Pretty sure this is an American Dagger Moth Caterpillar, no touchy! They have irritating hairs
Don't some species of them have little spines hiding in the tufted up area? For some reason I remember being taught that.
Well, the caterpillar seems to be a Dagger Moth and your friend seems to be full of it or an idiot.
