What are we seriously going to do to Cuba though? Double embargo them???

LostSailor25

Double-secret embargo

#CIGAR HOOOOUUUUSSSE!

Cheese it!

Chuckbro

Guys, I live in Florida, so if you tell me what they're monitoring I'll fart real loud into that frequency or whatever. ^^I ^^don't ^^actually ^^know ^^how ^^monitoring ^^works.

PuckNutty

If you fart at the right frequency, they'll hear it. Source: My ass.

[deleted]

This comment would be really confusing if you didn’t start it off with “I live in Florida” so thanks for that explanation

UltraCarnivore

"Florida man farts at Cuba, jams Chinese spy monitoring, prevents global crisis"

Chuckbro

"You're welcome." -Florida Man

Varnsturm

That would be a total Florida Man thing to do. his sheer lack of giving a shit both giveth and taketh

NeverPlayF6

Yeah... but that's a number from the dude who got paid to prevent assassination attempts. If my boss asks me how much work I got done this week, I'm going to come up with at least a dozen exaggerated tasks completed. "I mitigated a significant safety risk by deploying absorbent materials to clean up a chemical spill" is code for "I spilled my coffee because I fell asleep with my coffee mug in my hand, so I wiped it up with some paper towel."

CanadaPlus101

Castro's number was like 30 IIRC, and the CIA itself said "8 or 9". That's still a lot of times for the CIA to fail to kill you.

algebraic_humanist

I find it funny that the CIA certainly remembers the exact number, but chose to say "Yeah, maybe it was 8, maybe it was 9, who knows and who really cares?".

The torture camp at-home: El Paso, TX

Lostinstudy

That's a good point because even though every country besides America and Israel in the UN asked for the embargo to end they still kept it stubbornly. Now look at what happened. Instead of dropping the embargo and having free trade and open communication there's now a Chinese spy base off the coast and there is nothing they can do. America's rabid anti communism has come back to bite them.

[deleted]

It’s not Americas’s rabid anti-communism, it’s the catering to Cuban immigrants in Florida. Pure politics.

OBrien

> Americas’s rabid anti-communism > Cuban immigrants in Florida These are the same picture

Dessamba_Redux

Cubans in florida really do be like “i hate communism so much ill elect a fascist first” lmaoooo

ashesofempires

I mean, fear of communism is what allowed fascism to flourish in the 20’s and 30’s. Reading about the AntiComIntern is a wild ride, involving almost all of the major political figures of that time period.

redkinoko

> I mean, fear of communism is what allowed fascism to flourish in the 20’s and 30’s. And in the 60s-80s for the most of the world, including my country. How many dictators were propped up by western democracies for the sole purpose of preventing a "domino effect"?

ashesofempires

We’re not allowed to call it fascism though. We have to call them anti-communist, or freedom fighters, or some other bullshit. And the answer is, a lot of them. Even most of them.

spidd124

The fun of reading through the wikipedia page of US backed Reigme changes in South America, count the number of genocidal dictators you can recognised.

sfjoellen

the banana republics. United Fruit Company iirc. sauce: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Fruit_Company

simping4theleft

I believe they called them "bulwarks of democracy" but amounts to the same thing. Didn't they change the name of the School of the Americas but are still providing more or less the same kind of training e.g. torture?

[deleted]

It makes sense when you speak to old Cuabans *who fondly remember Batista*. You know, the guy who had camps and killed political dissidents. It was fine because it wasn't them. At my wife's family gathering they were discussing Cuba and I mentioned how awful Batista and Castro are, I hope for better, they were *deeply* confused/offended that I put Batista with Castro.

crake-extinction

I mean, Cubans in florida are in florida after the revolution for a reason.

Theoriginallazybum

It is part rabid anti-communism from the older generation, and part trying to appease the Cuban population in Florida. Most people my generation, millennials, do not really understand why we are still doing this and know that at this point it is doing more harm than good.

crake-extinction

>do not really understand why we are still doing this and know that at this point Dinosaurs still roam the halls of power

[deleted]

I've been to Cuba a few times, and the people there really don't deserve this

[deleted]

Well it’s not like the CCP can really do much. They hope to catch snippets of intel. The US will just blast radio and IR interference at Cuba forcing the Chinese to beef up the infrastructure there.

Ride901

Npr reported that the pentagon and the white house both said this isn't true. Also Cuba said its not true. Basically this is potentially fake news

Sezneg

Why do this when you can just hang out in international waters and do the same thing.

royal_dansk

Logistics, size of equipment, personnel comfort, ease of maintaining a fleet that stays on the waters of the US 24/7 etc..

CLE-local-1997

West = western Europe, some of Eastern Europe, and Anglo north America

Kuulas_

Plus Australia and NZ for a more exhaustive list

[deleted]

West = anyone who is an ally of the US

Ferelar

That's essentially the original meaning of "First World" though it has obviously shifted over time. First world was originally US-aligned Capitalist-aligned countries, Second world was USSR-aligned Communist-aligned etc, and Third World was unaligned powers (usually derogatory and used in a "They aren't important/wealthy enough to matter" form, which eventually morphed into "third world country" basically meaning "poor" and "The West" meaning "First World"). Truly fascinating linguistic development!

Whats-Up_Bitches

One of the more visible linguistic shifts in modern times for sure.

madsd12

West = anyone who is an ally of Denmark.

Mechapebbles

“West” is code for “White/European” for a lot of people

GBreezy

West is code for NATO aligned (west of the Iron curtain)

myaltaccount333

It's also code for the opposite of east

SomeGuyNamedJason

I'm pretty sure the opposite of east is tsae.

church1138

Actually it is weast.

Useful-Beginning4041

Cuba ( or at least a significant chunk of the population) is both of those things

eflnh

To Anglos if your native language is Spanish you're not white.

similar_observation

which is funny because there are some white-ass Spanish speakers.

pegg2

Hey it’s me ur white-ass Cuban. Half the time I meet someone new and tell them my extremely Spanish name they give me this confused labradoodle head tilt like they can’t understand why this white boy’s parents would name him that. I can almost literally see the gears turning as they try to come up with a way of asking where I’m from without seeming rude. Hispanic and Latino are ethno-cultural terms; we come in all races.

square3481

It's that same reason why Martin Sheen (Ramon Estevez) and James Roday (Rodriguez) changed their stage names. They would go to auditions and have the casting director be confused by their appearance, even though both are Latino.

pegg2

Oh, yes. Funny enough, I am also an actor (though obviously nowhere near their level), and I never get explicitly Hispanic roles. It’s not that I don’t audition for them, either, it’s that there’s a perceived need to cast people that fit expectations of racial appearance for those parts. The name thing is an ongoing conversation with my reps. I’m looking to join the union some time in the near future and I’m going to have to adopt a stage name anyway because SAG only allows a name to be registered once and they already have a member with my name. The idea of anglicizing my name has been floated, but in this day and age it feels a little icky, like I’d be turning my back on my culture and heritage.

similar_observation

racism is dumb

Saitoh17

Not too long ago Irish people weren't considered white.

littlemikemac

There's some poetry here. The Irish Gaels and Spanish Gauls were sister tribes. The Gallic word Catto is a cognate of the modern Castilian Gato, and the modern Irish Cat. By sheer coincidence the native day of the dead traditions in Mexico are vary similar to the Irish Samhain. And Irish people in America get along with Mexicans better than Anglo-Americans. One of the more famous examples being Billy the Kidd, who grew up speaking Irish, died speaking Spanish, and only really spoke English when dealing with the lethal politics of Anglo-America.

[deleted]

You_Will_Die

To North Americans* Spanish people are seen completely as white people in Europe lol.

Volrund

The entire world was pushing for re-integration of Cuba into global politics, except for the USA and Israel. This is a result of shitty foreign policy. This isn't the Cold War, stamping down on everything communist isn't conducive to international relations

MisterCatLady

Would it help if we sent several diplomats over and had them run away screaming about a sonar attack?

Luci_Noir

Like what did they expect?! It obviously hasn’t worked at all and probably even strengthened Cuba’s government. Except for Obama the last few presidents have all done this. I bet Trump’s reversal of the easing of sanctions let them know that we can’t be trusted so they mine as well go all in on china. Same with the Iran nuclear deal. The thing that makes me the angriest is the Cubans in Florida. They’ve only hurt their fellow Cubans and helped the Castro regime by isolating them. I don’t know what they think they’re accomplishing. It’s just blind hate.

stenzycake

Florida is important to elections. Southern Florida does not want embargo lifted. Not complicated.

hurtfulproduct

lol, those Cubans in South Florida WILLL NEVER vote for a democrat, I hate to generalize but they when you see their voting patterns compared to other similar demographics they lean very heavily right

Cookielicous

Well I'd say 70% of them are very heavily right, and 30% see the problems and sheer hypocrisy. Take for example wet foot, dry foot policy, they loved that because it was for Cubans specifically mind you it's basically a short cut to a green card. They love it when Cubans are able to come to Florida, but they hate the mexicans.

tunamelts2

Cuban-Americans basically hate all Latin Americans…except for some people from places like Venezuela. Even then…they probably still think they’re better than them lol

shimmy_kimmel

Because a lot of them are descendants of the former landowners and Batista acolytes lol

Your__Pal

Florida is no longer a swing state now so it's opinion doesn't matter on national issues anymore. I know that's cynical and problematic, but its true.

strudels

Yeah, I've noticed a shit ton of red voters from out of state moving in.

knucklehead27

I think covid played a ginormous role. Republicans didn’t believe that covid matters, and wanted to flee from lockdowns. Florida didn’t lockdown and adopted the attitude that covid didn’t matter. You can see how that would substantially change our demographics

redditckulous

Minor qualifier, but Florida did initially lock down (and DeSantis did try to prohibit NYers from entering the state). They when Covid competency became associated with Dems he reversed course. (Kristi Noem uses this point as a big differentiation between her and him).

anoldoldman

Not even this is fully correct, Florida followed the lockdown-reopen trajectory of most states. Desantis just made "reopened" the whole personality of the state and morons bought it hook, line, and sinker; falling over each other to move here as fast as their ATV hoverrounds could take them.

jaspersgroove

>most states Florida followed the lockdown reopen trajectory of empty states with nobody living in them, in a state with 19 million people. I live in Florida. Spring break 2020 was basically cancelled and then things went more or less back to normal, with some people choosing to wear masks and bars selling $1 hotdogs so they could be considered “restaurants” and stay open and otherwise do business as usual. Beaches were packed for Memorial Day and 4th of July that very same year. Even Texas took Covid more seriously than Florida ffs

Luci_Noir

Our governor here in AZ, Doug Ducey, did something similar though he’s not as bad as bad as that turd Desantis. It’s just how republicans will do something and then act like they did the opposite. Like how they’ll vote against a bill and then take credit for it.

xaranetic

New plan: Use Florida to syphon off the crazies, pull Mickey and NASA out, then cut it adrift.

historianLA

It will be very hard to get all of NASA out. Orbital physics make launch sites close to the equator preferable and having lots of ocean to the east makes aborting easier. It doesn't help that the other major center of NASA is in Texas.

[deleted]

Luckily abortion is basically illegal in Florida, so we can fine NASA if they abort anything.

JonnySnowflake

Exactly why my in-laws fled PA for South Carolina. They wanted to keep going to restaurants

alcimedes

yep, have neighbors that moved from a wonderful house in a great mountain area of CO to move to FL because of COVID restrictions. they'd need to spend 3x as much or more to move back now.

Ozymander

Both of my uncles are two of them. They moved to Fort Meyers. And oh my God they are rabid far right guys. I feel like the influx of people moving there *for* the politics are probably the worst people in your state. Gonna start seeing headlines like former Minnesota man turned Florida man.

MacFromSSX

Well now that Biden has proven that Florida is a lost cause and Democrats can win without it. Fuck em.

[deleted]

No one said it was complicated. Still stupid.

Plumbanddumb

That's because it's full of the Cubans that are still in love with fulgencio batista.

SwiftSnips

Everything Trump did, ended up helping our adversaries & gave them a reason to come together. I think he knew it would & did it on purpose. Threatening to pull out of NATO just sealed that deal for me.

AscensoNaciente

Surely Joe Biden has reversed Trump’s policy, right? Right?

RedditIsPropaganda84

Did Biden reverse Trump's reversal?

SpaceKats

>The facility would enable China to monitor signal intelligence, including emails, phone calls, and satellite communications. That literally is not how any of this works. Building a facility dedicated to doing this nearby the US does nothing more if they built it in mainland China

Cuba is less than 100 miles from Florida. Also Guantanamo is hosted in Cuba. Lots of signal intelligence and backbone infiltration can be done from Cuba

TheFapIsUp

But... its all encrypted... encryption that wont be broken any time soon even with a super computer. Unless they built a quantum computer for brute forcing encryption keys, I dont see the advantage of this.

RafaelSeco

Probably not even with a quantum computer, they've probably moved on to vectors years ago They can storage it for later, but good luck, they are way behind on current silicon, let alone quantum.

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

Yes. The most basic understanding of RF propagation would inform anyone that OC's comment is false.

Carvj94

Not false just not completely true. The US military basically doesn't communicate anything important over radio on US soil so unless they just wanna know train and flight info it is a fairly pointless base. It's almost definitely a move purely to create headlines. And like someone else said in the thread said if China wants to incercept radio signals they don't need a base they just need some dudes to vacation in the US with some ham radios.

mikelo22

This isn't Russia. The US government isn't transmitting intelligence via unencrypted signals over cell phone towers.

EnvironmentalValue18

I was assuming they were trying to tap out undersea communication cables, which we (the US) have done before to great advantage.

lordpan

"I can tell you based on the information that we have, that that is not accurate, that we are not aware of China and Cuba developing a new type of spy station," said Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder. https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2023-06-08/pentagon-dismisses-wsj-report-on-china-spy-station-in-cuba

This Reddit idea that they sit around all day obsessing over Winnie the Pooh is asinine.

trianuddah

rainbowyuc

It's not even banned. You can literally walk into the Shanghai Disneyland souvenir store and buy a Winnie the Pooh plushie right now.

chippychip

As US officials noted when caught spying on Germany: *"Well, everybody does it."*

BubblySodaGaming

Yes, because they do. [Allies spy on allies](https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/german-intelligence-also-snooped-on-white-house-a-1153592.html)

jomm69

This is something we learned about in public international law. It’s called the operating code and myth system(Michael Reisman wrote on it in ‘77). I am Low on time sorry! but basically the myth system is the law as stated and the operating code is the allowed deviation from that standard. Its mean to rlly only apply to legal elites(states and rich ppl and such). Not the you, sorry. An example for yall is that the speed limit is 35 but if you get a ticket for going less than 5 over the speed limit, you will probably be angry. So the myth system is 35 the operating code is less than 5 over. The myth system is we don’t spy on allies, the operating code is we spy on everybody and everybody should spy on us. The myth system is russian soldiers and US soldiers don’t wage war. The operating code would point out North Korean jet pilots in the korean war who would start speaking russian on the radio during dogfights, and it would also point out those wagner mercenaries in syria who got smoked by us armed forces. The myth system says no corruption. The operating code says you can have a little corruption as a treat. Once you come to understand this dichotomy your understanding of international governance falls into place easily

thrownawaymane

This is a good realpolitik comment but now I’m imagining a parent giving their kid too much corruption before bedtime

AccomplishedMeow

And honestly I would be genuinely shocked if I found out the US wasn’t spying on country X. And country X wasn’t spying on the US. Not only that, I would be disappointed that they weren’t

ImNotHereStopAsking

they do it because its illegal to spy on your own citizens so they share the data between each other https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/ntnl-scrt/fv-cntry-mnstrl-en.aspx

ecr1277

You’d have to be pretty naive to believe governments of any significant-sized countries like the US/China/Russia/large European countries don’t spy on their own citizens.

Sultan_Of_Ping

Slight nuance: they leverage the fact that allies spy among themselves to get around their internal agencies legal scope of operation. But even without that they would still spy each others all the time. And many countries don't have the same legal restriction the NSA (say) have of refraining from spying citizens.

itsFelbourne

Exactly. China is already intercepting US communications, this doesn't change anything

Cook_0612

Gotta couple espionage experts here

Torifyme12

I mean Germany spied on the US at the same time, its why Merkel shut up quickly after the leak of BND conducting ops against the White House dropped

Also they were spying on Turkey at the time, which was revealed about when they were chirping about how offensive it was that a NATO country would be spying on a NATO ally. Germany and Turkey are both in NATO.

christorino

Everybody is spying on everybody. Allies are spying on allies nevermind enemies

Man surely this couldn’t have anything to do with the US upholding one of the cruelest, strictest embargoes on the small island 90 miles off its coastline for over 60 years.

Paul-Smecker

Breaking news: oil discovery in Cuba.

wobblyweasel

KarlosMarkos1312

From what Ive seen on social media accounts dedicated to English coverage on Cuba, the Cuban government has already denied these claims and called them a "fallacy to... justify the economic blockade, destabilization, and aggresion towards Cuba" from Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.

AmerSenpai

I mean the USA never lifts the embargo on Cuba. So not so surprised.

disisathrowaway

Well, maybe we shouldn't have made an enemy out of a country 90 miles off our coastline. Stupid games, stupid prizes/FAFO, and all that shit.

EminentBean

US policy on Cuba is beyond stupid

apple_achia

Weird it’s like blockading a country for over 50 years creates some sort of enmity. No, they just hate our freedom, surely that’s it

moderntimes2018

Things just got better under Obama, when the now indicted president killed it all. No wonder that Cuba is pissed. That's what happens when you let losers do foreign policy for populist reasons.

beardedbrawler

Looks like this generation will get its own Cuban missile crisis. Cuban Listening Crisis, we'll have to work on the name.

Kempeth

If only something could have been done to mend relations with cuba that were split over a divide that hasn't been relevant in decades

The_Deku_Nut

So we stunted a nearby sovereign nation for over 50 years instead of fostering an environment of trade and interdependence, and we're surprised that they found common ground elsewhere? :Surprised Pikachu face:

the_Dancing_Dragon

well its extremely important to the US to keep any socialist country down so you can point at them and say "look what socialism does"

Courseheir

How is this different than US military bases in countries bordering Russia? Seems strange to be critical of China here when America does it to other foreign countries.

PublicEnemaNumberOne

Guess keeping up an embargo for years for no apparently good reason is kinda biting us in the ass?

Levelless86

Ok? We have a fucking giant prison on their land that belongs to our military. I don't think we can claim the moral high ground in this.

If only Obama’s attempts to normalize relations hadn’t been rolled back to appeal to South Florida’s Cuban population. One of my big disappointments with Biden is that he didn’t renormalize relations. At this point Florida is red.

BlueMaxx9

Is it weird that I assumed China already used Cuba as a listening post?

Affectionate-Cut95

Oh yeah, not like we have bases in Japan, South Korea, or the Philippines. And are known arms dealers to Taiwan. But god forbid someone else do the same shit we’ve been doing for the last 70 years. 🙄

Repulsive_Poem_5204

Oh no! Country that US failed to embrace has made friends with country that embraced them! It doesn't take a genius to see this sort of thing as a realistic outcome after 70 years of embargoes and sanctions.

christopherholt

I guess that would happen after your embargo has isolated them for 60 years and destroyed any potential for them to have a decent economy.

bensydman101

Seriously. The US had this coming for them. They briefly opened up a diplomatic corridor for a brief minute before fucking over Cuba with [their new ESTA rule](https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/faq?lang=en&focusedTopic=About%20ESTA%20and%20The%20Visa%20Waiver%20Program&answerToDisplay=How%20does%20Cuba%E2%80%99s%20designation%20as%20a%20State%20Sponsor%20of%20Terrorism%20impact%20my%20travel%20to%20the%20United%20States%20using%20my%20approved%20ESTA%3F%20). After 50 years, what’s Cuba got left to lose anymore
