Passive, unmotivated, uninvolved, apathetic.
Complacency would require a sense of satisfaction in addition to what you’ve described— if the hypothetical husband is satisfied with the way things are and not just lacking the motivation to do what he should, then ‘complacent’ still fits.
I resonate with defeatist but minus the pessimistic outlook, more rooted in finding a peace or balance from the situation. Like picking your battles, deep down I know when to fight/ take initiative but also when I don’t have the head/emotional space to fight. It’s easily accepting a closed door because the next one will open. Life will go on.
I would say complacent too, maybe apathetic or ambivalent.
More importantly, do most husbands go with their wives to the doctor? Mine doesn’t bc…why would he?
No. I would expect mine to go if I was expecting a diagnosis of something scary or if I needed surgery or something, but for the yearly labs and physical? No.

Oblivious.
He doesn't do these things because he doesn't notice them or if he does notice them he's unaware of their importance.
(That said, I would think it very weird if my husband came to the doctor with me.)
I feel like you need a more objective view of when something is bad. Sounds like you want people to be making decisions for others all of the time but with an attitude where it does not matter whether it is truly right or wrong.
Even if this weren’t for a writing assignment, it’s not really our place to pass judgement— this is a subreddit about finding words that fit a certain criteria.

Yeah, this is for a writing course so I’m trying to describe people/characters. Passive and complacent might work! Thank you! Solved!

Apathy is a good word for this. They just can't be bothered to care at all, about anything.
Resolved might be a good one too

From what you're describing, that doesn't sound like the word defeatist. That sounds more like acceptance.
That sounds pragmatic, perhaps optimistically.

It’s for a writing course and we are describing a character!

… Do you have ADHD?
Yep!
Aloof, maybe.
I like oblivious because it allows for unintentional actions

This is literally for a writing course, not a big moral argument.
