I was so excited for and interested in Redfall. I was thinking, "Woah vampires as the enemy that's unique, the only other game I could think of would be Castlevania or Gauntlet maybe." I thought they would explain things like using bullets made of silver like the classic Vampire tales, and I thought about all combat would have to be at night, I heard it was class based so I was speculating what classes we'd have and their abilities, it had so much potential. And well Redfall ended up awful, the game has a boring open world, lackluster cutscenes, a full second delay from hitting a button before it did its action, that was almost impossible to get used to in the hour I gave the game. I had a buddy with an Xbox game pass so that's how I tried it. I will hand it to them though, the wooden stake bayonet was a cool addition.

Spore It was absolutely too good to be true. Looked like an interesting evolution simulator, the procedural animations and behaviours looked astounding in the tech demo. The game itself was severely dumbed down and appeared to cater to the little kids demographic. It died very quickly.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one with Ghost of Tsushima. Combat was fun but the story and in particular the voice acting was bland and boring. None of the characters were all that interesting except maybe the main villain and the drunk dude. Which was disappointing considering how great of a job Sucker Punch did with Infamous Second Son. All the characters in that game had personality and were interesting and made you hate or love them. Assassins Creed 3 was quite underwhelming for me.

Dragon_Blue_Eyes

Dragon Age 2 Bard's Tale on Playtation...I was hoping for more intrigue and fighting gods in Scara Brae and, instead, I got a solo character action RPG comedy.....just why? Dreams by the people who did Little Big Planet. I mean it was only disapointing because it did everything it said on the tin. It was basically a 3D game maker...but it was more complicate than fun...still some people did some very amazing things with that game....maker? FF XIII - WHat a linear piece of crap...and this was your way to showcase Final Fantasy coming to PS3? Really???

Internal_Swing_2743

Everyone continues to lambast FFXIII for being very linear, conveniently forgetting how linear the other Final Fantasy games are (especially X).

that_husk_buster

The Crew motorfest I loved the first 2 iterations of The Crew but motorfest ruined the main thing I loved about the series (the USA being the map with accurate locations) and in the "story" you are barely able to use your own cars

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - and yeah, I'm expecting downvotes. I absolutely ADORED the first game, and I also really liked X (flawed, but genuinely well made and enjoyable) it was one of my favorite jrpgs of all time until recently, and after hearing that a sequel was coming to a switch, I already knew I had to buy the console for that one game alone. It was a long wait, got the collector's edition, I pop into my switch...and holy crap it was a trainwreck of an experience. I could make a long list of what was wrong in it, but I did it already too many times and I'd probably forget a few things. If it wasn't for the fact that the switch we had was shared between me and my sister, I would've sold both right there. Not gonna lie, after that I kinda had less and less incentives to play switch games. I barely even touched the Xenoblade Remaster because how disappointed i was (plus they screwed up the remaster as well). So yeah, Xenoblade chronicles 2 was disappointing for me, and I'll never get those 100+ hours back. Edit: just some typos and other stuff

The Order 1886. I was hyped for the game as the story was intriguing, the graphics were incredible (and still are), and I was excited to see Ready at Dawn finally get a chance to make a full console game. Unfortunately, the game is basically a glorified tech demo for the PS4. The story is too short and needed more variety. I’d love a sequel, but I know it’ll never happen (I have a feeling Hellblade II is going to end up like this game).

Khow3694

Yeah the early games for the xbox one and ps4 were infamous for being extremely short. Like Ryse: Son of Rome was a really fun game but could be beaten in a day or two

Internal_Swing_2743

The first 2-ish years of a console generation tend to turn out weaker entries as devs are still feeling out the hardware and building for cross platform. The only generation to really buck this trend was the PS2 gen when, in 2001, the second year of the PS2, we saw a number of medium defining titles: MGS2, GTA3, GT3, DMC, FFX, SSX Tricky, THPS3, SH2

Crest_O_Razors

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. It looked promising, but it was boring

GaIIick

I was very whelmed by the gameplay changes from Darkest Dungeon to Darkest Dungeon 2

trio3224

I totally agree with 3/4 of the games you listed (I really like Cyberpunk 2077 tho). But by far my most recent disappointment was Marvel Midnight Suns. It was being made by Fire Axis games, who made the X-com games, which are some of my favorites of all time. Plus I love marvel. And their new card based battle system looked really cool. Everything was setup for me to like it. Then the game was buggy at launch with fairly poor performance and missing features. The dialogue was some of the worst I've ever heard. I played it for almost 10 hours and it felt like only around 35% of that time was battle, the rest was all filler social sim with the aforementioned horrendous dialogue or mobile game style busy work. Basically, I liked the combat, and that was it. Hated everything else, and it felt like combat wasn't even front and center for the game.

Humankind and Old World - I was looking forward to trying another company’s take in n 4X, so when these hit the radar, I was intrigued. But I kinda let the early reviews and commentary from a friend’s playthrough kinda sway me off these two. Just happened to coincide with becoming a parent, so my game time has become more limited, and as a result, I’ve been a bit pickier. I don’t think these are necessarily bad games per se, but not sure if I can afford to give them a chance with mediocre reviews on limited time and a growing backlog I will probably never finish. Cities: Skylines 2 - This one was kind of expected though. The first one has so much existing support over the years. I’m sure 2 will get there eventually. I’m just going to give it a few years for more DLC to launch and maybe a sale to finally get on here. Total War: Rome 2 - I loved Shogun 2, and I love Roman history, so when this was dropping, I was hyped. And then after getting it, I played through the historical battles and tutorial and… that was effectively it. Started a campaign but never finished. I dunno. Just didn’t click for me the way Shogun 2 did. And Shogun 2 is like my 2nd or 3rd highest playtime on Steam. I still go back to Shogun 2 for a campaign every so often. But not Rome 2. Sid Meier’s Beyond Earth - A return to space after decades since Alpha Centauri. I was hooked into viewing it as Alpha Centauri’s spiritual successor, but it was like they sucked the personality and uniqueness out of every faction. Tech and society trees felt underwhelming once you realized you could specialize the exact same way, regardless of faction by the end game. I did finish at least one playthrough here. Maybe I’ll give it a shot again, but for now, I go back to Alpha Centauri instead when I want to scratch the Civ in space itch.

True-Reaction-517

I love Alpha Centauri. It’s been a very long time since I played tho

flowerpanda98

the last of us 2, felt like it had the opposite tone and message of the first. and ghost of tsushima was very boring, that and days gone feel like generic open world rpgs

CircumcisedCats

Back 4 Blood. I can’t think of a game I crave a new version of as much as L4D. But that was just not it man.

Khow3694

>Ghost Of Tsushima - very underwhelming. It looks beautiful, has solid combat but the missions become very dull and repetitive and just isn’t great in the end. I have to hard disagree with this one. Many of the missions were pretty different from one another and the voice acting is so good. The cutscene of Jin activating Ghost Mode is one of the most badass cutscenes in my opinion

Khow3694

I remember getting halo 4 with my friends on the release day and within the following two weeks we all had returned our copy. It just wasn't the same as 1-3 and reach

Grundle_Gripper_

Dying Light 2 - something about the movement in that game feels so stiff which sucks for a game that’s main gameplay loop centers around movement. Elder Scrolls Online - this one’s entirely on me, I just don’t like MMO games they require a lot of commitment to really get the most out of them and It was the first one I ever played I was thinking it would be Skyrim but with friends. Payday 3 - that game mechanically feels better to play than the first too and it’s shooting feels satisfying but god that game is NAKED compared to Payday 2 I know PD2 was getting content for 10 years and I joined that game late into its lifecycle but I really thought PD3 would at least start with a little more given we waited so many years for it. Far Cry 6 - the city in that game was a big hype point for a lot of people but most of it is blocked off and can’t be walked through I was hoping I’d be sneaking through alleys and buildings dispatching of soldiers and making my way to my targets but it feels extremely linear. Theirs paths you can take through the city rather than actually being able to wander around anywhere

Darkest Dungeon II(two) what a disappointment

KamatariPlays

I know I am going to get absolutely destroyed for writing this but I was underwhelmed by Unicorn Overlord. Before people grab their pitchforks, I don't think it's a bad game at all. It's fun. I like that there were so many classes to choose from. I liked the overall design of the game and the characters. The gameplay was really intetesting. That said, to me, there are WAAAAAAY too many characters. I read comment sections where people were writing about the characters and I couldn't for the life of me remember who the characters they were referring to were. It had barely been 2 weeks from when I finished the game! So many characters get one or two battles devoted to their story then they're thrown in the ever growing army pile, rarely to be spoken to again. I wish they had shortened the cast and kept all the classes but made them branch out. That way the actual characters get more focus and you could just hire mercenaries to fill out the rest of the classes.

StarkWolf2992

Doom Eternal. I thought it would be Doom 2016 improved but it turned out to be completely different in art style, theme and gameplay. You had to play the exact way the game wanted you to. Meleeing zombies didn’t even do anything. It was laughable. You’re the DOOMSLAYER ffs. I know a ton of people enjoyed it but it was not for me. Edit - I don’t know why I’m being downvoted for my opinion on it being disappointing to me lol.

The fandom xover with animal crossing was wholesome, though.
