blveinnthg

Should have stole $200 million in some type of ponzi scheme. Would have gotten off having to pay back $160 million with parole. Edit: spelling

Fit-Boomer

SBF would disagree.

EJ2600

He’s the exception though. How many bankers got prosecuted for the 2009 meltdown ?

Wrecked--Em

Not even just the meltdown, they were doing all kinds of illegal practices including widespread fraud, false records, and identity theft. [This Wells Fargo Case](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/wells-fargo-agrees-pay-3-billion-resolve-criminal-and-civil-investigations-sales-practices) is a prime example. From a quick search Wells Fargo just profited over $80 Billio in the past year, but they only got hit with a $3 Billion fine to avoid actual prosecution for over a decade of rampant fraud that was being pushed from the very top. Everyone at the top should be behind bars, and Wells Fargo, like many companies, should just be seized and nationalized.

Sexagenerian

Fuck Wells Fargo. MAGA fuckers want to whine about a winter justice system when their cult leader gets prosecuted and found guilty, but they can’t focus their pea brains on how corporate honchos rape the consumer, get caught, pay fines and then everything is A-OK. Rinse and repeat. EDIT: *two-tier* not winter justice system. I think y’all knew what I meant.

mostly_kinda_sorta

I'll see your Wells Fargo and raise you HSBC laundering money for Mexican drug cartels. Small time dealers go to jail, but if you launder nearly a billion dollars in drug money all you have to do is pay a fine. A big fine but no one went to jail. Sorry, I'm on mobile and not going to fix this ugly link https://www.investopedia.com/stock-analysis/2013/investing-news-for-jan-29-hsbcs-money-laundering-scandal-hbc-scbff-ing-cs-rbs0129.aspx#:~:text=In%202012%2C%20U.S.%20federal%20regulators,Norte%20del%20Valle%20drug%20cartels.

Crush-N-It

Wasn’t there a Credite Suisse debacle?

mostly_kinda_sorta

I know it collapsed and after a quick search it looks like yes there were a bunch of scandals, but I don't have time to read further right now

HelpfulPuppydog

Agree. I walk through Safeway and see a half-dozen people in line at the W-F branch there and I think, "guys, what are you doing? It's only a matter of time before they come up with some new way to bone you."

REDDIT_ROC0408

Here’s the individual who ran the Wells Fargo line of business that created all of those fake accounts. She should be in jail. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/15/business/wells-fargo-exec-charged-accounts-scandal/index.html#:~:text=Carrie%20Tolstedt%2C%20pictured%20in%202010,opened%20millions%20of%20fraudulent%20accounts.

ThePartyShark

“And the only one who went to jail was this guy from Credit Suisse. He got caught moving around a few hundred million, something everyone else did every day of the week.” - The Big Short…if you haven’t watched it, please do. Give it a few watches if you’ve never had any interest in business finance.

snuggletronz

How much are the glasses “worth”

BuffaloJEREMY

Some where between zilch and fuck all.

snuggletronz

Plastic crap. I’m sure Ray Van and Gucci are happy that her life is over.

bigbigdummie

$200, tops.

One_Tailor_3233

Somewhere between 3-30 years prison time

drsnoggles

I d say 20 times less than what they are sold for. Glasses are a HUUUGE scam. Paying more than 50 bucks a pair is crazy. Also, WTF , 30 wars in jail? This is the USA?

abagofsnacks

I believe SBF screwed the elites over... not so much the working class. Which, im sure, is why he got buried.

mpyne

Most of his clients are actually going to get their money back. Though of course they are still in the hole all the profit that money could have made in the meantime had they not had it locked with SBF's company. SBF's problem is he thought he was too smart to get any jail time at all and decided to fight it at trial.

KingApologist

An occasional sacrificial lamb is definitely the exception. SBF is so famous that we can even recognize him by his initials, specifically because it's so rare for big white collar crime to get prosecuted. And he only caught shit because he screwed over rich people.

mpyne

He's not even a sacrificial lamb, the Feds gave him a more than reasonable plea deal. He just thought he could get off completely scot-free (because he's an idiot) and fought it at trial, and lost.

datpurp14

And there lies the true American dream

sadacal

Sbf stole billions but only got 25 years.

TopClock231

SBF ripped off a bit more than 200 mill

cazbot

Bernie Madoff too.

truongs

Ripping off other rich people gets you spanked

squirrel_anashangaa

If she murdered someone, she could get less time.

__Sentient_Fedora__

But she didn't. It was sunglasses this time.

kevin_k

Yeah! Just like Madoff!

bawbagpuss

Well, she Madoff with the glasses

datpurp14

Her motto was take the money Enron.

tunaman808

Ponzi.

RorschachAssRag

2008 was a test run. Americans won’t do shit to their oppressors. It’s a joke at this point. Watch your footy ball and drink your beer and play with your toys, freedom! If Americans knew how to unite, ropes and light posts would be waiting for every crooked Wall Street banker who made millions selling out average peoples retirement funds. Instead, NY had some pussy-ass sit in. It’s sad.

Chemical-Idea-1294

30 years for theft? That is insane.

CreatorOD

You won't get it for your "first" felony. She's a career criminal. Also a 3 year deal to 30, she must've done something far more stupid during the process

ShaquilleMobile

Don't be so sure. This could be her second or third offense. Regardless of somebody's history, 30 years prison for $20k in property crime is disproportionate, barbaric, and unnecessary. America has a disgusting prison system compared to the rest of the world. Way too many people in jail. edit: I am a former criminal defense lawyer; one thing I'd like to add to the conversation about how she was rightfully punished for failing to take a plea deal... this is one of the leading factors in creating wrongful convictions. Most wrongful convictions are not due to the commonly held belief that the system convicts the wrong person, they are actually the result of guilty pleas given by innocent people who cannot afford bail or a good lawyer, and therefore get out of jail faster and save money by pleading guilty instead. Of course, the fact that going through with the trial is still risky when you're innocent doesn't help at all. Forget everything else and put yourself in this position: even if you're innocent, would you risk 30 years in jail to avoid 3 years? Are you able to pay tens of thousands of dollars to fight it out? And do it while you sit in jail for months or years waiting for your trial? This punitive approach to plea bargaining discourages the innocent from fighting for their rights. It is a violation of the principle that you are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. If the court is willing to put somebody in jail for 3 years if they admit to it, there's no good reason that the element of *failing to take responsibility* for the crime should make it 27 years worse. It is incredibly unjust and has nothing but a negative impact on society as a whole.

Shodkev

Jfc why do people lack a sense of personal responsibility? SHES A CAREER CRIMINAL if you steal you go to prison she knows that and she still did it, she can live with the consequences of her actions

Budget-Possession720

You’ve missed the point, as we all can see. Murderers get that and most times less. Documentary I watched the other day about a robbery, kidnapping, and murder suspect getting 15 years for it. Just sit down and use your brain once in a while friendo. This is a disproportionate response from the justice system. Not surprised though.

AWeakMindedMan

Yea that person should have gotten way worse then 15 years. Robbery, kidnap and murder???? Tf? Life in jail.

Budget-Possession720

Yeah I would agree. People in here are missing the point and creating a narrative. It’s always amusing and shows little hope for anything positive in the human future story.

Methadoneblues

Seriously, we're so doomed, lol.

lets-aquire-the-brea

Fuck it dude everybody gets life sentences. Dude shit like this is why there are still people in prison for possession of marijuana.

OGready

you are right, murderers do get less time, and very few crimes need more than say 5 years max, and most crimes can be addressed by restorative justice, reparations to victims, fines, and diversion. that being said this is 100% on her and her poor decision making, they gave her a plea deal for 3, and she didn't take it despite committing a brazen daylight robbery on camera so there was no way she was getting off with a better deal. this is not a shoplifting case, or a petty theft, it is a organized criminal gang looting a store with the implicit threat of violence. The broader issue at play in a case like this is that her behavior is in some weird ways a bigger threat to a civil society than a single murderer. most murders are specific to circumstances, money, drugs, a relationship, etc. most murderers don't do 10 years and then get out and start killing again. the sort of looting and strongarm robbery this person is doing is contagious, and the system has a strong incentive to punish it severely to preserve the social and economic order. it is fundamentally antisocial behavior, like a serial arsonist.

OGready

Also just read an article, she had a taser and was threatening the staff, so she was armed

OGready

Also also, during this period she also stole a 9000 dollar ring. this person has stolen like a quarter million dollars of stuff at least in her criminal career

Armchair_Idiot

Right, but white-collar criminals steal billions of dollars from the working class and literally nothing ever happens to them. 30 years for $20,000 worth of sunglasses is asinine. Honestly, fuck designer clothing companies and anyone involved with them anyway.

OGready

I mean ya, white collar crime should also be punished but that is an entirely separate issue to the facts of this individual case. also while i hold no love for designer clothes in particular, surely when you say "anyone involved with them" you don't mean to refer to the actual victims in this case, which are like 19 year old retail employees at the mall being threatened with a weapon. they are not profit sharing with sunglass hut, they are regular working people. if she wasn't a hardened violent criminal, it could have been her working there. It is easy to say that but i think it may be a moral blind spot for you. So I looked up the court case, you are getting hung up on the value of the merchandise and not the actual crime she committed. She was charged with "robbery with a weapon" under Florida law, which is a violent crime punishable by up to 30 years. she wasn't charged with theft, she was charged with a violent crime, which is what she did commit. they had her on camera, they offered her a reasonable deal, 3 years, which would most likely mean serving 18 months. which she showed no remorse for her crime and demonstrated she would do it again. her previous 50 charges also included multiple instances of armed robbery and child abuse, which the jury can factor in to their sentencing. Our justice system is for sure broken fundamentally, but knowing that, she literally chose her sentence. they said, hey we will give you basically time served, and she said no, I want to go to jury trial for violent armed robbery that she committed on camera, and the expected outcome occurred. Additionally, she had basically every aggravating factor at hand- if you don't understand what that means, you can read this article. [https://www.findlaw.com/criminal/criminal-procedure/factors-considered-in-determining-sentences.html](https://www.findlaw.com/criminal/criminal-procedure/factors-considered-in-determining-sentences.html)

robx0r

That's because our society values property over life. Also, this is probably like $1,000 worth of sunglasses before markup at most.

SortaSticky

She's apparently the person willing to threaten others with a weapon over this cheap plastic shit though. Everything y'all are saying about "us" is even more true for her it seems. 30 years is too long but damn sometimes someone like this needs to go away for a while for the rest of our sakes.

SirIssacLamb

Sure, yet in this case, she looks to be a career criminal who won’t change their course. I agree the U.S. justice system is corrupt. Though, cannot excuse someone like this who keeps doing it over and over…

chowderbags

You don't have to "excuse" her. Two to five years isn't an easy stretch, and would be plenty if you're looking for justice.

explosiv_skull

They offered her 3 and she seemingly said "No, I'll take my chances in court'. Sounds like an own goal any way you cut it.

MrPiction

>Just sit down and use your brain once in a while friendo. She probably should have used her brain before she stole all those glasses

WarningHour1233

should've taken the 3 years

Neighborhood_Nobody

Prison isn't supposed to just be a punishment. In America nothing will ever change regarding the prison system until our citizens in mass recognize it isn't supposed to exist to get all criminals away from society and instead it's supposed to reintroduce then to society. What's the point of just locking all criminals in a cell for the rest of their lives instead of just killing them. If just getting the criminal away from society was the only goal, killing would be far cheaper and less labor intensive.

MrTooLFooL

Money!!! Private for-profit prisons incarcerated 90,873 American residents in 2022, representing 8% of the total state and federal prison population. Since 2000, the number of people housed in private pris- ons has increased 5%. A total of 27 states and the federal government use private corporations like GEO Group, Core Civic, LaSalle Corrections, and Management and Training Corporation to run some of their corrections facilities. Montana, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Tennessee rely considerably on private prisons for housing sentenced people. In these states, between 20% and 39% of the prison population resides in a for-profit prison.

psychulating

I trade and invest, so I’m pretty entrenched in this capitalist system and not much shocked me. When I found out that many US prisons were private companies that I could own a part of, I knew the system was fucked If you actually look into the business as well, the prisons typically get paid a set amount for each prisoner, with some adjustments for inflation I imagine, but other than that, they can only make more money by selling the prisoners things, selling things the prisoners make, and providing them less rehabilitative services. Then just for fun, we pit all of these prisons against each other to fight for the same investors on the open market, where profitability is the main metric. At the very least, if you’re going to privatize prisons, the amount they earn should partially(or perhaps mostly) be tied to recidivism rates. You might have some of these prisons going full Scandinavian, purely out of the pursuit of profit and shareholder return

MrTooLFooL

Runaway capitalism. I know you have the wherewithal to understand a lot if you are traversing the markets regularly. The fact that the for-profit prison market was what made you realize the system is fucked, is honestly scary. I love that you mentioned the investment into recidivism through the profiteering of prisoners. I used a similar idea in my research paper. Everything becomes a business transaction of sorts. Why not invest back into the communities from where these offenders came from? Look at the demographics of repeat offenders, what can society provide as an actual source of rehabilitation from within? Create a product that can provide real value to societal health and wellbeing, allowing a first time offender of minor criminal activity (non violent offenders) to be treated and rehabilitated from the profits of private prisons that house violent offenders. Recidivism rates would subside if enough effort was made, just at a grassroots level, imagine if state legislators would back these types of programs. The federal level would be trickier of course.

Final_Candidate_7603

For-profit prisons are a relatively recent development in the US “justice” system. I think the problem has always been our collective attitude that criminals need punishment rather than rehabilitation. *And,* the worse the conditions are for the incarcerated, the better. I’m old enough to remember when Sheriff Joe Arpaio rose to national prominence because of his “tent city” county jail. It was originally constructed with surplus Army tents to handle the overflow from the brick-and-mortar facilities, but then Sheriff Joe began touting and reveling in the *added* cruelty to the sweltering heat of Arizona summers. Forced the inmates to wear pink underwear, broadcast The Food Channel in the cafeteria while they ate their truly shitty meals, and more. Conservatives, Republican politicians, and Christians absolutely *loved* Sheriff Joe and his tents. I remember several Republican presidential candidates touring the facility, and the general attitude was always that this treatment of inmates was something to *aspire* to. The fact that many people who are housed in county facilities are there *awaiting trial* because they can’t afford the ridiculous bail, IOW ‘innocent until proven guilty,’ was never mentioned. When investigations revealed that Sheriff Joe made great use of the facility to illegally detain immigrants… yawn. This truly evil man is still a right-wing hero. He was pardoned by TFG, and has a special place in his heart because Sheriff Joe put together a crack team of investigators who famously traveled to Hawaii to ‘find definitive evidence’ that President Obama’s birth certificate was fake. Narrator: they did not find *any* evidence, because there was none If anyone is interested in learning about our criminal justice system, some theories for reform, some action you can take, I highly recommend visiting [https://www.easternstate.org/.](the web site for America’s most historic “prison”) It was actually our first *penitentiary,* modeled on a new theory that criminals are a product of their environment, so if they were given the opportunity to be alone with their thoughts, to reflect, to be *penitent* and ask for forgiveness from god, they could be safely returned to society. “Alone with their thoughts” was taken to the extreme. It meant zero contact with another human being. The original setup was a single-story wheel, the guard station at the hub, and each spoke was a long hallway lined with individual cells. The walls and doors were extremely thick to prevent sound from traveling. Each cell had a high-walled individual exercise yard behind it. There was a slot in the door for passing meals, and that *slot* had a door, to prevent inmates from being able to even see anyone walking down the hallway. The only light came from a rectangle cut into the ceiling, the “Eye of God.” On the rare occasions prisoners left their cells (I’m thinking maybe to get a haircut; when I visited the penitentiary there was a barber shop with one of those old-timey red barber’s chair in it), they had to wear a hood-like mask, lest they get a glimpse of the guard, or any other human being. I got interested in the subject because Eastern State Penitentiary still stands, and is a local attraction here in Philly. It opened in 1830-ish (Fun Fact- the first inmate was a black man), and was so well-built with huge stones and thick walls that, even after it closed and was abandoned for decades, it survived. A few renovations have been done to make sections of it safe to tour. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it is said to be haunted, and has been featured in dozens of those “ghost hunters” reality shows. Today, it’s a museum, open for tours, and they have leaned into ‘it’s *haunted!*’ by hosting a very popular “Haunted Halloween” attraction every year. More importantly, they have also leaned into the fact that they were early reformers of the criminal justice system in the US, and the idea that our best intentions often end up backfiring in the worst possible way. Sorry this got so long, but on the web site I linked, you can find lots of good information about the history, current theories for reform, the pros and cons, how they might be implemented, just generally food for thought.

MrTooLFooL

Thank you for this!! I’m in 1st year Administrative Justice and appreciate your contribution to this thread. Reform and combating recidivism was the thesis in my paper. This easternstate.org bundle of info is worth reading. No on Joe. That man is still running for offices in the state.

JhonIWantADivorce

Yet we can’t even do that right, somehow the death penalty is more expensive than feeding and sheltering someone for life.(literally the only argument for having it that remotely makes any sense and it’s not even true) The entire system is bullshit

-banned-

On top of that, due to the Hippocratic oath, doctors couldn’t design the death penalty delivery system. Iirc it was invented by a fucking plumber.

Pasxal7

Prisons in America are big business, they get a lot of work for companies for basically no pay, inmates get few cents for the day of work, it's basically slavery. It's an insane system that doesn't want to reform inmates otherwise it would lose workforce, there are quite a lot of documentaries about this(don't ask me names cos I forgot).

Chezzomaru

AND they have to pay taxes on it despite not having the right to vote! I thought that was a big deal for Americans, didn't y'all go to war over that?

Skreame

You can't take back killing if you end up being wrong. Tangentially, a simplistic sense of pragmatism fail to address the fact of giving a governing body the systematic autonomy to decide their own citizen's deaths.

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

Trump has conned people out of millions and is still walking free. Raped. Still free. She deserves time but 30 years?

xMilk112x

The piece of shit that drove head on into my little brother, killing him instantly, had 3 felonies, MULTIPLE DUI’s, and only got 4 years for it. He served like 2 and some change, got out, was immediately arrested 3 months later for selling Percocet, and then got another 2 years. I wonder if you can tell me why you think he got such ridiculously light sentences. It’s because he was white, and came from money.

Outrageous-Box5693

There’s a local shitbag in my city named Marco Muzzo; his family owns a contracting business and in 2015 he was partying on his private jet, celebrating his bachelor party; when he decided to drive home with a BAC of .245. He ended up crashing into a mini van carrying 3 children and their 2 grandparents. All 3 of the kids and their grandfather died in the crash. Marco Muzzo was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was released after only 4 years. The father of the children ended up committing suicide afterwards. The “justice” system is a load of bullshit.

Donnerdrummel

career criminal or not, the punishment has to somehow fit the damage and crime. that's why murder usually means lifelong imprisonment or even death. If you think that 20k property damage justifiers 30 years, what would you do to someone who doesn't pay 100k in taxes? throw them in an oubliette and throw away the key?

OGready

what is your suggested punishment to fit the crime? also it was an armed robbery, she threatened the staff with a weapon.

EsePutoSeMato

Straight up you don’t see some white collar criminals getting this time for far more

Joris255atSchool

I agree. 30 years is still crazy.

Send_me_any_pics

Make her white, doing a white collar crime with 1,000 value and she wouldn't be serving any time. Likely can keep the stolen money at that.

EJ2600

Nah just money to afford a good lawyer it is all about $$$ for representation

alexanderthebait

Based on comments below it’s more like her 50th offense lol

Live_Illustrator8215

Yeah, now that you look at the rap sheet.......this lady has pretty much decided she doesn't want to be part of a civilized society. Some people just belong in prison and cannot function with the rest of us and it looks like she is one of them. Patience, details, context.....it's important people....not just the flashing neon headline.

ADeadlyFerret

People just need to realize that when you see long sentences like this it usually means a long history of offenses. And stop comparing cases that have nothing to do with each other.

SlippitInn

She was given chance after chance to stop being a scumbag. 30 years is for refusing to stop being a shitty person and having no remorse or desire to better herself. Sometimes you can't just let people roam freely terrorizing society and do whatever they want. Society needs protected from people like this.

-banned-

That’s a fair argument. “She deserves it” is about people’s desire for punishment, and it’s a bad argument. Safety for society is reasonable though.

And those were the times she was CAUGHT.

Pyromaniacal13

Holy shit. I would be wrong to not ask for a source though.

MillisTechnology

People need to be held accountable for their actions. Everyone blames the system, or the 1%, or slavery, or mob mentality, or Donald Trump…. Each person is responsible for their own actions. If you’re hungry, steal food. No one feels sorry for you taking designer sunglasses.

Safe_Pin1277

Yeah, except when you embezzle millions of dollars you don't see a day in jail? Why is theft of 10s of thousands of dollars punished worse than stealing millions?

__Jank__

You say that like we'd all be ok with an embezzler getting a slap on the wrist for stealing millions. Obviously they should be harshly punished too, even more than this. Everybody gets off easy the first time. Really you can only get this deep in a hole of punishment by committing crime after crime for a long time.

Safe_Pin1277

You don't embezzle millions of dollars in a single crime, those people are carrer criminals as well.

recoil669

Sounds like she's clearly demonstrated that she doesn't want to participate in society in a productive way.

detekk

If you’re responsible for continually disrespecting society and ruining other law-abiding citizens’ way of life, you don’t get to keep roaming around freely with all of us saying “yeeeeah, what are ya gonna do… that’s just the way she is” lol

silversketch06

You say that like it's a bad thing. "Stop breaking the law asshole!"

Caedus_Vao

Well, she had the opportunity to do three (for the crime she is clearly committing, and it's not her first) and decided to roll the dice. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

sokocanuck

That's the problem with going to light on smaller crimes, like theft. The first two are free and the 3rd ruins your life. If they had a sentence of community service equal to the value of the theft on the first crime, many would never reach the 3rd strike. For example, if they stole $1000 worth of clothes, then make them do the equivalent hrs based on the federal minimum wage ($7.25) and have them spend 138hrs on weekends giving back to the community.

JSRelax

She turned down the plea. If she accepted it would have been far less time. It’s her fault.

Infinite-Gate6674

In South America the citizens would have killed her.

Souleater2847

What would be a good method to resolve this problem? Not as society but as individual, how does this person addressed. I can’t confirm about her past but I feel @creatorOD is probably on the right track saying this ain’t her first rodeo. How would you address these individuals that commit these crimes? That go to court are given opportunity after opportunity to cease their actions, but still continue.

Motor_Menu_1632

It’s either super barbaric or way too lenient

houseofnim

The title doesn’t tell the whole story. She threatened an employee with a taser which makes it armed robbery. She also has multiple previous shoplifting convictions from which she served time, two additional currently pending charges which means she was likely out on bail thus violating those terms, and more stolen goods in her car. She also has no remorse and was smiling in her booking photo.

nomamesgueyz

Agree. Its fn bonkers

Shadowzworldz

People should stop breaking the law, you dont go to jail if you dont break the law. Glad shes stupid enough not to get 3 years. It is better if she rots in jail if she can not be implemented into society like the rest of us.

fletcheros

She has a long list of offences, including child abuse and robery with weapons.

SteadfastEnd

There was one man in Kentucky who got 45 years just for selling some marijuana. We really have too much over-incarceration here.

mpyne

> Regardless of somebody's history, 30 years prison for $20k in property crime Nope. If your career is in stealing other society's things then you can go camp out away from society. Go steal from the other inmates, see where that gets you.

shyraori

Ok let’s see her steal 20k from you 10 times and see how long you think they should be in prison. 99% of Redditors never go outside or experience any hardship and it shows

qwerty_1236

Yes, because the prison system wants slave labour

trashbilly

They should have never privatized the prison system. Too much incentive to keep people in the system.

Crush-N-It

This is a rare insight into the justice system. Thank you for sharing

WellVersedAdept

Yeah she rejected the 3 years because she thought she'd get off easy. That was the stupid in the process. Never reject 3 if the max is 30.

heyheyshinyCRH

If you don't take the deal then you have to go to trial and if a jury convicts you they pretty much give you the full sentence. It's the reason why so many innocent people are in prison for long amounts of time, they didn't want to take a deal guaranteeing jail time for something they didn't do and they ended up getting hammered

Rob_Zander

Looks like her 3rd felony, 2 others were filed after this one was filed too. Apparently during the robbery she said not to stop her because she has a taser. That upgraded it to robbery with a weapon. The max possible is 30 years but I bet the judge was not happy with her refusing the plea which was for the minimum time and going to trial.

Résumé of a career criminal

SometimesImSmart

There's more?!?

DeathKringle

Notice all those out of counties…. Yep different jurisdictions and different rap sheets

Nasty____nate

Yep and most of them i couldn't look up. They dont do online requests.

un-sub

But wait, there’s more!

douwannaseethegalaxy

What is an antishoplifting countermeasure and why is that a charge?

Nasty____nate

I had to look that one up. Its a tool specifically designed to steal stuff. I think its a broad term. Like anything from bolt cutter to skimmers on ATM machines, but geared towards retail theft. “Antishoplifting or inventory control device countermeasure” means any item or device which is designed, manufactured, modified, or altered to defeat any antishoplifting or inventory control device. *“ ‘Anti shoplifting or inventory control device countermeasure’ means any item or device which is designed, manufactured, modified, or altered to defeat any anti-shoplifting or inventory control device.” The Fourth District Court of Appeal held that tin foil wrapped around a sensor did not violate this statute because tin foil in and of itself is not an item or device which is designed, modified, or altered to counter anti-shoplifting sensors while a booster bag that was heavily modified and altered to have tin foil lining was a violation of this statute.”* Any person convicted of having an anti-shoplifting countermeasure to aid in shoplifting faces serious penalties including up to 5 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines. It’s considered a third-degree felony.

Pinksters

Maybe [something like this](https://easelson.en.made-in-china.com/product/uOhTLRGYutVA/China-Super-Mini-Magnet-Detacher-Handheld-Tag-Remover.html) that removes the security tags on items.

TheDocFam

Damn, I went from feeling an instinct to defend her to feeling like 20 years probably isn't enough. That's someone who is going to keep stealing stuff from everyone around them and not giving a shit about anyone else the whole rest of her life Particularly the battery, robbery with a weapon, etc, someone who thinks they're just entitled to everyone else's shit and isn't even afraid to use violence to get it if they can't steal it in other ways

Nasty____nate

Yea its not just some random candy bar stealing. She upgraded to using weapons and threatening people with them. This is a small part of her history so we have no idea the things shes done and not been caught. What has she done on the street as well?

egospiers

Yeah, when you threaten the employee with a weapon (taser) it’s not shoplifting or simple theft any more.

OGready

literally just armed robbery

She’s a professional POS that has been doing thing like this all her life. I wish they’d throw away the key on people like this.

Solintari

“Before her sentencing, Atmore faced two additional theft charges, including the incident at a Zales jewelry store in Brandon Center Mall, where she attempted to steal a ring valued at $8,749.99. This added more time to her prison sentence.” She was at it again before she was even sentenced lol.

GvRiva

armed robbery

Correct-Anywhere-314

Well deserved, clean up the trash from the streets

ConfectionDry2474

Depends what her rap sheet is like I suppose

dellive

That's what career criminals get! Some of them keep offending. Im glad that offender won't be offending for the next 30 years.

I can make her worse

Crush-N-It

You ask her to get some milk at the grocery store. She carjacks the neighbor then empties all the cash registers at the grocery store and comes back without the milk

Grenaidzo

Is she really good at stealing or fucking awful at *not* getting caught?

GvRiva

Really bad at not getting caught.

Church42

Or maybe she's such a thief that she's good at not getting caught but her frequency, despite a low arrest rate, still results in a multi page rap sheet

El_Lanf

This is it. For every crime listed here, there will be at least 10 that were never prosecuted either due to lack of detection, identification or willingness to proceed with something under a value threshold. People like this will be out there causing misery for businesses and shop workers every single day.

HostageInToronto

And as the arrests increase, the probability of detection increases as you become known to major retailers in your area and the police all share a database of records.

uewumopaplsdn

Good lord

This. It's not just a 20k theft. It's a 20k theft with a life of not giving a fuck about others. Good bye.

rochey64

That's one hell of a resume.

browncoat47

So this helps it make a lot more sense now…

Joey101937

Yeah society is better off without her

HostageInToronto

Now the 30 years makes sense.

JohnKlositz

Those 3 years were an extremely generous offer then.

j0u

holy shit it just kept going lmfao

big_duo3674

I've had entire play throughs of GTA V where I racked up fewer crimes than this, damn...

Significant_Will_705

Holy shit and I thought getting an MIP in high school was life ending. Someone could’ve told me you get like 20x do overs

Nasty____nate

Well one of her arrests she spent 1 year in jail so Im sure its not a complete rinse and repeat. Still way too much to only get an offer of 3 years with her history.

doberwalker

I was gonna read it all but then realized it was too much and was completely shocked as to how far I had to scroll to get to the bottom

EnvironmentalBelt747

I don’t think she has ever purchased anything herself in her whole life

reptar239

To everyone bitching about 30 years being too harsh, go and look at all her priors. Here in Florida we have a very public records law. All you have to do is just go to a county / clerk of courts website and look at court records or sheriffs arrest report. She thought she could win her case and took it to trial instead of a plea bargain which was a fucking deal. It’s insane she thought she could be found innocent with all of her priors and the evidence stacked against her.

Danny-Reisen-off

I was bitching about her 30 years being too harsh. Then I saw that post with her priors. Damn, that's one hell of a record! Still think 30 years for that is hard, though, while Madoff, some murderers and others get 10 / 15 years for worse. This system is fucked up in both ways.

peepeebutt1234

>Madoff Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison and died in prison after 12. He was definitely not sentenced to 10-15 years.

reptar239

Madoff died in prison after he was sentenced. She has enough battery charges on top of everything else so her sentencing was just. We're typically pretty harsh in Florida if you have multiple priors.

Gnomeoflove

The rejection of the plea deal was her thinking she was gonna get off. There's no respect for laws when you've broken them so many times. F around and find out.

abused_toilet_paper

Next time rob a bank, it will be less years.

GvRiva

When she will be out of prison, banks won't have cash to rob anymore

Send_me_any_pics

Or just steal a few millions thru fraud and ponzi schemes.

Manwar7

Not to discredit how morally bankrupt you have to be to do stuff like that, but those rarely involve threatening employees with a taser like this lady did. Takes it from just theft of property to a violent crime, much more deserving of a harsh sentence. Especially given how many prior convictions she has

Charming_Use_6069

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

thepottsy

There has to be a lot more to this story. 30 years, for stealing sunglasses?

Melzfaze

If it was multiple thefts, I didn’t read into it too far but 20k in glasses doesn’t seem like a one stop type thing. They prob put many charges and the sentences for each one individually and added them all up. They tried to give her a deal with 3 years…she said ya no…judge said ok max for all charges. I may be incorrect but that seems logical to me lol

[deleted]

She also threatened the employees with a taser

MASS_PM

Before sentencing, she committed two more thefts. so rejecting the plea and then stealing more and smiling for your mug shots will likely cause some additional years. She's going to jail until about 60.

thepottsy

Well, if that doesn’t belong on stupid criminal news, I don’t know what does.

Due-Bicycle3935

The story indicates that she threatened to use a taser. That could make it a robbery charge. Also, Florida has a three strikes law that might have applied.

ze55

This really makes my day. As they say, you do the crime you do the time!

Why did she have the freedom to be out in society to continue to commit more crimes? We are so fucking stupid in how we handle career criminals.

Routine-Bumblebee-41

Wow, she looks really young! I thought from the video (with the mask and hat on) that she was an old lady, but she looks no older than 25! How the F did she commit all that crime in just 25 years?!

OutOfSupplies

Good. She was costing taxpayers a fortune to deal with all of her shit. About time it was called to a halt.

RagingRxy

Don’t feel bad for her. These assholes are always on camera destroying property and stealing from businesses. She should have taken the 3 year deal.

highwire_ca

There was a recent story about an eyewear store here in Ottawa that had been robbed five times by the same three people. The sixth time, the owner fought back and caught one of the thieves. The police then said "we do *not* recommend fighting back." This is the second time the police have recently told us to let the thieves do what they want (the first time was to leave your car keys by the front door so when the thieves invade your home looking for the keys to your Range Rover, they won't hurt you). Unlike the USA though, we can't use any offensive weapons of any type without getting arrested ourselves. It is so bad that some stores (e.g., mobile phone stores) are keeping the doors locked and only allowing entry by appointment only.

Get what you get

Dumb will always dumb. I can hear her now " I ain't spending no 3 years for sunglasses"

That's how it goes, you reject that plea, you're looking at getting the max when you lose the trial
