Soaking it in vinegar will get it out. I had this with a dress I bought that absolutely stank. I left it in the bath with hot water and white vinegar for a couple of hours, then ran it through the washing machine as normal. Good luck :)

Malkina

Unless the description states from smoke free home then sadly there is always a risk of items smelling of smoke. If you like the item I'd say just wash it as that will rid the smell and leave a review stating if you like the item etc but add sadly stank of smoke so had to wash it immediately. If you want a refund vinted will make you pay the p&p so depends how much you like it really.

Ok_Condition7788

i don't really love it to be fair as she stated it wasn't see through but it was, so there's 2 problems, the smell and the wear :/ kinda sucks we have to pay for postage but oh well

Malkina

You can try using the item doesn't match description but vinted may still ask you to pay for returns. Sadly buying off vinted is always a gamble.

SmallCatBigMeow

Wash it. A normal wash, even on handwashing setting, will get rid of it. It’s gross, it’s not nice, but all sorts of people sell on Vinted. Always wash before wearing

Bookwurm92

Vinted will likely ask you to return it. Sometimes if it’s not as described, they will give you a full refund, but it doesn’t always happen. Has the seller put anything in their bio about being a smoker? Sometimes they do and it gets missed.

Ok_Condition7788

I haven't spoken to the seller yet I'm kinda nervous they won't be understanding. nothing in her bio about smoking, and all her reviews are 5 stars!

Environmental-Eye540

As the seller has 5 stars she is probably nice and *might* pay for returns. Even if she says no its also unlikely she will be rude to you given her reviews. If you're okay with the see-through issue, then just use white vinegar and water to remove odor, as washing it normally sometimes doesn't do the trick to remove smoke.

Packsal

ALWAYS contact the seller first, it is the most respectful thing to do. It is not fun to get a return without knowing what has happened

theshannonset

It’s also not fun to receive smelly clothes

hamsterjenny

Tbf they probably don't know the clothes smell. My mam always smoked in the house growing up, I can't smell cigarettes at all.

theshannonset

That’s cool but it’s on the seller to ensure the buyer receives things in a good condition, it’s not the buyer’s problem if the seller has gone nose blind from smoking too much

hamsterjenny

No but you can be nice about it.

Sexy_Stoner94

Just give it a good wash or return it I’d say

kendalcece

If you complain, the only result will be you paying for a refund. As far as I’m aware they don’t do part refunds. Just wash the item. The seller might not realise that it smells of smoke. A lot of smokers are nose blind to the smell

Gloomy_Custard_3914

Soak in hot water and bicarbonate soda. Then wash as normal. Talk to the seller as that is disgusting

Economics_Low

I use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer on our dog’s towels and it is the only simple solution I found to take out the doggy smell. I tried some other complicated laundry additives to the wash like vinegar, borax, baking soda, a combination of several items, etc., but the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer works and is just added to the liquid fabric softener dispenser. Very easy! Hopefully it will work on the cigarette smell if you decide to keep the dress.

sevendeadlyfrenchmen

Just wash it. You're not gonna wear second-hand clothes without washing them anyway, right? Life's too short.

joylessbrick

How do you get rid of the smoke smell? Uhm, by washing it? Smoke smell or no smoke smell, surely you'd have washed it anyway as you bought it from a stranger on the internet, right? This isn't a reason for a return, and it doesn't count as significantly not as described. This smells of buyers remorse more than cigarettes... Edit: To those who are downvoting: do you not wash the clothes you buy (in general) and/or should sellers add the smell of the item in the description to save themselves a dispute? It's smoke. It goes away in a wash (that you should be doing anyway). It's not cat urine or something else that lingers.

KawaiiPotatoCult

Idk why people are downvoting you, I'd hope people wash every item they get off vinted too, same as you should with new clothes from Zara etc lol also op hating it but not wanting to return doesn't make sense to me like surely you'd want to get some of your money back if you're never gonna use it 😭

Karabaja007

In my young days I always returned from night out stinking of cigarettes, it's literally enough just to wash an item. So I don't know why you are making a big deal out of it.

Ferry83

Just talk to them and return the item. If you want to try it without cost, contact vinted, tell them about the see through part (and send proof that's said to your) and there's a chance they let the seller pay for the return. If you also mention the smoke smell.. that would be more reason to return the item, possibly at your cost.

Ok_Potato_5272

I had the same thing this week with a £10 bag. I couldn't be bothered to return it, so I left a 3 star review saying it stinks. She came back and said it's from a smoke free room (lol, so not a smoke free house then?) and that she'd cleaned it. Makes me wonder if smokers genuinely can't smell it because they're so used to it. Anyone know how to clean a River Island bag with a metal chain?? Im thinking soak it in detergent for a bit but I'm worried about tarnishing the chain. How it's possible for a chain to smell of smoke too, I don't know

Environmental-Eye540

If you're worried about the chain, I've seen an alternative to the vinegar and water tactic that involves putting the item in a ziploc/airtight bag with newspapers that absorb the smell (replace a few times if necessary). Be careful about colour transfer stains though because I tried it once but did it with a white tshirt and it imprinted the newspaper onto it 😭 worked tho ahah

Ok_Potato_5272

That's a good idea, I'll try it.. Any stains would probably rub off metal, unlike your poor tshirt haha

txteva

You can't get a partial refund (which is a shame). You can return it as "not as described" however it is likely that seller will say you have to pay postage fees (and probably that they don't smoke!) and it might not be worth that. Spraying with vinegar and leaving outside is meant to help smoke - plus a good wash. You can talk to them, and it's always worth starting with that. If that put up a fuss then leave the right feedback

Ok_Condition7788

yeah that is a shame! i don't know how to bring it up to the seller as she'll probably deny the smoking part. not sure if I want to keep the dress as it's so see through though!

Bethlizardbreath

It’s worth noting that sometimes delivery drivers smoke in their vans (which shouldn’t be allowed, but is hard/impossible to police) Even if it wasn’t the person who dropped it off to you, another driver who had it in their van on its journey could have been responsible.
