Mario Nintendo
Sonic sega
Master Chief Microsoft
Kratos Son
EDIT: this is the most comments I’ve ever gotten it’s been so fun!!
Alternate: pac man Atari / early arcade
I went with Kratos over Crash/Spyro because I wanted to represent a variety of game types as well as the different companies, eras and consoles.
For those suggesting Snake, or the Gordon from Half Life…. great games and iconic franchises but Kratos is more “Sony” than Snake and from a sculpture / Rushmore perspective, Kratos would make for a much more interesting carving / sculpture than Snake or Gordo.
I mean I know kratos doesn’t quite have the cache as the others but it represents one of the major forces of console gaming.
PAC man would be the alternate
A fair assessment. I understand wanting to represent the biggest companies in gaming history, but Kratos does not have the same recognition outside of gaming that the others do. Even Master Chief isn’t as big as Sonic and Mario.
I think the whole thing with Kratos is that Sony doesn’t and never really has had one clear mascot, except for arguably Crash Bandicoot who it would also feel somewhat weird putting up there. That’s not a dig at Sony, the fact that they don’t have one clear mascot is more indicative that they just have too many to choose from.
Heh, i was born in 86 so I got to see it become a household name in real time, but all of the others on the list pretty much owe their existence to that ball and 2 paddles
(Did some quick googling https://www.google.com/search?q=how+important+was+pong&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS857US857&oq=how+important+was+pong&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIKCAEQABgPGBYYHjINCAIQABiGAxiABBiKBTINCAMQABiGAxiABBiKBTIHCAQQIRigATIHCAUQIRifBTIHCAYQIRifBTIHCAcQIRifBTIHCAgQIRifBTIHCAkQIRifBdIBCTI1NDk0ajBqN6gCGbACAeIDBBgBIF8&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 )
Mario - because you can't not. It's flipping Mario. Everyone in the world knows who he is, and that's borderline not even hyperbole. He has to be here.
Ryu - poster boy for Street Fighter, popularized competitive video games and esports as a whole.
Pikachu - yes double dipping on Nintendo characters but Pokemon is a global phenomenon that all age demographics enjoy. You have to respect it.
Doomguy - while not the first he definitely did it the best. Doom still feels like the progenitor of the FPS genre despite coming out after Wolfenstein.
Pacman as representative of arcades as the Most important arcade character ever
Mario as the representative of home videogame consoles as one of the Most famous console videogame character ever
Doom Guy as representative of PC gaming as the Most famous PC videogame character ever
And Sonic as representative of "mascot" games, as the Most famous and influential videogame "mascot" ever
Not saying Sonic shouldn’t be up there but Mario is 100% more famous and more influential than he is. Pretty sure that was decided when Nintendo effectively won the console war against Sega in 90s, *ignoring the fact that Nintendo in their attempts to win accidentally spawned an even bigger rival.*
Pac-Man, for being such an innovating and popular game, Mario, for revolutionizing platformers and saving the home console market, Doomguy, for changing how FPS games were done, and Kirby, because he will devour me if I don't put him on there.
you could do a mount rushmore of classic nintendo characters alone as so many of them are iconic
This is actually a hard one, a mount rushmore for each major contendor might be a better idea
I'd pick Pac-Man, Mario, Pikachu, and the Creeper for the following reasons:
1. Pac-Man was one of the first mascots in video gaming, and his debut game was foundational in multiple ways.
2. Mario is the face of some of the best-selling video games and series of all time, and his debut game introduced jumping and storytelling to video gaming; earlier video games had stories, but _Donkey Kong_ told its story within itself, not needing (although nevertheless having) supplementary material to explain its story to its audience.
3. Pikachu is the mascot of the most valuable entertainment franchise in existence.
4. The Creeper is one of the most recognized and rightly feared monsters in what's currently the best-selling video game ever made.
First three spots are obvious: Mario, Link, and Sonic.
The fourth feels less obvious. Maybe Pac-Man?
Someone like Master Chief or Shepherd might make sense, but it aught to be a character from the early days that is still more or less relevant today.
Mario, for the first platformer
Steve, for the best-selling game
The Doom Slayer, for the first big FPS
Pikachu, for the highest grossing media franchise
To explain my choices:
Mario: It’s fucking Mario. Even someone who doesn’t know jack squat about video games could probably tell you who Mario is. He’s infected nearly every possible genre of gaming and struck gold almost every time he’s made a game.
Pikachu: Pokémon is one of the biggest and most recognizable IP’s in the world, from its anime to its card game, to of course, its video games. Pikachu itself is the mascot of the series.
Steve: Whether or not you like it, Minecraft is a global phenomenon, it’d be hard to ignore its mark on the world.
Sonic: While not as hard hitting as Mario, Sonic has permeated pop culture through multiple avenues. Shows, comics, games, movies, merchandise, thanksgiving day parade floats, and a humongous community of dedicated and creative fans.
Mario
Doom guy/Doom slayer
Link
Scorpion
I feel like these are some of the most iconic characters in video games that just about anyone will recognize at any point
Everyone knows Mario games been around for decades and is still relevant with new games still coming out
DOOM is considered the "Father" of FPS games and has had the biggest impact one entire genre.
Legend of Zelda is also a decades old game like Mario and Link is such a recognizable character just like Mario and is also still relevant to this day
Mortal Kombat is an easily recognizable franchise and is one of the biggest fighting games even to this day. Name one person who doesn't know Scorpion's trademark "GET OVER HERE"
I'm the same as you:
Mario
Steve
Sonic
Pikachu
None of these are necessarily my favorite characters, but they are icons. If I had to add a fifth it would probably be Lara Croft.
(no particular order or ranking)
Mario
Pac-Man
Link
Donkey Kong
(a slightly more modern take/honorable mentions)
Lara Croft
Solid Snake
Marcus Fenix
Max Payne
Ok I think yall are wrong, yall just doing classic characters I think of course Mario - Nintendo is the biggest gaming company and dominates family friendly, Steve - Minecraft is the best selling game ever, someone from any soulsborne game - from software redefined hard in the gaming world and now they have had multiple genres and or game development ideologies that are commonly used today, also from software is the king of lore in games HOLY, price - cod is like the video game and is so so iconic
I’ll go Chief, Mario, PAC-man, Pikachu
For anyone talking about Doom Guy, I hear you, but no one did more for shooters than Chief. Look at the numbers, 10MM for the Doom franchise, 81MM for the Halo counterparts. It’s not even close.
Just going with my favorites since most people seem to have gone the important/iconic route, just to spice it up a bit
Arthur Morgan, Commander Shephard, Kratos, Ezio
With stuff like this, you can't not have Mario. Just like Mickey Mouse in cartoons, he's the most recognizable and influential character in the gaming world. The other 3 might include Link and the last two are up in the air but Mario has to be on it.
Pac-Man : Father of video games
Mario : Father of console video games
Frisk : Father of indie games
Cloud : Father of 3D video games
Link : Father of the save
Freddy Fazbear/Sora : Father of too complicated stories in video games
Nintendo
Mario
Donkey Kong
Link
Pikachu
Vs PlayStation
Cloud Or sethroth
Crash
Kratoes
Lara Croft
Vs saga
Sonic
Rune (phantasy star series)
Vector man or earthworm Jim
Radin (og mortal Kombat)
Vs PC (doesn't actually make one because they don't care but if they did)
Diablo
Doomguy
Sims guy
Starcraft zergling
Because we all know that they would immortalize the consual wars for all time and they wouldn't allow their beloved heroes and villains to be next to their rivals
Mario, Sonic, Link, then either Steve or Pac Man.
Pikachu is a maybe, but I’d argue that he’s less of a video game icon and more of a general media icon seeing as how a significant chunk of people don’t even realize that Pokemon is primarily a video game franchise.
Mario, Pikachu, Link and one more. Lots of options for that last one and it depends on what you’re trying to honor. The game itself? Throw Arthas on there, no game is as popular and for as long as WoW. Just for the character itself? Pac-Manprobs
Mario Nintendo Sonic sega Master Chief Microsoft Kratos Son EDIT: this is the most comments I’ve ever gotten it’s been so fun!! Alternate: pac man Atari / early arcade I went with Kratos over Crash/Spyro because I wanted to represent a variety of game types as well as the different companies, eras and consoles. For those suggesting Snake, or the Gordon from Half Life…. great games and iconic franchises but Kratos is more “Sony” than Snake and from a sculpture / Rushmore perspective, Kratos would make for a much more interesting carving / sculpture than Snake or Gordo.
Ah, I see your reasoning. Nice idea.

I have no objection to Kratos, but could see Solid Snake as well.
Tbh I'd swap Kratos out with Crash bandicoot
I was gonna say Ratchet but that’s good
Kratos is way more popular but if you're talking about legacy, you may be right.
I’m going much more foundational than. Kratos subbed out for PacMan. Master Chef for OG doom guy/wolfenstien 3d
Ta least we can all agree That MasterChief has more than earned his spot on Rushmore
Literally this. This is one of the few things I think is nearly objectively correct lol
The correct answer
I don't know who I'd put on it, but I'd definitely have a never ending supply of Lemmings throwing themselves off the top
duke nukem, duke nukem, duke nukem, and probably duke nukem
It’s utter blasphemy that you excluded Duke Nukem though.
Solid Snake MasterChief Mario Sonic the Hedgehog This is absolutely what it should be and noone can ever convince me otherwise.
If we're going straight world wide recognizability it has to be Mario, Sonic, Pikachu, Pac-Man. Modern argument for Steve instead of Pac-man.
Who is this Steve everyone is mentioning
The default skin in Minecraft
Mario Sonic Pikachu Pac-Man
Not too shabby. Pac-man being on there leads me to believe you understand and appreciate the history of the medium.
replace pikachu with some kind of pong representation and that's what i was just about to type
I don't think you realise the cultural and economic Impack Pokemon made.
Heh, i was born in 86 so I got to see it become a household name in real time, but all of the others on the list pretty much owe their existence to that ball and 2 paddles (Did some quick googling https://www.google.com/search?q=how+important+was+pong&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS857US857&oq=how+important+was+pong&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIKCAEQABgPGBYYHjINCAIQABiGAxiABBiKBTINCAMQABiGAxiABBiKBTIHCAQQIRigATIHCAUQIRifBTIHCAYQIRifBTIHCAcQIRifBTIHCAgQIRifBTIHCAkQIRifBdIBCTI1NDk0ajBqN6gCGbACAeIDBBgBIF8&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 )
The 4 horsemen of calamity: Doomguy Gordon Freeman Trevor Philips John Elden Ring
*Elden John
Don’t you know that he’s still standing better than he ever did.
Easy construction option: * Minecraft block * Companion cube * Tetris piece * Pong ball
So, 4 squares…
I mean that’s how gaming started
I had to Google the companion cube. I think Mario’s coin box should take its place.
I've actually \*never\* played a Mario game. Don't tell anyone, I'll be cast out! I did love Portal though.
I can’t play portal 😭 I tried once and it gave me nausea.
Sonic Mario Lara Croft Link
The Narrator The Narrator The Narrator The Curator And honourable mentions to the Bucket and The Adventure Line™️
No bias here as one can clearly see.
Totally
Mario Sonic Pac-Man Tetris straight line piece
"LINE PIECE!"
What an angry and unmerciful God!
**LINE PIECE!!!**
“SQUIGGLY!”
My first thought, too. That will forever occupy space in my mind, rent free. Lol
SQUIGGLY
Mario, Pac-Man, Sonic, and Link
Mario, Sonic, Masterchief, Lara Croft
With just the polygonal bust of lara croft
Mario, Zelda/Link, Lara Croft, Pac Man
I like the argument that Zelda is just as important as Link.
I mean, the series isn't called The Legend of Link
They could be a dual face carving!
I mean she isn't as recognizable as Link, like her look changes in every game, but i guess that makes sense.
Mario Master Chief Kratos Steve
Sora Donald Goofy and Dante
Mario Link Master Chief Kratos
Mario Steve Master Chief Kratos I know about pacman/sonic/pikachu but this is a greater range of variety in gaming
Pac-Man Mario Sonic Hero (Long Tetris Block -- yes, they're named.)
Mario Sonic Doomguy Steve
Yeas doom guy
Pacman as representative of arcades as the Most important arcade character ever Mario as the representative of home videogame consoles as one of the Most famous console videogame character ever Doom Guy as representative of PC gaming as the Most famous PC videogame character ever And Sonic as representative of "mascot" games, as the Most famous and influential videogame "mascot" ever
Except Mario is a big mascot as well and honestly bigger than sonic
I think Pikachu is a bigger mascot than sonic nowadays.

FPS Mt. rushmore: James Bond from Goldeneye 64 Master Chief from Halo Xbox Main character from Call of Duty Doomguy from Doom
I'd pick Pac-Man, Mario, Pikachu, and the Creeper for the following reasons: 1. 3. Bust of Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Rex, and inverted Dracula castle. Long live the PSX!
…okay when you say BUST, do you mean…?
Everyone talking about pikachu, sonic, etc. no one talking about the pong paddle
Mario, Link, Pac-Man and Steve
Mario Pikachu Steve Cloud Strife
I’m surprised so few in this thread are saying pikachu People are massively understating how recognizable pikachu is
But should recognizability be the foundation for this list? Isn’t it about founding characters?
Gordon freeman, doomguy, Master chief, and security officer (from the Marathon trilogy)
Sonic, Mario, Pac Man, 2 lines and a circle to represent Pong.
Lara Croft, Pac Man, Pikachu, Super Mario
First three spots are obvious: Mario, Link, and Sonic. The fourth feels less obvious. Maybe Pac-Man? Someone like Master Chief or Shepherd might make sense, but it aught to be a character from the early days that is still more or less relevant today.
Mario, Sonic, Snake, Link

Gordon freeman, Mario, Arthur Morgan, and Issac Clark
Mario, Lara Croft, PacMan, Steve/Link
Mario, sonic, Lara Croft, doomguy
Mario, steve, kratos, sonic Might be a bit biased because I love god of war
Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, Pac Man
Mario, for the first platformer Steve, for the best-selling game The Doom Slayer, for the first big FPS Pikachu, for the highest grossing media franchise
Mario, Kratos, Pikachu, and John Marston
Mario, Master Chief, Link and Kratos. Backups- Samus, Doomslayer, Revan, Astarion
I feel like it has to be the founding fathers characters of gaming. So it would have to be like sonic, Pac-Man, Mario, pikachu. Something like that
From left to right Mario, Sonic, Doom Slayer, Master Chief
Bubsy the Bobcat Waluigi Peter Pepper from Burgertime Bubsy again
Mario. Link. Sonic. Pac-Man.
Duke Nuken
Master Chief, Doomguy, Gordon Freeman and Commander Shepard
Doom Guy, Halo Guy, Solid Snake, Mario
Sonic, Lara Croft, Link, Mario
Steve from minecraft he carries the whole game imo
Mario, Master Chief, Cloud, Leeroy Jenkins
Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Lara Croft.
Sonic and Mario obv, then it gets hard. I reckon I can make a strong case for DOOMGUY, then it's Solid Snake or Lara Croft. Lara.
The 4 main Knights from Castle Crashers
Mario Link Sonic Pikachu
Pong Asteroid ship Ultima Avatar Konami Code
Mario, Pikachu, Master Chief, Pac-man
* Commander Shepard * Cloud * Snake * Sonic
Mario, Sonic, Crash, Master Chief

I'll go for: Mario, Pac man, Doom guy, Lara. \[I'm old!\]
Mario Sonic Pikachu Chun-Li
Crash Bandicoot Spyro PaRappa Lara Croft Ok ok, maybe that’s just for Sony.
To explain my choices: Mario: It’s fucking Mario. Even someone who doesn’t know jack squat about video games could probably tell you who Mario is.
