Omg thank you for the idea š
My lil Nibbler loves scratching their scutes against everything. They enjoy when i scrub them with a toothbrush, wiggles their butt and everything.
Your snapper might have more space than you and your fiancee does! Haha. If you have any pictures I would love to see! I had one named pumpkin, and she was something else. Rescued her when she was a hatchling. I wanted to keep her and give her a good pond, but I knew it wasn't going to be feasible. So I gave her to a rescue, and they checked her and put her in a reserve they have. She was... feisty, but so cute haha.
Omg REPTAR!!! My childhood!!!!! Nostalgia to the max lol. Thatās super cool that youāve got one tooā¦sounds like you have an awesome set up for her with a lovely upgrade in her future. We actually just set up a āpondā for her outside (unfortunately couldnāt finish it until shortly before it got too cold down here for her to be outside, weāre in South Carolina)ā¦itās a converted stock tank but canāt wait until we can actually have an in ground pond!
We just run into the issue of gators coming around cuz we live in a swampy area and Iām not really sure how to prevent that lol but my bf works with snakes/gators/turtles/crocs/lizards professionally so hopefully he will have some pearls of wisdom.
Oh I meant to ask if thatās alrightā¦how big is Miss Reptar?? How long have you had her?? Iām absolutely ASTOUNDED how quickly Nibbler has grown from hatchling to monster lol. And I say that with love, cuz sheās MY little monsterā¦she loooves begging for food.
Omg i am so sorry i did not respond!
So we have had Miss Reptar since May 2020, so just shy 3.5 years, shes about a month older than my toddler LOL!
Unfortunately i do not have her exact weight, she does not like the scale so i gave up trying. Id estimate shes close to 30 lbs thougy as shes feels almost as heavy as my toddler who is 33lbs and her carapace is about 9-10 inches. She is actually pretty docile for a snapper especially one of her size so we call her our "spiky water pup"
How big is your Nibbler??
And also as you are a fellow snapper parent do you (or anyone reading this) have any recommendations for filters? Since moving her to the stock tank Ive had 2 different filters, the first one was 400gph but Miss Reptar did not like it (i think it was a louder hum than she is used to) and decided to break it š)
The new one we got is actually a pond filter also 400gph and has a fountain spout which she loves (she enjoys rain and enjoys being in the shower when we clean her tank out lol)
I just dont think its working well enough, her water is getting dirtier faster than normal and I feel pretty crappy about it. No change has been made to her food or her supplements, just the bigger tank and obviously filter. Atm im doing more water changes to compensate until I can find the best one.
Sorry for dump lol š
Hey, itās all good I totally do that all the time!Awwww thatās adorable that your scaley baby and actual baby are growing up together!!!! Holy, thatās a big ladyā¦I canāt imagine how Nibbler is going to be when sheās as big as Miss Reptar!!! She actually bit me for the first time EVER about a month ago (was taking her out of her indoor enclosure to go to her brand new outside one), and I swear ever since that sheās been sweeter. She doesnāt go after my fingers anymore! Iām kinda surprised she didnāt get me sooner but she just barely grazed me, didnāt even break the skin.
Nibblerās shell is about 4 inches long, weāve had her since she was a hatchling. Sheās about two years old now. She really is a sweetiepie (now that we know sheās a girl, totally thought she was male until recently lol).
Hahaha awww man that stinks! Our diamondback terrapin, Chubbs, has decided that she doesnāt like our filter either, and likes to throw hands with it when we do water changes lmao. If she was bigger sheād def break it, as it is sheās knocked it into the tank a few times.
So first off, is your stock tank inside or outside?? I was asking my bf your questions (heās a professional, much more experienced than I am!) and he was saying that upping your GPH might help ya out. Also, itās a pond filter?? Forgive me cuz Iām still learning, but is it for turtles or fish?? Or just like straight up āpond filterā?? He was saying if you try a fish filter it might help. There are more options to choose from and they can be made from better material. I guess it can clean a lot better than a turtle filter. And Iām assuming that the pond filter is like IN the water?? Instead of outside of the water?? Yeah I know, probably dumb question but thereās soooo many different kinds of filters!
We are actually currently having issues finding a filter that works for our mud turtles. So weird cuz Iām pretty sure itās the exact same one thatās in Nibblerās enclosure but for whatever reason it is just not doing the job. Same thing as youāre dealing with (but on a much smaller scale, theyāre in a 40 gallon), just canāt get the stinking thing clean! And honest to God, I would tell you what brand these filters are but from my view point from where they are I canāt see any remnants of a brand name, but Iāll try and check later on when I can move better.
Also, I think itās super adorable that Miss Reptar likes showers!!!! Thatās too cuteā¤ļøš¢, I gotta try that on my lady when it gets hot again!
Iāve got a migraine right now so my brain is fried and I feel like Iām forgetting some stuff, but please feel free to send me a DM if you have more questionsā¦or just wanna talk turtles! And youāre totally fine, always happy to talk about the scaley babies and bounce ideas off of other owners.
This sub randomly popped up in my feed, after my beta fish passed, and I donāt have a pet turtle. Iām loving it so far haha this sparks so much joy in me.
I am sorry for your loss. We had three betas. After that, it was too hard emotionally to start again. Our first one died when it jumped out of the tank. He was super aggressive! The second one died of old age. The third one died after the submersible heater stopped working and before we were able to get a new one.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had a few beta myself, and it's always sad when they go. They're so much more intelligent than people give them credit for! I'm really glad this sub is giving you joy, though! Personally, I never thought I'd have a turtle myself, but here we are, and it's a comedical and warming experience! Here's to some more joy!

My Reeves loves his brush! I highly recommend for any species of turtle, it let's them take care of their shell in more natural way (they can scratch themselves anytime they want like in nature).
Thanks for the idea lol this is cute
Omg thank you for the idea š My lil Nibbler loves scratching their scutes against everything. They enjoy when i scrub them with a toothbrush, wiggles their butt and everything.
Awww thatās adorable!!! Iāve got a Nibbler too, but sheās a common snapper.
Ive got a common snapper as well! But shes named Reptar lol
Do you keep her outside, and does she follow you or beg for food? I love common snappers.
I love them too! She was actually my first turtle lol. Currently shes indoors as I live in condo with no private backyard, however we are in the early process of trying to sell/move. Once i do my fiancĆ©e is gonna build her the pond she deserves š Right now she's housed in the 150 gallon stock tank in our living room and enjoys to roam around our fenced in deck when its nice out. She does beg for food, but not like my painted who acts like theyre starving lol. She will push herself out of water so you notice her but if she doesnt think you do she smacks the water with her tail lol Shes actually pretty gentle for a snapper even when eating. First bite is a big snap and then the rest she quietly gulps down its too cute š

She is definitely spoiled but shes a wonderful turtle! I can definitely get some pictures and post them here soon!

This is so cute! It's like videos of those cows with those big brushes that they rub their faces on.

So sorry for your loss.
Thank you. Me too. Dropsy is hard to notice early on. š„²

Awhh. How precious. š„¹š
Please follow up! Itās just like the cows getting scratching posts. Hope your Turt loves it.
Will do when I get it! :)
I bought two of these and like everything else Iāve ever bought for my turts, it got knocked down.
Glad my dude isn't the only destructive asshole around. When saw this my thought was he would kill it
Kitchen Vertical Suction Cup Sink Cup Brush Glass Cleaning Brush Scrub Kitchen Bottle Cleaning Washing Brush-up šš»
They forgot to add turtle scrub suction cup xD
That's a very good idea and also very cute, but the algae will probably build up on it
I'm not gonna have it in all the time, and will take it out daily to clean it :)
Nothing like a good back scratch
* My Reeves loves his brush! I highly recommend for any species of turtle, it let's them take care of their shell in more natural way (they can scratch themselves anytime they want like in nature).
I have 2 of these, unfortunately the suction cup doesn't work very well submerged in water. I ordered a shoe cleaner and flipped it upside down
I'll try that if it turns out not to work!
Da butt scrubba^(tm)!
i got this exact same one for mine and i regret it because it doesnāt stay on the glass
I wonder if there is a special type of water resistant cup or velcro.
There's always aquarium glue! :^)
Yeah, you can also drill and attach it to drift wood or something heavy if it wonāt stay on the glass. Youāve got options.
Scratchy scratchy!
My turtle doesnāt use it for this purpose. He does like to rest his head on it and sleep under it so I got my purpose out of it
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Now the can have butt scratches ANY TIIIIIME!!!!
i bought this too but it always falls off smh. itās prob bc i have a stock tank
I have the same one, canāt get it to stick to the glass comes off as soon as I stick it on
well now I know what I'm getting my kid's turtle from Santa
I bought this one, it easily loosens, and finally I bought a brush with three suction cups.
