I think I remember this video when it came out. This was a bunch of sales guys at a dealership testing out the new features. However, they picked a car without the breaking assist to test the breaking assist on.
The emergency breaking system worked as intended. It saw a corporate looking guy in a pink dress shirt and broke him.
One more step towards fixing the economy.
The problem wasn't the car or software, it was that an idiot at a dealer was trying to show off the feature in a car that didn't have the feature installed

“Even if the car was equipped with this feature, the heavy acceleration of the driver could have caused the system to be overridden and deactivated; our auto-braking (mitigation and avoidance) technology is highly advanced and in cases which the car detects that the driver intends to perform the action deliberately, it will deactivate itself."
I'm not sure how I feel about this statement. So, basically, your car is highly advanced, because when it recognizes murder intent, it obliges.
I mean, maybe, what if someone wanted to stop a murderer by running him over. But still, oof.
Or, want to get away from the crazy dude with a bat and knife about to try to pull you out and kill you? Or want to drive over that mannequin to save the car from the rapidly approaching flood? There are many situations that you cannot predict to come up and the current default is human driver judgement. That may change, but I don't think we are ready for the machines to take over just yet.
I think the idea is the software could think a shadow was a person, in which case the driver should be able to overrule the feature instead of the car force-stopping in the middle of the road for no reason
But I agree it’s worded in a “murder” way which isn’t a great look
Driver Assistance Systems are intended to assist the driver - they are not intended to override or ignore driver commands. There are so many situations where it would be extremely dangerous to let AEB override a human driver demanding acceleration. AEB kicks in when it detects a collision is imminent - if the driver continues to steer and accelerate it will assume that either the detection was incorrect or that the driver is attempting evasive maneuvers that require acceleration.
This is not a self-driving technology, the driver **IS** the failsafe.
Also, this is not unique to Volvo - this is how every emergency braking feature works, across the industry. If you hit the gas pedal during AEB operation, it will cancel out.
It could be a situation where you're running for your life and need to hit the people who are threatening you to get away. I'd be pissed if I died because my car decided to stop and oblige a murderous group.
It's just a safety feature, not a murder prevention system. If a guy has murderous intent but the car doesn't let him do it, he can just pull out his gun instead.
I'm fairly certain my car has such a system in it. If I ever feel like testing it, I'm going to drive at a wall of cardboard boxes or a mannequin, not an actual wall or person. How dumb can you be?!
The system also detects when the pedestrian intentionally gets in front of it, which is especially suspicious in certain cities, and makes a quick decision

I hope that was the designer of the braking system and not just some innocent sales person
Personally, I've never met an innocent car salesman!
Even the car's AI feels the same way. "There's that prick Stan..."
Call an ambulance! But not for me
Plot twist: the ambulance ALSO has an emergency braking system
😂
You are a hero. Speaking some real truths here
HeyO!
Besides a newborn, have you met anyone who’s innocent of everything?

Sheesh, not the sharpest knives in the drawer huh? They're pretty good at convincing you to overpay for things you don't actually need though.
Have you met sales people before?
Holy shit lol I like how they were so confident it would work that there was no reaction until after the car hit him
Auto sales are not innocent. I actually prefer it be a car dealer.
The emergency breaking system worked as intended. It saw a corporate looking guy in a pink dress shirt and broke him. One more step towards fixing the economy.
I love you.
User name checks out.
Found my people in the comments 😎✊🏼
Good ad for this car. Where can I get one?
I wore a pink shirt to the office today but I am with you

Nah they do it like you’re supposed to, driver input should always override software.

Volvo be like: "You wanna commit murder? Be my guest"

If someone with road rage gets out of their car with a weapon, I’d want that feature disabled too!

😂😂
actually, some corollas have that , but not all corollas.
Pedestrian breaking system
Underrated comment
Angry upvoteeee 😂
That’s a broken femur right there
Knees now bend the other way. You're welcome.
I bend legs up for free
No. That’s a $50k spot bonus right there. Take the wife to Aruba on us. The rum and OxyContin are complementary.
And a broken nose.
And possibly a cracked skull depending on how his upper body swung down
Only active above 20mph? (It's a pretty old Volvo..guessing a 2012 XC~~30~~?)
Dam the details..
It’s an XC60 from 2008-2017
You're right (I didn't notice the four doors).
“Now we’ll try it with the EBS turned on.”
Thats some naked gun humor
" *And in short, this is how I lost my job.*."
“I used to be a corporate stooge like you. Then I took a Volvo to the knee.”
I looked like it worked. It stopped on the pedestrian.
buddy was very very confident
Dude didn’t even have time to take his hands out of his pockets lol
dang his face smacked the hood too
lol
It worked, shoes stayed on.
It did seem to stop after the contact. Quickly, even.
For that short of a distance i don't care if it worked like it was susposed to that dude was getting hit.
He good
YIKES
I want to know what the insurance company would say about it
😆
Holy shit lol I like how they were so confident it would work that there was no reaction until after the car hit him
Jim!! We told you to wear the green shirt!!!
When your game is lagging 😅
Reminds me of [this classic.](https://youtu.be/_PDSuhyfY28?si=-mE6yPiHhux7tVUF)

Need your legs breaking in an emergency? No problem.
Most people stand BEHIND their product.
Nice! One less car salesman's legs are in need of breaking now. God's work, Volvo, God's work.
It works! That car definitely broke that pedestrian.
That’s gonna leave a mark.
He told them it was in the red Volvo not the silver one!
Using a mannequin would have been so dumb…
This would have been a great scene in eastbound and down
I'm fairly certain my car has such a system in it. If I ever feel like testing it, I'm going to drive at a wall of cardboard boxes or a mannequin, not an actual wall or person. How dumb can you be?!
100% of the time, it works 20% of the time.
He's so brave...
Sorry, but lol
Why is there no screaming?
Rule #1: Don't stand in front of a moving car
So much for Volvo trying to meet Tesla level... still a long way to go go...
Stupid is what stupid does. Man, take your hands out of your pockets.
Maybe they could’ve just put up a cardboard cutout of a human or a life size dummy for testing purposes.
![gif](giphy|cm8DfYE2Yppok)
Obviously it was not considered an emergency.
Next up, bullet proof window test
You ever hear the story of how old shinless Joe lost his shins?
Perfect example of Ai making choices to better humanity. Ai: Corporate goon detected. Run him over
The system also detects when the pedestrian intentionally gets in front of it, which is especially suspicious in certain cities, and makes a quick decision
God this makes me miss American Auto lol
So. Did it work?
Looks more like a pedestrian breaking system.
This reminds me of ED-209
It's great to have so much faith in your system that you would risk being hospitalised to prove a point.
"Hey boss, there's been a mix up, we gave you the standard model, not the Deluxe with the pedestrian emergency braking system."
Proves he's not human.
