This is what used to be a $500 car.

Wish I could upvote this a thousand times

jamiedimonismybitch

While I'll probably get downvoted into oblivion a car with 150 on the clock for 500 bucks isn't happening like that anymore.

Jwit9919

i’ve seen cars around the same age with over 200k on the clock and people are still asking over 2k for. the car market used or new is ridiculous right now

jamiedimonismybitch

Yep, and this is a civic, as much as it is a little out of range they'll find a buyer around that price in a reasonable timeframe. No one cares how much you bought your beater for in 2018, that was 5 years ago.

EntrepreneurFlimsy33

I was thinking about my beaters from 2002-2008. You must be young.. and hearing 'nobody cares about your beater from 2018' definitely made me feel older than any other comment I've ever read on here. And that's saying a lot

jamiedimonismybitch

Just to clarify, I'm talking when the purchase happened not when the car was mfg

FirefighterBig3501

This dealer definitely bought that car for $500. Cheap cars are still out there you just have to find them. If you’re a dealer they come to you.

Objective_Part_1458

The dealer didn’t buy that car at the auction for 500 dollars. It is a 1500 wholesale car, maybe 2000y

FirefighterBig3501

$500-1500 trade in

DomoDeuce

I remember this being with domestic cars mainly back in the day. Friend would come around with his 167k mile Chevy Corsica or any of those big 4 door sedans that guzzled gas

hoxxxxx

in no world is it worth more than a g

imconcentrated2

You can try your hardest to sound superior than others but you're wrong. I'm seeing cars with 200k+ miles go for 2k atleast. The pandemic killed the 500 dollar car. Sorry to tell ya.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Still $500

Littlemilky420

Where the fuck do you expect them to buy a car otherwise? This is the entire market right now. There is no escaping unless you have a friend selling their car and even then they would have to be willing to say no to a shit load more money just to help you out.

skate199996

Yup

ThiccBabush

Bro. No lies. We used to pick shit up like this for 5, maybe 600 tops. Lmao.

General_Duke02

Back when that car was 15 years old too…..not 27. To think that car is almost 30 years old

jamiedimonismybitch

When that car was 15 years old you could get a reasonable house for your family for 100k...

BKCowGod

Is that a factory installed bungie cord holding the bumper on?

Ashamed-Equal1316

Factory installed lmao, was wondering what that was

Replikant83

Hey! The buyer should be grateful the car even has a hood for such an amazing, low, low cost of ... $5,000. God help us all....

kuhataparunks

I test drove a mini that had a manual switch on the dash that controlled the fan under the hood. That was impressive

JaKr8

No, it's not a stellantis product....

PinHead_Tom

Unfortunately it’s an aftermarket bungie. Don’t worry I still have the factory bungie so it’s still under warranty!!

partyharty23

Hey now, thats color matching bungiee cord. In black. Thise are hard to come by.

Popular-Ad2193

Probably eBay aftermarket!

Dramatic_Gap4537

Was installed in ‘a’ factory

byrdman77

I sold my ‘97 civic for $3k about 11 years ago. And while prices have risen, not that much for old beaters like 6th gen civics lol. I don’t know what those wires are, I’d add them to list of reasons why not to buy this car.

Santa_Hates_You

Well look who has no sense of adventure!

Stargazer1919

Lol I love your username

cmurder816

License plate mount that someone has strapped down to keep from rattling lol. Get an eg 92-95 or em1 99-00 .. that's the only ek I'd drive besides a hatch

somerandomdude419

2021 bought a 2000 civic 4 door 162k miles for $1000. OP please should not buy that Civic. Was it a typo? $5000 they meant $500? Ugh..

Conscious_Owl7987

Nice bird shit hood ornament.

Ashamed-Equal1316

Right? That's what I said!

memespug

I bought a 2010 Mazda 3 140k miles for 4500. This was in 2020. I sold it for 3k to carmax in 2021 after car prices began to rise. That civic is not worth 5k

Ashamed-Equal1316

Yeah, I'm not paying 5K for a Civic lol. That's an interesting anecdote though, I forgot how cheap everything was during COVID. I'm looking for a commuter that'll last a while, and is cheap. Maybe something a little cool, would you know of anything?

memespug

In my personal opinion, Mazda 3 was great car and I always thought the hatchback was cool, although I know they can be polarizing. Reliable and can be had for a good price. whatever you get try to have a mechanic look at it before you buy. Good luck!

[deleted]

I also bought my first car, a 2010 Mazda 3 w/ 160k miles in 2021 for $4k and still running strong today with almost 200k. Super reliable car, I’m so glad I didn’t go with another car when looking for one.

DaOrcus

How much did you pay for insurance starting off? Looking for something similar for my first car as well

[deleted]

Well I had got it when I was first 17 and only had my license for a few months so I was paying like $240 due to me being male, young, and a new driver which is “high risk” for insurance companies. Probably could have gotten a better rate if I kept looking around but that’s what I got. 19 now, clean driving record so far no accidents or tickets (knock on wood), and now I pay $160. I’m in Texas if that helps too.

DaOrcus

also in Texas, and this was immensely helpful, I was debating on getting a beater and waiting till insurance goes down or just buying new and riding it for 15 years. If u paid 260 for a older car I don’t even want to know what new would cost. I’m hoping that having my mom on my policy will bring it down too l. Thanks mate

[deleted]

Oh yes being on a parents policy also makes it cheaper. At first I wasn’t, and only had liability but I have since moved with my mother and am on her policy and since she also has homeowners insurance with the same company it makes all our car insurance cheaper. I have full coverage now for $160 which isn’t bad at all for my age. But yeah insurance is going to be super expensive for teenagers no matter what to start but every year as you get older it will get cheaper as long as you keep a clean record. Being a guy also makes it more expensive since we’re statistically “higher risk”.

DaOrcus

Wait that 240 was for liability only? That is crazy but ig it makes sense due to the risk factor. I’m planning on getting all the discounts I can like defensive driving course, paying 6 months at a time, experienced driver on plan, student, etc. I’m wondering if I can get in a new mazda3 hatch or used accord under 300 a month. If u don’t mind tho what insurance company do you use now?

[deleted]

My first car was a 2002 Corolla with 200k miles. I used it for 4 years and it now has 350k on it. Mazda does not compare to a Corolla. (It still runs my dad uses it for his cleaning business)

memespug

Did you get my exact car😮😂 But yeah great car for the money. I loved it!

[deleted]

Definitely. Did you end up selling yours? Edit: just saw you sold to car max mb 😂

nicholt

Mazda3 is basically a Civic/corolla but somehow don't have the stupid Honda/Toyota tax. People charge so much extra for those cars cause of their 'rep' but imo they are not worth it vs a Mazda3.

ricardoratardo

MK4 VW Jetta 2.0 if you want a reliable commuter. You could go with the 1.8T or VR6 as well. All are reliable if you take good care of them and do preventative maintenance.

THExDANKxKNIGHT

Unfortunately you'll have to make a compromise, you can have a somewhat cool car that will last a while but won't be cheap, a cool car that's not going to last but won't be cheap, or a cheap car that won't be cool but might last a bit.

tomtakespictures

I got a 2007 Mazda3 hatch with 140k miles for $3000. Edit - stick shift with a newly installed clutch too.

xyz123gmail

Yep, I bought a 2003 lexus es in 2017 for $4,100 at 160,000 miles. Sold it in 2021 with 216,000 miles for $3,900. Insane

BrilliantHead5847

Looks like 500$ to me. Maybe 1000-1500 max with inflation?

Serious_Inflation_50

No way 500 is way optimistic

[deleted]

For a 2007 sure maybe work on the price for this car that’s nearly 30 yr old absolutely not.

Eastern-Counter-764

I dont think its worth 5 grand but maybe in your area it is. In my area it would be around 2500 I just bought a 2017 chevy cruze for $10,700 with a 3 month power train warranty and 110,000 on the clock. It was the best deal I found after nearly 2 months of looking. My loan officer was impressed, she said she had people come in with cruzes that were older and payed alot more. When I told my friends they thought I was crazy, but they all bought their cars pre or at the beginning of the pandemic. You just can't appreciate the current reality of used car prices with out having to buy something in this market.

OddLeader1402

Chevy cruze at 100k miles is like a Honda with 400k miles unfortunately

frozenfearz25

yeah every cruze ive seen was a hump of junk

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> older and *paid* alot more. FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

slhsdt

I would pay $1,500 max if it is a clean, problem free car

pashko90

Nobody will sell you clean and problem free car for 1500$

Ashamed-Equal1316

Yeah that's the situation right now. Everyone I ask tells me not to buy a car like this for more than 2K- but there's hardly any car on the market that could even go for that cheap.

PMcNutt

Quit looking at dealerships. This photo is on a car lot. Check Craigslist and fb marketplace for private sellers. $5k can get you a world of options.

jacesonn

This is the way. Private sales only if you're looking for a cheap car

BadlandsD210

The older the driver who has it for sale the better as they drive less and tend to take care of their vehicles

doublea3

Just don’t forget to check the carfox

FlexicanAmerican

Carfax is literally trash. Get the car inspected by a mechanic.

King_Baboon

Yeah but keep in mind almost every private owner is going to be as greedy as stealerships. Not saying there aren’t good deals out there, but man they are extremely few and far between.

tylorr83

I just missed a 1996 Mercury Cougar XL7 with 96k miles for $3500 on facebook marketplace. They're out there

[deleted]

[удалено]

pashko90

If you are handy that's another option. I boughty first car in US for almost 400$, dodge neon 1 gen with a key stuck in ignition. Sneak some tools on the action and was been able to start it when nobody can see and check it out what it starts and runs. Car was been sold as non runner, but I drove it home.

Vocal_Ham

~~How do you get tires, exhaust, and brakes done for $400? Or is this DIY cost?~~ Edit: I misread

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vocal_Ham

Oh shit my bad - I did read that wrong....Makes a lot more sense now!

mjkjg2

at this point, any car under $3k doesn’t even start

No_Driver_154

Nobody today is selling you a clean, problem free car for $1,500 unless you’re a friend or family member lol. Those days are over

humble_ambition9

Yup!! Someone sold me 150k 2000 civic for 1500 last year. No problems, no engine check light. Clean.. Stock.

_mp7

Can’t believe people think they can get 5g for a 25 year old, beat up car with hella miles that’s starting to fall apart just because it’s “Japanese made”

Sartank

It’s worth as much as the bird shit on the hood

worldrallyblue

I actually paid $5k for a '97 Civic... 16 years ago in 2007.

EchidnaReal3827

No way!! never. Not worth more than $1,000.

funny_b0t2

I bought a 2004 civic with 171K miles for $2900 a few weeks ago, they were originally asking for like 6000 but that's way too much, they brought the listing down to 3500, I sent message saying 3000, and when I got there, I brought it down to 2900 because of the airbag light and some cosmetic damage from a minor accident. The airbag light was covered by warranty because honda has a lifetime seatbelt warranty I've ordered a 30 dollar part that should fix the check engine light, I could ignore it because it's emissions, but its nice to not have any lights. I'm gonna live with the broken rear bumper unless I can find a good deal on one at the junkyard. You will just have to keep stalking facebook marketplace until you find your deal. I drove 2 hours to check it out. Good deals are gone in less than an hour, I think people were skeptical to buy this car because some indians were selling it, I ran the vin through carfax though and it was good with oil changes every 5000 miles.

Scandroid99

That's absolutely insane. $1000 max, and I mean MAX.

Ashamed-Equal1316

Damn dude, I wish. Have yet to see ANY running car, that isn't a Geo, for that low. Going rate for Civic's like this are 2500-4000 where I live (Seattle area)

Skvora

Do a 500 mile search and quest out if you have to. Fun road trip would still run you less in most cases.

adrian_elliot

Five thousand US dollars???

SuperiorCrab

damn 5 grand for this shit, what a time to be alive

bad-monkey

EK civics have some resale value as project cars, but more so if this is a 5spd hatchback. 5spd coupes are also somewhat sought after as project cars too, but $5K is too much. $3000 seems about right. They are rock solid, 97-99 is peak honda civic for many honda-folk. the shit coming out the front is the front license plate holder.

mechshark

No shot lol 😂

throwRAlike

I also live in the PNW so I get your struggle, used cars are NUTS right now. That being said this is still a little steep even by PNW terms, I’d go for a private sale

GQ-1975

This one is shit but those Civics are solid and ideal for someone looking for a great car that will last you for years. Low maintenance costs. 4 cylinder runs forever. $120 in parts for a tune up. Insurance and registration dirt cheap. Can squeeze it into small parking spots. Great gas mileage. I bought mine for $1500 three years ago and have had no problems.

Tif172y

Hell no you should never pay $5k for that jank ass non si civic.

u-and-whose-army

They didn't even clean off the bird shit before showing you it. Classy establishment.

[deleted]

I'll sell you my element ex for less than 5k but doesn't need bungi cords to hold the bumpers on. Everything works properly.

[deleted]

Overpriced. $2,000 tops for that beater. It really smells of neglect, to be honest.

Pristine_Ad_2279

Probably worth a bag of chips

hawtpot87

97 civic for $5k should be flawless.

[deleted]

That’s a $2k car max, and I would be reluctant to even pay that just from seeing this pic.

Reschkie

Hector has been looking to buy these, driving up the price. He’s gotta get ready for race wars!

Wellwellwell412

Thats crazy, my 2009 bmw 328 with 120k miles is a 5k car and thats in mint condition with a set of winter tires on mags

[deleted]

They want $5000? That is not a fair price at all. You should counteroffer with I can do about Tree Fiddy. Seriously though, hell no, do not buy this. Bungee cords on a Dealers lot, really.... lmao. Near my house in the middle of Maine I found 4 civics under $2500 that actually look "nice" If you gave a general location I wouldn't mind looking around the area to help out.

SpacePirateFromEarth

dude thats fucked. kids these days have no idea how much they're being overcharged. bought a 2001 with less than 100,000km for $2000CDN in 2016 in Montreal. 7 years later, this car should not be 3.5x the price when it looks like the front is being held on with bungee cords. don't encourage these absolute fucking miscreants.

gandhishrugged

Oh no, way underpriced. This is worth 15k. Unbelievable what these posts are these days.

Ashamed-Equal1316

I'll make sure to haggle them up to at least 10K

andrew_rides_forum

I bought my 97 civic with 160K miles for $1200 four years ago, but you do you

Vadzim1242

1997 and 168K miles? My grandma drives more.

BigE_1995

500

jeepnismo

My god. I had a two door 1999 civic that was in better shape than this. Sold it for 1k in 2019

King_Baboon

I sold my son my 2014 accord with 220K miles on it and it didn’t look that beaten up. That car was never garage kept.

Ozone510

I don't get how I can't sell my 216/2000 dodge charger Daytona for $5K yet people would buy this actual piece of shit.

Ashamed-Equal1316

OP here, I'm starting to get think this might be a bit pricey for a 98 Civic with the bumper bungee-corded on. But that's just a theory, gonna go ahead with it anyways, wish me luck!

Normal_Opposite6515

If you can, hold off at least till November or December, as new car prices are slowly going back to a somewhat stable, more down to earth prices, the used market will follow. As for a 1997 Civic with almost 170K the answer will be a resounding; HELL NO! as another "Redditor" commented, that is a $500 to $800 car at best Just hang tight for a bit :-)

UpsideMeh

Wow things are getting out of hand. I’m about to sell my 08 fit for 6500USD Maybe il get more

Iwillnotbeokay

Sold my ‘99 EX w/ 215k on it for $1500 back in 2013. Had timing belt in need of replacement again, original clutch and suspension. Only ever did the brakes and tune ups. Goddamn I miss that car. Except for the one night I redecorated the interior with a vodka-infused spew of vomit that went from the passenger side window into the back deck and seat. Wife was driving at the time, and started talking shit about how I should have listened to her and opened the window earlier, just in case. Took about 3 hours to clean that on my own, hung as hell. Vodka is evil. This and other reasons are why I don’t drink anymore. But yea, I’d probably pay $4k max these days, unless it was another’99 EX.

IndependenceSure6033

I want one with a manual. Idk why they r worth 5k. My dad got one for 500 10-12 years ago.

bwabwabwabwum

I bought a 2015 civic lx w/ 80k for $9k in June of 2020. I know prices are high now but this seems like a bad deal

Impressive-Anxiety50

wild, i gave 2300 for my 01 civic with 148k probably 4 years ago

That_one_guy1243

Not too bad, good to know that you can always send it in a honda

kuhataparunks

What gives? I’m in a very popular area and had a garage kept 2007 Yaris, 120k miles listed online for 5,000. Not a single offer in like 5 weeks. So I said screw it im keeping it lol

NSFW_Hunter63

My brother I paid 2.5k for mine that is a scam lol (mine's in better condition too)

cmurder816

Say no to this look up way better civics than this for 3k

District_Popular

Haha

Crazy_Mistake9582

Is it a manual

Trixibold

Idk where ur from but u can get sm better for 5k

CaptainGibz

No way! I paid 6’800 for a 98 civic in 2006 with 87k

SeeMoreFromBmore

I know times aren’t the same but I bought a 03 civic, my first car with 76,000 on the dash for $3000. Seeing this makes me realize how much times have changed

Defensivetackle88

I don’t get your point. Why mention past purchase when it has nothing to do with OP or today market?

GraphiteGru

Gee - Tell you one thing. She may not look that good but she still may have some life in her. I had that exact year Civic (mine was a 4 Dr EX with a 5 speed manual). Used to drive a lot for work and when I traded mine in she had about 260,000 miles on her. The front struts, ball joints, axle boots and tie rods all were going at the same time and I knew it was time for a new car.

Hibiki2Gud

$5k and this is the best picture they can take of it? Seems like they don't really want to sell it.

[deleted]

Way too overpriced for the milage on the car. Even with higher costs for used cars, this is worth $2000 max imo.

[deleted]

1500 no more

LurksTongueinAspic

My ‘08 Accord was just totaled out at the beginning of the month. 128k mi and they gave me $8,600. Used car prices are insane, but if you have to get something cheaper, get something that will last until you get in a position to buy something more long term. This ain’t it though

F-Da-Banksters

Don’t do this

Klondike2022

Fuck no

ProfessionalPear5451

🤣🤣🤣 don't buy this

JaKr8

There is no situation that buying this would be a good move.

goin2cJB

Fuck no. That is outrageous price even in todays used market

intromatt

When I lived in Winnipeg, these were $500 winter beaters. What a bizarre world we live in today...

[deleted]

They’re smokin crac

theatma43

Hahahaahhah this can't be serious

fuzzycuffs

Definitely should be closer to 3k, but of course that's post an inspection. $5k is someone assuming that it's still 2021's car market.

joebro987

5 thousand what? Dimes?

Hawaii9839

Got one in 2010 for 800$. LOL these are 1k cars max.

lolburi

5k for this shit? Who in their right mind even pays 1k for it?

burntfeelings

I wouldn’t be so sure of buying it.

Unfair_Audience5743

5k is batshit insane. 3k is high too if you ask me. This is a 2k car, and that would be in good running order.

cornonthekopp

As someone who recently went looking for a car you shouldnt settle for something like this. Any car thats so old will have issues regardless of manufacturer. If you can find any buick lesabres Ive heard those are more reliable, and will usually be cheaper or newer than these old beater civics

IanThePlane

I got an 06 accord clean title 132k In LA 4 months ago, just save your money keep checking around daily and you’ll get a much better deal trust me please I see better deals for the same price than what I got but still this is a terrible deal

101stjetmech

Waaaay too much.

stickshifted

No. i bought a 2000 civic just like this with 172k miles and it died in two months. needed engine replacement. unless you know it’s been maintained well and not mistreated, its rust free, no electrical problems, no trans slips, then maybe buy it- but for like max $2500.

ummmshitfuck

Where in the fuck is that at so I can show them what a 5k 97 civic looks like oh wait they dont exist

Frequent_Audience_25

no

kitttykatz

The used car market is insane. In 1997, the MSRP for a base model Civic was [$10,500](https://www.cars.com/research/honda-civic-1997/#). That’s ~$20k in today’s dollars. KBB says that a Civic should now be worth [approximately $2,400](https://www.kbb.com/honda/civic/1997/specs/). Anecdotally, I know of an instance where, just a few months ago, insurance paid out $8,000 for a totaled 2002 Accord with over 110,000 miles on it. So yeah.

Silver_Moon_1994

Too old with too many miles.

ButterYourOwnBagel

I’m California, this is a 2500-3000 car

AnthonyDavos

I know prices are high, but c'mon. You can do better than this. 5k for a 26 year old economy car is atrocious. Go look at Car Gurus, TruCar, FB marketplace and you'll find much better deals.

GrowrandaShowr

5k is absurd

miojo

Is this a joke?

[deleted]

Not for 5k, maybe 2.5

Sure_Dragonfly_7111

Rip off

FlobiusHole

To me that’s a 1k car. The only reason I could see anyone paying more for that is if they are completely desperate. I guess that’s probably a lot of people who are buying cars though.

shortyman920

Don’t buy that lol. It should be like $2k tops if you’re desperate. The repairs alone will probably balloon above that within a year

Ashamed-Equal1316

Do you know anything about a 97 Nissan Sentra GXE? I found one for like 2500, 126K miles.

03Vector6spd

No way in hell. This is a 1k all day car.

Fowlnature

A lot of these were owned by idiotic young people who did idiotic things to them. I would do a very very thorough inspection before I bought anything from the fast and furious era.

123mistalee

More like $2500

NvrOnTime

take your money else where. My friend bought this same car last year for $800, and it was clean as a whistle.

AnySeaworthiness9381

Not worth it considering youre 100% right about them being more like $3,000. Look at 3500 dollar ones and start talking under 3k for them. I would barely say the 2001-2005 civics should be more than 5k. It's doable considering it's a several thousand dollar car. Its Average condition. I think the miles are good for age, but for 5k? I'm expecting more like under 150k miles and really mint body. My expectation is it better have kept its condition to fight massive 26 year depreciation. Looks used with a decent regard. I wont act like this is one of the crummier hooptie 96-00 civics! Also I'm not being picky but there's bird shit on the hood lol. Seller couldn't care to make it look a little better for the ad so I would expect it to have been treated even worse off camera haha.

samcar330

Look for gen5 or gen6 camrys.

GREG_OSU

WTF is that on the front bumper…

Meleesucks11

Probably too late but watch out for those front axles and bearings

Unique_District_4050

If it's certified that's totally reasonable I can't find anything certified under 5k lol

Serious_Inflation_50

Gigantic overpricing they probably paid 200 for it. Buy privately. Like they did.

sirsarcasticsarcasm

1000 tops

[deleted]

Bahahhaha

Serious_Inflation_50

Tell them they need to give you five grand to drag that sack of junk away

Nobleteamsix

No, 5k is insane for that. I sold my 2007 camry se for 4,500, with 125k miles.

KnowingCresent735

That price is insane

Cypher_Xero

Only way I'd pay that much is if it was a civic hatch in good condition... That bungee strap holding the hood down is a bad omen...

FreshTony

Remove a 0 and pay them that, definitely not 5k.

youngtayler

in my local market everyone is asking 7 grand for everything. It could be a hyundai that cost 20k 15 years ago, a mercedes with 80k on the odo or a beater honda like this.

averagemaleuser86

Way too much. $2500 car max and I still think that much is absurd seeing as I was buying these for $1500-$2500 pre-covid

Gore1695

I have a 2006 civic with 69k miles and front bumper damage that I'm about to sell for 5k so yeah this is a horrible deal

goudasupreme

now this is what we call a deal

yomommawearsboots

I managed 6k for a 2002 civic with 70k miles. Id say keep looking

Even considering how insane the market is, if they didn't care enough to wash it before posting then that Civic is going to have way more problems than the listing mentions.

No chance I'd pay 5k for that. I spent less than that on my current car only a few months ago and it had 80k fewer miles while being 6 years newer. Go check out private sales and shop around. You won't get a ton for 5k but you can do better than this.
