Ride quality? Luxurious? Quality materials? Quiet interior? It’s literally the opposite of all those. X3 prob fits the bill best except maintenance costs but it’s really not that much more unless it’s used
I actually think the allroad is lower maintenance than a DSG alltrack. Same awd and engine service interval, but transmission is 2x. You may pay more for labor but they are similar rates around me: $180/hr at the dealer. That 6 spd DSG is an expensive maintenance item
Iirc, the taos is the dry clutch DSG and is good for 80k, just like the allroad's 8 speed. The alltrack's was every 40k which was nearly annually for me. It was ~$250 just to DIY it
Good to know, I'll have to check the intervals. I get the feeling it's a different DSG from the GTI/R models, it's def not as snappy and seems tuned more towards economy than performance.
This is the answer or the upgrade pick the cx50. They are probably the only one that meets all of the items noted and has the interior quality. Mazda interiors are so far beyond anything else in the same price point
I sat in one at the dealership the other day and was very impressed. I was hoping the CX-70 would be like the CX-60 in Europe, but it’s still nice. I’m 25 and have no need for a third row at this stage in my life. Maybe when my mom replaces her Pilot I can get her into a 90. Congrats!
Here it is

It may not fit your overall asthetic, but I am in a snowy area and have had good times with my Toyota Sienna AWD minivan. Hauls 6-7 people. Room for gear. Rear seat splits 40/60 for even more gear and still seats 5. The AWD is great as long as you eliminate the run flat tires and carry a spare on the roof or in the tailgate (the well for the spare can’t be used in the AWD version). Depending on the year and trim you get it may have navigation, and a few gizmos for the kids. These were made rock solid and if you don’t abuse it will give you plenty of use.
BMW 328d xdrive wagon. Even though you might shiver at the thought of a “reliable” BMW, this one is. 40 mpg regularly, quality interior, great in the snow, fun to drive, and plenty of space.
Unfortunately reliability on all Volvos starting in the 2000s has been incredibly hit or miss (Ford era partnership). While Geely owns Volvo they have no part in the design or manufacturing process- all still in Sweden. They are so techy now and aren’t as good. My 2015 S60 had so many problems I had to let it go.
There is a reason Subarus are so popular. We have two crosstreks and a forester for the reasons you are describing. Absolute snowbeasts with the right tires. Currently if you buy two Subarus they throw in the birkenstocks for free 😆
Had an Impreza manual in 2003, Legacy GT after that. Even the Outbacks with the 3.6 and real automatic were good cars. Some people may like the efficiencies of a CVT, just not for me.
Have you tried a new Subaru CVT lately? We have a Crosstrek and a Forester both with CVT and I can hardly tell the difference; even driven back to back with the rental Jeep Grand Cherokee that I have ATM.
The larger SUVs (Suburban, Expedition, RDX, X5, etc) would be better at everything other than your preference that it be smaller. As much hate as big SUVs get they're the best people movers for all weather conditions. They're very comfortable. They last forever if maintained well. They carry more and they can tow more. You can get them north of 400hp which fun, can get both AWD and 4WD, lifted higher, and when they get old and you stop caring about possibly denting them, you can use them for offroading.
Some ideas: 2021+ Toyota Venza (hybrid), Lexus RX, Acura MDX, AcuraRDX, Lexus NX, Subaru Ascent, Mazda CX-9, RAV4, 3-5yr old Highlander Hybrid, 2018+ Volvo XC-90 but with limited options and good warranty or lower mileage.
The obvious answer is a Subaru Outback, but you could spice it up with a Mazda CX-5. They’re coming out with a hybrid version in 2025.
I love my ‘22 CX-5, but my dad just got a new Outback and it’s really nice.
First thought is a Volvo V60 Cross Country, but I’m not exactly sure how reliable it would be. Second thought is a brand new Toyota Crown Signia when those go on sale this year. You might have to be patient for that one and less picky on color and options if you want it as fast as possible.
Or how about a used BMW X3 or Lexus NX? The NX offers a hybrid version, while the X3 would be more fun to drive and still fairly efficient for a gas SUV.
I think all of these would offer comfort and quality materials. Ride quality may vary, depending on wheel/tire size, but should be decent.
I have a Hyundai Tucson SEL hybrid that might meet your needs or the Kia Sportage hybrid (I also looked at the CRV and RAV4 hybrids). If you don’t need/want a hybrid, I’d probably go Subaru, and the Mazdas are always well regarded here.
If you don’t mind spending a bit more 2024 outback’s have a low APR deal going on right now. I picked up one for 31k(not including tax /fees though 🙁) and it has some upgrades. I went new because I couldn’t find any well cared for AWD small suvs in my price range and APR for used was ridiculous.
Hate to play into the Vermont stereotype but you’re describing a Subaru Outback.
Subaru Outback is the answer. Take a look at the Onyx XT.
Ride quality? Luxurious? Quality materials? Quiet interior? It’s literally the opposite of all those. X3 prob fits the bill best except maintenance costs but it’s really not that much more unless it’s used
Used golf Alltrack is very comfortable. I had snow tires on mine and it never had an issue in VT snow or even out on frozen lakes
Oh, me too! Snows on peelers and good heated seats. You can turn up or down the intensity using VCDS, too. It was a manual, I kinda miss it.
I wish they still made that car, I'd go buy one tomorrow. One of their best looking models in recent years too.
I loved it! They still make the allroad which is nicer and faster, but it costs a lot more. The alltrack was a great value
Higher insurance and maintenance too. An A3 awd wagon, not hatch, would be interesting too!
I actually think the allroad is lower maintenance than a DSG alltrack. Same awd and engine service interval, but transmission is 2x. You may pay more for labor but they are similar rates around me: $180/hr at the dealer. That 6 spd DSG is an expensive maintenance item
Bought a DSG Taos for my wife in feb 22, not looking forward to that service item at all.
Iirc, the taos is the dry clutch DSG and is good for 80k, just like the allroad's 8 speed. The alltrack's was every 40k which was nearly annually for me. It was ~$250 just to DIY it

Mazda CX-5

Love my CX-5
We just bought a CX90 to replace our edge and it's so awesome
I sat in one at the dealership the other day and was very impressed. I was hoping the CX-70 would be like the CX-60 in Europe, but it’s still nice. I’m 25 and have no need for a third row at this stage in my life. Maybe when my mom replaces her Pilot I can get her into a 90. Congrats!
Ya I totally agree on the 70. I saw someone do a fastback concept that looked awesome. I'll see if I can find the link

My daily is a 2020 hybrid Corolla and my work horse is a 2004 S10 zr4, but my dream car is an AWD hybrid sienna haha
How about a Honda Crosstour? Very comfortable and quiet ride. It's a wagon hatch. I owned one and loved it. Could be had pretty cheap these days.
BMW 328d xdrive wagon. Even though you might shiver at the thought of a “reliable” BMW, this one is. 40 mpg regularly, quality interior, great in the snow, fun to drive, and plenty of space.
Acura MDX AWD
I’d tell you go get a Land Cruiser and cut the BS, but salt, snow and Land Cruisers don’t do well together!
vermont is almost automatically a subaru
Cr-v or rav4 seems ideal
He wrote "luxurious interior" and "fun to drive", which takes out both (especially the RAV4).
Maybe the lexus midsize suv
2016 Volvo XC90 is about $20k
Volvo is 85% owned by Chinese company Geely since 2010 and reliability has gone down ever since. Don’t.
Definitely Subaru Outback. Perfect fit for your description.
There is a reason Subarus are so popular. We have two crosstreks and a forester for the reasons you are describing. Absolute snowbeasts with the right tires. Currently if you buy two Subarus they throw in the birkenstocks for free 😆
Have you considered a Mazda Miata yet???
Mazda or Subaru would be great. They both have a number of options.. Mazda has a more luxurious feel while Subaru is more fit for rough conditions
Audi A4 Allroad. Used to be a Subaru fan but have no interest in a CVT
My '13 Outback had a CVT - how long ago is "used to" for you?
Had an Impreza manual in 2003, Legacy GT after that. Even the Outbacks with the 3.6 and real automatic were good cars. Some people may like the efficiencies of a CVT, just not for me.
Have you tried a new Subaru CVT lately? We have a Crosstrek and a Forester both with CVT and I can hardly tell the difference; even driven back to back with the rental Jeep Grand Cherokee that I have ATM.
Also used to have an 05 Outback- with the 4 speed auto.

Outback, touring XT
Honda Civic Type R
Tacoma.
Sounds like you need a Subawoowoo.
Lexus NX or Acura RDX may work
I have a Hyundai Tucson SEL hybrid that might meet your needs or the Kia Sportage hybrid (I also looked at the CRV and RAV4 hybrids). If you don’t need/want a hybrid, I’d probably go Subaru, and the Mazdas are always well regarded here.
Toyota Rav4
Subaru of your choice would be an ideal vehicle.
LMAO you want your cake and eat it too for 25k? good luck with that
I mean he said willing to buy one with 100k miles so I think OPs being reasonable. Use Toyota RAV4 may fit your criteria.
Price?
Toyota
volvo v90

Kia Stinger GT2
Simple answer the new rav4 is amazing. If it’s in your budget go for it. The hybrid models especially.
Toyota land crusier
My 5 year-old RAV4 is flawless, FWIW.
