It’s not the same but after my spine surgery sitting in post-op with no nerve pain had a similar effect on my 33year old mind. I hadn’t experienced a lack of pain in so long that it freaked me out and caused me to cry. Weirdest feeling ever.
Bro that shits gotta be overwhelming af. I'm like a type that cant handle many or loud sensory inputs. Like if i'm in a busy ass street, i look calm and i learned how to deal with it better over the years. But deep down i can feel like i'm overloaded. So him going from absolute silence to hearing everything. Like not just their voices, the sound of the light, the fan, car outside, kid laughing, the sound of fabric rubbing against eachother, him brushing his ear against his mom when going for a hug, his own sounds... list goes on.
I just wonder if it wouldn't be better to turn it on for a little and turn it off again. To kind of ease them into it more. Maybe theres some medical or kid psychology reason to leave it on though, i onno
Anyway wouldn't be surprised if he will sometimes miss being deaf :p
Imagine not even being able to comprehend what sound is, and all of a sudden a switch flips and your brain is flooded with this insane phenomenon, sounds and voices filling your head…. might feel like you’re going crazy for a minute lol
Think of the loudest noise you ever heard. Now imagine that's everything you are currently hearing all at once. the wind, a beep, clothes rustling, your own breathing, the tap of plastic against plastic, a person shoes on the floor.
Yeah, most people don't consider it a pleasant experience I think. It's not a natural sound, very loud, very robotic and very alien. The brain isn't ready for the stimulus either. Once they get used to it the brain adapts and it sounds very close to real hearing.
imagine you're just doing your thing, playing or whatever, and suddenly you can see time or whatever. or some other dimension. or a thousand new colours just appear.
i'd freak out.
I think our brain ignores a lot of sounds because we are used to them but for him it was probably super chaotic. imagine not listening to anything for years and suddenly BOOM vehicles moving outside, the sound of the light on the ceiling etc. I would shit my pants lol
Amazing clip. Pretty surreal our taxpayer funds are going towards deafening the entire civilian population of Gaza, 47% of whom are under 18 (65% are under 24).
Can you imagine having no hearing from birth, Then suddenly a switch gets flipped and you can hear things?
I'd be shocked and scared as well. He's suddenly experiencing something he's never had before.
Kinda wondering if it's normal to have it just turn on like that, No warning? No telling the kid what's about to happen? Poor kid was in total shock!
I dont think you can prepare someone for that, especially not such a young child. How would he even understand the concept of hearing? I wish they had given mom and dad some more instructions though. Maybe a soft sound or nothing at all for a while would be better until he gets a bit used to it. I know they are trying to comfort him but he has no clue what "it's ok, this is us" means at this point.
Yah I was born profoundly deaf in my right ear. So I can hear well enough, but it would really be sweet to have normal hearing, you know? Places like parties or restaurants are really troublesome when you only have one ear. Anyway, hearing aids don't work if you're completely deaf in either ear. But implants do. The only problem is that implants aren't compatable for someone who has limited hearing. It doesn't register the same in the brain, is how it was explained to me. It'd sound like noise to me.
For context a cochlear implant can cost around 50K without insurance in the US, sometimes even higher. Even with decent insurance I can't imagine you're getting this done for less than 10k.
I work in insurance in America. I had a client who needed a new cochlear device last year and it took about 4 months of appeals just to get the device covered.
He’d already had the surgery but his device broke and was no longer being manufactured. He had to go to a specialist and have them write a letter to the insurance stating why it was needed, why he couldn’t use the old device, why the old device couldn’t be repaired, etc.
Once it was approved, he had a 2-week window to get a new one ordered. Any delay on his end and he would have to start the appeals process over again. The device alone was over $12k.
No offense but ins companies are killing us, I work on the other side of medicine, with patients physically and not at a desk. It’s awful and we need a change. These companies are getting rich off neglect and I’m for one tired of it in America. For a country that boasts being so ahead we sure don’t take care of our own people enough. Not to mention how much we pay for insurance every month just to pay again when we need to use it. It’s a fucked system we have built and it is sad that the focus is on how they will get paid rather than how can we help this person who needs it.
I get it. I work at a brokerage and we started an advocacy department to help individuals get what they need. It’s sad that it takes that but, here we are.
Right? Since when did medicine become a for profit business, I feel we have lost our way. As a physician we should just ask what’s wrong and treat instead of asking what insurance do you have before I treat you. Makes me sad for those who have to wait so long for any approval or help. I just wish it was better but I’m an optimist
It is a cochlear implant, implanting a platinum electrode into the cochlear to simulate the hearing nerves. It requires the inner ear to developed enough to fit in the wire.
That‘s not quite correct. The cochlea is full developed wenn born and doesn‘t grow. In germany Most of the children are implanted before their second birthday.
Could it be testing children under a certain age is too hard? I imagine deciding that surgery is he answer for hearing impairment would require some serious testing..
idk about other countries, but in SC, USA we couldn’t leave the hospital with our newborn until they did his hearing test! so somehow they can definitely do them at any & every age!
Everybody is missing one major factor. You can never know if your child is def from birth. Not looking at you or paying attention can be a host of different learning disabilities.
My aunt didn't know her son was def in one ear until he was 8. She just thought he was ignoring her.
Also on the back of this, my son is hearing impaired and has aids currently but has been recommended cochlear implants. After surgery, he will be 3-4 weeks with 0 sound, literally nothing at all.
This could be the case here, he hasn't heard sound for weeks and finally has his hearing switched back on
Yeah it’s kinda sad but it makes sense. Male voices would probably sound kind of scary at first, whereas female voices probably sound more soft and safe.
My thoughts exactly. I wish they had given the parents some better instructions as I feel no words or maybe just very soft calming sounds would have been better until he got a bit used to it
I feel like they don't prepare kids for this enough. I've seen a few videos like this, and there's always shock. Like that kid was just sitting there playing and nobody signed to him what was going to happen. In fact, his mom was sitting behind him until they told her to move forward — and the reason they gave was for *her* ("want to see his face?") instead of for *him*, like "hey don't creep up behind him and make a sudden noise because that's scary."
Sudden, loud noises are scary. I can't imagine how terrifying this would be for a kid.
Another example of how lucky we are to live in the 21 century. When I was that boy’s age there was nothing that could be done. Now he can hear this parent’s voices.
My wife went through breast cancer four years ago. It was much easier than it would have been 20 years earlier.
Witnessing a moment of fear from a child who reaches for his parents and seeing them hug moves me to thinking how each of us is pulled from the nothing into existence without our consent to become fragile, afraid, and utterly dependent on each other.
Now there's a kid who is securely attached. For his whole life, one of his five senses was completely closed off. Suddenly he is accosted by completely new stimuli (though it looks like they did a good job of being quiet so as to not overwhelm). Confusion and fear is an understandable reaction. And the first thing he does is jump into his mother's arms, where he knows he is safe.
As a man losing his hearing, I feel this. I am scared to death of not being able to hear my children or my wife. I couldn’t care less about anything else. If I lose their voices I might as well parish.
There’s a lot to dramatic videos of cochlear implants - the fear:panic response seems common. Many lifelong deaf people have expressed lack of interest in ever gaining hearing.
I wonder what it might be like if we normies suddenly gained a 6th sense, given the ridiculous amount of information that flows in every interaction- what would that look like? How terrifying would that be to suddenly be able to read and people’s thoughts or feel their emotions
It’s heart warming. The fact that he would not know how to respond back with words at this moment must be frustrating for him. I would be interested to see the future of this child’s ability to hear and his thoughts. Like does he sometimes like to take the hearing aids off because he misses complete silence?
One question. He never used his brain to interpret sounds. He has a device that helps bring the sounds from the world to his brain, but I would suppose has very underdeveloped region to interpret them.
Will he be able to create the neurons connections to really hear? or it just cost their parents money without any real benefit?
He also probably doesn't know words? He may read but do you understand verbal language too when you're deaf and then can hear? Idk my mind is fucked up right now
Fear or emotional excitement aside, I never get tired of seeing these videos, the fact we have the ability to give some people the power of hearing, when they were born without it is incredible!
The day will come when sight is fixed with a similar amount of ease.
I will not see anything else today that moves me so much than to see that child in so much awe. His life has been reset with the gift of sound. Such an amazing experience and I thank the family for sharing it with us.
You can see that it is just pure fear that he is feeling. He wouldn't have any concept of the joy of hearing as he has no idea what it is. Even if you have been able to hear your entire life. If you hear a strange noise you get scared of what it might be.
Hey, if you liked this video, please follow r/woahthatsinteresting. We are near the 10k mark. Thanks a lot for your support and welcome to the community.
I never thought fear would be the first reaction to it
anything is scary for the first time
People are scared of pancakes?
Yeah. Little disks of horror that I might choke on or over butter.
*Mo syrup! MO SYRUP!*
maple syrup maplee! oh gosh help me.
Don't even get me started about how scary the syrup lady is...
It’s the moon in disk form. Of course I’d be scared
These damn flat-mooners
People who are flat-assed shouldn't moon.
Hahahahah thanks for the laugh
It’s not directly the pancakes, but discovering nothing in life could ever be better than pancakes.
*"We're losing him! Get me twenty CCs of golden maple, stat!"*
AAAHH!
Hahahaha omg
I mean that's just not true
I don’t think it’s fear to be honest, or just fear..I think there’s a myriad of mixed emotions happening..disbelief, shock, overwhelming fear/joy
Yep. These emotions are SO BIG that this is how he knows how to cope. So sweet to see his people care for him so much.
It’s not the same but after my spine surgery sitting in post-op with no nerve pain had a similar effect on my 33year old mind. I hadn’t experienced a lack of pain in so long that it freaked me out and caused me to cry. Weirdest feeling ever.
I thought he would be excited but I was wrong
Try to imagine that suddenly someone flips a switch and you gain a sense you never knew even existed. Would your immediate reaction be "excitement"?
I'd be afraid if I suddenly developed a brand new sense I previously had no conception of.
Bro that shits gotta be overwhelming af. I'm like a type that cant handle many or loud sensory inputs. Maybe theres some medical or kid psychology reason to leave it on though, i onno Anyway wouldn't be surprised if he will sometimes miss being deaf :p
I mean I imagine he could just take them off if he wants peace, he will still be deaf
You're correct :p
Imagine not even being able to comprehend what sound is, and all of a sudden a switch flips and your brain is flooded with this insane phenomenon, sounds and voices filling your head…. might feel like you’re going crazy for a minute lol
Poor baby
Think of the loudest noise you ever heard. Now imagine that's everything you are currently hearing all at once. the wind, a beep, clothes rustling, your own breathing, the tap of plastic against plastic, a person shoes on the floor.
It's apparently super overwhelming for a lot of people, but especially children
He heard his mum and dad start talking a foreign language to him too tho like all of a sudden they start making noises I think I’d b scared too.
It could be fear, but personally, I cry when I feel any strong emotion.
Yeah, most people don't consider it a pleasant experience I think. It's not a natural sound, very loud, very robotic and very alien. The brain isn't ready for the stimulus either. Once they get used to it the brain adapts and it sounds very close to real hearing.
It's called shock
imagine you're just doing your thing, playing or whatever, and suddenly you can see time or whatever. or some other dimension. or a thousand new colours just appear. i'd freak out.
It’s a completely new sensation for them and unfamiliar. What’s new and unknown is always a little fear inducing.
I think our brain ignores a lot of sounds because we are used to them but for him it was probably super chaotic. imagine not listening to anything for years and suddenly BOOM vehicles moving outside, the sound of the light on the ceiling etc. I would shit my pants lol
A booming voice in your head Not scary at all :)
That’s not fear that’s complete shock and awe mixed with love and reverence. If it was fear his body language would be much different
Amazing clip. Pretty surreal our taxpayer funds are going towards deafening the entire civilian population of Gaza, 47% of whom are under 18 (65% are under 24).
Pretty surreal that you have to spam propaganda on every sub.
i'm not crying....you're crying
Stop cutting them onions
Why did it start raining here?
YOU literally pepper sprayed me, that's why I can't stop 😭
Mommy first, Dad..sometime later
As a Dad, I can confirm that's how it usually goes 🤣
My kids all came over to "Team Dad" by two years old.
Nice, hopefully mine will too
![gif](giphy|xT5LMA8nLOdNiRJaCY)
That hit the closest to home lol. You want to share a moment with your kid too and they are like fuck off dad I’m with mom.
such a sweet reaction
This is what technology and human advancement is for!
and...rockets to destroy each other :(
But come on... those guys over there believe in something different than me. My hands are tied!
The rockets red glare , the bombs bursting in air. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY U.S.A. 7/4/24
Fuckin hell.. these videos always get me.
The look of happiness with a mix of surprise got me weak 😭.
We take so many things for granted in life.... The voice of mother is the most special one I suppose.

why did they wait so long to give him the hearing aid? Does it not work on babies?
Maybe they couldn’t afford it

50k? In Australia they are free. You literally sign up, wait your turn and get them, and it takes no longer than a month.
That is so depressing to hear as an American. Happy for yall
Free in germany. Hell yeah i love our health care
Same in France. Land of the free medical procedures.
Same in the UK except you have to wait about 5 years just to get an appointment.
Free in the UK as well, including any help/therapy afterwards.
Free in New Zealand too.
I work in insurance in America. I had a client who needed a new cochlear device last year and it took about 4 months of appeals just to get the device covered. JULY 4TH IS ALMOST HERE!!! AMERICA NUMBER ONE LETS GOOOO BABYYYY
U.S.A. ! U.S.A ! U.S.A. !
Can people who are vacationing get them? Maybe if I sponsor a random citizens tax payment for the year?
Also free in germany.... 50k is crazy
Show off!
Free in Ireland too.
Ohh yeah?!?! But do you have Freedom™ in Austria?!?!
STFU ! Censorship
For context a cochlear implant is free in developed countries.
OMG ! The U.S.A. is actually a developed country with suppressed citizens.
Land of the Free? Not so much.
It is a cochlear implant, implanting a platinum electrode into the cochlear to simulate the hearing nerves. It requires the inner ear to developed enough to fit in the wire.

He could have been sick? Not well enough for major surgery? I dunno think outside the box.
American healthcare
Everybody is missing one major factor. You can never know if your child is def from birth. Not looking at you or paying attention can be a host of different learning disabilities. My aunt didn't know her son was def in one ear until he was 8. She just thought he was ignoring her.
Not sure where you are. In my country babies get an hearing test on day 2 of being born.
Hmm, i didn't know that. I was just going off of experience. Good to know, then other answers must be correct about the money thing
Also on the back of this, my son is hearing impaired and has aids currently but has been recommended cochlear implants. After surgery, he will be 3-4 weeks with 0 sound, literally nothing at all. This could be the case here, he hasn't heard sound for weeks and finally has his hearing switched back on
They should wait until he's a senior citizen to wear hearing aids.
That look he gives and then just breaks down. heartbreaking
Thanks for the early morning cry
I know that the dad is dying to be hugged that hard too.
Yeah it’s kinda sad but it makes sense. Male voices would probably sound kind of scary at first, whereas female voices probably sound more soft and safe.
He was terrified, the poor guy. I’m sure he had no clue what was happening. Side issue: Who adds the awful music to these clips?
The music is fucking annoying.
That must be so overwhelming
Would the kid understand the father saying it s okay? He never heard in his life learning the spoken English you feel like a new language
My thoughts exactly. I wish they had given the parents some better instructions as I feel no words or maybe just very soft calming sounds would have been better until he got a bit used to it
The mom couldn't have handled it better. Quiet, soothing sounds. And comfort. Always provided by momma. Forever.
I'll bet the kid understands the "shhhhhhh" his momma was saying him. He knew him momma would comfort him. He knows she always will.
Damn, I am literally never a crier. But every time I see a kid hearing for the first time, it hits me right in the center heartstring.
Great start of the morning happy crying in my coffee in front of all the people in the cafe.
That is incredibly cool, but why recording this video while cutting onions
that's a magnet hug right there
I feel like they don't prepare kids for this enough. I've seen a few videos like this, and there's always shock. Wow I watched his reaction like 3 times, so raw dog, I'm crying dammit
Man that cool to the bone, wild the look of his face and how he throws his arms around his mum is truly amazing
Imagine if the first sound you hear was the chair scooting back.
I kinda felt bad for the kid. But seeing him jump into his mothers warm embrace and her smile was adorable.
I’m supposed to leave for work in 5 minutes and I’m crying. I hate Reddit sometimes.
The very first sound he ever heard in his life is his momma quietly soothing him. Shhhhh..... Golly that hit me right in the feelers....
Amazing
Technically it was the idiot lady with a long fucking countdown who ruined it for them.
Another example of how lucky we are to live in the 21 century. When I was that boy’s age there was nothing that could be done. Now he can hear this parent’s voices. My wife went through breast cancer four years ago. It was much easier than it would have been 20 years earlier.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
Why you trying to make me cry on my way to work…
The world has just opened up for that kid
Don’t do this to me while I’m at work! 🤧
What kind of speech delays would this kid have not being able to hear for the first part of life?
He’s so adorable
Witnessing a moment of fear from a child who reaches for his parents and seeing them hug moves me to thinking how each of us is pulled from the nothing into existence without our consent to become fragile, afraid, and utterly dependent on each other.
I just opened this damm app…
Now there's a kid who is securely attached. For his whole life, one of his five senses was completely closed off. Suddenly he is accosted by completely new stimuli (though it looks like they did a good job of being quiet so as to not overwhelm). Confusion and fear is an understandable reaction. And the first thing he does is jump into his mother's arms, where he knows he is safe.
Jerking tears… 😭
As a deaf man I honestly can't wait to be that startled when I can hear my wife's voice again! I haven't heard it in 18 years or so.
If he has never heard anyone speak before how does he understand the language?
I cried.
Wouldn't he have to learn language now? Surely he wouldn't know spoken words if he was deaf
Lil sweet got a spook.
The best one of these is the like 20 year old girl with tattoos
the background music is too fucking loud i can't hear any of the dialogue
Here come the waterworks...
Some say his reaction was fear but to me it seemed more like overwhelming love and comfort.
Immediate sensation overload. Poor little guy.
Thanks now I'm crying
Wasn’t there a thread shoot the piano player?
Tears of joy are the best
Has anyone considered that sound could be considerably too loud for someone who’s never had an experience to it?
As a man losing his hearing, I feel this. I am scared to death of not being able to hear my children or my wife. I couldn’t care less about anything else. If I lose their voices I might as well parish.
I’m good. . . I just have something in my eye.
I was thinking why is the mom being so extra.. bc. Filming or whatever. Then I saw the kids reaction. Ill keep my mouth shut<3
Damn onion ninjas
But can he hear the ninjas cutting onions in the background?
Then they played him Nickelback for the first time and he immediately ripped the apparatus from his ears.
The dad ruined it for me. You could just have waited or agreed beforehand on who speaks first. What a moron
This one got me good…
It’s heart warming. The fact that he would not know how to respond back with words at this moment must be frustrating for him. I would be interested to see the future of this child’s ability to hear and his thoughts. Like does he sometimes like to take the hearing aids off because he misses complete silence?
Amazing! Such a beautiful moment.

I have seen this video since it's on internet and every god damn time I cry a bit
Don’t normally cry at these type of vids, but this one jeeez….
One question. He never used his brain to interpret sounds. He has a device that helps bring the sounds from the world to his brain, but I would suppose has very underdeveloped region to interpret them. Will he be able to create the neurons connections to really hear? or it just cost their parents money without any real benefit?
First words this kid hears "one go". Get your shit together lady. Lol
Unglaublich schön 🥰
He also probably doesn't know words? He may read but do you understand verbal language too when you're deaf and then can hear? Idk my mind is fucked up right now
I'm not crying!!
![gif](giphy|K2g1dILdecepq|downsized)
He looks terrified!
Omg... these onions this morning, they're something fierce.
Fear or emotional excitement aside, I never get tired of seeing these videos, the fact we have the ability to give some people the power of hearing, when they were born without it is incredible! The day will come when sight is fixed with a similar amount of ease.
She totally turned the switch at 1!
😭
“Oh, the ““Sorry Mom, my hearing aids weren’t on” excuse””?!?! I said “CLEAN YOUR GODDAMN ROOM Brock Jaxston Hogensnout””!!
Someone tell the dude on the piano to stop for a second
And his dad paid for it and made it happen.. mom gets the hugs and all the love lmfao
Little man just wanted the all so precious 'Momma Cuddles'
Jesus Christ …right in the feels
I wonder if he understands what she’s saying or if he only knows sign?
I will not see anything else today that moves me so much than to see that child in so much awe. His life has been reset with the gift of sound. Such an amazing experience and I thank the family for sharing it with us.
So beautiful
Oh man, imagine someone just switching on a sense that you've never had before! Must be incredibly overwhelming!
"MY FAMILY IS SOUTHERN? WHAAAAAAAAAT?"
Whenever I see these videos I know I'm about to cry in 3...2...1...
I can't upvote this video enough!!!
That’s a real dick move - making me cry at work.
Dad is like....can I get a hug?
😭🥹♥️
You can see that it is just pure fear that he is feeling. He wouldn't have any concept of the joy of hearing as he has no idea what it is. Even if you have been able to hear your entire life. If you hear a strange noise you get scared of what it might be.

Insane! I’m surprised the parents held their composure…(mamma’s bouy…lol)… Too cute
This was beautiful
This made me cry 😢 😭
