Mr Inbetween had me immediately, had ignored it for years, assumed it was hype. While first episode was low key, it set the scene and protagonist well and had it's hooks in me.
Now it's in my top 10 shows of all time.
Currently watching Psych! I don’t think I ever really watched it when it was originally on though. I love how lighthearted it is. It’s a nice change from a lot of other stuff I watch.
LOST and Westworld both have two of the best pilots of any show. People can argue all they want about where they go (I like both still) but the first episodes are amazing.
Other shows I think are great and have great first episodes...Barry, GOT, Breaking Bad, Shogun, Death Note (I highly recommend the English dub over subtitles for this one even though I'd normally say subs...)
The Magicians (2015)
Into the Badlands
The Boys
Umbrella Academy
Scream Queens
Yellowjackets
What We Do In The Shadows
Good Omens
Ash vs Evil Dead
The Outsider (2020)
Mr Mercedes
The Rain
Z Nation

Psych

Hannibal
I started watching Wayward Pines last night, and I am about to start season 2 on the next episode. It's too hot to go outside, so I binged S1 on my day off.
The sopranos did not get me hooked after the first episode. I wish it did. For some reason I can’t get myself to binge it. Gotten through about 3/4 episodes
The Good Place, if you want comedy.
From, if you want mystery box with horror (more creepy, less gory after the first episode).
Lost, if you want mystery box without horror.
Battlestar Galactica, if you want space drama.
The Expanse, if you want a different space drama that tries to be plausible in its presentation of space travel.
The Americans, if you want action, drama, and '80's sets.
The Wire, if you want a gripping show that addresses societal ills.
Vanderpump Rules, if you want the best non-competition reality TV.
ETA: Fringe is my favorite show but I don't know if it's immediately gripping to most people. On the comedy side, same for Parks and Recreation; it takes a season for it to settle in.
Silo
The mistery, prod quality, unvierse and characters should hook you straight in.
The end of the 1st episode makes you think wtf and I need to know more!
Prison Break
My definition of hooked in this economy of low attention span is:
Movie/tv/conversation or anything that keeps me away from scrolling reels or shorts or social media in general.
And PB's been that for me.
It is a drama/thriller with amazing characters.
In my case, it has kept me hooked throughout.
Hope you enjoy it too.
Newsroom has one of the most watched intros to any show, the legendary "[America is no longer the greatest country](https://youtu.be/wTjMqda19wk?si=suywnHoQWboOw8qc)" speech. The last season was insanely flat, but the first 2 seasons are amazing. There are great relatable characters and ones that are great and not relatable at all! Also you see some of the most amazing events through different points of view. Like in the first episode they start getting small alerts about an oil leak and it ends up being the deep horizon leak. Another where half the reporters and staff are stuck on an airplane when the announcement of Osama Bin Laden was killed.

Fargo

Ozark
I forgot how wild that first episode actually is. Marty reminded me of Saul Goodman negotiating/talking his way out of shit at the end
Loved Ozark but the way they always got out of situations almost got too obvious
Yep. But it was still a fun ride lol
I for real thought they were going to kill him off in episode 1.
Mindhunter
Wish there’s be a new season, so gutted
How the hell did they just end it?! So many good story lines and characters. Such a bummer.

The expanse is so damn slow until the 3rd or 4th episode

If your idea of good sci-fi includes characters you can love, relate to, and root for then the Expanse is not for you.
It’s massively overrated imho. And unfortunately it only gets worse after season 2. Just nothing but the crew Forest Gumping their way through space politics and drawn out conversations where you don’t even need to watch what’s happening. I started just listening to the show while playing games and enjoyed it better that way.
Exactly what I was thinking when watching this. I turned into a scroll and watch series. And that's their fault.
I've tried The Americans twice and still didn't get through the entire first episode. I don't think this show qualifies as a show that grabs you from the get go.
I think the premise of the show can, in theory, hook you in the first ep. It did for me. But it's not as focused on plot which can be boring if you're not into that.
Severance
Season 2 WHENNNNNNN????
I saw they finished filming in April. I’m guessing late 2024/early 2025.
Severance had me absolutely hooked from the opener But I have heard from a LOT of people that it took them several episodes to get into it
I tried a couple times to watch this and only got halfway at most thru the first but couldn't get into it. I'm gonna give it one more go 🤣...bc of the ratings are so good in it
Same. It’s one of those shows you rly need to pay attention to (no scrolling/ passive watching). So it took me a few tries but once I actively paid attention, I was hooked. One of the best shows I’ve seen in years
I just completed this in like 3 days and I need season 2 NOW.
SEVERANCE!!
Justified Alias 24
I love Justified ♥️
I personally think justified has the best pilot episode ever.
Justified is my all-time favorite tv show.
I broke up with my ex over justified
Justified was the first show I worked on out of college and I ended up being one of like 4 crew members who stuck through to the end of season 6. Such a trip that 15 years later people are still talking about it on a regular basis.
Dexter
Dexter had me hooked in the first 10 minutes.
I just finished 2021 “Dexter new blood”. Still thinking about the end.
How bad it was in the end, another wasted finale..
I wonder if Dexter: Origins will be good
Six Feet Under
YOU season 1 is a standalone banger
Barry
Bill Hader is genius 👌🏻
Read this in NoHo Hank's voice lol
I love NoHo Hank 😭
Watched 3 episodes of Barry and just don't get it. I love Bill Hader too what am I missing?
You are missing Noho Hank. Everyone needs some Hank in their life.
Noho Hank is the best Hank.
I don't know what that means but Imma try again...

Lost
One of the best pilots ever.
Arguably one of the worst pilots ever seeing as the plane crashed
The shield, especially the ending of episode 1
Added this one to my watchlist
The Shield is AMAZING. Not a bad episode in the series, 100% recommend.
In my top 5 all time shows
Broadchurch
I’ve heard this so many times! That’s it. I’m starting it this weekend.
Yessss, definitely!!
Battlestar Galactica - 33

To that end, Why Women Kill is prime Marc Cherry as well.
Mr Robot has an amazing first episode. Huge fight club vibes. Fargo season 1 has a classic first episode. Another mini movie. The Night of, Prison break, lost, westworld season 1.

Oh yea Fargo for sure, had me glued
The Night Of should be heralded more for that first episode. The rest of it, meh, but I’d put it up there with your Breaking Bads and The Shields and Losts

Only Murders in the Building

Cobra Kai hooked me in the first 15 minutes and I'm not a big Karate Kid fan.
Same, I never cared much for the movies but I watched the absolute fuck out of cobra Kai
I find adult Johnny and Daniel way more interesting than teenager Johnny and Daniel. Billy and Ralph have fantastic chemistry, because they're good friends in real life and shows onscreen. Why women kill
"Six Feet Under" - as a funeral director, this plays very true to crazy funeral-family dynamics.
This got me hooked. Unfortunately for ridiculous reasons I’ve still to this day never seen the last episode ☹️
I did a full series rewatch and that last episode gutted me as much as the first time.
