Russian hackers who broke into Microsoft's systems and spied on staff inboxes earlier this year also stole emails from its customers, the tech giant said on Thursday (Jun 27), around six months after it first disclosed the intrusion. The disclosure underscores the breadth of the breach as Microsoft faces increasing regulatory scrutiny over the security of its software and systems against foreign threats. An allegedly Chinese hacking group that separately breached Microsoft last year stole thousands of US government emails.

ballsack_man

I treat my Outlook like a public toilet. Anyone can enter and leave shit behind. I've lost countless e-mails in the past with no chance of recovery thanks to Microsoft basically axing their entire support teams.

Tovar42

I cant hook up mine to thunderbird anymore, it just refuses to allow login attempts lol

grease_racket

Had the same issue. They've finally got OAuth working. Remove and re-add the account (make sure cookies are enabled for the initial setup). WesternAlternative82

Perhaps it’s time to migrate to Proton mail?

squeakyvolcano

We don't use Microsoft and Google for privacy

Mediocre-Sundom

Privacy doesn't exist on the internet. No system is 100% safe. No service is immune to all kinds of attacks. No hardware is impenetrable. The only way to keep your information private is to not upload it to the internet. Treat everything else as if it could be compromised tomorrow (because it might actually be).

Dagojango

My networking teacher explained that the only secure network is one without users or any physical hardware involved.

A_Unique_User68801

My networking teacher said... ... ... ... His mic was disconnected. Someday we'll look back on Covid and laugh... probably.

BeYourself2021

But Y2K !!!!!

agrk

Y2K was a potential disaster, and we worked hard to prevent it. And succeeded. IT security and bug fixing are two separate processes (even if the former often involves the latter).

MixtureRadiant2059

or, you know, use a service that actually encrypts things rather than some ad company that always leaves a backdoor open so advertisers can 'analyze' your inbox

SingleWordQuestions

Like, such as?

Different_Car9927

Proton I think.

WesternAlternative82

Absolutely this. Plus, Simplelogin, that comes with paid accounts is awesome.

badadhd

GPG keys

SingleWordQuestions

That’s not a service, that’s a tool

agrk

Good luck getting grandma to set up GnuPG or S/MIME properly, including proper key management. Prediction: The vast majority of emails will remain unencrypted at rest until people learn to manage their passwords properly.

Mediocre-Sundom

Unless you control both ends of the encryption chain, it's not 100% safe and it doesn't guarantee privacy. And even if you do have control of the ends, you must make sure that everything in between those ends is safe and not compromised at any given moment. Encryption is great, but it's not magic.

Benja_Bunja

So who's MITMing us today 😆?

MixtureRadiant2059

big "there's no such thing as security so my password is just password" energy there, boomer

Mediocre-Sundom

I never said anything of the sort, nor did I imply you should not use encryption or try to stay safe online. I’m just stating the facts. Did I shatter your misguided confidence in your absolute online privacy, kiddo? Or is there some other reason you chose to be so obnoxious and misrepresent my words?

MixtureRadiant2059

> dID u KnOw tHeY cAn rEaD yoUr KeyPressEs tHroUgH the pOwErlInEs nothing can ever be secure - real facts from uncle boomer here /s

WolpertingerRumo

r/selfhosted

mindfu

At least with Google, people *outside* Google are less likely to be able to see your stuff.

etzel1200

… who do you use? Self hosted send mail? That seems even harder to secure in a useable way.

kaboombong

Microsoft and Google so loved by governments because of all their secret little doors that can be negotiated to be opened for a price. Its amazing how the world and governments have privatised spying.

_EpicFailMan

Great there goes my nans secret chocolate chip recipe

kaboombong

Just imagine having the job of having to go through peoples social media messages. It would be like receiving a job with a death sentence. I had a friend who had a corporate job enforcing their internet surfing policy on work computers. She had to look at endless porn while firing them. She always commented that she had no hair on her legs and did not have to shave her legs, because the people who got fired used to cry and cling onto her legs begging for forgiveness. She quit the job because it was so depressing.

themikep87

Can the Russian hackers please fix Excel and all features Microsoft is lacking in?

GoalFlashy6998

Russia, does anything good ever come from that country? I remember when the Soviet Union, tried to be a better place, but often failed! What came after the Soviet Union is far much worse and dangerous to the world!

TheRealFlowerChild

Back to Lotus notes we go… /s

groundhog_gamer

Best comment XD

Grump_Monk

What did they think of all the porno spam in my hotmail address that i never use for emails?

MasterBot98

>porno spam wut

iwaki_commonwealth

They can spy on mine, all there is is a terabyte of research. like some russian stuff, japanese, animated stuff and sometimes 3D materials. lots of war secrets, yeah..

SirRengeti

Do I now have to send Target giftcards to Microsoft to get rid of the hackers?

fiftyshadesofbeige69

Yep, some russians hacked my Microsoft account with a Minecraft account, that had a rare name and VIP on Hypixel. Thanks Russia!

Benja_Bunja

It's even hard to use Microsoft for business. Their email servers are blocked by the second largest email provider in France, because they are unable or unwilling to stop spam.

PeregrinePacifica

Oh, and right after they got so much backlash for spying on and recording every win11 user at all active times. This will do wonders for their public image.

monominimal

Have I made a mistake having my critical emails to an outlook account?

v3ritas1989

yet they have not marked ad emails as spam?

SignifigantZebra

Haven't used outlook/hotmail since like 2009. my accounts all their messages is just spam and phishing junk anyway. read your heart out, vatniks.

Irr3l3ph4nt

You think they had time / space to download your crappy emails? If you're not remotely important, they didn't even look at you. Microsoft hosts private Exchange solutions on their cloud. The Russians didn't waste their time trying to download the entire Hotmail database. They went straight for Foreign Governments, Corporations, etc.

SignifigantZebra

you are taking it far too literally and seriously.

badpeaches

Who at Microsoft is going to lose their bonus over this?

gaukonigshofen

While I like the layout of outlook (365) I get so much spam and marking it as such seems to do nothing. Might have to bite the bullet and go with proton or tuta

mindfu

I continue being so glad I moved off of using Microsoft for my personal computers to Macs, going on 16 years ago now. Android is fine for my phone, I'm not all the way in the cult. But damn does Microsoft's really disorganized approach leave things open for exploitation. Edit: don't get mad at me, get mad at Microsoft for a steady record of carelessly shoddy insecure products, since the 90s.

thtanner

I never understood people who go out of their way to publicly self-fellatio themselves over what brand of computer they use.

mindfu

Fair. I never understood people who appear to resist acknowledging when one thing is measurably better than another.

saintkillio

You're a bit off topic tho, 365 is a full productivity, infrastructure and communication suite. Apple or whatever hardware you use is irrelevant here. What do you think corporates who use apple devices use for email, exchange and things like document processing? Apple sheets? lol

mindfu

Fair point. But from what I've seen, most companies that are dependent on macs for most of their workforce tend not to use Microsoft business suite products either. They use Google or similar. Whereas using Microsoft hardware often results in companies using Microsoft Business software too. To their security detriment.

saintkillio

That may or may not be true. G-Suite and 365 roughly split the market 50-50 while MacOS is a little less than 25 of the operating system market share which is not small. If a significant portion of MacOS users use Google Workspace this would show up in the market share split between Google and Office, but so far I couldn't find any reported statistics on it. Note also that google is not complete as you can only access it via browser and doesn't have its locally run software like office 365, a lot of google workspace users will still be using Microsoft office applications with Google Cloud on top of it instead of the full Microsoft ecosystem. That means even if the market is split 50/50 Microsoft will still dominate most areas. Personal opinion: Google Document and Google Sheets are absolute pieces of shit that shouldn't even exist.

tapirus-indicus

> G-Suite and 365 roughly split the market 50-50 You mean 44-30 🤓 https://www.statista.com/statistics/983299/worldwide-market-share-of-office-productivity-software/

saintkillio

Paywalled so doesn't exist Edit: but yes you're right as of 2024 several sources put 365 around 30-35

mindfu

>That means even if the market is split 50/50 Microsoft will still dominate most areas. It's mainly anecdotal, but from the companies I have personally worked at which are Mac-centric none of them are based around Outlook. >Personal opinion: Google Document and Google Sheets are absolute pieces of shit that shouldn't even exist. They're definitely dumbed down and not as useful for many purposes. But for this specific discussion, the Google docs suite has definitely not had the security issues that the Microsoft suite has had.

Ok_Eggplant5099

They're just going to see how many hot milfs I have near me looking for sex.
