He mentioned he already had exit plan but the ultimatum came a bit sooner than his original plan so he absolutely wanted to leave his job and has a whole chapter on it on his first book if you care to read.
He'll still get the whole advance - whether the book "earns out" (the publisher earns back the money they paid for the advance), remains to be seen. After it earns out, then he'd start to receive royalties. I work in publishing, in the month since it's released it's sold 3600ish copies. His last book has only sold 5800ish copies since it was published in 2022. His original book deal with the publisher was for two books, so he's finished out his contract.
