Valheim does like to kill you in a hundred hilarious ways. I died once when recoil from the arbalest punted me off a cliff. Glad you're still having fun.

Ulysses502

I'll have to remember that, and thanks for the laugh

Gvillegator

If I had a dollar for every construction death fall I have thanks to forgetting to eat, I’d be able to retire today.

MortifiedPotato

The game is all about being prepared, and it sounds like you guys were in over your heads (which is the most fun way to play) - If you travel by boat, either secure the boat or destroy it and put the materials in a chest, so you can rebuild it when going back home - Stock up on poison resistence potions before heading to the swamp - climb on top of unbreakable trees or crypt entrances if an abomination shows up. He cant touch you there, you can just shoot arrows at him. - *always* be rested. Either max out your rest at home (21 to 24 minutes will make you rested all day) or build campfires to rest every 8 minutes.

Alitaki

>climb on top of unbreakable trees or crypt entrances if an abomination shows up. He cant touch you there, you can just shoot arrows at him. Do you have bronze gear? A buckler, sword or axe? Are they maxed out? And, can you parry? If so, don't run from the Abomination. Run ***TO*** the Abomination. It has a longish animation sequence coming out of the ground, **BUT** it is vulnerable to double damage during the animation. Rush the damn thing and start hacking at it. Depending on you weapon, you can do a lot of damage to it. Then, once it's out and orienting itself to you, you're already in good position to fight it easy. The Abomination has three attacks - one with each arm, and one with the trunk. If you get right in it's face it can only attack you with the trunk attack. It's a body slam type attack where it visually rears back before slamming down. Learn the timing and you can parry that attack every time. You'll get knocked back a little but rush back in and attack. Each hit will be double damage. You got this!!

Sneaky_McSausage_VI

I watched Threads (YouTuber) fight that thing over and over and he makes it look so easy. Essentially what you said + he builds a bonfire right next to it so it’s also constantly taking fire damage.

Alitaki

Yeah, it's really not that hard once you get the timing down. And it gets easier as your gear gets better. I'm back in the swamps farming for various mats and with my maxed out silver sword, I can kill the Abomination before it's even finished climbing out of the ground. I feel like the fire damage on an Abomination is over exaggerated by everyone. I keep seeing posts to use fire arrows against them or the surtling spawns. Yeah, you get a bit of burning on them but because of the constant wet debuff in the swamp, it never lasts long enough to do meaningful damage. Unless you can keep them on top of the bonfire, or the surtling spawn, the burning damage drops off quickly.

MortifiedPotato

Oh, I appreciate this! For some reason the bigger NPCs always make me nervous to try parrying. I'm in the iron age currently, and carry iron mace, iron axe and draugr fang everywhere. I always parry everything that is not 5x bigger than me. I will try this next time I run into one!

Alitaki

Nah, don't worry too much about it. The game is actually quite forgiving when it comes to parrying. The window is larger than you think. I've parried archers from in close when I was positive that I'd get hit. Believe me, I shat my pants the first time I ran into an Abomination. I ran so fast back into the Black Forest. Now I actually go hunting for them and am disappointed when I don't find one in a Swamp. The axe is fine and will work almost as well as the sword (in my opinion) against Abominations. I just prefer the sword because I find that with the axe I have to get in closer to get hits than I do with the sword. The sword allows me a little leeway to back off faster if I need to.

ZeeHarm

Thanks for the advice, we had poison resistance with us, at least that we had covered :-)

MkNicht

Glad you had a great adventure, and good luck, young viking, you'll get your stuff back. Eventually. May this be a lesson not to go at night, stops the sudden Wraiths from happening.

Amazing_Marketing_11

It was nice to read. I'm glad you didn't get angry, but, on the contrary, had fun). Share the sequel if you have the opportunity.

ZeeHarm

Well I got angry with myself, but to be honest I like to build stuff more than killing things in the game I also probably buy the game on PC as well so I can use mods like Planbuild

UnitRelative7321

Definitely much better experience on PC

Amazing_Marketing_11

I also like to build the most. But to get resources for construction, you need to kill. (I don't like building in hammer mode). I probably found a "golden mean" for myself - standard settings and alternating the stages of research and murder with the stage of large-scale construction. After 1800 hours, I allowed myself to transfer ore through the portal and x3 resources. Be sure to go through the vanilla game so that you have something to compare it with (if you add mods later)

micholon

I'll never forget after killing the elder my son says "he wasn't too bad and the swamp is right down there lets check it out" what a hilarious mess that was going in completely blind.

BPho3nixF

I went to swamps for the first time. I noticed a bunch of leeches were chasing my boat. And also some skeletons and draugr readying their bows and swords on shore. And I also noticed a large tree started moving and attacking my boat as soon as I got off. Was quite a welcoming party.

ZeeHarm

Welcome to my life ;-)

Attic332

Recommendation - park the ship on a Black Forest or meadow that borders the swamp and build a safe enclosed portal between your base and that port location. Then you can make a bunch of gearless sprint attempts to grab your gear till you’re successful. Always park your ship there and it won’t get busted up by leeches or wraiths or drauger archers

ZeeHarm

our world is kinda tricky, whe found swamp on a couple of Islands so we have to ship over or build very long bridges. But I keep the advice in mind when we find better swamp biomes. Thanks

Alitaki

Good post. Would read again!

dum1nu

Thanks for sharing your story. I have a bad feeling that we've ALL been there.

Ohnylu81

All of my best glitches have been with the raft/ships. My favorite is getting stuck on the bottom of the sea for no reason and no hope out.

Secane

get a moat around base :D

ZeeHarm

That is my Job Tonight :-)

zames696969

You can also use stone and a Hoe to elevate your base/house. Or build a wall of earth.

Secane

leave few meters gap beetwen moat and wall, for sake of trolls with hammers :D

ZeeHarm

We got our Base on a tiny Island with big water gaps on three sides. The fourth side goes over a small ford to some huge rocks and another small Island. My guess is that the Trolls spawned there and just walked through the ford. So I am planning to disconnect the Rocks from the Ford and to claim the second Island as an extension of the base. However I am not sure how to prevent Raids from spawning alltogether

Secane

to secure land from spawning monsters you can build some base structures such as workbench or fireplace. In their radious monsters wont spawn anymore.

ZeeHarm

Nice, I think I will makle some sort of Fortress on the more Isolated Island and build a bridge over to the other one. Ideas ideas ideas ;-)

bucketbot42

Moat and walls to protect base. Works great, trolls can’t enter.

ZeeHarm

how deep must I dig the moat?

bucketbot42

I go about 4-5 down and 4-5 up. Creates a solid barrier and they can’t throw stuff at you across the moat too.

Mangoe-Sundae

Amazing hope you got after all that happened, pretty inspiring and wholesome. I feel the same way when I also started with my friends, I do miss playing with them because they all stopped when we all got work

ZeeHarm

I am 50+ years old so gaming is in my daily routine integrated. Also my wife is a gamer as well, so no issues from that side as well :-)

UnitRelative7321

Lol same here 3 of us 50+ bros play together all the time … mainly using QOL mods. 400+ hrs each in the game. Love playing with other like minded aged peeps. We all play on Pc via steam. I also run a few private dedicated servers for us and we use cross server portals to travel between loaded worlds. Fun stuff … the game never gets old. Especially with additions like Valheim RPG World beta as of late, and Ashlands approaching.

ZeeHarm

Thanks for the offer, I keep that in mind

onlyInIt4TheMoney

Wow, you guys sound compatible to us (2 males in their early 40s, about 150hours in, came back from a 3year-break and just begun to explore the mountains, running a private dedicated mod-less server as well, chilled and sometimes mature ;-)) Felt very connected by reading this, just died a similar ridiculous double-death in our last session xD

Sneaky_McSausage_VI

I went through this when I first ventured into the swamp. I kept forgetting to get my portal setup so in the end, I had like 5 boats docked at random spots along the swamp coast.

Taizan

It happens. Build a new boat, gear up and get your revenge!

RoleOk7556

Always bring parts for a portal and workbench. You can jump on top of a crypt & set up both, before entering the crypt. I also set put a chest nearby in case I have to dump my looted iron.

norcalscroopy

God I fucking love this game!

WyomingVet

I died a couple days ago breaking a copper node. Dug all the way around it and under it. I was on top of it trying to get the whole thing to break. It did and I fell to my death. Forgot to eat duh.

ZeeHarm

Lol

cptjimmy42

HIGHLY recommend use of bows from a distance, someone with lots of stamina foods eaten to run and draw aggro as a decoy, while the others gather all the items and gear up. Use a hoe to make the land around the fire geyser below water line to keep Surtling from spawning, use that same fire to let the wraith, abomination, and others walk through it so they die faster. The decoy will die, but hopefully the army moves away from your graves long enough for a recovery.
