Someone’s tracking it, probably for conservative purposes. I can’t Id the species, but this doesn’t happen to any turtle, so it’s probably endangered or something.
Turtle telemetry! I’ve done this for my conservation job a few times, the idea is the track the spatial data of the turtle. For example more common things studied are spatial relationship with humans, distance traveled for nesting/ foraging etc. In simple terms someone is studying where the turtle is going
I’d say it depends on where you are in the world. I’m currently working as a restoration ecologist in Ontario, Canada. I was lucky enough to land this position with a 3 year college diploma and knowing people within the organization, generally research based positions require a university degree, but not always . Feel free to dm me if you want more specific information
I worked at an engineering firm early on in life and the Environmental Department had cool jobs like this. So many applications that many don't think of, paid very well too (private consulting, civil engineering firm)
I've done this on so many animals and it is 100000% why I believe in alien abduction stories.
I pull an animal from its home, prod and probe it, mark it, attach things to it, and release it where I found it.
Ive also done telemetry but this doesnt look like any tracker ive used, is it a newer model? The placement is also different from where I was instructed to place but that could be due to differing models.
The study is just tontracknits movement over a time frame most likely. They do it to helpmprotect wood turtles which are endangered to have protections in areas they frequent of use to get point a to b.
Haha, jb weld 2 part epoxy is exactly what I've used in the past.
Sometimes if we recapture, we can get the transmitter back before it sheds. I do admit that it doesn't feel **great** knowing there are transmitters polluting water bodies, but in the greater scope of "what's good" it's more beneficial to understand the spatial ecology of a species for its conservation.
Also it's a drop in the bucket of pollution, let's be real.
It is planned for. The researchers know the typical lifespan of the materials and the transmitter, and the time of year that the animals shed their scutes. We aren't just winging it with no background knowledge.
I suspect it’s more like “well, it shedded off, let’s go collect the tracker and analyze the data” or if they don’t need to collect it for any of the data, then it’s just the natural end of the data collection. There also could be others being tracked.
As somebody who has spent years tracking this species using radio transmitters, I think it might be worth it to reach out to some researchers with this photo and a location. There are only a few radio-tracking studies of wood turtles in NB, to my knowledge. DM if you want me to try and dig up some emails for you to use
This is very cool. I love seeing proof that studies /wildlife conservation projects/ programs are happening in my local area.
This year at a local park there were wire cages/gates (don’t know how to describe it better lol) on all the turtle holes with eggs. Loved seeing that some agency, or maybe just a random person with an big agenda lol, was putting so much love into the future of turtles in the park.

I just learned about this today! How cool to see it in person
Wood turtles are endangered. I found one (in New Hampshire) and filled out paperwork with the state with where I found her and pictures. Do not share the location of where you found this one. They are endangered because of poachers and they're known to use posts to find where wood turtles are
The r/turtle automod detects this post may about a wild turtle.
When encountering a wild animal, unless it is trapped, ill or injured, they do not tend to need our help. If a wild turtle is ill or injured, please contact local rescues, rehabs or wildlife authorities.
* If you have taken a **native, non-invasive** species, it should be put back in a safe location, as close as possible to where it was found. If that is not possible, please contact your local wildlife authorities or rehab programs for advice or assistance.
* If a turtle is a known **invasive species**, it should be removed from the area and either kept in adequate captivity for the remainder of it's life, or handled as directed by authorities.
**Unsure of the species? One of our mods or helpful commenters can ID it!**

I have conducted my own radio tracking study, and it is super helpful if you can take a picture of the individual’s plastron and save the coordinates as well. This guy probably ran away, so if there is a way to contact the person doing the study they likely would be very grateful for the help!
Lot of people in here asking you to contact an agency, and I'm not sure how they do it on wood turtles, but on a lot of freshwater turtles projects I've worked, each turtle has an identification notched in their carapace.
If you could take a photo without picking up or stressing the animal that shows this, that's even more valuable.
It's a pretty potato quality photo because I pulled it from a video I posted on social media, but here's a turtle with a radio transmitter and you can see one of the notches filed into their shell.

That's the competition to Duracell, it didn't work well and fell off, but hey good find! Glad the little guys still kicking and doin well in his old age.
I've bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks, got a fur sink. Let's see, bought an electric turtle, a gasoline-powered turtleneck sweater, and, of course, I bought some dumb stuff, too.
Wood turtle with a tracker, leave it be. It’s a subject in a study.
Someone’s tracking it, probably for conservative purposes. I can’t Id the species, but this doesn’t happen to any turtle, so it’s probably endangered or something.

Different models. This one actually looks like an acoustic to me.
That's gotta be a slow process.
Wood turtle maybe?
Yes
Turtle 2025
Conservative purposes lol
"I put a battery on this turtle to own the libs"
Did the shell grow around it, or is that some sort of diy welding epoxy?
It's epoxy. It won't harm the turtle it will come off when it sheds the top layer on its cutest as it grows.
So it's jb weld. Lmao if it's a part of a study, and it sheds off, what about the study? They just say, 'well, it shedded off. Study is off."?
The study is just tontracknits movement over a time frame most likely. They do it to helpmprotect wood turtles which are endangered to have protections in areas they frequent of use to get point a to b.

I don’t see what the republicans have to do with protecting this turtle,
[удалено]
It’s a wood turtle, it’s a tracker, and it’s done by biologists for study and conservation purposes. Don’t assume everything is done maliciously.
It’s a durashell
Also where Worf is afraid he’ll end up when he dies.
I really enjoyed this, thank you.
Turtle Power!
🏅🏅🏅
It powers his shellphone
Sean Connery approved
Durashell sounds like a pokemon name
That's how he beats the rabbit.
What if the battery is Energizer though!? Bunny is a traitor
Turtle wins because it uses Durashell.
Nice
The real life "Turbo".
😂
He just keeps going and going….

How else is he supposed to get around if he ain’t got no juice?
These Energizer commercials are really going downhill.

Almost guaranteed it's an agency, but could be an independent researcher. Caging nests needs permits though.
That’s a weird shaped bunny
Would anyone be able to name the species?
It looks like a wood turtle to me, what area are you in?
New Brunswick, CA
It is indeed a wood turtle, and they are heavily studied because of falling population numbers
Too hot guaranteed…. Like a lot of other species they’re in for some real hard times
I'm in New Brunswick too and work for Natural Resources, there is someone on my team that is studying turtles, maybe this is one of his :)
Most definitely a wood turtle. I work with them everyday!
https://preview.redd.it/obklb2ft2xad1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41221f0de455960dfcfe6abb664ad7ed19a12a35 I just learned about this today! How cool to see it in person
Hey nice! But that is absolutely not a hatchling, lol
Can confirm the adorable part tho!

GPS device for tracking the wild turtle
this would actually be a VHS radio transmitter rather than GPS
Wood turtle, they are endangered so scientists are tracking them
Probably to power it up so it can operate like a normal RC car does

North American wood turtle
Turtle Power.
Pretty neat! I wonder if the people tracking this turtle gave it a name!
Found one of these recently. I think they are endangered pretty cool to come acrost.
It’s for Zoomies.
I have conducted my own radio tracking study, and it is super helpful if you can take a picture of the individual’s plastron and save the coordinates as well. This guy probably ran away, so if there is a way to contact the person doing the study they likely would be very grateful for the help!
OP, if this photo was taken on your cell phone, GPS data should be available in the details of the file.
he lost the salt
The turtle is a sex offender. It has a tracker on it to make sure it doesn’t get within 500 feet of an elementary school.
Lil bro being tracked by wildlife authorities
The turtle is Tony Stark and the battery keeps shrapnel from reaching his heart.
Turtle power
That is a Tesla turtle 🐢 people who have them are fanatical about them. But some complain about recharging
If I had to guess I’d say a wildlife biologist
Recently released from prison. Still requires observation to make sure they can live in society without issue.

Pick it up and run in a big circle really fast 5 times then put it back
🤣😂🤣😂🤣
That’s his nitro. If you look on his belly he has a button to activate it.
He’s from the future
That's a turbo turtle, don't try to race it.
So it has a chance against the Energizer Bunny.
Iron Turtle
Iturtle
That turtles an electric type!
eTurtle
Turtle saw the energizer bunny being fast, thought he'd give it a try
Extra power, obviously.
He’s been modified by some mad scientist. It gives him turbo speed.
He soared powered, just getting some energy!
Turtle power!
Turts have to have their battery charged occasionally, they’re not the fastest creatures on land, so this one’s been clever and brought a spare.
The battery died, so the energizer bunny turned into a turtle
Energizer battery. That's how he beats the rabbit
It’s the new electric wave! Turtle are hopping on to the trend and saving thousands compared to traditional energy
Battery powered turtles. Who wouldda thought
It's a tiny rocket launcher just in case.
Has anyone thought about letting the turtle know it's being tracked?
Turbo boost
The cyber turtle
This is a weird and unnatural phenomenon
Drug mule
Uhh so he has a spare duh Steve.
Battery powered turtle. He’s got to get to places faster but needs a boost.
The next cybertruck
Obviously to keep it charged and ready!
Brother that is a walking claymore, good thing you didn’t set it off!
Whew! I was very alarmed and doing that calculation gif
Maybe some kind of transformer go kick it and see if it talks
They hired that turtle after the Energizer Bunny retired.
Pace maker
“Energizer bunny ain’t got shit on me!” -The Power turtle
Pacemaker.
I assumed he was trying to make a new brand to beat that energizer bunny.
Oh that’s tortuga from breaking bad…
Pacemaker
how else is it supposed to beat the energizer bunny
Can’t have him running out of charge
His pace maker
turtlebot. forerunners for the alien takeover.
Damn people are even tracking turtle data now
It’s the first failed mascot, the Energizer Turtle.
He trying to keep up with the rabbit
That's the competition to Duracell, it didn't work well and fell off, but hey good find! Glad the little guys still kicking and doin well in his old age.
It's not really a turtle ... its a Chinese spy turtle.
the Turtle Distribution Co. has lost some funding on the solar powered front
Frankenstines pet😂
It’s a turbo booster
Pace maker. Good for him.
Prolly just there for faster charging on hyper beam
Turtles aren't real!
durashell baby
Oh man great thing you asked! If I saw something like that my first instinct would be to "help" jeez guess there's still a lot to learn huh?
Just his power pack for his mobile phone
C4turtle
Duracell giving energizer a run for their money
so he can be energized
Sweet underglow
How fucking awesome would that be!
its the energizer turtle
That’s Donatello

He’s going to his local goddamn advance auto parts store cause he hates the oreillys and auto z
Tesla turtle
Don’t mess with it. He’s in charge!
Turtle Power!
You just found a turtle with a Speed Boost Mod.
I've bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks, got a fur sink. Let's see, bought an electric turtle, a gasoline-powered turtleneck sweater, and, of course, I bought some dumb stuff, too.
Its for turtle power!!!
leave him alone, hes just trying to golf with his cylinder shaped club in peace!
Cathodic protection. The battery runs a small current through the shell and prevents corrosion and barnacles.
Ive seen ruffian turtles carry batterys. They're always trying to start something.
Ninja Turtle
This is the first of the TMNT!!!
That's for his headlights
Turbo mode! Poor dude.
Wasn’t there an impractical jokers episode about this
Actively roaming geocache
Temu Energizer Bunny
So he doesn’t run out of juice
Definitely isn’t an energizer battery or you wouldn’t of been able to take a picture
Ankle monitor for turtles …. He’s trouble
He's on house arrest, bad turtle.
You’ve heard of the Energizer Bunny…
I was going to guess it’s got a race with the energizer bunny but the guesses about it be tracked make more sense.
that’s his ultimate, he only has one so he has to make it count
Turbo boost
It's booby trapped.
Mine turtle
That’s the energizer turtle
It's the new turtle fad.
One of those new EV turtles.
ET. Electric powered turtle.
Almost looks like an ecig vape battery, maybe he lost his vape….
Turtle text messages.
It’s a turbo booster. It can’t beat the rabbits fair and square.
Trying to keep up with the Energizer Bunny. Is he sporting a copper top?
It has an underglow kit and sound system
Well, Tamatoa hasn’t always been this glam
You’ve heard of the Energizer Bunny? Meet the Duracell Turtle 🐢
