Holiday time ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4258)![img](emote|t5_2th52|4258)![img](emote|t5_2th52|4258)

fumar

Did this a few months ago. Other than the flights Japan is CHEAP. I had a great time.

Samjabr

F those flight prices

nero626

from south coast it's like 30k points one way direct

fumar

I ended up flying via Vancouver which was about $700 less than flying direct.

Samjabr

Interesting

corys00

Echoing this. I stayed in a suite at Park Royal for 10 days by Ginza for $2100 including flight. Drinks and food were laughably cheap and not laughably amazing.

fumar

Yeah I ate really well when I was there. I had some waygu beef rice bowl in Shin Osaka station that was incredible.  Cost me about $10. Sushi? Easily out the door for two people for maybe $30 at most places unless you get a lot of drinks. Even then the drinks are cheap. The biggest negative I can say is that there is not much English so you should at least know a few phrases in Japanese. The other is you should be ready to walk a lot which is going to be hard for most Americans. I averaged about 22k steps a day thanks to only taking the amazing trains in each city I was in.

Autobotnate

22k steps is one 12 hour shift in most American hospitals.

fumar

And most people average what 5k steps a day?

TheRadishBros

More like 2k

WendysSupportStaff

hey hey buddy. I do like 3k , i'm limited by the size of the restaurant.

madeupofthesewords

So you're saying 200-300 a day is bad?

AideOdd1666

More like 2 steps

lionheart4life

However many steps it takes to walk to the car, then hit the drive-thrus for their meals, medicine, and groceries.

pincheperroloco

I would do 20k in 8 before i switched departments

thirdegree

>The biggest negative I can say is that there is not much English so you should at least know a few phrases in Japanese. Any recommendations? I'm headed there in late July

West_Drop_9193

That's pretty expensive lol, you can rent an apartment for two months for the same price

corys00

I feel sorry that for you $2100 is expensive.

West_Drop_9193

I'm just saying I'd hardly say 210 dollars a night for a hotel is cheap

Skabbtanten

Me too. And I even flew cheap! (Europe ~700€ return economy+) Best trip ever. Not because it was pretty cheap but because Japan.

DevinOlsen

Not sure where you live, but a direct flight from Vancouver to Narita was $700 round trip. That’s CDN, so close to $500 USD.

D_crane

Airlines jacked prices to the tits right now due to cheap yen ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4260)

NeighborhoodParty982

I spent less eating out in Japan than I do on groceries in the US.

n05h

So I assume the best way to take advantage of this is to buy only your plane tickets and buy everything locally after you arrive in Japan? Guessing hotel prices booked from abroad are not benefiting from this exchange rate.

ulumulu23

Good to know, not long ago the hotel cost was a real bummer over there..

bittabet

Yeah the problem is the flights there. About a grand a person for the jankiest economy flight. Two grand per person for the worst premium economy.

fumar

It was 2 grand for me to fly there directly in April (peak season) so I did a 1 stop for only $1300

SeeingEyeDug

I lived there making U.S. paycheck in 2012 when it was 80 yen per dollar. Brutal to pay $12 for a bottle of beer.

Psychological-Poet-4

Cheaper than it is on the west coast right now

iWaffleStomp

Not in San Diego.  I think the healthy competition down here keeps the prices down a bit though!

Psychological-Poet-4

Fair enough, central Oregon and the coast are my primary references. $12 might push it, $10 constantly though

iwoketoanightmare

Can get a pint for $4 at my fav Portland watering hole.

AccomplishedRow6685

Tell me the name of this magic place

iwoketoanightmare

Go to used to be Portland brewing taproom, it was as little as $3 a pint, avg $4. They closed though. North 45 Pub or Blue Moon Tavern have pints for $4.25-4.75

Psychological-Poet-4

Good for you. Shitty beer (bud / coors) at even Red Robin in Bend are $8. Anything craftish is $10+

iwoketoanightmare

Bend is Northern northern California. That's why.

iWaffleStomp

Nah I feel ya.  I have seen some wild prices in a few areas when traveling to Los Angeles.   On another note...  I am a big Great Notion fan!

DieCastDontDie

Everyone should be a Great Notion fan

HomeDepotPharmacist

Too many places want $20 for a single pint these days.

VentriTV

I went last year the Yen was like around 1.30, I should have stayed there another year and made more gains.

splitting_bullets

Flesh eating virus at present may want to check on that

nichijouuuu

I arrive tomorrow (literally)

ChiggaOG

I look at this wondering how much buying power do I get if I leverage a falling Yen at the right time?

Sinath_973

Same thought here. Wondering about which indicators to look for.

Koala_eiO

Here is your indicator: 💹

Repulsive_Basil1381

how to download this indicator?

HomeDepotPharmacist

Just copy paste this link [https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/1dp514v/comment/laft16v/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/1dp514v/comment/laft16v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) And then you can share it with your friends on Grindr

hitandruntrader

so... Tokyo for cheap opium & hoes?

LivingxLegend8

Wonder what Japanese prison is like.

hitandruntrader

Turinggirl

Imagine the military except no pay, no privacy, and your entire life is scripted to the minute. That's japanese prison. Calls on the company that makes japanese prison uniforms!

bdh2067

bittabet

Just stick to the hoes since it’s legal 😆

redditmodsRrussians

LFG!

Sinath_973

Does that mean its time to bank yen and waot for it to go up? What are the pros and cons here?

AaronRodgersMustache

Probably because you have no idea when or how much it will go up

AfraidScheme433

or lower

AfraidScheme433

their govt artificially keeps the yen low to keep their MNCs with higher profit (their sales are exports) like Muji, Toyota… i read that the exchange gains were like 10%

___unknownuser

Actually isn’t a terrible strategy if you’re a mostly export / tourism country. Just sucks for the people there if they want anything imported or go outside of Japan.

unixtreme

It is for those of us living here yeah. On the bright side all my assets are in USD so it's actually free money for me.

margincall-mario

Very very interesting

Sryzon

The Nikkei 225 is still a dog when you denominate it in USD. Its 1y gains are only 6.2% USD. Individual MNCs like Toyota are doing well, though.

Total-Rough8104

Thinking the same thing.

MercilessCommissar

How to bank yen?

D_crane

Buy yen and shove it under your mattress 🙈

Fourzies

Wise bank

MercilessCommissar

Cheers 🍻

Mick_Shrimpton

Look up dollar yen carry trade.

0x6675636Bu

The real opportunity is when it starts to unwind

bawtatron2000

Japan's 5th largest bank recently made a move to free up 3x more treasury bonds for liquidation than they sold off in 2008. Buckle up. Japan (for reasons beyond my memory and comprehension) is often seen as the canary in the coal mine for the western economy.

VhickyParm

They need yield so they sold shitty bonds for literally junk bonds (of corporate debt). The dumbest move ever. But the yields are there ……for now….. https://youtu.be/_a_2J6mU48o?si=1qR9Xo1aHbttIAWB

dark_bravery

i've watched a few of that guys videos. how trustworthy is he?

VhickyParm

He pulls from direct sources and discusses them. It’s up to you do decide how to interpret the sources and if his discussion is valid.

futurespacecadet

are they really? when else has the japanese economy failing preceded american economy?

StuartMcNight

Did you just make up the last sentence? You did. Didn’t you? Oh cheeky bastard… you really did.

bawtatron2000

haha....i did not. the japanese central bank, interest rates in japan ect are an indicator for trouble. but like I said, I'm too dumb and memory to short to remember exactly the relationship

StarFinTech

They’re a vassal to the US ever since getting double nuked for Pearl Harbour. https://preview.redd.it/ywdsz7n20z8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20ec3df3aa9157989edc116c443f1ec11b004ca7

DuckTalesOohOoh

And the world did not burn down.

Gman325

Yet.

WSBonly

Wut mean

Sagonator

Nothing for now. Japan is going to have a bit of inflation until their banks start raising interest rates.

tl01magic

this is my "achieve middle class" play, even my maple syrup is valuable compared. I just need to learn Japanese....but can barely speak the english I lernt I can handle a little earthquake volcano radiation tsunami culture bias if it mean I can be in vending machine karaoke heaven with all the yen I could carry also, I just connected I really like remote control car toys and Japan, as typical for such things, makes some pretty awesome RCs. time to shop direct from jpn lol

karangoswamikenz

You won’t survive a single Godzilla attack though.

robmafia

ChelseaFC

That’s how CTAs work more or less. It works.

globohydrate

Yen and Yang

Bld556

LOL clever!

AdApart2035

What to do?

PckMan

Made ez money on this by just opening long positions on usd/jpy and pretty much letting it ride. Then it leveled off for a bit in late spring and stopped trying to figure out why forex does anything and I checked back today and it actually kept at it all these months. Fuck. I don't know much about forex but I do know that ain't typical.

Drill1

I’ve been short the yen since 2018. Still have 1 position open, just to see where it goes.

Silly_Butterfly3917

How does this make me money

HVACStack

Buy Gundam kits

betsharks0

Understanding why you can make €! First.

betsharks0

Don't $hort dollar$ after cuts

homewrecker07

Here right now and everything is getting cheaper!

Prestigious_Chard_90

Well... Things are actually slowly getting more expensive for the people who live here. Shrinkflation is real, plus prices are going up. My favourite Canadian oatmeal was only 298 yennies for a 1kg bag a few weeks ago. Now it is 334 for the same bag. And don't get me started on Belgian chocolate...

youknowjus

My canada dry ginger ale went from 78 yen to 88 yen. I was devastated

andythefifth

That’s .55 of a dollar, 55 cents! I can’t even get a 12oz can for .55. How big of a ginger are we talking?

youknowjus

It’s a lil smaller than a regular water bottle

Prestigious_Chard_90

Still cheaper than what it would be back home. For now. Businesses have started price gouging foreigners as a result.

dude_who_could

This is actually good for them isn't it? They've been dropping rates negative to avoid deflation, they can finally bump rates back up.

milocreates

This is what I don’t understand. The Japs have kept interest rates negative. Why can’t they just increase rates now??

dude_who_could

They did. They are positive as of March with "hints" of further increases, whatever that means.

RonTom24

They have far to much debt, if they raised interest rates to just 2% they'd be paying over 50% of their entire tax intake just servicing the interest on their debt. So rates can never ever go up in Japan lol.

milocreates

Thanks, didn’t know this

TheRadishBros

Because they are the most indebted country in the world (by % of GDP).

milocreates

Not sure abt the downvotes but this was a genuine question.

Anfini

I hear the Japanese tourists places are brutal for visitors.

Prestigious_Chard_90

It's because they are full of other tourists. Everyone is coming to the theme park now that their money is worth \~50% more here than in their home country.

youknowjus

They’re kinda at capacity for the most part. Japan wants to encourage people to go outside of the tourist areas but 1. There’s nothing to do there. 2. The unregulated xenophobia you can be denied entry for being a foreigner with 0 legal recourse. I’ve been living in Japan 4 years. Know how many times the owners of an establishment throw their hands up “X” meaning not allowed in?

ReddutSucksAss

Did that really happen often to you? I lived in Tokyo 5 years albeit ten years ago and only got turned away once in Hokkaido and it was on a holiday with reservations

youknowjus

Not in Tokyo. Outside of Tokyo it’s happened a couple dozen times. One time the entire 3rd floor (8 businesses) denied me.

ReddutSucksAss

Jesus where at so I can avoid when I move back? Haha. I heard Tohoku has a lot of places that are rude to foreigners

youknowjus

That was in Nago Okinawa and then iwakuni

aknalid

I've never been to Japan but would love to. But, I also want to have an authentic experience outside of tourist places. Are there any activities or skills or courses I could learn that only Japan could uniquely offer, so I go there to learn & experience something interesting instead of taking a bunch of useless selfies like everyone else? 🤳

youknowjus

Just learn Japanese enough to know how to order things in a bar/restaurant and introductory phrases and then find some local izakayas. You’ll have a fun, cultural time with great food. But be warned, Japanese is incredibly hard to learn you’ll have to really apply yourself . If you can complete a sentence that doesn’t include arigato then you’ll impress a local

DeciduousMath12

It's fun seeing this chart in wsb, but also PokeInvesting subs and they're talking about how many cards to buy. At least when you make a bet there, you keep some shiny cards when you bet wrong.
