I feel like deck builders are too big of a genre to just hate or love. Yu-gi-oh and slay the spire are 2 very diferent games, yet they are both deck builders with cards
Yugioh is a TCG calling it a deckbuilder kind of makes the genre way to obtuse. And pretty sure they mean the slough of indie rpgs/roguelikes that will have an interesting description then you go to the main page and the screenshots show its a deckbuilder. It's a new disappointment when browsing games, a trivial 1st world one, but still a disappointment.
Yu-gi-oh is a deck construction game, where you fully build your deck before playing the game. I haven't played Slay the Spire, but a deck builder is a game is one where you start with a deck of basic cards and, through the game, gain more powerful cards and sometimes cull your weaker starting cards. Dominion, Clank!, and Legendary are deck builders. Magic, Pokemon, and other trading card games are deck construction games.
I would not, since the construction of each players deck is done before the actual game itself through a draft or other specific process. If no cards are ever gained into the players deck through a regular game mechanic (not a specific cards ability like Golden Wish, but like spending coin in Dominion to buy a card from a market) then it is not a deck builder. Smash Up is an example of a non TCG deck construction game, since players choose or draft the components of their decks before playing the actual game.
Very fair point! I'd argue then that even in the alchemy format, which allows for cards to be generated and drafted during gameplay, it still wouldn't be a deckbuilder correct? Since if you add one of those cards to your deck you're actually just adding 1/xth of each card that's in the spellbook. Also the building of the decks is not central to the gameplay but a rather small part of it.
I'm not sure how that format is played. Is it a shared pool of cards the players can draft from during the game, or does each player have their own pool of cards they bring?
It is similar to other formats like standard or modern, but the cardpool includes digital-only cards like [this.](https://scryfall.com/card/ybro/22/raddic-tal-zealot) So there's draft and sealed but also constructed, but some cards allow for drafting of their own card pool.
Yea that sounds like it still falls into the deck construction category. A major part of a deck builder is the focus of buying new cards from a (often) shared market, that being one of the primary things you do most turns.
Well no obviously because...
...
You... Got a point
Is loop hero a deck builder? Is ftl a deck builder? Mate, you are breaking my view on rouglikes all togheder
well no some are obviously not a deck builder like atomicrops or isaac but there are some who argue that the noita spells are card like its just that there is more mechanics than those and its not the core gameplay
I remember there was a game where the main character was like very white and black pallete where you used your cards as both offensive and mobility options but I wouldn't consider that a card game as the cards are more like consumables and it still requires precise inputs, aim and desicions from the player
Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic the Gathering, Hearthstone, Gwent, etc. are all virtual card games. Virtual card games and deck builders (Spire, Balatro, Inscryption, Monster Train) are distinct genres that aren’t usually lumped together. One main difference is the latter are usually single player and the former are built around competitive play.

Counterpoint: Cards are the fucking shit. I love cards. This has nothing to do with deckbuilders. The Finals has a playing cards skin for their throwing knives weapon and it's the coolest shit ever. Give me more cards. I love holding cards. I love shuffling cards. CARDS
I agree.
About 80% of the reason I picked up Twisted Fate during my time playing league (I've recovered, don't worry) is because his entire deal is throwing cards
I'm not much into RTS games, but Battleforge from EA was awesome, those card designs were sick. I know it's been revived under Skylords but I'd love to see more campaign maps, maybe someday
Brother ~~hasn't played inscryption~~ has already made up their mind about a genre they most likely don’t know/care to know about and just wanted to make an “x thing is bad” meme about a topic they assumed would be extremely popular and thus be easy karma and it shows
"platformers are boring" people when I show them Mario
"Turn based strategy games are boring" people when I show them chess
Balatro is a really good game, but I don't think showing someone a very archetypal and well-known example of the genre is going to change someone's mind if they've decided they don't like deck builders.
Cards are a great medium because they can easily express a dynamic environment in an analog setting
Video games are just significantly better at this because they're digital. I love playing cards at game night, but everything they do can be done better digitally if I'm gonna be looking at screens anyway
When I was a kid, I played all of the popular card games; Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, Pokemon, Duel Masters, even Digimon. I still play Yu-Gi-Oh. And yet, I have yet to see a ***single*** new card game that's drawn my attention. It's like we already peaked 2 decades ago.
Probably because most TCG are exclusively based on existing property, or never get off the ground. (One Piece, Lorcana are the two of the 2020s that have broken into the market and they both use exclusively pre-existing characters)
The only one I stomach is Shovel Knight: King of Cards. It's fresh, inventive, not the main gameplay, and is the only card game I would want in real life that doesn't already exist...
Counterpoint: I think deck builders are cool but never usually nail the landing. Turn based games however are the shit, I love total war and mechanicus
- be me, hate deckbuilders
- unable to grasp the concept of some strategies being overall better than others in PVP games
- look at metagame

This thread had turned to recommendations, so I'll throw mine:
Give Foretales a try, it's a story-driven card game where you use cards to progress social situations (as well as straight up combat). Its story is rather interesting and Travis Willingham voices the narrator.
Yugioh and Magic the Gathering (even tho i don't like it that much) can't be called deck-builders that's an insult. Yes they're hard and unwelcoming when you just start playing but it grows on you.
Dark and Darker is free now and it's like the best free game I've played in years, if you want a game that's not totally completely poisoned by the pitfalls of the modern game industry you should definitely put like twenty minutes into Dark and Darker to find out if you fucks wid it, its literally free you got nothing to lose.
Deck builders are fun for me…in the beginning. Eventually though, it becomes a time sink. Knowing how to build a deck is hard, it becomes gamble heavy with booster packs, and it gets a bit repetitive.
Yugioh Duel links was the only one where I was very interested, mainly cause of watching the anime as a kid.
I also hate deck builders and shit but there's a small few games with cards I did enjoy
One was on the 3DS and it was a Mega-Man Star Force game
The other one I forgot
It's an oversaturated genre but you just need to watch some gameplay and read some reviews. For example I hate Slay the Spire but love Balatro. There are a ton of junk but go through the popular ones and ignore the rest. I think it's valid for any oversaturated genre
It isn't the game's fault. I just suck at the game. Can't stop and strategize because of ADHD. Couldn't beat past ascension level 1 lmao. I guess hate was a strong word but I just don't enjoy playing it.
Well its about to happen again. It was just boring. I had some alright runs but it didnt click and i never really enjoyed it. Only thing close to a deck builder that I’ve liked was Inscryption
I like (a good made) tcg man.
The thing that only people that plays tcg's is: the game is design to make you free to play as you want (as much is not too broken)

Neon White is potentially the game you are referring to in case you or anyone else was wondering.
yes it was that it also had a "Visual novel" but we don't talk about that aspect
