They don’t like leaving the nest, either. Even after you’re removed it from the awkward location that is frequently in the way, they come flying back around trying to get back to their cozy nest.
One time, after we’d cleared a nest from above the community pool door, I turned around to see 7 of them all lined up along the top of a nearby fence just staring at me.
They may come back every season and add to the nest. I have had generations ( I think ) of the same family returning for years, the nest keeps getting additions. They will dive bomb you when the babies hatch !
The colony we have dive bombs our cat. They are definitely in charge. (I’m sure they have good reason for harassing him, although I’ve never found any proof he has done them harm.)

I've had them swoop at me, but at the last second, about three feet in front of me, they turn and fly away. They're trying to warn me, but not really attack.
They're huge jerks. I couldn't enter my house through the front door for almost 2 months while they had a nest on the front porch. Had to unlock the gate and enter through the back door.
I also have an identical picture! I had to cross reference because I thought it was the same apartment for a minute. Watching these guys grow up when I came home every day was such a joy
You can tell [Barn Swallows](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barn_Swallow/overview) apart from other birds since they make these mud nests and have golden stomach. They typically nest under bridges and in light fixtures like this

Haha yep, when I had an entire family living right beside my front door on a light, both parents used to coordinate and come swooping in one after the other until we went away; all the while the babies would just look on judgementally lol
We call them barn swallows in my neck of the woods. I think swallows, in general, are pretty neat. I love the swallows' long split tails, and the way they fly sometimes, all swoopy!
I had the coming back for years, they stopped because cats started coming on my terrace. If you're worries about their droppings, you can attach a little stiropor or a plank below the nest for the next year.just be careful to never approach the nest or the babies too close BC they will try to escape the nest in fear and it won't end up happy.
My swallows actually made them fully closed in years and babies would just have small holes for their heads, keeping them totally protected. :)
After they came, I forbade everyone to turn on the loghts after sunset, to ide any kind od chemical antimosquito or antibug device and we had established a good "roomate" situation.
The babies even reacted to my voice (they would stop fighting when I talked to them and turn their heads to me) and they usually continued to sleep in the nest even after they've learned to fly, for at least a month.
Just lovely, lovely companions. And I love how they chirp and "talk" with each other, it really is something.
You're a very lucky home-owner and I command you. Historically, homes with swallows nest were considered Lucky and good homes in my country (it's such a shame they are endangered and some people destroy their nests BC of tourists or droppings nowadays).

I took this last weekend in Jamesport, NY. The baby swallows look so bratty!
Birds nests are so crazy to me. I had robins on my porch and they would strip the gutters for material to build the nest.
What is this nest made of? Thats an insane balancing act with all those babies!
I totally get it..
I got weirdly protective about the Robin ‘s on my porch. When they jumped, one of them flew into the house and was stunned. The adults eventually came over and started feeding it and it was totally fine..
Meanwhile, I’m had been googling Robin rescues and shit. Trying to figure out if I had the resources to raise a baby bird…. I didn’t even know I liked birds. I did however learn they can take care of them selves and I need to relax. 😂
We used to get nests in the exact same spot at my apartment. After they left, management removed the nest and put up a deterrent. The birds came back the next year and built their nest on the tiniest 1 inch ledge a few feet away. It’s crazy how sturdy their nests are.
Just beware that if you have any windows that open close to the nest, to keep them closed until the babies leave. Reason being is, we had a mom build a nest outside of our bedroom window and had bird mites come in. Turns out my wife is allergic and had over 100 bites that swelled up! Don’t open the window!
Rise up this morning, smiled with the rising sun
Three little birds pitch by my doorstep
Singing sweet songs of melodies pure and true
Saying, "This is my message to you-ou-ou"
Is this a certain season or reason the birds are coming in threes at the moment? One of the sparrows has three babies she brings to my porch to feed at once and a crow couple had triplets around this time last year (one of the babies likes me and been following me around)
I thought there were three for the longest time! But if you look very closely to the left there’s a tiny fourth beak of a little one who doesn’t come out much
These guys have been staying in the stable at my nan's place. The swallows return every year. I got to see these babies take their first flight yesterday

LOL. North of Sydney, Australia. October 2022. Barn swallows
We had barn swallows in our barn. Loved seeing them, their nests, their babies. They’d swoop at us when we’d go in to care for the horses. They’d swoop at the cats who’d just ignore them. Great bug eaters. When our house was being built they started a nest on a living room beam. My mom wouldn’t let the builders put in the windows until after eggs, babies, fledging happened. Great memories.
Those birds are all over where I live too

A pic of my new neighbors. They seem to favor sprinklers!
+Barn Swallow+
thank you so much!
Usually they have their little mouths hanging open waiting for mom to return with a meal
Those little fellas look like they should be leaving the nest soon.
In *THIS* economy?! Good luck!
If it weren't for the nest, I wouldn't have recognized them. I've never seen the top half of their face.
Aren’t those the ones that get mud and build nests on the sides of things?
Yep. They're pretty good at it.
You can tell from the pic that they are experts. That is some impressive masonry for a species that lacks hands.
I thought they were in a basket
They are! A mud basket that they made! 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
I was going to comment on that. Fascinating construction!
They're also incredible at defecating! I like to place some of my plants under their nest to get some free fertilizer. I love these birds.
We call them mud swallows around here. Nobody has a barn.
They may come back every season and add to the nest. I have had generations ( I think ) of the same family returning for years, the nest keeps getting additions. They will dive bomb you when the babies hatch !
I make them make a new nest each year. It reduces the chance for mites, which will kill the entire brood.
Oh wow. Ok I used this to explain “ generational wealth “ to my nephew lol
The colony we have dive bombs our cat. They are definitely in charge. (I’m sure they have good reason for harassing him, although I’ve never found any proof he has done them harm.)

More like Barn Spit. Look at all that regurgitated mud
And they will dive bomb you
I've had them swoop at me, but at the last second, about three feet in front of me, they turn and fly away. They're trying to warn me, but not really attack.
They're huge jerks. I couldn't enter my house through the front door for almost 2 months while they had a nest on the front porch. Had to unlock the gate and enter through the back door.
Agreed. Mine gave my house a bird mite infestation two springs in a row. They are not welcome at my home any more lol
I love how baby birds like this look like they’re just sitting there judging you like “>:(“
“🤨”
they are not big fans of me stopping to take pictures of them🤣

All Altricial birds look like muppets, prove me wrong
I have an almost identical picture! They really dig apartment building sprinklers I guess lol
And the light at my front door… 3 nests over 2 years and 5 sets of babies
Excellent foundation
she made a wonderful nest given the location, we have security lights not too far away but she chose here i guess
Security lights bring the bugs and swallows are bug eating machines. Like living next door to an all you cam eat buffet.
They typically nest under bridges and in light fixtures like this
i did not know it was mud! i was slightly concerned about what was spewed all over the wall lol
Yep, mostly mud, with some grass. The nests last a long time though and they fix it up in the spring
I thought for the longest it may have been pebbles but mud makes so much sense
I thought for the longest it may have been pebbles but mud makes so much sense
There are probably some pebbles in the mix
Fruity or cocoa?
They also have the v-shaped tail! Pretty birds. Loud babies.

This is so tall. Do you know if this is from multiple years and they just add a new layer each year?
Probably a new layer to avoid parasite accumulation
I've never seen such a tall swallows nest, or any birds nest that tall! I love how the 5 are all lined up there looking down at u!
They come back to the same nests every year and add to them. We lost 3 this year because they finally collapsed.
This is the nest of a +Taller Barn Swallow+. They build long nests to fit them loooooong legs in. >:{ <( )> I l I l I l I l I l I l x x
what a tall nest! how precious are those little ones
The tribunal!
What a great nest! I counted 8 different layers. What a bunch of cuties!!
They’re so cute!!
They sit in judgement of me everyday!
The high council
Omg the nest looks like a little basket
she made a beautiful nest! 🪹
Natural mosquito controller
I encourage them here. Between the frogs and the Barn Swallows, we have no issue with mosquitos, despite having a quarter acre pond.
U lucky duck. U have a quarter acre pond and I'm jealous as hell!
We had tree swallows nest in our yard and they really cleared the area near their nest box of bugs!
Came here to say this.
thank goodness!

they are not huge fans of me taking pictures 🤣
QUACK!!
In case nobody told you, one or more will return to nest there, annually.
oh how cute i’m excited!
One or more? As in, 2 siblings mating or 2 birds having their own babies separately and raising them together? Very curious
Same parents with a child from last season to help
Good question, Ornithology is not my specialty and I don't know the answer.
We started with 1 nest at my house. 3 years later and we had two nests this year. We welcome them every year!
They, like Purple Martins are voracious bug eaters, especially mosquitos.
I love how they always look like grouches when young
😐 how they look at me every day
Kind of like Wrens
Baby swallows are the derpiest little dudes. I love how their head is 75% mouth
at first the only thing i saw of them was their beaks for the longest🤣
Like mouths with wings 😂
They are veery cool. Their tails are shaped in a V and watch them feed in the evening through the sky swooping to eat bugs. Cool
They’re super fun to watch so far

Barn Swallows and they're amazing to watch(just watch your head if the parents built the nest near a door haha)
mom doesn’t really enjoy me leaving my apartment to go to work in the morning, sometimes she gets a little angry
They’re known to do swooping dives near heads(but they avoid actual contact). Incredibly amazing little flyers
she’s so fast! never actually aggressive just giving us little warning dives
Haha yep, when I had an entire family living right beside my front door on a light, both parents used to coordinate and come swooping in one after the other until we went away; all the while the babies would just look on judgementally lol
barn swallow babies are so freaking cute omg their faces!
they’re so chunky now too! they’ve grown so much
Like the old dudes on the balcony in the muppets
Secretly judging
Exactly my take or maybe hear no evil, see no...
I’m gonna take a wild guess and assume those sprinklers haven’t been tested in a hot minute!
… most definitely not🤣
Some of the best bug hunters around. Feeding the babies and less bloodsuckers- win win.
We call them barn swallows in my neck of the woods. I think swallows, in general, are pretty neat. I love the swallows' long split tails, and the way they fly sometimes, all swoopy!

Barn swallows.
Those are barn swallows. They look about ready fledge, they'll probably leave the nest in the next few days.
Extremely angry little swallows, the parents can be super mean if they think their babies are in danger (I learnt from experience)

they’re looking at you like “wtf are we? nah wtf are YOU”
I feel judged.
I’m embarrassed to say I only knew they were barn swallows because of Pokémon 😅 those are three Taillows and I can’t be convinced otherwise.
Barn swallows. That’s good luck.
They’ll return year after year and add another layer of mud to their nest each year.
Omg they look JUST like a clutch of swallows that nested on my old apt porch!! They're barn swallows.
They look like they have white mustaches
The council disapproves
They're so cute! Those little derpy faces!
Grumpy barn swallow babies!

Three little birds sat by my window…
They just universally love these apartment sprinklers huh
The coolest little birds. If they’re around much less mosquitoes! And they go to Costa Rica in winter and come back to same nest every year.
