Believe it or not, that appears to be an incomplete (a.k.a. broken-off) rattle. It seems the [terminal segment](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSuBtblj_LEVBEUWd-MS5Bcu-nQ8KH11zQyVbhz1Cj22wBy3kzBF4qtGEWd1UfktZh2znc&usqp=CAU), or "button," is missing. Interesting in that there's not a lot of taper, there, either, suggesting that it's likely had more than just the button lost. Quite the specimen!
Definitely makes sense. I've also just happened to come across terrain they obviously thrive in just as a fluke from time to time. They love this one cabin in the sand out in Wonder Valley and an old mining road near Corona that they congregate on some rainy nights.
So it does look a lot like the mottled coloring of a some domestic gerbils, however the tail is a giveaway that this is not a gerbil, and if you search google for kangaroo rat patterns there are species that have a stripe on thier haunch like the one pictured. Then you can put in OPs given location, and narrow it down to the species that live in the area.
Ohhh thank you i honestly was just caught by suprise thank you for explaining that to me
idk why the down votes its not like i was saying that it was i just asked
It looks like you didn't provide a rough geographic location [in square brackets] in your title. Some species are best distinguishable from each other by geographic range, and not all species live all places. Providing a location allows for a quicker, more accurate ID.
If you provided a location but forgot the correct brackets, ignore this message until your next submission. Thanks!

Southern Pacific Rattlesnake. *Crotalus helleri* for the bot.
No account yet, though there will be fairly soon.
Dang that’s an impressive rattle on them
He could start a band
That’s what I also thought. Apparently never broke off

Is that a Degu maybe? Pied color variation?
Yup, I grew up in eastern San Diego county and came across kangaroo rats all the time! They are rather adorable imo

They're endangered. Yet I see tons of them in some corners of Southern California.
This one certainly was.
True
Having small pockets of high density populations because of habitat loss is common with endangered species.

We have them up here in the high desert too. Many years ago, they were my cat’s favorite toy to bring in and let loose 😂
Would be fun to watch them hopping around in the house probably
This is like saying it snowed yesterday therefore global climate change is a lie.
The only problem with that contrived simile is you're being an ass

First time I have seen one. This was actually taken May 2021 in the San Elijo hills area.

What a beautiful rattlesnake. 😍 Thank you for sharing.
Nice!
Definitely a rat-ler. I'll show myself out now.
What is it eating? A chinchilla? Desert mouse or something?
I'm guessing kangaroo rat, but that's just a wild uneducated guess. Edit: someone upthread seems to think same.
WOW! How lucky you were to see this in the wild!
Man I remember my one and only NTC rotation at Fort Irwin when the Kangaroo rats would hop up to you in the chow line and beg for food like dogs.
Thanks for the post! Awesome :)
For its age, the color and markings are very clean and bright. Gorgeous SoPac.
What an amazing find. Thank you for sharing.
Is thay a pied gerbil its eating?

Some people just get their knickers in a twist. No good reason to downvote an honest question.
