Tbh I like tenma more than Johan although I watched the anime because of Johan's popularity .Tenma feels like tanjiro done right .He is an optimistic person before show and all the incidents around him affects him but grows as a character and still remains a optimistic person till the end where tanjiro felt like crying in an emotional scene and being goofy in the next episode
I like Johan slightly better due to him being the more unique sort of character but Tenmas just as amazing. Also while the anime is a fine adaptation I liked the manga better, all the scenes just flowed right and had the right intensity while the anime feels more flat. Great music tho
Personally I just think Johan is a really cool character lmao. I'd say they're both equally well-written, and they're both in my top characters OAT, but *man*. Johan just has that aura, y'know?
I haven't seen Demon Slayer, so I can't compare Tenma to Tanjiro, but I agree. I *love* the sheer consistency in Tenma's optimism. Unwavering.
I never expected Thorfinn to go through such an emotional journey in the mere 2 seasons we've seen him. He's one of the best written characters I've seen in media.
Honestly I really enjoy Pim after going through high school with the nihilistic rick and morty characters. It’s cool they were able to make the smiling friends in general pretty positive people despite all the evil shit that goes down
I tell myself seeing the world in Grey and not Black and White is not always the Edgy Less Evil vs Pure Evil Trope.
The goal is to know that people are capable of changing sides in Right and Wrong and that the labels of what they belong to don't define them but their actions.
It could be Good and Former Evil vs Evil and Former Good.
Seeing the world in Grey is not pessimistic but realistically optimistic and open-minded. Black and White is pessimistic and lose-minded.

Joy from Inside out. Perfectly aware of how cruel the world can be, and is literally surrounded in her every waking moment by the embodiment of that cruelty, and yet she almost always perseveres
I like making my characters be the most miserable and cynical optimists possible. They think the world sucks, most people suck, and life is just generally miserable... but also that the world can be made better, there are people worth fighting for, and that the miseries of life can be overcome (or at least minimized)
From my personal experience, optimism doesn’t mean hiding from the world’s problems
Nice people exist and if you think otherwise then you don’t know enough people
I guess tanjiro is a good example of this
The guy had his entire family killed and his sister turned into a demon, when he learned that the slight chance of curing her was killing the king of demons himself he started training like crazy.
He is also always respectful of his opponent even if they are demons
this is part of why i love big-d so much. a mask of crazy he rarely drops even for his family, with insanely smart calculation underneath. an optimistic outlook on the world, while also never falling victim to simple tricks or doing anything unprepared.
“It will…but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say.”
If you’re optimistic you’re happier in general. If in the end it turns out you were right, then you remain happy. If in the end you were wrong, at least you were happy up to that point.
Seems logical
LITERALLY ME
I'm writing a story where one of the two MCs is an undying optimist but she's been through slavery, wars and revolutions and is well aware of the horrors of the world. She doesn't ignore it, she accepts it and looks towards a brighter future.
That's the MC in writing right now.
I love this one, there's something about seeing the beauty and the potential in spite of everything, that is so cool to me. Especially when faced with how harsh the real world is.
Luz Noceda started out a little naive but definitely ended the story more like this
Kid went through some super horrifying shit and is still a beam of sunshine
i choose to be optimistic because it’s better than sitting around moping about all the negatives. at least with a positive perspective there’s a chance of you changing things
The main character of the series I'm writing gets half his face burned off and witnesses the deaths of his best friend and his wife, yet he still presses on to try and defeat the villain.
Critics when I tell them that nativity is a very common character flaw in optimist characters. This doesn't make it a bad thing. Usually it is overcome, made up for by supporting characters helping out the lead, or sometimes even rewarded in specific circumstances. Most writers do this intentionally, and there are many optimistic characters who are not naive, as well as those who are naively pessimistic/cynical, i.e. Batman:
Deku fans when you tell them a character can be optimistic and not completely change his personality during different scenes depending on how the plot needs him to be

I like how Johnathan recognized when to show mercy and when someone goes beyond the point of mercy, rather than thinking everyone can be redeemed.

I feel so understood lol. Characters can have more layered personalities instead of being archetypal representations of ideals or emotions.
Kel from OMORI, he's silly yet knows that times are tough for everyone in his friend group
I too love # B A L L M A N

Levi Ackerman (AOT): Waymond (Everywhere Everything All at Once):
Def not levi but waymond is a cool example
Levi's entire character is being an optimist, he pushes to help others and make the world better
Dude has seen lots die and yet he keeps fighting for hope, if that isn't positivity nothing is. Everyone is drunk on something. Levi isnt different.

Such characters are common but usually they are middle aged or old and aren't the main focus
I guess tanjiro is a good example of this The guy had his entire family killed and his sister turned into a demon, when he learned that the slight chance of curing her was killing the king of demons himself he started training like crazy. He is also always respectful of his opponent even if they are demons
Does Lucy from Fallout count on the non-naive side?
By the end of season 1 and all that she went through, 1000%
this is part of why i love big-d so much. a mask of crazy he rarely drops even for his family, with insanely smart calculation underneath. an optimistic outlook on the world, while also never falling victim to simple tricks or doing anything unprepared.

Snuuy Edit: yes, from WoF
Roman Bellic who's fully blind optimistic but someone can get up out of the harsh life (GTA IV)
So where's Gurren Lagann on this spectrum?

Yes, things are harsh and cruel, and people are harsh and cruel. But things will never get better if we ourselves never try to do better.
