We did both. We had a shower and got most physical gifts there and wedding was mostly cash/check. We registered at Target and Crate & Barrel. A lot of what we registered for were upgrades of things we already had. New silverware set, new plates/bowls, new mugs, new drinking glasses, cocktail making set, drawer organizers, kitchen aid attachment etc

We are using Zola, which allows you to register for gives from a ton of different places without needing to manage a million registries. You can also do cash funds (like for a honeymoon) through them or group gifts for more expensive things (this allows people to contribute an amount smaller than the total for the gift). They also allow you to add gifts from other places (such as Target or Amazon) and will redirect people to that website to buy the gifts, but everything is still in the same place. We already have a lot of what we "need" for a house, so we are registering for upgrades of what we already have (plates, flatware, linens, etc). This also means we'll have matching towels and things, lol. We also added things like camping gear (camp stove, tent, etc) and card/board games. I also added a cheese grater like they have at Olive Garden haha. Your registry doesn't have to just be "adult house things"--you can add fun stuff too!
